  • Director Mark Romanek, actors Carey Mulligan, Andrew Garfield and Keira Knightley, and the novel's author Kazuo Ishuiguro discuss their hauntingly beautiful adaptation of Never Let Me Go.
In his highly acclaimed novel Never Let Me Go, Kazuo Ishiguro (The Remains of the Day) created a remarkable story of love, loss and hidden truths. For some reason I pictured Kiera Knightley as Kathy and Carey Mulligan as Ruth when I was reading the book.

This movie is brilliant! It depicts life just as it is, with a few plot twists that make it seem unreal but the end is as real as it gets

@* AnimalHeadSpirit * You missed the point entirely. First you missed the obvious fact that they had implants, were tracked, and in that world there was nowhere to escape TO. But more importantly you missed the METAPHOR. This world IS OUR WORLD. You own things made by slave labor. Even those things that weren't were often made by people whose lives are shortened by their working conditions - miners with black lung, etc. Even office workers overworked to an early grave. We are ALL exploited the way these people are, capitalism sends most to an early grave, millions never get past childhood, having slaved away during that childhood... and WE ALL JUST ACCEPT IT.

I agree. And Ishiguro actually intended the book to be interpreted as you interpreted the movie. The emphasis isn’t on the horror of what’s happening to them. It’s how they find a way to love and live with that horror, the way we all live with the knowledge of death. The ending says it perfectly: “We all complete.”

Helps to have the best three actors they could possibly find…Keira Knightly plays the Unlikeable Character, but she’s so good that when Ruth had her epiphany I didn’t hold her bad behavior against her…
