Thank you for this video. I was mis-diagnosing mine till I saw this video. This video saved me a lot of time and money. I thought it was my BCM and would have to be taken to a mechanic. Then I ran across your video and I went to work immediately on my truck. I found it was on the negative side that I was losing power. Thank you my truck is fixed..

I've had my truck, 2017 GMC Sierra in and out of the "CERTIFIED" Service department three times and they said they couldn't duplicate this issue. I SAY BULLSHIT. I find it very hard to believe that a whole warehouse full of techs. doesn't know anything about this issue with the battery cables.
Thanks for sharing your video it has saved me not only money but loss of income being self employed and has overall taken away the fear and weight off my shoulders of not being able service my customers at peak season!

I had nothing at all when turning the key on. But you gave me a good idea. I took my boosting cable and I went from the neg pole to the frame..... every light came back to life and it started, so the problem was with my neg cable. However , I've learned from your video so this is additional knowledge... !!
I had my windshield replaced few days ago. They unplug the neg cable but it has been badly tied back.... As this cable was beginning to be corroded, I'll buy a new one, just to be safer...........
    Thanks for your video............

Another part to look at closly is that 150 amp main fuse. Check it for corrosion an replace it if you see copper dust inside the holder. Some of the symptoms are door locks going up and down on their own an stalling. A feww bucks and my truck ran like new. the ends were rusted off of the fuse.

I saw a post on Strong Towns about the lawsuit regarding parking. I work as a public planner in another state and I see the same issues here, though not to the same extent. The result is that the only people who can afford to develop are the big guys with deep pockets while the little guys are always priced out. I wish you the best of luck, I'm rooting for you and I'll be following closely!

I just had this problem and my fix will be buying cut to length welding cable and lugs at my local welding supply. It's tough, heat resistant and high ampacity. I've done many cables that way for decades. Dielectric grease inside the lug before crimping excludes moisture.

A failing connection where the cables are crimped to the positive clamp causes high resistance. Any resistance will result in voltage drop, and in this high-current cable will cause it to heat up and reduce the power throughput. It looks like the cable clamp is making good contact with the positive battery post, but not with the red cables.
It would have been better to bridge the bad connection with something passive, like a jumper cable, but the "booster" test is better than nothing.

I got a 2007 2500hd Z71 6L for 2200$ and it had the dash lights come on but no start. I purchased the truck anyways and towed it to my house. The guy who had it had it stored all winter then when it didn't start he replaced the battery but still nothing, no dome lights, head lights or cranking. I noticed it had no indicator line under what gear it was in. I ran a wire to the starter and positive fuse and it was cranking but no start. Then I thought about that onstar system that was in it. I Pulled fuse 47 or 48.. (I forget) and put it back in and just like that it started.

Just a question my friend .I have a 2009 Chevy Silverado and I was driving one day and turned on the blinker and all my gauges were fluctuating and the truck was losing power and lights were coming on and off .Drove it for another 10 miles and turned on blinker again and it ran normal .My mechanic looked at all the ground connections and said they were in good shape but one was extremely dirty and dusty. The truck sometimes before this incident would act the same way as the one that you were working on .Could this be the issue? Just wondering. Love the vid just subscribed!🙂

High resistance ( corrosion ) on the positive side , causing the heat in the cable and connection . The key was on during the test . ANY exposed copper will corrode and disintegrate over time . Great use of the thermal camera .

So you see, there is no exposed copper, unless you freak out and dip the cable in some kind of acid bath to remove the green, which is harmless, and forms after many years of exposure to the elements, ex. road salt.

Hi Oz Mechanics, I hope you are well. Can you confirm if the instrument panel was lighting up with the key in the "crank" position? I'm having a similar problem with my dad's 08 V6. When I turn the key to the "on" position, all gauges/ gauge lights in the instrument cluster activate. When I turn the key all the way forward to the "start" position, all gauge/ gauge lights in the instrument cluster go blank. That includes the "anti theft/security" light. At that point the starter/solenoid does nothing and I get no power to the solenoid. Please let me know if this sounds the same as truck in your video? Thanks.

I turn the key and it wont turn, click or anything, the cluster lights and needles kind of move a little bit but thats it. I just keep trying to turn the key a few times and it varies, but it will turn on normally after a few tries. After that the truck runs and drives great, it will just do this at least once or thwice a week. its weird and I cant find a fix. I`ve changed the ignition switch and key present sensor because i thought it was something there but still cant find the problem. If that’s bad, you’re gonna read a good reading on one and a bad on the other. ( a slight voltage drop) Shake all 3 of those + cables, it will probably have a strange reading again but on the other cable. I couldn’t wait for the actual OEM part. So get to harbor freight and buy 2’ of cable with the ring connectors. Tape off the old cable really good till you can get OEM. Also check your main relays, flip them around.
