Building the model ship Danmark, from a Billings Boats kit

- Shows the stages in Ross Callaghan's build of the model ship "Danmark" - from an old Billings Boats kit. The "Danmark" is the training ship for the nation of Denmark and has been used in this role since the 1930s when the ship was built.
The model is 1.2 metres long, includes 20 sails, and is to a 1:75 scale. It took around 8 months to build. The video shows all stages of the build including laying down the hull, attaching the frames, planking, decking, making all the buildings and accessories on the decks. It shows how the masts, spars and sails were built and the fixed and running rigging. The end result is a really great model ship!
Great video, I bought the same model kit 50 years ago, I built the hull then life got in the way, who knows I might complete the job now after watching how to complete the job.
This was the first large ship model I saw my Dad build somewhere around 1972. I think it took him two years in total and it turned into a work of art. 50 years later he's passed on but my brother still has the finished ship and the custom display base my Dad made for it. Beautiful kit.
Absolutely gorgeous work!! I’m just beginning to dabble my toes in the world of model ship kits. I built several in my middle school years, but never to this level of completeness nor complexity. I’m hoping my work is half as good as yours and I’ll be satisfied. Well done, well done indeed!!!
I'm just about to start this kit. I hope mine turns out as good as yours. thanks for the inspiration.
My wife said I need a hobby and suggested model boat building.
I'm having trouble soldering circuit boards now due to tremor in hand. So I can't see boat building happening.
Great job.
Of all the tall ships, which are many, the Danmark is my favorite. I served in the US Navy from '68-'72. I was stationed on the USS Independence CVA-62. While sailing off the Bahamas we came across the Danmark under full sail. Years later my Wife and I took a cruise and while visiting St. Thomas, the Danmark was docked right in front of our cruise ship. Although I would love to build this ship model, I do not have such patience nor being in my mid '70's my abilities for doing so is something I no longer have. I certainly enjoyed your video and hope you and your family members enjoy it for years to come!!! I will just have to enjoy my Royal Copenhagen Plate with the Danmark on it.
The time and patience it takes to complete a build like this is truly inspiring. I can relate to the part where you say "what level of perfection you're willing to accept." Spending countless hours on the smallest details. I applaud this effort. That's a masterpiece right there.
Pretty and neatly build. Congrats................
Built one myself started 1991 finished 1996 ,a lot of rewarding work ,I still have it protected in a glass wood cabinet good on mate from down under,Nick
Totally audibly exclaimed, "sails!". Well done!
Whoa, that was an epic build. Eight months! The outcome is fabulous though. Compliments from Poland!
Hello. Great and interesting video of a very pretty ship, and a good choice. Thanks.
I am a Danish citizen by the way 🙂
A beautiful model . A couple of tricks are . one, if you have bits sticking up off the robe work . Is to run a block of beeswax along it . Two, make a neat job of cutting the ends off ropes , is to use a nail clippers .
Thank you so much for taking your time producing this video. Excellent job and beautiful ship.
More importantly none of that monotonous boring music drowning out the commentary, thank you, well done.
Muy lindo trabajo amigo. Felicitaciones.
Dear Ross. I have the greatest admiration for you. A very difficult build which you negotiated masterfully. The only Billings kit I have built is the Oseberg Viking Ship and that was great fun. What a beautiful hierloom to hand down. If I was given that I would treasure it. I hope you have a display case to keep the dust off that amazing rigging. All the very best to you and your family. Kind regards. Pana Peters.
Amazing work Ross. Thanks for sharing.
I am still dragging around a Norske Love, Billings kit from the late 70's. Have moved on, but I still hang onto that old girl.. Lovely work, Sir.
Just an excellent video! Thanks for posting.
Beautiful ship and a very fine video.
Greetings and best wishes from Bavarian
That rigging is crazy! Fantastic job
Be proud, you’ve done a great job. I started building the Revell plastic version of US CONSTITUTION. I began the hull and cannon decks 1966. Married and moved 1973. Bekins movers built cardboard protective box to be able to move it 1250 miles to Texas. It made it unharmed. While unemployed I began the masts and rigging. I completed the majority of the rigging and mounted the sails. Kept it on the mantle our some time until a candle was place under its bow.......you can imagine. Damage was done to some spars and rigging. Now it sits in my office desk/hutch never to be finished as some few years ago I lost some of my vision.......so there it sits. Be proud. You’ve done well. My admiration goes to you. Regards
The Lord will make it up to you in the world to come, man. He misses no-thing..
Great build, wish I can have it. I’ll be more than happy to call you grand dad.
Excellent !
OMG🤯😳😳😳 absolutely fantastic build eight months well done that man bravo. I have just brought one from a charity shop and so happy as I would have the patients. To do this. You have made me realise and appreciate the skill that it takes to build one of these to a height standard. The man in this video seems to be Experienced in building these modal boats and it took him 8 months I’m In or pardon the pun. 👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you for a very clear commentary, your patience is extraordinary , it is a credit to you and should be in a maritime museum for people to marvel at, thanks mate.
Thank you Sir, for building such a nice model of Danmark, the schoolship of my homecountry. It looks amazing on the water in real life, and surely amazing too in your model.
Holger Danske!
Fantastic! You did a fine job. It takes a special kind of person to build a wooden ship model.
A lot of patience is required. What a thrilling Hobby.
Thank you for sharing, quite a nice vessel, take care and God bless amen.
beautiful ship and a very fine video. greetings and best wishes from Denmark
Fantastic job! Thank you for sharing
Beauty sport !. Is Danmark still sailing ?. Boat looks terrific . Thanks. DAVE
Yes, still sailing.
Absolutely beautiful!
The Friggin Rigging. !!...You did a fine Job.....I salute You....Building model ships is a extreme pleasure
beautiful job, you shoud be proud
Great work, congrats
Great job indeed and with a quality brand like Billings Boats nothing can go wrong ! :)
Great job! Although the author is not quite a young man, but his voice is a young guy !!!
Such a nice video - thanks for sharing it with us😊😊😊
thank you, I just about to begin with this kit
Thank you for showing this. Very inspirational.
a model to be proud of.
Hi Ross. Great work on an interesting model ship. I have the same kit of the same vintage and can now see for myself how this ship gets put together. You've given me some great tips on how to proceed. Cheers!
this model is a museum model exelent build
Many years ago I built my first ship from a billings kit, it was called the Seeadler, a three masted sailing ship, great fun to build, well done on your build, my model ended up in a shipping company reception in London, now building a model of HMS Victory from a Corel kit, far more involved with far mor detail, best wishes. 👍
Nice job on the Danmark mate.
Awesome job!
Very gorgeous. It deserves a beautiful protecting display case. Very pleasant video.
Well done Comrade
Now that's more like it! Very nice Sir. (See the difference)
Your passion for all things nautical is evident.
(I’d never have the patience, expertise or dexterity for such a project)
Amazing - a beautyfull model of a beautyfull ship.
Nice job
A wonderful and beautiful ship. You must be proud?
Fantástico !!! Parabéns! ótima construção. É uma pena que aqui no Brasil é muito dificil encontrar este material.
Great work.
lovely build, well done. A little tip for rigging lines, run them over a beeswax block to remove all the fur (hairs) a lot quicker than painting.
Absolutely beautiful job, well done

Beautiful work! I really like light wood planes, but I have to recognize that sailboats are more impressive to expose.
I have a suggestion, on youtube there is a lot about the techniques to look like wear that make it very realistic!
Beautiful. ❤️
Nice video and a great job on the build. Model looks stellar!
Don't forget to make a sealed case for it! Dust and years almost destroyed my father's ships.
Was going to say the very same thing. Ross has done a lovely job. When uncased models, especially ones as intricate as this start to collect dust it just ruins them. And with the best will in the world, if you try and clean the dust off, which you can never entirely do, you end up breaking things.
Built a few over the years myself and you did an outstanding job! Looks great!
Good job
Congratulations, this is a great job, thank you for sharing with us
Congratulations!
Well done!
Looks like you're doing a marvellous job there, and having a great time doing it too! I have the Danmark and Cutty Sark and like yours they languish in the loft! Great job on the video presentation as well!
Дуже гарно. У Вас золоті руки. Вам наснаги до нових звершень, а кораблю сім футів під кілем.
“Danmark” is actually considered to be somewhat underrigged, meaning carrying a smaller area of sails than what could be expected for a ship of this size. This is due to the loss of her predecessor the barque “København” (Copenhagen), believed to be lost sometime in December 1928 in the southern Pacific. Nobody wanted a repeat of that so the sail area of the Danmark was reduced for safety’s sake.
Interesting. Thanks for the info.
Fantastic!!

Great job!
Google it. It has just docked in Ireland 20th May.
OZ about time
Rid would you be able to restore the Denmark ? Keith
Thank you for your reply, this box does not have any sails in it? can I make new sails from
the plan?
I checked my old plans, and yes you can make sails based on your plans. (Plan 2). I use the best quality cream muslin. I then cut out the sails based on the plan allowing 5mm for hems. My wife then sews the lines using cream cotton. I then sew all the hems or glue them. It's easier to glue them.
I'm doing this at the moment for the Cutty Sark which is a similar size to the Danmark. Along slow laborious process, but satisfying as it all comes together. Enjoy your rigging!!
Wow...just...wow. I've been considering building an Eagle (Horst Wessel), but...jeez, compared to you, I've got the patience of a gnat and will probably have to buy one completed (and I know the ones for sale will never match the detail of one built out of passion) if I'm ever to have it to display. I went aboard the Danmark (moored) when she visited the Coast Guard Academy in the 1980s. Few people know of her history with the Academy during WWII. She was actually commissioned in the U.S. Coast Guard for a while. I did sail the Eagle from Australia back to New London in 1988 and then to Europe the next year. The barques were very similar and your model is amazingly detailed and accurate. Can you recommend a good kit to start with that's available today?
Yes you do need patience to make model ships, and good problem solving skills. The Harvey would be a good starter to see if you enjoy the hobby. It has pretty straight forward planking and laser cut parts. Kits are widely available on sites like ebay. (But watch my video of the build first so you can access good instructions). After this I would suggest the simpler Billings or Artesania latina kits. But watch out - model ship building is addictive!
@@calros3 Thanks for the reply. Are you (and forgive me for not placing your accent) in OZ?

@@calros3 AHA!! I was being polite.... Still mad at you Kiwis! (I jest) On Eagle in '88, we were scheduled to sail into Auckland, (I could have met you 30 years ago!) but we were disappointedly not allowed. Your government was foolish enough to require us to declare we had no nuclear weapons on board before entry (can you imagine?).....My government was foolish enough to require the Glomar response. Did any of the other tall ships show up, and did you go see them? I ended up buying one of the Gia Nhien Eagle models from Viet Nam....It's pretty darned nice and miraculously arrived with no damage at all.
Did the sail material come in the box or did you have to buy it I have just got hold of an old Danmark kit box 45years old and never opened and i will built it soon.
The kit includes sails but they are printed with lines so I buy new linen and make my own using the included ones as patterns. My wife sews the lines with cream cotton. This looks much better. Enjoy your build.
Hi Ross...Fabulous build. I wonder if you could give me a bit of help on the model I'm making? I'm building a Constructo model of the Cutty Sark, and got as far as having fitted all the standing rigging for the masts. The instructions apart from the plans are really sparse and poor. I'm not sure what is the best order in which to fit the spars - I notice you do one mast complete at a time, rather than say do all the lower masts and move up all together. Have you any advice on this please. Cheers Terry
I think it is best to do a full set of sails on one mast at a time. Equivalent lines from each of the sails on a mast tend to come down so they are side by side on the pinrails. I always try to get these lines coming down tidily with no crossing over. If you pin one in the wrong place or the model doesn't provide enough places (it happens!) or you are not sure where the lines go (bad plans) and/or you need to re-arrange the lines, you wouldn't discover there was a problem till the last sail if you were doing spars from each mast, one at a time. I have also learnt not to tie up/glue the lines around the pins till all of the spars/sails are fitted. This allows you to adjust or tighten them so the final presentation of the sails is the best you can possibly get. Hope this helps. All the best for your build.
@@calros3 Hi Ross..Thanks for your very helpful info and advice. Sorry to be slow to reply - I'm in the UK, so there's a time lag. I've spent ages studying the plans and getting near to making a start! I'm not going to put sails on, preferring just to see the rigging, so won't have too much to do. Thanks again, all the best. Terry
Armarlo es fácil... Cortar... Pegar y esperar... Todas las piezas encastran perfectamente..... El valor es hacerlo pieza por pieza.... ASÍ CONSTRUÍ LA FRAGATA LIBERTAD...
Great gob waw lovely

Hi..are you selling that ?
No way! It's not radio controlled.
Not for sale.
8 months 1hr a day?! Only kidding.

Those instructions sure did not come with my kit. Not a fun build
sorry kiwi dude
when spraying wear mask bro very dangerous for youre lungs.
Nice work.
But a bit boring. Lot of talk.
All that is needed is how to fit. There's no need of explaining much. If u show how it is done. That's enough
Fantastic!
