Winchester 1897s are full fire while you hold the trigger down and pump they fire when the breach locks. Used for rapid fire in WWI. Hence the term trench gun.
MOST all others you pump while holding the trigger pulled, THEN reset for the next shot..
Get the next round ready to fire asap.

I love Paul Harrell videos, I always feel like its worth the time.
Also, side note but I've noticed that other gun channels with less moral compunctions than Paul, that have bordered on shilling previously have started attempting to be more fair-minded, and started instructing rather than preaching or browbeating. Probably just market forces at work but it's a nice thing to see the browbeating stupidity fall to the wayside a little bit.

@@vaclavjebavy5118 Well a good recent example was all the channels that reviewed the Beretta 81 a little bit ago because MidwayUSA sent out handpicked free samples to them. It was common for those types of channels to not say anything about how Midway had sent them for free, or how anyone else had been reporting that they had received much worse condition guns. They'd just review the near-perfect condition gun and only extol it's virtues. Now a lot of them are starting to point out the issues above.
Several of the channels that shilled a lot are still channels I liked, but it's nice to see them be more honest.

@a c An AR or any autoloading rifle is better than shotguns in self defense but a shotgun will get the job done no doubt. But if the home invaders have rifles, I would much rather have a rifle with 31 to 41 rounds than a shotgun with 9 or 11 rounds.

@snoopy dubnation The "way they look in court" bullshit is a complete lie. A Shooting is Legal or A Shooting is Illegal no matter the firearm used. An H&K salesman used his very own AC-556 to defend himself from 3 attackers. He was justifed in the shooting, and he used an AC-556 to get the job done. Thats not your average 556 rifle that's a fucking Mini-14 Machinegun lol

Have you read many of the verdicts and decisions from juries and judges. Most people are morons, and unfortunately, juries and judges are people. Maybe the "the way it looks in court" will eventually not matter thanks to an appeal or two, but how much time and money will it potentially cost you to get there.

  • @swj719
    @swj719 4 года назад +7

    A few comments...
First, I love that you went to a second box of the blue box to try to make sure it wasn't just a bad batch. That's exactly what I'd expect from you, Paul - thoroughness.
Second, while I'm not having a conniption, I do find it unlikely a home defense scenario would involve ranges of 25 yards. Unless you have an impressively long hallway, I just can't picture where a 25 yard shot would a) happen and b) pass muster when the (as Ice-T might say) the 'M-F'ers in the blue uniforms' come by after all the sturm und drang is done. I might ha e liked to have seen performance at five or ten yards, just for a closer-to-expected-real-world view.
Third, having said what I just said, I don't think 25 yards is inappropriate when you consider the folks that might take this info and extrapolate it into hunting. It isn't that I think 25 yards is a bad distance for this video, I just would have liked another set of data.
Fourth, for the 4-shot low/reduced recoil, I wonder if you could lay hands on a "home defense" shotgun. You know one of the ones that don't have a stock, just a pistol grip. I've shot them with traditional shotgun shells, and remember thinking I'd almost rather be the victim of a home invasion than shoot that thing again. I wonder how the 4-shot reduced recoil would feel.
Fifth, and finally, I had to rewind when you said "first" just to make sure I saw what I saw, and laughed louder than my neighbor would probably prefer when I confirmed my initial observation.
Keep up the outstanding work, and if I'm ever in your neighborhood, first couple of rounds for you and the crew are on me.

I retired from a big city police department. I was a member of the “Shotgun Slug Cadre.” Our shotguns were privately purchased, mostly Remington 870LE with 18 inch barrels. We were issued Federal Premium Tactical low recoil 2 3/4 inch 9 pellet and tactical low recoil 2 3/4 inch 1 oz slug. We patterned our buckshot at 5,10,15 and 25 yards. At 15 yards all 9 pellets were in the head (2 3/4 inch spread) with the cup in the neck. At 25 yards I had a 9 pellet 10 inch spread in the body. The advantage of this round is to limit the spread up to 25 yards. The slug was used for longer shots and suspects with body armor when rifles aren’t available.

Great presentation. I found when using 2 3/4" shells of 00buck, Remington patterned the best out of my 870 with a 18" barrel with a full choke. When using 3" magnum shells, Federal patterns really well in both 00 and #4 buckshot. These were all done at 40 yards as I use these loads for deer. A lot of people say buckshot shouldn't be used past 50 yards or even less, but if you pattern your shot using different chokes to keep a tighter pattern, you'd be surprised how well a 3" mag with 15 pellets of 00 drops a full grown deer at 70 yards. I've done it quite a few times and not once have I ever had to track a deer, yet I've tracked deer with a double lung shot and a golf ball size hole out the shoulder from a 12 gauge slug shot at 20 yards. Using the right load for a shotgun and choke that patterns well or tightly at the expected ranges to shoot can yield results. I say do your own tests before reading some so called experts advice on a forum. As how Paul did the pattern tests here, it is the correct way to do it, compare the results! 👍

I complained to my boss about the change, his reply was two words "Pattern it". I did. He was right. Our 8 pellet loads at 20 yards were consistently putting more pellets in the proper zone of the target than our old 9 pellet loads, with significantly less recoil. Ok, I'm convinced.

Great stuff as always. The only thing I would take issue with is the conclusion that reduced recoil ammo doesn't allow you to shoot faster follow ups. I think your background and experience needs to be factored in to the equation. whereas the differences in recoil did not affect your times, I believe that to a more casual or novice shooter it would have a bigger impact on their performance. That said, I know there is no way you can just turn off your years of experience and training, and just became a novice for comparison. Just thought I would point it out.

Living in the suburbs, I need to balance self defense with over penetration and too wide of a pattern in which a pellet would miss. I find the reduced recoil coupled with a flight controlled wad to be the perfect balance. I have spend considerable time shooting my personal defense ammo of choice at various distance through a variety of my shotguns. It all works very well.
On a different topic, I think meat behaves as a non Newtonian fluid and as such slightly lower velocities may behave better. I can't prove it. Would love to see you dig about in this.
