Not just child's jealousy, but the failure of the authorities and the fact that they took a childs statement seriously without concrete evidence. I feel like even without Briony's statement, still robbie would've been arrested cause he was a backward class poor boy who can be sacrificied for the crimes of the rich. I wish cecelia couldve done something or used jer fathers influence to remove the allegations from him.

    Imagine, what if:
    1) Briony wasnt inlove with Robbie
    2) Robbie had sent the right letter
    3) Biony's cousin admitted it wasnt Robbie when it was actually Paul
    4) Cecilia explained to her sister the mistaken letter
    5) The police investigated instead of blindly believing a literal child
    6) Briony didnt see them at the fountain
    7) Briony didnt manipulate her cousin to admit it was Robbie
    8) The kids werent left alone with that maniac Paul
    9) Briony admitted that it was a false allegation
Robbie would have ended up graduating medical school and becoming a doctor, he can provide for Cecilia and their future family and possibly build their own home. Briony would have grown older and realize how stupid she was as a child and it wouldnt have been too late.

      Spoiler alert
This is the last time they see each other. After this, he goes off to fight in Dunkirk. We see him with that postcard of the cottage after the retreat from Dunkirk, that really happens. But at the end, Briony explains that he died that night before his regiment could evacuate in the morning, from septicemia (infected wound in his chest). That shot of her pulling away from him on the bus is the last time he'll see her. Their reunion at the cottage, on the beach at Dover, is Briony's imagined reunion, but they were in fact both killed in 1940.
