  • In today's video we take a look at a 2007 Chevrolet Express Van or truck with a 4.8l V8 engine. The customer complaint is that it is a no crank no start. They believe it may be a bad starter motor but they wanted us to make sure before we replaced it. Follow along as we go step by step through the diagnostic and troubleshooting procedures to find and fix this problem.

Great explanation of the starter circuit. But for the DIY, wouldn't you recommend starting checking the voltages at starter terminals first. Probable cause says it would be the starter motor or it's connecting wires. Then if it checks out, follow it back to the relay in the fuse box.

BAM! WHAM! take that with all the details needed to understand this particular starting circuit(s).
Though he does not mention the BCM is also in the game, if the power reaches the relay, it means the BCM is talking to the ECM... so, all good... and obviously the issue is on the ECM side.
Within a few seconds into this video, watching this individual for the first time ever, I could feel this is done as needs to be done to help anyone who may not have any information about the circuits.
I am going to look for a video of his that treats the BCM side.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. Liked and Subscribed.
note: this particular setup may not go thru the ECM via BCM...

One note: it would be more thorough to mention the Voltage on each circuit. i.e. is it a 12V, 5V reference, low Reference !?

This is a great video, thanks! I have a similar problem. Thought I was having a starter issue, and I went under to check voltage to the small wire and I didn't see any. I applied voltage to the small wire with the power probe, and I got nothing. I accidentally hit the small and large terminal at the same time and bang it turned over. I guess my point is you can test the starter that way too. The van I am working on has an aftermarket remote start and alarm system which I think may be causing the problem, not really looking forward to that. Next step, check relay and neural safety I guess. This happened out of the blue last week. I can start the van if I go under with a screwdriver and jump the terminals

As others have already said, you're born teacher. That's something you can not learn, either you have that in you or don't. There are real professionals out there but not everyoune has talent for teaching. Paul danner is certainlly one of the best. I don't know if you have his knowledge and experience, but in my opinion you're good in teaching as he is.
I live in Europe in Serbia. Although we have mainly diesels, as Paul have said, theese principles applies to them also.

I had a very similar issue on one of these vans a few years ago, it was actually owned by an electrician and when I opened the hood there was household electrical wiring and wire nuts everywhere and the thing wouldn't crank intermittently!
I had a feeling it was a bad ground so I took my test light and hooked one end to the battery negative and touched the engine block with the other end and had him try and crank it and when it lit up it completely blew his mind!!
He couldn't wrap his mind around how the test light lit up when both ends of it were hooked up to something negative!!
He said they had put like four starter motors in it and three batteries and he had done all sorts of questionable wiring!

Shut it off immediately and it will crank but it skips and jumps and will not start. Eventually it will disengage the starter and you will hear the Bendix. Very strange. New battery. 🤔 When it skips and jumps there is a noticable stain on the engine. Any thoughts?
