  • Time for another fun diag on the infamous Staten Island!
    This time our patient is a 2007 Chevy Express van that has trouble starting. Sometimes it cranks, sometimes it stalls...
    Enjoy!
    Ivan

    When your spending someone else's money you have to have complete verification of the fault. Plus you have a reputation to uphold and awesome videos to make so we can learn. Nice one Ivan.

    Another thing with these Express/Savannas especially if you find it blowing the security fuse (no crank/start + security light on) is a wiring harness that runs under the drivers feet. I've had two work vans that had that harness rubbed through eventually intermittantly shorting out as your feet put pressure on the carpet while driving.
    The good thing about it is, pop a fuse in to start the truck, pull the fuse, and your good to go until you can pull the carpet.
    I think they finally moved the harness after 2014, but I've got to check a 2017 I have right now. The stud has definately been moved that is used to secure the harness as it used to be near the accelerator pedal where your heel rests.

    As an ex staten islander, I like to check the background in your videos to figure out your location. Lots of clues in this one.

    excellent video Ivan wonder why ALLDATA and motologic would give you an illustration of a transversely mounted engine which the car did not have. That could mess some people up also you want to attenuate the primary signals on this model because you were on true primary with a flyback voltage that can go north of 200 volts thanks again Ivan

    Have a 2006 Chevy express , had a different problem with ignition switch , was replaced twice . They apparently changed to a cheaper switch in this time frame .

      I used to be, until last year when I misdiagnosed my car. I thought my Optispark distributor went bad, only to realize that my fuel pump was failing. Don't be a parts swapper!

    There was a recall on the keys on GM products, Both my Chevy Impala and GMC pickup had the keys modified to stop problems, Maybe the key wore out the ignition switch contacts due to the recall not being done to the keys.

    the owner/previous one likely had a huge lump of junk "hanging" on the key/keyring, causing accelerated wear, on older ones it caused non turning cylinders, newer ones it kills the stupendous anti-theft system

    You should tear into it and see if years of arcing everytime you crank it burnt a divot on the contact surface. It was the issue with my Honda Accord. I just filled it with a solder.

    I really like GM, but their lock cylinders seem pretty crappy, and I don't like their BCM, either (at least in the F body platform).
    I had to do the VATS bypass on my old Camaro and on my Trans Am. Apparently the two wires that read the resistance in the key pellet move with the cylinder whenever you move the key. After so many years of this, one of the wires gets weak and breaks off, the security light blinks, and the car will not start! Now this Chevy Express doesn't even have the key pellet and still the ignition cylinder has issues, that should say something.
    BCM: Apparently there was some issue with the BCM (at least in Fbody cars, like in my Trans Am), where there is a cold solder joint. Moving around causes a disconnect, which will turn off power to the radio and the windows. Then power will randomly come back. I've yet to pull my BCM and re-solder it, but it is VERY annoying to deal with.

      Glycerin - I'm watching these videos trying to figure out my no crank situation and when you mention BCM is that Body Control Module? The other thing you mention about the radio cutting out. That happened a few times prior to the no start that I'm in now. I think I need a new ignition switch. Where is the Body Control Module located? Thanks...

    My 04 express died Friday in park and would not start after that. No crank. All lights came on. Fuel pump primes. No power to the starter. No power to the appropriate fuses with the key on. Just nothing. I changed ignition switch, run crank relay and even a good used neutral safety switch.. Nothing. Jumped it over with a screwdriver to get home. Now I have a push button. Turn the key all the way to crank and push the button. Let off when it fires up. Hasn't failed me yet.

    I've got a 01 f150 v6 and the theft stays on (not blinking) all the time. Bet you or Keith have seen this before. I've been driving it for years like that with no issues. Seems like I read somewhere where the instrument panel is to blame. Any ideas or history of this???

    Ivan, when you showed the wiring diagram and you referenced the number 3 on "the fat yellow wire" what is that number referencing? Is that the wire thickness measured in mm?

    • @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics
      @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics  7 лет назад +2

      Great question, Paul! You made me look that one up. It's the cross-sectional area of the conductor in the wire in square millimeters. So a "3" would mean 3 sq.mm, which has a diameter of about 2mm and is 12-gauge wire. This is a handy reference:

      @paulcarroll750 7 лет назад

      motoYam82 Thanks Ivan. I guess we both learned something. It seems it would be more useful if they used awg scale. Like 10awg or 12awg. It would help you find the wire easier in the loom.

    Doensn't Keith gets mad at you when he is already on car 5 and you still working on the first car (I assume)? ;-)
    Is it correct hat the car has "just" 33.867 miles on the clock and is from 2007?
    What do you think caused that switch to fail? Heavy weight from a lot of keys on the chain or maybe "overcranking"?

      GM quality is my guess.
      My wife has about 4 lbs. hanging from the ORIGINAL ignition switch on our '86 Grand Marquis with 240k on the clock. Used to be a time when you could abuse all vehicles like that ... but not anymore.

      GM ignition cylinders are junk. Coming from someone who used to own a Camaro and now owns a Trans Am, I had to do the VATS bypass on both because one of the wires that reads the resistance in the key pellet broke. When they were making these cars in the 90s, the tech in the cylinders was still from the 70s.

    oi
    shoild of just installed a push strat for like some bucks
    then it will start anyways and get the volts it needs to read and start and no key just in the on pos and push it and it will start i think HAHAHAHAHA
    even know these vans have easy start after turning the key on and/off million times it eats the locks and then stuff happens and things start going places and then breaks
    so if you have a easy start just put in a push start because if the push botton dies just spend like 10 bucks on a new one HAHAHAHA
    THE END
