Thanks for the information John on different companies. As I started my first model Beagle by Occre. Indeed even for me as a novice builder the instructions by Occre are up to high standard. The instruction videos they make are also helpfull. But most of all your tips and tricks help me a lot in building the Beagle.

Nice video of your skills. I made the Constructo Bounty last year. I actually purchased the kit in 2002 but ran into problems with the hull which caused me to make an error in the planking. I left it on the shelf gathering dust for years before seeing a build of the same model. I stripped the frames about 2 years ago and virtually started again once I realised what I needed to do. I replaced the odd colour rigging and replaced the ships boat too. I made many super detail changes and copper plated the hull. I also opened out the transom and added many little details including correcting the side windows to the original Admiralty plans. The model was my first wooden ship and was a good build once I was able correct the hull errors. The ship looks good now and like you she sits in a display case which is a must have for any detailed model. Anyway I enjoy your builds and videos, great work. JH ;-)

Hi John.I have been doing a lot of searching on You Tube about ship models and as it is over twenty years since I last built a ship model, which was the Caldercraft (Jotika) HMS Agamemnon. Caldercraft models are very very good, but are much more expensive than most of the other companies, and the instructions and quality of materials are very good. However, I have found from my own research, that Occre seem to be the way to go now that I am getting back into ship modelling again. I am starting with the Occre Bounty, cut away model, but I may decide to fully plank it and make it a full model, we will see when I come to start building it. I am happy to say the model arrived yesterday and everything looks very well made and the instructions are crystal clear and in perfect English. I think I made a good choice.
    Regards
    Geoff.

Well John I would have to say you did good on this video and I could not agree with you more about what you have said. I look for the fine details and close up pictures also. I love the fine craftmanship on cannons and the different sizes on the rope. As far as wood goes if it is very bad I can always get better wood, but that may not be the same for others. No one should have to go to after markets to get good parts for there build, you have already paid for it. But there is always a way to fix someone else mess ups and laziness. I stop there....lol

P.S.: I went with OcCre Corsair for the first kit and I can say it has some flaws in the materials (I'm not the only one who actually broke some of the pieces trying to bend them hehe especially the bulwark) as well as I had to request instructions in English additionally (and they could be a bit better and more extended with more pictures) but the aftermarket service was indeed great and very responsive.

I want to make a little coment on my expirience with Artesanía Latina. I have made 3 ships from them, the Sultan (Arab Dhow), the Virgini (Schooner) and the San Francisco II (Galeon ). Two of them were mising wood sticks to make the masts, i had to make them out of other sticks that didnt match the color. Also there were lots of steps missing in the instructions, which led me to skip them. Fortunately, I was able to correct all those mistakes, but it would have been easyer to do so if the instructions told me to do them at the right moment.

    Great video John. Very helpful.
Up to now I have only made 2 wooden ship models, the Beagle, by Occre, and the Revenge by Victory Models ( which I believe is a joint collaboration between Euromodels and Amati).
I found the Beagle was exceptional in its detail, instructions, plans and materials, and for the cost I think amazing. The build series on RUclips from Occre for this model made it an ideal starter for a complete beginner like myself. I know you are planning on making this model after you have finished the Montanes, and I look forward to hearing your opinions about it through the build.
The Revenge was amazing in its quality of materials, instructions and plans and I thought it was a huge step up from the Beagle in almost all areas (including price) although I would have loved a bit more deck detail. So as far as the Victory models range goes, I would be very happy to do another. In fact I have my sights on the HMS Vanguard - if only I had room in my house to put it somewhere :(
I'm currently building the Occre Mississippi Paddle Steamer and I'm finding the instructions and plans aren't as clear, although the materials are pretty decent. I suspect that its because this is an earlier model from Occre and that they have improved a lot since this model first came out.
However, like you I have an overall liking for Occre from my limited experience, and I love how they like to engage with thier customers - always a good sign) so looking forward to my next build - their latest model - The Endurance.
Thanks again John your videos are invaluable!

It is also very important to check every section to make sure it is all there! I have several of their ships and bought them as a complete kit which is cheaper. Occre actually works with deagostini on their models i think. I got the Sovereign of the Seas kit (total noob move, since it was, and still is, my first large kit, it's a massive motherf****r), and i got occre pamflets in some of the issues. I don't know if occre makes the kits for deagostini, or just advises them. The most recent one, the San Martín, also was sponsored by occre if i'm not mistaken. Quality is pretty good, but some of the blocks in the Sovereign kit have broken when trying to open the holes up a bit. I also have artesania latina kit Le Hussard, and as John says, shit ass instructions, and about 3-4/10 quality, some pieces are good, some are just straight garbage (the fucking bow section of the keel broke straight outta the box). Also got the Titanic from Amati, planks are shit. And Victory from Cosntructo, i just don't understand why the bow figurehead as some nice metal casts, and then the the aft castle just has some brass etched bullshit. @11:10, that looks like it was ripped like balsa strip stock is when you get a model airplane…

It is not balsa, do not remember it's type but definitely not balsa.

@@JohnsWoodenShips I didn’t explain well enough. I just meant it looked like the same method was used. I don’t know HOW many sheets of stringers I’ve had to toss because of breakage or none of them were uniform.
That’s all I meant: cheap manufacturing process.

@@RossPotts I agree, many pieces were poorly made from cheap materials.

I do not know for sure but i believe they are.

I have a feeling that De Agostini is not a model ship company but a publishing service that sales, among bugs and earth minerals, model ships created by other companies and I strongly believe it's Artesania Latina's models.
