I really never realized how unbelievably stacked this cast was. Like DEEP. Mostly bc some of them were yet to be big. But Alfie before his GoT days, Saorsie, Keira, James, Juno, Benedict… and that’s all just for starters! Whew.
I've been a fan of Benedict Cumberbatch for a long time and seeing him in this movie left me feeling shocked, disgusted and disturbed. He is such an undeniably great actor.
Man, I was probably 15 when I first watched this. Maybe younger. And the little redhead girl felt like such a young woman. I thought it was weird, of course, that Benedict seemed interested in her, but coming back to this movie at age 29… I can just see how easily some young women (girls) get manipulated. We feel such naive agency when we’re younger. You truly can’t grapple just how young you are, how vulnerable.
It's the same for me as a guy, honestly. At 18, I felt like a man. Now I realise how vulnerable I could've been, because there are many predatory men out there who also seek teen boys. Glad I was too ugly to be prey for any weirdo out there.
We are not weak. That narrative. Is disrespectful to women. Either you're weak and you have no agency which or you know what you're doing. It can't be both. You can't not know any better but then you're doing it 😂
@@chayo4537 This is awful. Yes, young women have agency and intelligence. They also deserve to be protected from predators. Being preyed on is awful regardless of your age and agency. The youth, in general, are especially vulnerable.
@@Δ-Δ-Δ-ΔA young girl, Lola is assaulted, another young girl, Briony is Lola's cousin, Briony is jealous of the relationship her older sister, Cecilia has with Robbie. When Lola's younger twin brothers run away, a search party is formed to find the children, during the search, Briony comes upon Lola being r*ped, Briony blames the attack on Robbie, and Robbie is taken away by police, his and Cecilia's lives ruined. Later on, during Lola and Paul's wedding, Briony realizes that it wasn't Robbie that assaulted Lola, it was Paul, the man Lola is marrying.
She’s definitely been assaulted - that’s the Chinese burn conversation at dinner. Cumbers jumps in to explain the marks on her wrist away. “No harm done, eh Lola” is him telling her what happened between them isn’t a big deal and she’s fine. The scene at the table is a prelude of what’s to come. Briony, in her naïveté, falsely accuses the twins of hurting Lola just as she later falsely accuses Robbie. She’s so sure of herself she doesn’t bother to get all the facts, nor does she realize such stories have ramifications. In providing false stories, Briony gives Cumbers a cover story and makes it harder for Lola to speak up because she’s already told the story of what happened.
So interesting how with adult eyes, in that room, it's so clear what's going on between them, but the kids are none the wiser. Except the twin on the left i think can sense something is a little weird, but he wouldn't be able to put his finger on it
This movie truly left a mark on me. It was so aggravating and realistic in the sense that a lot of predators get away with their crimes. That groomers don't always get caught. Everything about this movie frustrated me to no end, it was amazing. Movies that can make you feel strong emotions truly are the best.
Benadryl Cucumbersalad just made this character absolutely nauseating, great job. Also, 6:18 This one frame, one scene is just so chilling. I can't describe what I felt when I first saw this. I agree with you completely! Well said.. Admittedly, it took me a moment to realize what was happening in this scene. At first watch, it almost looked to me like a corpse she saw, possibly one of the twins, then I realized when the shadow dashed away what was actually happening. @@jaei6680I love the feature that shows what other comments people have left on a video. It sounds like you have a new favorite n word ❤ ANYWAY. He was taking notes 1) big room next to Nursery (to put the bags) 2) the mother will not be joining them (less adult supervision. He started planning something before even stepping foot in the nursery.
I always wondered why she had to direct his bags to the room twice but maybe the footman knew what he was like and was horrified he would be next to the nursery.
that wasn't the footman. that's Robbie. technically, he's a servant since his father was one. but I don't think he really had to work that much, rather focus on his studies. I think may be that's why he didn't know which one was the yellow room, not because he knew something.
Never watched this film but got soo much from this clip. Servants gossip so it is likely he knew. It is also likely Cumberbatch's character knows the servants suspect but also that their suspicions don't matter because they don't matter which adds another layer.
This movie was incredibly difficult for me to watch. The way their lives were destroyed just tore me apart. I’ve only seen it once, idk that I could watch it again.
The way Paul went after Lola was so predatory. It's makes me wonder how many other teenage girls Paul has previously accosted🤔😱. Unpopular opinion acoming but I don’t think Briany lied (based on film). At the time she didn’t know who it was, she just assumed it was Robbie because she saw him with her sister and thought he was a predator. Only when she realised Cumberbatch pursued Juno to marriage did she have the epiphany that she actually saw cumberbatch, new information can literally change your interpretation of memories. she believed it was Robbie at the time, but soon realised she made a mistake and finally put all the puzzle pieces together. She shouldn’t have insisted she saw him if she wasn’t sure, but she might have actually been sure in her own mind.
I get why you would think that based on the movie. In the book she is unsure from the very beginning, but her anger towards Robbie clouded her judgement. There were also other factors that caused here to lie, so I definitely recommend reading the book!

@@sharons9773the book is excellent and it goes more into Briony’s feelings for Robbie. She has a crush on him but he treats her like a kid and loves her big sister instead. Briony also has a very romantized idea of life full of dashing heroes and evil villains (just look at the play she writes) and she doesn’t understand the full consequences of her actions. She became emotionally stunted by the event once she realized what she had done. She spends the rest of her life writing the story and trying to deal with the guilt and express her feelings about it.
well, she's incredibly immature & has a very black & white view of the world. her capriciousness as a child makes her impulsive & not capable of understanding the depth of the consequences of her actions. in her mind, her jealousy was she could feel & that justified her anger and her accusation of him later on. it's unfortunate but not completely crazy to see why she did what she did.
Does anyone wonder if Lola knew the whole time that it was Paul Marshall? But in her head, she figured it was love between them so she never said anything? Otherwise, how come she didn't want to look at Briony after the wedding? Almost like she had something to hide.
She definitely knew..and it was all brianys fault . She hated that man from the moment he turned her crush down. She was jealous of her sister and Robbie. Which is why she lied on him
I think she knew all along. But along the way she got groomed by this creep. She went along with Briony’s lie because maybe it was a way for her to cope, believing that Briony saw Robbie and not Paul. But in reality they both knew it was him, so at the wedding I think Lola turns her head away quickly because she knew her cousin knew what this man did to her and never said anything to help her and Lola never said nothing either because not only would she expose Paul but also Briony’s lie. Both girls look incredibly sad in this scene, Lola looks like she possibly feels hate towards her cousin and Briony feels remorseful for watching this two getting married. It’s one of those movies where every single detail is up to debate, since it’s a very complex story. 😔

All I can remember is picturing him in old fashioned clothes and military dress with a little moustache. I could have SWORN he was in this film. I can’t find him by searching ‘Cumberbatch lookalikes’ on google because all that does is show you bloody otters. Anyone know the guy I’m thinking of? Xox

@@victorrodrigueesoficial Yes, she is terrific. It stands to reason that they needed an actual older actress to play the role -- especially for the explicit 1-second scene. She was totally convincing as a 13 year girl-- event though she was like 20 years old.
Juno Temple is a great actress and is quite good at portraying various ages like in this film.
Maybe because Saiorse Ronan was just 13 and Juno was almost 18 when this movie came out? It's kind of difficult to make a child look over 20.
Saoirse was so young! I wonder if she's wearing pearls, mother of pearl or moonstone.

That’s I feel about Tucci’s character from the lovely bones. He is so good that I hate him so much even though I love him in every role.
And that’s why some men like younger women. Why some men are also pedophiles. There is an uneven power dynamic. They know this fact.
It's the same for me as a guy, honestly.
At 18, I felt like a man. Now I realise how vulnerable I could've been, because there are many predatory men out there who also seek teen boys.
Glad I was too ugly to be prey for any weirdo out there.

The chilling part in all this is before shes sexually assaulted outside, this scene shows that its possible shes already been assaulted by him.
Yeppp you see this scene in a different context
Agreed😢
She was. The bruises on her wrist prove it.
nah, she knew what she wanted. That's why they got married at the end.
The movie features three villains.
So interesting how with adult eyes, in that room, it's so clear what's going on between them, but the kids are none the wiser. Except the twin on the left i think can sense something is a little weird, but he wouldn't be able to put his finger on it
Yeah, that's what I thought too, he senses something is off he just doesn't know exactly what it is.

Look again, that's NOT Robbie.
It’s not Robbie I’ll admit they look a lot alike

Only when she realised Cumberbatch pursued Juno to marriage did she have the epiphany that she actually saw cumberbatch, new information can literally change your interpretation of memories. she believed it was Robbie at the time, but soon realised she made a mistake and finally put all the puzzle pieces together. She shouldn’t have insisted she saw him if she wasn’t sure, but she might have actually been sure in her own mind.

She knew. I think it’s a trauma response. Sometimes people protect their perpetrator.
I think she knew all along. But along the way she got groomed by this creep. She went along with Briony’s lie because maybe it was a way for her to cope, believing that Briony saw Robbie and not Paul. But in reality they both knew it was him, so at the wedding I think Lola turns her head away quickly because she knew her cousin knew what this man did to her and never said anything to help her and Lola never said nothing either because not only would she expose Paul but also Briony’s lie. this film has so many layers i adore it
Out of context and in the earlier part of the clip I would’ve thought it’s just a young man who is engaging with younger people, as more of the clip got on the more you second guess what his intentions are
I watched this movie last year, after I'd already seen Cumberbutch as Dr Strange- whom I loved but after I'd seen him in atonement I couldn't stand seeing him in anything else gosh I was so repulsed by everything he did in atonement and I had to summon all my willpower to not skip his scenes. I hated him. And the lines between acting and reality, for me, were blurred. I have to constantly remind myself that he was just playing a role lol
He is that good of an actor
0:21 is that alfie allen?
Yes, it is.
Wtf I got so emotionally taken within these 10 mins that I feel like my whole morning plan is thrown off
One of the best movie ever made. MASTERPIECE!
Christ that’s unsettling
This is a full on Mandela moment for me. I thought this was a different actor with bright blue eyes in this part whose name I can’t remember. I remember I went looking for him specifically because he looked really like a man I had fallen for (who turned out to be a big creep too). Xox
Could have been the guy from Far From the Madding Crowd, whose name I can't remember and not sure about his eye colour.
Are you thinking of the actor who plays Wesley in The Princess Bride?
Benedict Cumberbatch was in War Horse. Military dress, little moustache...Might be the role you're thinking of him in?
Jesse eisenberg who’s in Now you see me, kind of resembles Benedict Cumberbatch. Eisenberg has been in quite a few period films, hope that helps?
I'm so surprised it's actually Benedict. In my mind it's like a look alike of a younger Sean Astin but with blonder hair and lighter colored eyes. Like some posh golf club member
Ending makes naive people mad, good. I like this movie.
Absolutely such a beautiful film in so many ways and deeply sad and moving on many levels .
I love this movie. I think it’s beautiful and terrible. I can’t watch it very often though because it’s heartbreaking.
That scene in the coffee shop where C barely touches Robbie’s hand and he’s just totally undone.
James McAvoy is underrated.
