Different goal. FMJ wounds are easier to patch if the round doesn't fragment. When hunting game you don't care about patching the wound. This is the reason triangular bayonets are banned while other are still legal.

JHP in the chamber and FMJ top of the magazine for confidence it will feed. Or fmj in the chamber lest you torch it off by accident I don't want a JHP's shredding my leg. Generally I'll load two JHP's and one FMJ. Stagger the order in the magazine and if I have to let 'em fly there's penetration and devastating wound channels.

What blew me away in my testing of the Xtreme Defenders was that no matter what I put in front of that bullet; sheet metal, rigs, clothing, wood, drywall, and even Level 2 body armor it consistently penetrated all the above and 12"-18" of ballistics gel. Yes, even Level 2 body armor. If ever there were a "magic bullet", this would be as close as we've come.

Paul, it amazes me that these jurisdictions that don't allow hollow-point ammunition are so UNINFORMED. Time and time again I see Full Metal Jacket (FMJ) ammunition go clear through long ballistic gel blocks where hollow-point ammunition does not. Clearly FJM poses the greatest danger to those in the immediate and intermediate area of a shooting incident. It amazes me that these local jurisdictions are more concerned with the life of the perpetrator than they are with the lives of the innocent by-standers.
And thanks for another very interesting and informative article. Peace, love and happiness to you, your family and crew.

I agree, they seem to be a good choice for sure. I carry them in my 380 because they penetrate well, not as much as FMJ would which is a good thing, and they cause more damage than FMJ. They are one of very few 380 loads that stay within 12-18" in gel and do some damage.

Question is can you afford to fire enough of them to know they are reliable in your gun and know where they will hit? That’s the issue with “hyper” ammo. This is why I like HST in boxes of 50 that don’t break the bank.

    • @chrisjones6002

I've shot enough in the couple of guns I carry it in to feel comfortable with my choice. For smaller calibers like 380 and 32 I think its worth the extra money to have the best self defense ammo I think is out there. For my other carry guns, mostly 9mm and a couple 38s I favor Gold Dots but HSTs are a good choice too.

@@kftc1980 I hear what you're saying. But the fact is that they're not THAT much more expensive than really good, bonded hollow points. I've shot a LOT of them (in 380, 9x19, 357 SIG, 40 S&W, 10mm, and 9x25 Dillon), and I've never had a single problem in (obviously) a variety of pistols.

Happy to see this comparison for 9 mm, but would really like to see something similar with mouse guns. The advice you often see with calibers like .32 ACP is to forget about hollow points and stick with FMJ. You can find results with ballistic test gelatin, but it would be nice to see how this works with the meat target. Would the damage with either kind of round be pretty much equivalent, given that you probably won't get much expansion with the hollow point rounds? I use .32 ACP as an example simply because a KelTec P32 is pretty close to invisible as a concealed carry gun.

In my socialistic area, the local commissar(prosecutor) will charge you with some form of homicide even if it is a justified shooting, just for using any projectile other than FMJ. The FBI's opinion of the Over-Penetration Debate is that it doesn't matter. Their statistics show that in shootings (mostly by law enforcement) only about 20% (if memory serves) of rounds fired actually hit the assailant. The rest miss and go past the assailant. So you are FAR more likely to just miss and hit a bystander, than for a bullet to overpenetrate and hit a bystander.
Also, bullets lose nearly all of their energy after passing through a person. So if they did hit a bystander, it wouldn't injure them very much. But if you miss, you hit them with a full powered round. AND again, if you do happen to shoot someone, the likelihood of a round over-penetrating and actually hitting someone, are astronomically low (along with the chances you will ever need to shoot someone at all). So again, it statistically doesn't matter.
So if for some reason you need to shoot a baddie who happens to be in front of an orphanage... maybe just, try not to shoot. Try to get another angle on him, as you would in a cross-fire situation. Otherwise, if you need to shoot someone, then it's automatically assumed that the likelihood of him killing someone if you dont shoot, is WAAAAAAAY higher than the chance that you accidentally shoot a bystander.

As far as I can tell, only the state of New Jersey bans hollow point pistol ammo (which is still OK for use in your home, and under other limited circumstances not applicable to concealed carry). Did I miss a state? And as far as concealed carry goes in NJ, concealed carry is only legal with a New Jersey Permit to Carry a Handgun, which are rarely issued to the general populace, as there must be a demonstrated urgent necessity based on a special danger to an applicant's life (or you've got serious political pull, of course). In other words fuhgeddaboudit (or become one of the Sopranos)! It's almost as bad as the Peoples Republic of Kalifornia. No wonder I moved out decades ago. I hope all 496 of the NJ permit holders issued in 2014 (from a state with 9 million residents) enjoyed this video--I did. However, it might have been more interesting if the 2 cartridges Sig designed just for the P365 (Sig Sauer 365 9mm Luger & 365 Elite Performance 9mm Luger, both 115gr.) had also been used for control purposes.

mrpibb7781 and if you carry a 10mm, their xtreme defender is fast enough to punch through most armor too. Very helpful when considering that mass shooters are very often armored. I'm very interested in 1911 ammo and those Underwood bullets aren't the best feeding wise. They have sharp edges and present a different bullet/ramp angle depending on how the cartridge happens to be turned in the magazine. Not to say that they don't work - they do, just not better than many others.
I've had good results with Golden Sabers, they're very round for HP. Same for Gold Dots and Win T&D.

    @Dang_Near_Fed_Up 5 лет назад +4

Excellent informative video as always, Thanks Paul.
One not so quick note here for anyone who is interested. Always make sure your intended ammo will work in each specific pistol you plan to use it in. Never assume "It worked fine in my other pistol" means it will work in all your pistols. Or any other firearm for that matter.
Case in point: I just bought a Springfield Armory XDs .45 mod 2. For this story the Glock G41 Gen 4 is the Glock in question. I use Walmart's bargain basement Federal "Champion" 320 grain FMJ aluminum case ammo in my Glock, without issue. I expected to use it in my XDs without issue as well, but to my amazement the Federal ammo dropped nearly a foot and a half in 30 feet when fired from the XDs. Yes I said a foot and a half, 18 inches drop in 30 feet. I honestly thought something was broken in the new gun, but the gun is actually fine.
I switched to Fiocchi then fired my 5 test rounds, and hit approximately 2 inches low at 30 feet.
Using Magtech I put 2 of the 5 test rounds fired into the bullseye.
I am still experimenting. Other ammunition brands and types will follow, but I will not bore you all with that. This is a true apples to apples comparison between ammunition, but in two very different guns. All the rounds fired were 230 grain FMJ round nosed ball ammunition, no weight differences, no projectile shape differences, etc. as I said apples to apples. With very startling different results. I am not bad mouthing any manufacturer here, just the opposite, it is entirely the guns that make the difference. My Glock put 7 out of 13 in the bullseye and a 4" grouping at 30 feet with the same Federal ammo as proof of this not being bad ammo.
The point of this story is to underscore that you must always test your actual pistol, with the actual ammunition you intend to use. If you want to know you are good to go, when you have to be, test with your actual exact combination or you may find you have a real problem at the worst possible time.
Any way if you read all that, I wish you well and I hope the story is helpful. Thanks again Paul for all the hard work, it is appreciated.

Hollow points are legal in jersey. It is illegal to carry in jersey unless you know somebody. Out of 1.4 million gun owners in the state, only a thousand have permits. 99% of those people are retired cops, politicians, or judges.

So glad to FINALLY see meat target performance of those Underwood rounds. Have seen about a trillion jello videos but none where we could see something truly useful. Those appeared to do better than some hollow points, which is a surprise to me. Thank you Mr. Harrell.

Thanks Paul, great info as expected from you. This one was especially good to see: It validated test results which used of my own version of your meat target. I used your method to test the Underwood Extreme Defender in both 9x19 and 380 ACP. Based on the success of my tests I have been carrying this ammo for the past year. Your test gives me even more confidence in my choice of carry ammo (that included very good results even when fired from my smallest carry gun, a Ruger LCP). I also tested point of impact in my two usual carry guns and they were pretty much true to my point of aim, as they were with my old Federal HST HP rounds (7 and 15 yard distances). I was very pleased with that. Recoil seems softer with the lighter Underwood rounds even though they have much higher velocities. The meat target tells a more, real world story than ballistic gel. You designed an excellent testing media!!

thanx paul. it all comes down to learning to think for yourself.there's lots of variables that's food for thought .and in the pinch, action always wins over hesitation, whether you shoot a 380 or a 10 mm.or larger.we have to be the judges.you have really made good shooters better.

Not concerned about over penetration, it's largely an over blown concern. Don't believe me, look for a single example of a civilian self defense shooting where the threat was shot, and the projectile passed through the threat, and hit an innocent bystander. You maaaaaaaybe will find one obscure example, maybe. I never have found a single one.

Look at police shootings, plenty of through and throughs. I just watched one with a hand gun, where both shots went through and one ricocheted and ended up in a dorm room, didn't hit anyone. As a civilian I won't get a free get out of jail card. So yes, over penetration can certainly be an issue for some of us.

Granted, expansion is a plus. BUT...In my sleepy little home town, there was a murder. It stands out in my mind because I was around 8 years old and this was big news since it was the first time such a thing had happened in my lifetime. The weapon that dropped one man like a sack of potatoes and put another in the hospital for a couple of weeks? 25 ACP., fired from the typical pocket pistol. I'm NOT saying that should be the cartridge/firearm of choice for personal defense, but those who seem to think a 9mm that doesn't expand isn't serious medicine have there heads in their rectal cavity.
With the recent 9mm fanaticism, the numbers may well have changed. But I recall when the caliber used in the most fatal shootings every year was the 22RF. Keep that in mind, all who think someone shot with a 9mm non-expanding bullet "won't miss a day's work" as someone commented.
