I just have to say I am really impressed with your channel and particularly these detailed breakdowns of the different ammunition. I noticed that you didn't end up continuing this series with the ideas you mentioned for future episodes. It would be fantastic to see an accuracy comparison of various riffled slugs at 50-100m. There isn't a lot of quality data out there at the quality of your vids. You earned a subscriber! Great stuff.
Thanks! I have a lot more fun making hunting videos, but have to say your slug accuracy video would be interesting! I find that each of my shotguns seem to like (shoot most accurately) a different slug, so what works for me might not work for everyone else.
Great job.. Really like seeing the wading and projectile exposed outside the shell. Gives one a clear idea of what the round is all about. Maybe a video of Winchester's Zinc slug?
Professionally done video, excellent job. I run these whenever I go north as I want to save my Brenneke and RWS rounds, for they are very hard to find up here these days. I've heard good things about the Canadian Challenger 1 1/8oz Gualandi slugs, any chance of a video?
Have shot plenty of these and the higher velocity plain tru-ball slugs. The 1600fps version is very accurate with recoil that is memorable. The deep penetrator version kicks about the same and is just as accurate Barrel leading happens equally fast with either version. Two shots will leave significant lead streaks in the barrel of my Beretta 1301. It takes a stainless tornado brush and a lot of back and forth to remove it all. I do it carefully over newspaper to dispose of all the lead that rains down. I also wear disposable gloves and wipe down the cleaning rod after use. In my usage the nylon ball always comes free. At 10 yards the nylon ball punches through my light plywood target holder too.
I love all your videos. very informative. I really like the 12 g slug test. I would love to see you do more slug test for use on deer like max long range accuracy , penetration and expansion out of smooth bore guns with as many different brand rifled slugs as possible. PS you are a great dad for teaching your kids the shooting and hunting life. keep up the good work sir.
Well done video. FYI, Federal says "The Deep Penetrator projectile's higher antimony lead ensures better terminal performance." I would assume for this application and higher antimony lead would be used otherwise the lead would just collapse under the copper plating.
I finally got to apply these slugs in flesh! I harvested a black bear this spring, and all 3 slugs passed completely through with the exception of a 3rd of one of the skirts broke off about a quarter inch thick. 2 passed through the heavy leg bone and muscle. There was relatively low bloodshot meat compared to regular soft lead and high velocity slugs.
Cool review, last week I got the low recoil version and was as advertised on paper groups tight group but I'm looking for a non hunting slug more like a tactical applications and the Winchester super X looks like a winner for minimal penetration just like your test
For "tactical" use there are some with lower recoil. I might suggest some of the 7/8 oz slugs as they will have less recoil and still a flatter trajectory than the 1 oz, while still being a massive wad of lead.
I really enjoy watching your videos - thanks for making them. I could not find the Penetrators anywhere locally in BC at all, and the only place to get Brenneke's was Basspro online. It seems like the general public has trust in regular rifled slugs when it comes to bear defense, but to me it feels much better when you know you have those mighty slugs handy while backpacking)
+AnotherReincarnation I had to order from Sportsman's Guide. Seems like nobody carries the Deep Penetrator where I live. Also, I was lucky enough to order around Christmas time which I was able to use a Free Shipping code. Not sure if one is available now but they cost me under $5/box. WELL worth it.
I would like to see the Winchester Razorback 12ga 1 1/8 slug I have been carrying it for a long time as my slug of choice in my side saddle. Thanks again for a good video.
Well done sir, and thank you for the review! I'm heading into bear country and want to make sure I'm packing the right ammo. Just ordered enough to fill the mag tube.
I live in an area where we cannot use rifles to deer hunt on public land. I use Hornady SST 300 gr sabots. The sabots do put a deer down with decent shot placement. Even though the sabots are close to a 308 in energy on the target, they lack the velocity to create hydrostatic shock. I prefer the 308 for it's larger margin of error. Don't take me wrong I do not feel handicapped by the shotgun but I am more careful with shot selection and I shoot the deer in the shoulder blades to make sure it's not getting away.
Did not experience any noticeable copper fouling in the guns I used with this slug, but have since come back to plain-old regular low recoil 1oz foster slugs as my preference.
I get this is a 10 year old video, but I'm curious as to the penetration performance of the 3 in. Truball 1700 (the most powerful slug in the Truball line) vs the Deep Penetrator. I also wonder how it would hold up, and if there's a substantial difference in the materials used to create the slugs.
Thanks for this very informative video - it addresses a question I’ve had as I carry a shotgun in British Columbia when fishing. I am wondering whether a test into a harder material would give some more relevant information. When you are talking about 1000 pound brown bears, the ability to penetrate the skull is arguably the most important characteristic. After experimenting with a variety of slugs (not including these Federal Copper jacketed slugs) I settled on Remington AccuTip 12 Gauge, 3” magnum rounds. Not scientific, but was experimenting with 8” thick Douglas Fir beam cut-offs. The AccuTip rounds went right through - none of the others came close. Another question: I am firing these Sabot rounds out of an 18.5” smooth bore tactical shotgun (Baretta Nova). A 24” rifled barrel is available, but that would hang up on the brush too much. At relevant ranges (inside 30 yards - I cannot justify shooting a bear that is farther away) they were very accurate. I did not know when I ordered these on-line that Remington only recommends the AccuTip rounds for fully rifled barrels. Would an aftermarket barrel with a riffled choke be more accurate? Is there another reason to not use these Sabot slugs in a smooth bore barrel?
A rifled choke would add a degree of accuracy. IMO, though, one advantage of putting some spin on a shotgun slug is that it will allow the slug to impart more energy into the target by causing the slug to expand more quickly. This wouldn't necessarily apply, IMO, with the Truball Deep Penetraters because of the hardness of the slug (harder lead) and its thicker harder copper coating. If I came up on an angry bear in the woods who was intent on having me for lunch, I would definitely feel comfortable having a tube loaded with these slugs. Another good choice would be Brenneke's Magnum Crush (3") that has bodacious 3800 ft/lbs energy at the muzzle with a 656 grain slug (Used to be 4500+ ft/lbs with 666 grains but they tweaked it down). Brenneke's Black Magic slug would also be an excellent choice. Accurate, hard hitting, with excellent penetration. The Truball DP's can be found very inexpensive which is another positive factor. On sale, they can found for 50 cents a round, not on sale 80 cents everywhere all day long. Good luck !
Alright, I took this load deer hunting this season. I was personally unimpressed with the terminal performance on game such as deer, and recommend it only be used for animals requiring the penetration it delivers (bear, etc.). It basically punches a clean hole, with very little/no tissue damage beyond the edge of said hole, even though the TSC is significant. Its accuracy also leaves a bit to be desired, compared to conventional slugs. Federal Truball LR produces, from my actual shotgun, 50 yard 5 shot groups of average edge to edge diameter about 3" fired from prone. This loading is at least double and sometimes triple that.
I'd really be interested if you tested the low recoil Truball in gel. If you want to see something interesting, plug their BC's and MV's into a calculator. The LR version gives up very little at 50 yards in velocity and energy. Quibbling small amounts. IT surprised me.
You smart cookie. I listened twice, but failed to understand the second possible reason why the copper rifling is missing on the slug. You believe that the rifling may have been deformed, FILLING IN the slots/troughs of the slug, is that right? After watching the two videos you've done in this series, I'll be sure to pay attention to why kind of slug I purchase in the future. Night and day results.
Hey Brobee, just watched a couple of your slug tests, and I also camp in Grizzly country in the Rockies. Live in Canada and cannot get the Dixie or Brenneke hard cast slugs. Would the Truball 3" at 2800 ftlbs do more damage on the chest or shoulder, vs the Rem ultra bonded 3" at over 3000 ftlbs? Both are a hard material. Phil.
They say on the website that it's a much harder lead (higher antimony alloy). www.federalpremium.com/products/details/shotshell.aspx?id=902 That, and the copper must help it hold form and penetrate so well. Thanks for the great test and review! I use these same slugs for my grizzly defense shotgun and I was wondering how well they would work.
Good slugs. We baught some of these for bear deffence when were camping or night fishing off the river banks. Not to say theres been sightings of sasquatch to lol
Possible future test idea - the Hornady SST or those other red-tipped slugs. They require a rifled shotgun barrel, though. That TruBall Deep Penetrator is awesome. Great reviews!
great vid! another sub here! I'm looking thru 12g slug options for my smooth bore sx3 semi auto to use as a backup for my moose hunting trip this fall. I think you sold it for me bud. gonna get them in 3" for a bit more hitting power. cheers
I am curious if you have access to the DDupleks slugs such as Hexolit 32 and the Monolit line in Canada? They are very impressive, although the hexolit may destroy more meat than you would care for.
I'm not associated with Sportsmans' Guide, but they always have these available on their site. Other websites also have them, not just SG. I don't know if your state allows online sales/delivery but that is a choice to look at. BTW I normally try to support my local gun shop, but if they don't have what I want in stock, I go online.
Hello Brobee223: I was wondering if you were still planning on the long range slug accuracy testing? I ask because I was very much looking forward to your findings. Especially due to the fact that you are very thorough and precise, both in execution as well as your manner of speaking. In fact, you ought to be a professional narrator or radio personality - seriously. Thank you!
Not sure if I'll get to that video, if I have a chance to come back I think it will be in a hunting adventure context. Appreciate your kind words, thanks!
I've got some gun+barrel combinations that shoot them into 2 inch clover-leafs at 100, and others that spray them all over the berm....hard to generalize, so unfortunately I'd have to recommend trying them yourself.
Bro, I thought I was gonna watch something in English! I'm just kidding, but why not narrate like the one we speak normally. "Curious to me" was the need for the accuracy and complexity in diction when you have video. Bro, sometimes less is more, and when making videos for the masses, it may be "more better" to take the sophisticated speech down a notch. Good stuff, just sayin'. Thanks for posting.

I tested this loading. I did note "significant" fleet-yaw, which is why your recovered projectile is asymmetric.

Excellent. Thank you for an objective assessment. Out go the Winchester Super-X....
I would like to see photos of side by side comparisons of this slug and the hollow point version.
That would be an interesting comparison....perhaps in next year's video!

Nice test, Ive been looking into purchasing a box or two of these.
Great videos very informative. How about testing the accuracy and penetration of the score slug loads since they are loaded here in canada.
Great idea, I've been thinking about either the Score or Challenger slugs for this coming year's shotgun season.
Winchester Super X slugs for home defense, Federal TruBall Deep Penetrator for large predator defense.
I'm gonna start looking into some hardcast 71 caliber round ball slugs loads pretty soon
Would love to try some big pumpkin balls!
Ha! I just ordered 2 boxes of these yesterday!
What I would ask is in a smooth bore shotgun. Where would the copper fouling foul up at?? Since there are no grooves.
Did not experience any noticeable copper fouling in the guns I used with this slug, but have since come back to plain-old regular low recoil 1oz foster slugs as my preference.
Love your reviews Brobee! Im very interested in finding good slugs for bear defence. Can you please do an episode on the challenger magnum slug?
Will see if I can source some and will try to test them this coming summer!
Very well done review. Got a thumbs up from me!

You should do audiobook narration!
You are not the first person to suggest this! My kids would disagree through....;)
I wonder if these would foul up my barrel like a regular lead slug does . I hate trying to get that stuff out of the bore.
You will get a light copper deposit, not bad. Some foaming bore cleaner should fix it fast.
Have had no fouling issues associated with these slugs in any of my guns.
Where did you get thst bear target?
THANKS
I can’t find these in anything but the 1350fps flavor. “Human Hobby” (you lol)has a video showing the 1600fps flavor. I’d like some of those!
Living where we do there is not much selection...I test and shoot almost everything I can find! Suspect 1600fps would be a bruiser, but effective!
