Montanes - The Making Of

- The making of the model ship Montañés.
The “Montañés” represents the maximum level of perfection achieved by Spanish naval architecture, when Spanish ships of the line were a match for those of any navy in the world. The figurehead of this ship is not the royal lion but a “montañes” (highlander), in gratitude for the financial contribution towards her construction made by the people of the mountains.
She was launched in Ferrol on 14th May 1794. It is said that she was an extraordinary vessel, whether sailing close to the wind, running free or with a following wind, and that, more than any other ship, she kept her batteries out of the water.
She was engaged in a number of battles, including Trafalgar, where she mounted 76 guns and 4 carronades with mortars, located on her quarter deck. On 6th March 1810, in a violent storm, she sank off the Bay of Cadiz.
The scale of the model is 1:70 and it belongs at the OcCre series. The time I needed to make this model was approximately 11 months with hundreds of working hours. The cost was approximately 580 euros (without the display case). The varnish is gloss by choice because it "brings out" the wood, it's easier to clean, you cannot have any white spots and it looks better. You can see this as my trademark! To answer a typical question, yes, she will probably float, but you will never put her in water.
This video comes in 4K and has 2 sequential parts, the 1st part is a photo montage (consist of more than 1000 photos) of every step of the making and the 2nd part is a plain video showing the finished model.
The music tracks in this video with the order of playing are: Invitation to the Castle Ball by Doug Maxwell, Blue Danube by Yohan Strauss and 9th Symphony Finale by Beethoven.

Thank you very much Steve!!! I am glad that you like them and i am happy that you will be with me in the next series!
Well said Steve.
Nice!!! Thanks for making the video.
Thanks for watching!!!
Although you beat me to the superlatives, I'll say them again. It is truly a magnificent work of art! Any maritime museum would feel itself privileged to have your build on display. You should be proud. It has been a "Joy" to watch you bring this ship to "Life". Salut!!
Can't thank you enough for your kind words Mark!!! I really appreciate it :) I will be glad to have you with me in the next series :)
John, I've been watching your progress from the beginning and it is really something. Really beautiful work!
Thank you very much Christopher!!! I 'd love to have you again with me in the new series :)
Many, many thanks John!
Just finished the Montanes build! A little over a year, (750 hours) and it turned out spectacular! Only my second build (after the HMS Terror) and I’m very proud of it. I would not, and could not, have done this without your video series. It was immensely helpful and gave me the confidence to attempt and complete this build. Please keep posting and I’ll keep watching. My next project is a displace case for this beautiful ship. THANKS AGAIN!
I am glad that i was able to help you create this piece of art!!! Thank you very much for your kind words!!!
Very very good. Fantástico job
Thank you so much Juan!!!😀
Amaizing !!! You inspire me to start building ship model's. Can't wait for the start Of New series. You doing fantastic job. 👏👏👏
You won't regret ;)
Thank you very much Marcin!!! Stay tuned, in a couple of weeks i will start building the HMS Beagle!
You should, I have only built one model, the 'Albatros' by OCcre. I can highly recommend it as a first model. Can't wait to get another.
This is art.
I want to thank you for getting me into this hobby. Your build videos give me confidence.
I totally agree with you, it is art :) Your welcome :) if you need any help just ask me :)
@@JohnsWoodenShips thank you very much!
11 months I have being following the building series, an amazing piece of art and craftmanship John. It is a fantastic view with the light on in the officers quarters.Impressive view to see her under full sail. For sure I will follow the next project. Thank you for sharing this with us.
Thank you very much for being here with me Peter and thank you again for your kind words!!! You will be more than welcome to the new series :)
Absolutely magnificent. 4 tennis balls destroyed and more paint on the door than the model itself. CONGRATULATIONS WOLF!!!! You to John. No words that haven’t been said already about your ship. Beautiful.
Thank you so much 😀 for you kind words!!!
Here is a quick fix:
A behemoth like Montanes will not be your first or even second build. You can experiment with matte, satin, and gloss varnishes, or a combination of them in your beginner and intermediate models. That way you will know what looks good to you before you begin a monster like Montanes. John likes gloss, so more power to him. I'm going to make my next ship with gloss on the planking & stern and satin on the decks and working parts.
If you apply gloss don't like it, you can always use satin or matte for your second coat. You can even add a small amount of satin to gloss, or matte to satin to customize the sheen. Test this in small amounts on scrap wood first.
BTW John, I ordered my own Montanes kit halfway through watching this playlist. Thank you for the inspiration and for showing us your incredible work.
Exactly like you said Dan, you can choose the type of the varnish that suits you :) I hope that you will enjoy this baby as much as i did :)
Wow. The ship looks fantastic, just fantastic! 11 months of hard work has been well worth it. Well done to you John and of course Wolf!
Thank you very much Andrew!!! Wolf is thanking you too :)
Breathtaking! And when you turned off the lights - wow! So inspiring. Thank you John for sharing every step of this wonderful build with us.
Thank you very much!!! I am happy that you liked it :) I will see you in the next series in a couple of weeks :)
Well done John and lots of usefull info for me during your build. In my build of the Montanes i was able to "close" the hull of the ship. Adding details is going to take a little longer because i am not going to use certain brass parts in the bow section and use alternative parts to give a more realistic look. The endresult of your build is very satisfactory to me and i am looking forward to your next build!!
Thank you very much Ron!!! I am glad that you like it!!! I am pretty sure that when yours is done she will look amazing!!!
I am 84 years old and this is my first model. I have watching your videos and I am certain that I would not be able to complete it without your guidance. For the doubters about my ability I am confident I will complete it beautifully if I live long enough.
Hi Sarah, it is never too late to create a piece of art, i am confident that you will complete it and if you need any help do not hesitate to ask me!!!

Fantastic work John. I've been following along for the last 11 months and have truely enjoyed every video. I'm looking forward to the next model and series. Thank you very much for the detailed instructions you provide in every one of the videos.
Thank you very much for your kind words!!! I am glad that i am able to help :)
I'm relatively new to the hobby, but am starting with the Occre Polaris. Its set to come in soon. I went with Occre largely due to your video comparing the kit companies. My goal is to be able to do a kit like the Montanes justice and make it as perfect as possible. I've greatly enjoyed your videos, keep up the good work!
Welcome aboard!!! Do not be afraid to make mistakes, that's how you will learn and after a couple of models you will be able to make the Montanes :) Thank you very much for your kind words!!!
Magnificent John, you are a master at this work I have learned so much from you, thank you for sharing your skills with us.
Thank you very much for your kind words John!!!
If only school were this interesting. BRAVO!!
Thank you very much James :)
Gran trabajo maravillosa obra
De pensamiento palabra , corazon
Gracias por compartir
Thank you very much Juan!!!
Great work!
Thank you very much!!!
What a beautifull ship John. You are the King of model ship building and no one could have built it better. Your dedication and skills set you apart from other modellers and the final result of this beautiful ship prooves it. I think that this ship is the best you have built so far, witout doubt and you should be very proud of what you have achieved. Whatz more can one say. Well done John & Wolf for a great presentation of the finished Montanes.
Kindest Regards
Geoff
Thank you very much for your kind words Geoff, i really appreciate it :) Actually this ship has the knowledge and the experience of 20 years on, but she is the 2nd most beautiful ship i ever build. The best looking and more beautiful is Santa Ana :)
Great job John, It turned out Beautiful. Don't stop doing your videos I really enjoy them , I get a lot of ideas for my own builds, not as good as yours but very enjoyable. Looking forward to seeing your next build. Pet Wolf for me
Thank you very much Dave!!! I won't stop, in a couple of weeks i will begin the HMS Beagle :) I will give Wolf a big hug for you :)
Been a great series John.
Thank you very much Jim!!!
Hi John.. Wow!!!! A labour of love is launched. I really enjoyed watching you create this work of art. I can't wait to purchase an OCcre kit so that I can put into practice all that I have learnt from you. I am so looking forward to the next but in the meantime I will watch this a few more times. I loved the classical music but for all those critics I suggest ..Frank Sinatra...'I did it my way'.
Thank you very much Keith, i am really glad that you enjoyed this series!!! You will enjoy any kit you choose, believe me :) I would love to put many music pieces, the only problem is that RUclips allow me to use only certain pieces...
Another masterful build, John. Both you and Wolf should be very proud. I also watched the full build of the Santisima. Also an amazing model. Perhaps I'll join you on the next one. Maybe the Beagle
Thank you very much Gus!!! I will be happy to join me in the next series, i will begin to build the Beagle :)
Well Done!!
Thank you very much!!!
Great work John, 11months it’s gone by so quickly
Thank you very much John!!! The outcome is a work of art :)
Beautiful work there John I know it takes time I built the Mayflower and it took me 9 months to complete it so I know what you went through it's a lot of work and people don't realize it you did a wonderful job it looks very very nice
Thank you very much Bill!!! Indeed a lot of work and also the filming and editing added some more :)
Simply incredible build John as always. I have the HMS Beagle on my workbench , ready to build along with you. I even have my own "wolf" under the table to help me along ;)
Thank you very much Greg!!! This is going to be fun!!! Give me a week or two and we will begin building the Beagle :)
Great Job! Unbelievable. I buy it too today. My Santisima is almost ready.
Thank you very much Markus!!! You will enjoy building her and if you'll have the time there is a complete series of her :)
What a great job!!!
Glad you liked it!!!
BRAVO!!
Thank you very much!!!
Thank you for your inspiration, dedication and craftsmanship to the hobby. I am looking forward to your next project.

Thank you very much!!! Wolf wants to meet Molly!!!
Precioso !!!!
Thank you very much Joan!!!
Revenu sur ce superbe vaisseaux !! Félicitations...
Missed you Robert, thank you very much!!!
Super series once again, learned a lot. I truly appreciate your effort in explaining things as you go... Titanic videos next.. Thanx again John
Glad that it was useful!!! Thank you very much for your kind words!!! Titanic is different, you will love the series :)
The quality of the OcCre kit is amazingly good. I am building HMS Bouty by constructo and it is not of that great quality.
I have bought the Santissima Trinidad by OcCre and I hope to start building it soon after finishing the bounty... Thx to John his video serie of his Santissima build.
Looking forward to your build of the HMS Beagle!
Thank you very much Peter!!! I couldn't agree with you more :) In a couple of weeks i will begin the HMS Beagle :)
Le escribo desde Alicante, España. Estoy construyendo el navío Montañés y sigo muy de cerca sus vídeos. Estoy en la fase su su último vídeo, en número 12, y espero con ansiedad el siguiente. Siga así. Saludos
Hi Paco! Glad i am able to help!!!
Hello John and Wolf thank you for this beautiful boat l just finished the vies 91 vidéo and i will start this projet i did the Santisima but Thicke the Montanes is even
Hi Normand!!! I am glad that you liked the series and the model. The Montanes is harder that Santisima but you will enjoy it a lot!!! Me and Wolf we wish you happy building!!! :)
Very interesting video and beautiful model! Montanes will be my next ship after Nuestra Senora de las Mercedes and I think I'm getting ready for such model. I have six part variant and your videos will be great help.
In case of some voices against gloss varnish. I can fully understand your choice. I have no place for big glass showcase in home so such varnish can protect model against dust.
Thank you for your comment. You will enjoy building it, she is hard though, but it's a challenge :)
John another breath taking job. Jin loves the music and said he is really good when are you going to be that good? Wow she said that to me.....lol
Great job have enjoyed following along with builds hope to see more soon.thanks again for sharing your hobby with us.
Thank you very much for your kind words my friend!!!
John, spectacular. I bow to the master. Can i ask which you prefer, or even recommend - the Montanes or the Trinidad? I'm coming to the end of the Bounty and I'm thinking about my next challenge - all the best David
Thank you very much David!!! The Trinidad is beautiful but Montanes is amazing and it's a little more difficult, especially with the rigging. Montanes definitely :)
Απλά υπέροχο!!
Χαιρομαι που σου αρεσει, σε ευχαριστω πολυ!!!
Beautiful build! Have you ever thought of making interiors to your cabins?
Thank you very much!!! Yes it crossed my mind but the interior wouldn't be visible it this model.
Just now build my first ship model. Dam', this is a litttle q-ship, and it's so hard...
You must have patient and you will build it :) She will look fantastic when she is done :)
Hello John everything that you have done is fantastic I can’t believe how good it is. Me know how wolf is doing. What up ship are you doing next. Let us know
Thank you very much Bill for your kind words!!! I will begin the HMS Beagle in a couple of weeks :)I will be happy to see you there :)
Exelente Arbeit, mal wieder selbst übertroffen.Seit wann baust du schon Schiffe aus Holz? Freue mich schon auf das neue Projekt.
Thank you very much!!! I started building wooden model ship back on 2001. In a couple of weeks i will begin the HMS Beagle, stay tuned :)
Hi john, how does the main mast flag attach. Just a rope to mast?
A rope and a pulley to the mast at the top and you can tie it wherever you have a free pin.
Did you make the glue dispenser or make it yourself?
I bought it from here : www.super-hobby.co.uk/products/Dozownik-do-klejow-CA-PVA-UV-10szt..html
I See now the Last 20 vids of the Serie
To Help me Finish the endevour IT was a great lesson
I still have little Problems With the drawings to See and read ... Pice for pices IT was a ship 😂😀😂
I Wish you many fun With the endevour
Thank you very much Mike!!!
lovely build well done, just one query, why use gloss varnish? matte or satin would look better. (I think)
Thank you very much! I like the way she looks with gloss, i just love it. I hate matt or satin.
The boat is beautiful, but in my opinion there is too much shiny varnish on it. It was also necessary to remove the hair on the ropes.
It is a very beautiful ship, i agree with you. You don't like gloss, me on the other hand i love it, so it is a point of view that has to do with the personal taste. Regarding the ropes , i do not like wax because of the residue that leaves behind and the flame doesn't work fine.
Bravo !
Je trouve dommage que, contrairement aux caillebotis et au château-arrière, les fanaux ne s'illuminent point.
Thank you very much! It would be impossible to hide the cables in the middle lantern and it would look ugly, that's why they do not light up.
@@JohnsWoodenShips D'accord, merci de ces précisions.
Encore bravo pour tout le travail et le talent mit en œuvre !
@@galaad Thank you very much for your kind words!!!
i want but i dont have time and patience for building it
im building my own flying dutchman and black pearl though by hand
Respect, BRAVO for doing that without schematics.
Great model, but Montanes was built in 1794, not 1974. Bit of a type error on the nameplate 😅
Thank you very much 😊 i know, you have to watch the video about the stand base to understand why it says 1974 :)
Beethoven would have loved it!
Yes, probably he would, i have watched it 6 times already :)
A bunch of still shots?
If you want the full series it' here ruclips.net/video/K_KVMiSyBxU/видео.html
Love the ship but for me the varnish killed it
I love it too and i love more the varnish.
Wjat te Next ship?
The HMS Beagle, i will begin in a couple of weeks!
algun dia construire un barco asi, lo unico que no me gusto fue el transparente que usaste quedo muy espeso y tapa algunos detalles del barco, debes usar ua capa de laca mas delgada, gracias por compartir
Thank you very much! You will build what makes you happy and you must not try to pass your "likes" to other people. There is not "should do that" because it is my build and i do it the way i like it.
Schrecklich 🤦
Show me your work to see if it's better cause i think that there isn't any.
Sorry, it pains me to see so much work ruined by varnish.
What color is your car Denis?
I estimate you won't answer my question. Perhaps then you can show me some of your work but then again if any of your work exists you will probably protect my eyes by not showing to me!
@@bencristofani3116 You don’t get it do you Ben?
This is my build and I do it the way I like, not the way you or anybody else wants.
If you want to paint it matt or satin you are free to do so.
Buy one, build it and paint the way you like.
Also to make it more realistic you have to use the same type of wood they used when the ship was build.
You do not have to use airbrush, only paint brush.
Also you have to use nails in the hull and cover them with tar. The lower part of the hull must be cover with copper plates.
The masts must be made out of woodstrips tied together. And I can continue to tell you different things that YOU HAVE to do to make it realistic.
By the way, I do not like your car, what ever it is, it is not the proper type of car, it is not realistic even though it is on 1:1 scale. You have to change it so I would like it.
Now do you get it?
i would tend to agree that the varnish is a bit to shiny for me... but I am not seeing it in person so I do not know how much of the shine is due to the lighting for the pictures and the video. I now that my ships look different on the camera than they do to the eye. The ship looks absolutely fantastic and something you should be proud of. Keep up the great work!
Navio de su Majestad Montañes de 70 cañones y 4° clase.estuvo en Trafalgar y lucho con fiereza como muchos otros.
A very beautiful one :)
