Not having to worry about that situation of apartment dwelling, I hadn't even given that a passing concern. I live in a wooden home on a couple of acres and my neighbors are several hundred feet away or more in any given direction, so overpenetration isn't a concern of mine, hence my preference for full-powered rounds of 00 Buckshot. But I Feel for ya and you gotta do what you gotta do. And in your case, the types of rounds discussed in this video DO seem to be the right choice for you.
look at his other videos with birdshot. In an apartment I'd recommend large birdshot like #4, #2,or BB. #4 buck will penetrate 3 or 4 walls, especially if you miss, and there's a large chance of missing with a few pellets if there are 28 pellets to begin with. Not worth it in an apartment with thin walls and children everywhere.
With 00B , even with reduced velocities , the .33 pellets still have plenty of energy , and the patterning is the limiting factor . With 4B , with " barely buckshot " .24 pellets , but lots of them , the hit density will remain adequate even farther after the per pellet energy becomes marginal . As to the above concerns about apartment wall penetration , there is good news and bad news . Good news - If you hit the felons with all the pellets , 4B generally, and the low recoil in particular are unlikely to exit . The bad news - You have to make really, really sure not to miss .
#4 Sounds perfect for me. From my bedroom doorway to my front door is 5 paces. Beyond that, is my neighbor's door. Overpenetration is a serious concern of mine, and this gave some good guidance. Thanks, Paul, and rest in peace.
Thank you Paul. Once again , you manage to make an apparently mind numbing topic into a nail biter. And also, thanks for that Thanksgiving presentation. I was able to watch the entire presentation. It saddens me that Rome has decayed to such a degree that you had to remove it. I look forward to next week with great anticipation.
I always enjoy not only Paul's ability to express his opinions (knowledge) but his straight forward, objective approach to shooting in general. Great video
We have fresh from the grocer's pig ears to represent skin then a couple sticks of butter underneath for fat followed by a large boneless ham to simulate a large muscular pectoral muscle, pork ribs, a bag of oranges lung tissue, more pork ribs and butter on the back, no t-shirt this time, and the whole thing backed up by our new and improved high tech fleece bullet stop.
Great video. I think one or two rounds pulverizing a bad guys lungs should stop most sumos and avoid hurting loved ones in adjacent rooms. So, while it’s not right for all instances, in certain short range home defense situations where over penetration is an issue, I think any of these would do the job. Keep up the good work, I learn a lot each time I tune in.
@Kjs I was joking. Just saying that I "haven't learned my lesson" and I "fall for it" every time. Hence, I end up watching every video he's ever made..
Someone else said it on another video but Paul has the best gun content on the internet. If you really want to know things there just isn't anyone better. I like some of the other guys too. Every now and then some gun porn is fun. The quick edits and the dubstep music and the drone shots are cool to watch. But if you want real information about the way guns and ammunition preform I'll take Paul every day if the week and twice on Sunday.
As someone who has a Mossberg 500 as his main home defense gun, using Remington Green and Yellow Box, 2 3/4 inch #1 buckshot (kinda the in-between load between 000 and #4 buck).....thank you, Paul. I think I'll steer clear of the low recoil loads.
I just obtained some Sellier & Bellot #4 buck, with 21 pellets per shell, so I guess it is a reduced recoil ammo. Sounds like it would be good for a home-defense scenario where over-penetration is a big concern (like in my small apartment).
If others would find it useful, I'd be interested to see a comparison between Hornady's 160gr FTX Leverevolution in calibre 30-30 and more traditional 30-30 ammo. Specifically as it relates to hunting effectiveness on deer and potentially larger game animals such as moose, elk, bear, etc at distances up to 100-200 yards. I have read on forums that hunters have found the round ineffectually 'breaks up' in the animal if fired at closer distances under 50 yards and wondered if there was any truth to that. Thanks and greatly appreciate all your videos and the effort you and your crew put into them.
Perhaps you can buy all the rounds you mention, along with the goodies that create a good representation of Paul's "Meat Targets," test them and get back to us with the results. I rather doubt that Paul would be willing to incur the costs of doing as you ask/desire for one persons curiosity. Just sayin'.
Elk require a PMC Starfire Eldorado 150 grain Talon Ammo. . They bore a 3” hole through any animal. Regular white tail drop better with 125 grain hollow points.
Thanks for your videos, nice coat., Couldn't wait for Santa huh ? I've been with you since you had 5k subs.I hope we have many more years of shooting together. Merry Christmas Paul and Nancy, Oregon

@@TheRoadhammer379 He might if they release the logistics about the incident. While I doubt the likes documenting such things, it'd probably be a great opportunity to educate some viewers on mistakes and misconceptions.
Yes Meat Target Testing the Low Recoil Ammo vs regular! Pauls ability to describe the meat target and ammo in 15 seconds or less at 10:48 is priceless! How the heck did he memorize all that and not stumble when saying it? Paul Harrell majic I believe 😊🤠
I'm actually thinking of getting the low recoil for my home defense shotgun. I have neighbours on the same floor as me in my apartment and while not as affective as full power loads the chances of shooting my neighbours is decreased I think. I'd like to see a video on penetration characteristics of low recoil 4 buck on dry wall, cabinets, doors, tile etc etc. Would you be willing to do that Paul?
My thoughts about low recoil #4 buck shot align with yours. I see it as a good load if your worried about over penetration. Apartment living has it's own peculiar issues compared with single family dwellings, however care must still be exercised there also.
@@MCamp-ll9mf I can understand how you feel that way. We each have our own limits we are willing to go to. I can't condemn your limits because faced with the ultimate decision I can't honestly say how much I would care either. Hopefully we will never have to find out. Until then, we must stay ready and resolute.
I think you score a new record for number of words for seconds during the introduction of the first meat target. 😜 Always a pleasure to see your very interesting video!!!!
I love it when I see that Mr. Harrell has a new "shotgun" video!!! I would have NEVER purchased low-recoil #4 buckshot anyway, but this just shows that there are NO advantages to it, either. As always, great info. Thx, Paul.
The advantage of larger buckshot is that it is more effective as the range opens up. Unless there is a really good reason behind taking a smaller buckshot, why handicap yourself?
I use #4 buck when I'm coyote hunting, expecting close shots. I just meant that I would never buy the low-recoil variation of it. I've got 8 different choke restriction sizes, and have found that the #4 buck patterns best from my .690 choke. However, the 00 buck likes the .705 choke the best. I love to pattern shotgun ammo of all kinds.... I've also discovered that the Federal Flight Control 00 buck is hard to beat, when using an Improved Cylinder(.720). This is because it provides just enough restriction to keep the wad tight, as it leaves the muzzle, but not so much restriction that it prematurely strips the wad from the shot(which would defeat the design of the ammo).
My house is very close to my neighbors houses so I use standard 27 pellet #4 buck to lower the chance of over penetration. I have 9 and 12 pellet 00 buck in a harness but would try to resolve with #4 buck first. Bought Federal #4 buck only once because the buffering powder was leaking out of the shells. Thanks for covering this!
I'm by no means an expert and wanted a home defense round so I tried out 00 Buck 3" at a shooting spot we use and also tried out Winchester PDX1 Defender rounds which are lower velocity slugs with 3 pellets. I'm a novice, own a pump security style 12ga shotgun with the shorter 18.5" barrel and the lessened recoil using the Defender compared to the bigger kick 00 Buck made me choose the Defender PDX1 slugs. I also have neighbors to think about and judging by the damage caused at the range with the slugs I definitely prefer those and feel comfortable shooting them. Utilizing them for home defense would be good for me. Videos like yours is very VERY helpful in making these decisions and actually trying different ammunition helped me decide as well. I feel safer and I know they will do the job in close proximity to a suspect or two in my home. Supposedly, Winchester designed them for a 10-15 foot distance to have a 4 inch pattern and trying them they did just that, very pleased and confident with these. If I didn't own anything worth stealing I would just leave the house and call the police and wait but I do own "sh**" so I will defend.
Another awesome video Paul. I was excited for this after you mentioned it in the other video. Your final words in this video saved me a good chunk of money as I was minutes from purchasing some tool food online thinking it would have performed much better.
Paul Harrell, I am SO thankful for the videos you make! Truly, they are, for me anyway, both entertaining and informative and I enjoy every second. I know they probably take quite a bit of time and effort to complete, but know I appreciate your unbiased and educational take on the many subjects you cover regarding firearms! Thank you!
I have always wanted to try out #1 buck loads as on paper they offer more power than #4 loads, but more pellets than 00Buck. The problem I had was none of the LGS in my area carried such an uncommon load.
If you read this Mr. Harrell, please consider this as something that could be worth evaluating. I like your analysis on these topics and your thoroughness.

#4 Sounds perfect for me. From my bedroom doorway to my front door is 5 paces. Beyond that, is my neighbor's door. Overpenetration is a serious concern of mine, and this gave some good guidance. Thanks, Paul, and rest in peace.
When Paul Harrell does division math problems. There is no remainders.
Too many comments.
@@stewpidasso288 Nice comment. Now be quiet, Stew!
Proper Grammar/English Please
I think Stew used a sentence fragment. How dreadful.
@@cuttheknot4781 yeah, it ruined a good joke.
I'm very appreciative of the time and effort you put into these informative presentations - thanks!
Simply badass, priceless education. I Hope RUclips isn't still defunding his channel.
Thanks for this. No 4 buck is my home defense choice. Love to see the pattern test at closer ranges, say 5-7 yards like in a house situation.
Be careful people are not in other rooms. #4 buckshot will penetrate through 16 layers of drywall. I use birdshot for in home defense.
@@KTMsoldier1988 unless, I misunderstood, didn’t Paul’s demonstrations showed low recoil #4 will not penetrate through the criminals?
A true legend. I'll miss his Thanksgiving specials. But I'm sure his brother will do a great job, and has been!
I really wish they didn’t mess with your Thanksgiving special it was one of my most favorite videos
I always enjoy not only Paul's ability to express his opinions (knowledge) but his straight forward, objective approach to shooting in general. Great video
Paul Harrell = the GOAT
@Christian true ! (Greatest Of All Time )
Thank you for all the lessons Paul. I feel your videos have helped so many people become more informative. Your the man!
Now I'm expecting a "Sumo Meat Target" comparison for future videos.
Eric Redbear With ox & buffalo ribs.
He actually has done a video with a meat target intended to represent a medium to large sized animal that might attack a human (bear, wolf, etc.).
Paul's videos are click bait and I fall for it every time.👍
@Kjs I was joking.
Did you mean “00”?
Paul. As always I enjoy and learn from your painstaking and thorough videos. Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones. All the best.
I just obtained some Sellier & Bellot #4 buck, with 21 pellets per shell, so I guess it is a reduced recoil ammo. Sounds like it would be good for a home-defense scenario where over-penetration is a big concern (like in my small apartment).
Thank you Paul.
@@user-td1zo3tv9p It never hurts to ask...if you don't ask, the answer is always no.
I'm reminded of something mom once said about squeaky wheels and oil.
I agree, this would be interesting to see.
Elk require a PMC Starfire Eldorado 150 grain Talon Ammo. . They bore a 3” hole through any animal. Regular white tail drop better with 125 grain hollow points.
The most educational gun channel on RUclips.
Last time I was this early the pork chop pectorals were still oinking.
Thanks for your videos, nice coat., Couldn't wait for Santa huh ?
I've been with you since you had 5k subs.I hope we have many more years of shooting together.

@GYPSY KING FURY Indeed, looks like quality to me too.
It would be best if he shot left handed with it.

@@EDSKaR New to Paul.
Excellent quality video. I know it took a lot of time making this video, I can appreciate that.
It would be interesting to see a video on the UPS shooting.
Paul doesn't do presentations on colossal screw ups
@@TheRoadhammer379 He might if they release the logistics about the incident. While I doubt the likes documenting such things, it'd probably be a great opportunity to educate some viewers on mistakes and misconceptions.
@Thystaff Thywill Nice, thanks.
Yes Meat Target Testing the Low Recoil Ammo vs regular! Pauls ability to describe the meat target and ammo in 15 seconds or less at 10:48 is priceless! How the heck did he memorize all that and not stumble when saying it? Paul Harrell majic I believe 😊🤠
useful and interesting as always.
Thank you, Paul. Even as a combat vet, I have learned so much from you. Appreciate you.
I always think the same thing-LIABILITY for neighbors in close proximity (apartment or even a townhome).
My thoughts about low recoil #4 buck shot align with yours. I see it as a good load if your worried about over penetration. Apartment living has it's own peculiar issues compared with single family dwellings, however care must still be exercised there also.
When it comes to protecting my family, I don’t give a damn what’s behind my target. It’s sad to say. But it’s the truth.
@@MCamp-ll9mf what if it IS your family behind the target?
@@MCamp-ll9mf I can understand how you feel that way. We each have our own limits we are willing to go to. I can't condemn your limits because faced with the ultimate decision I can't honestly say how much I would care either. Hopefully we will never have to find out. Until then, we must stay ready and resolute.
I think you score a new record for number of words for seconds during the introduction of the first meat target. 😜
Always a pleasure to see your very interesting video!!!!
@@jamiesloan5902 Yeah, I like the Federal Flitecontrol load too :)
Paul's shoulder is harder than a mountain made of diamond.
Now you're just being kind of silly.
Not to be rude, but #4 Buckshot is a pretty low recoil round to begin with, unless you're shooting it out of a very light shotgun.
That's some slick racking.
Another awesome video Paul. I was excited for this after you mentioned it in the other video. Your final words in this video saved me a good chunk of money as I was minutes from purchasing some tool food online thinking it would have performed much better.
For me reduced sound pressure levels are far more important than reduced recoil.
Thank you!
After watching these videos, I want to engrave “For use with Remington ammunition only” on all my barrels.
Another well done comparison. I always learn something from your videos and get a chuckle ("stalked by a Sumo"). Keep the quality videos coming!!!

Keep it up,Paul.Your tests are well constructed and fair. You're an asset to those who want to be informed.
I agree. I would like to see #1 buckshot tested.
