  • In this video I take you through a bit of the diagnosing this 2006 Chevy 1500 truck that was towed in with a no start no crank condition. It was a pretty simple one but would have burned me if I just took a big fat guess. That is why we test right :)

    On my 2001 Silverado my original starter went out with no warning at all. Drove it to a job site just fine. When I came out to leave, nothing. Did the starter right there in the parking lot. Be VERY careful of the crank sensor and harness. I damaged mine because I hadn’t done that on this truck before. After doing the starter the truck cranked but wouldn’t start! Had to take the starter back off and rig the CPS harness to work just until I could get home and do the starter for the 3rd time! I will say 18 years of near daily use is pretty impressive for a starter.

    South Main Auto Repair: Thank you sir for taking the time to instruct and demonstrate troubleshooting procedures. This starter vid reminds me of my starter wrestling match on a military vehicle years ago(1960's) and the "never assume" lesson I learned. The starter must have weighed close to 60 lbs or more for a V-12 engine, containing slip clutches set to 850 Ft./Lb of torque, designed to spin out(so as not to bend connecting rods) if excessive fuel was on top of a piston. I did NOT check starter or solenoid with batteries BEFORE installation. Once installed and wired-I engaged the starter switch-nothing? All checks were conclusive-the new starter solenoid was defective!! The entire starter had to be replaced(again) as a complete unit down in the Eng. compartment at over 100 deg. F. I still check new starters on a bench or vise BEFORE installation... changing gears...I was invited to climb into the cab of a large city Fire Truck. As an emergency vehicle, the FD could not afford a solenoid failure so the engine had a MANUAL starter switch which was actuated by a rod or shaft that penetrated the floorboard adjacent to the driver much as a gear shift.

  • @wysetech2000
    @wysetech2000 9 лет назад +7

    I probably would have checked for power at the starter solenoid myself after checking at the fuse but there is nothing wrong doing it the way you did it. My 2004 Silverado did the same thing since the day it was new. Occasionally it would not crank but no indications of low battery. Sitting in the cab and trying over and over again would usually result in a start. Replaced Starter relay. No help. Thought about the switch but decided against that. finally put a jumper with a lamp on the starter terminal and ground and waited for it to fail again, which didn't take long found good power all the way to the starter. Replaced the starter. No problems since then, been over a year now.
    I had this to the dealership four times during warranty and they were no help at all.
    Great video as always! Thank you!

      I took my 81 Chevy with a 350 diesel (under warranty) to the dealer years ago. The starter would crank and engine would start. But, the starter would not disengage. They said it wasn't happening, and tried to tell me one of the batteries had a weak cell. It only happened occasionally and often when my wife was driving it. Long story short they refused to pull the starter. When I installed new batteries before the next winter it happened more often. So I parked across their bays only entrance and sat in the waiting room. They agreed to pulled the starter and it had a cracked housing. Dealers often don't want to take the time to diagnosis a problem. I get that they have to weigh what they are told by clients, but they should listen to them and consider the possibilities. The fact that they had rewritten the description of the problem I left when I used the night drop was especially irritating. Another dealer changed the fuel injector pump and left a wire dangling because the new pump didn't need it. It took out the fusible link to the glow plug circuit and he told me it had nothing to do with what they worked on. I was a radio repairman in Vietnam and an industrial technician at the time. I am familiar with automotive electrical circuits. I asked him to explain why they left the bare connector and he continued to BS me.

Cleaning terminals, knowing how to test circuits, properly torquing fasteners are just some indicators this guy understands how things work and what it takes to repair it properly. Remember just because we drive away doesn't mean the job was performed correctly. Details are important and unseen by most. Good to see a nice change.

    You are a true pro. Anyone can throw parts at a problem, which is never a good idea, especially when dealing with intermittent ones. My 04 Yukon is driving me crazy right now with an extremely intermittent no crank. Can't get it to happen long enough for a good diagnosis. Already replaced switch, which is a high failure item, and relay. Getting ready to throw a starter out of desperation.

  • @Steelplayer59

    Had that same problem with my 2005 Trailblazer. Did the exact same thing. Tested the relay, fuses, & start wire to solenoid. Same as you everything checked out. I really like the troubleshooting in these vids. I spent most of my time in the IT world during troubleshooting. Making assumptions can lead to delays and repeat work. I had 2005 GMC 2500HD with Duramax and the dual factory batteries lasted 9 years. I think the heat wrap they put on them really helps extend the life. I put in new batteries in June 2014 and then traded it in a new RAM 2500HD with Cummins in July. Oh well.

    then got more frequent so I got a much better battery , the first was from Walmart. And it happened two days later so I got rid of my subwoofer because I thought this was the problem. some days it'll start other days a no go. same exact symptoms.i thought it was only on days. that it was very hot. that's when I first noticed. and my cars black. for a while if it didn't start and I jumped it with another battery it would fire up. I'm at 110000 miles. but I watched every second of this video and I learned so much. I'm convinced my starter is the culprit. unfortunately I'll need to save the few hundred $$ to have a shop fix it since I only have basic tools.but thank you so much. Good diagnosis. Myself from experience, I would of went right to the starter, just for the fact that it seems almost everyone I have done like this, where it won't crank in the crank position and the lights go out in the dash, I always go tap on the starter/solenoid first then test for everything else. Any time I have done a switch is when its messed up and has to be broken in order to turn it so it can be released. But at least now I have seen another techs way of doing it and shared experience. Thanks.

    This was well done and helpful, and that's why among all the videos about this issue I am posting the following comment:
    If it is the battery as it was with mine, you have to actually INSTALL the new/good battery, NOT just jump it - that will not work. After viewing a dozen videos and forums that's what I finally found out from my shop. I believe them because any other problem with the system would have cost more to fix. Plus it did work.
    The explanation from the shop is that it has to do with the computers and complexity of the charging system, and the need for direct cable connections. Jumper cables do not provide the necessary power feed.

The ignition switch would be cheaper than the starter so in the unwritten law of mechanics 101 of throwing the kitchen sink at it till you find the problem,you would always start out with the least expencive parts,then work your way up to the big $$ items. As follows. Car wont start. Check fuses. Check relay,wiggle wires,check for corrosion of all wires ( naturally) then take a hammer and wack the starter .If it starts then you drive it to the auto parts place to see if they have a starter. Then you shut car off ( by accident) find out they dont have it at that store but the one across town has it. Go out to start car,no start. Hammer method no longer works. Call everyone you know,no answer.End up laying on parking lot in the rain to change starter,short out fuse by forgetting to disconnect battery. Finish in the dark only to find out battery is now dead,get jump start. Wave goodbye to all your helper friends that finally showed after you finished. Jump in car pull headlight switch only to find out the headlights and dashlights no longer work,its dark,the store is closed and no one is around. Oh and did I mention your cell phone battery died just as you started dialing a friend. Yup,one of THOSE kinda days.

    Very very nice and informative video. I like how you really took the time to diagnose the real problem before just throwing parts at it, too many guys do that waste so much time and money, I had a similar issue on my 2001, however, the positive cable on the starter was loose by about 1/16th of an inch, which aint much, but enough to not allow the truck to start!

    As a mechanic who gets paid to fix things, I can see the advantage of replacing the starter as a single unit. For the home mechanic, does it make sense to replace just the solenoid? I suspect the new starters come from China and I don't like Chinese parts. Often the new aftermarket parts have a much shorter life than the remanufactured parts from a few years ago (before China). I know when the voltage gauge on the dash was all over the place many years ago, I took the alternator apart and replaced a few parts (regulator) and it still works perfectly fine.

    You just solved my problem. I was at Lowes about an hour ago trying to start my little 2001 S10 for around 20 minutes. I don't have many tools anymore ( long story) so I go the "change parts til you find it route if it don't break the bank first. I have a metal bar in my neck now and just can't crank my neck around anymore so I'll let my guy replace the starter and solenoid for me. Honest mechanics are hard to find and I found a GREAT guy like yourself. Long story shorter, you have a new subscriber ! Thank You for helping so many of us !! In this specific case Im wondering if it was possible that the no crank was due to the weak battery. We never saw a test of the old starter with a new battery (or bench test of the old starter with bench power supply) and Id be curious to know that result.
    Thanks

    That's a really clean truck for a 2006, the headlights aren't all fade it out paint looks good. I bet that guy takes pretty good care of his vehicles or they're not driven much. I always loved the headlights in that particular truck you pull out the pin on the top and out pops the headlight. When I went to the new design in 2007 that made it a royal pain in the butt.

    • @gwils7879
      @gwils7879 8 лет назад +2

      +jeffscomp Yeah, you want to avoid the hammer bit. Starters have magnets in them, and if it isn't the starter itself, you'll crack them up and destroy the starter. Best to tap it with a piece of wood or a small deadblow hammer or something, not too hard.

    • @frankenstrat25
      @frankenstrat25 8 лет назад +6

      you can hit a starter pretty hard before you break it, trust me, a dead blow or a piece of wood sometimes doesnt work, for example on my truck the starter locked up at work, went under there with my baby hammer and tappity tapped and nothing, it finally cranked over when i gave her the shit. didnt crack my case or anything. if you have any decent knowledge of vehicles you should test everything before you condemn the starter with a hammer. i always carry a test light with me. the joys of being a paranoid mechanic lol

    Your video is the best that I've seen. Too bad I didn't see it until today because last night I attempted changing out the starter. It's already been diagnosed as the starter. I wasn't able to get it out away from the bell housing. Your video is the only one I've seen working through the wheel well to get the dust cover and cables off the starter. I can probably remove the wheel to give me more space since I don't have a lift.

    I'm working on my son-in-laws 01 S10 4.3L Automatic. The truck was over heating. I had to replace the intake manifold gaskets. Of course you know what all that involves. After replacing the gaskets and put everything back together, the truck will not turn over, it was running before. All we hear is a click under the dash when the key is turned. I've checked the battery, its 12.4 volts. I pulled the starter and had it checked. It was good. Although the connector on the PPL wire broke, I replaced it. I used an OHM meter and checked the grounds and they checked out good. So did all the fuses. The only other things i have not checked is the P/N safety switch and the IGN switch. Good video, Iv'e got to check out your other videos, so I can figure this out

  • @upallnight888
    @upallnight888 9 лет назад +8

    Should had tested the starter for the viewers to show whether it was the solenoid or the starter motor itself that crapped out.
    Sometime the starter motor have a dead spot on the communtator, that's why people from AAA will go and bang on the starter if they come upon a no start no crank situation and the battery check out good.

    • @petrocksgarage
      @petrocksgarage 9 лет назад +3

      +Upallnight He did show that to the viewers. He just didn't explain it. The starter solenoid didn't do anything during crank, and he verified that the solenoid was getting (some) power with his 'scope on a rope'. So the solenoid was bad which means the starter as an assembly was bad.

    • @upallnight888
      @upallnight888 9 лет назад

      Eric just showed that there was power to the solenoid, but the starter wasn't turning over. When Eric had the starter out he could had applied power to the starter motor to show that the motor still run and that it was the solenoid that was bad, or if the motor didn't run it was the motor, that would have provided definitive proof as to which components had failed.

    • @petrocksgarage
      @petrocksgarage 9 лет назад +3

      +Upallnight, no that wouldn't really be definitive proof. The starter motor would be free-turning. To truly test a starter motor it needs to be under load (e.g. attached to the engine/fly wheel). Either way, why bother with the extra testing? He proved that the solenoid was bad in the video and the motor & solenoid come as a unit. So if you replace one you replace both. Its a waste of his time to do additional testing. He's got a shop to run, so time is money. Also, actual definitive proof on if the starter motor was bad could be had by doing a voltage reading across the starter motor during cranking and one across the battery during cranking. In a no-crank-no-start scenario If the voltage readings are the same, but not low, the motor is bad. If the voltage readings are the same but low then the battery is bad or needs charging. If the voltage reading at the starter is lower by a couple volts then there is a problem in the cables/wiring. It's really that simple.

    • @upallnight888
      @upallnight888 9 лет назад

      +Pet Rock's Garage Eric is making these videos as info video for people who are not mechanics. If Eric was concern with time as money, he wouldn't be making these video and concentrating on operating his shop. Although a starter/solenoid assembly is normally what is sold as a complete unit, a solenoid is also sold separately in the event that it is the solenoid that is bad and the starter motor is still good. The solenoid is normally 1/3 the cost of a complete starter solenoid unit. It only takes about 10 minutes to swap out a solenoid.

    Sometimes if you tap the starter body with a hammer it will start advising you of a bad starter. I also clip a alligator clip to the switch signal on the solenoid and touch to 12 volts. If it spins its good if it doesn't its bad. I usually go after the starter first as it is the easiest to diagnose for me. I gotta say I love those aftermarket small starters. Easy to change out and not hugging the exhaust pipe.
