- In today's video I will be showing how I've just replaced the drain pump and door seal on my 10 year old Bosch integrated dishwasher.
With the dishwasher so old, I gave a lot of thought to whether it was actually worth fixing, but I'm SO pleased I did, because not only was it very enjoyable, but I believe I'll now get at least another few years out of a machine that will cost £500 to £1000 to replace - and all that for £77 - an approximate £130 saving on if I had got an engineer out. An oldie, but a goodie. I was able to sort out the drain pump not working by getting in under the dishwasher the way you showed. Hair and bits of steel wool accumulated from 10 years of washing had wound around the impaler, which I was able to unwind out. Your pictures are so clear. Thank you for posting!

Another good practical video Charlie. Like you I have done numerous fixes to my Bosch Dishwasher over the years, and my kitchen fitter didn’t fit the aluminium panel and botched the door panel fitting with standard wood screws. Nothing like completing a full dishwasher overhaul. You realise how much daily hammer these appliances get. 👍🏼

In a world where systems are key and we have so few in our family lives, I often think that dishwashers are the one system that we have in place that we couldn't do without. We've been seriously struggling without it these last couple of weeks, and just yesterday I had to order a new mesh filter, because the old one had split, which probably didn't help the pump much!

Excellent video thanks. I recently had an issue with the drain pump on my tumble dryer, instead of having the confidence to tackle the job myself I paid someone to do it and they arrived with a new drain pump, unplugged the old one with one small connector at the back and plugged in the new one, all done. I could’ve saved myself £40 in labour if I’d done it myself.

Thanks for the video. You helped me identify what the plastic panel for the feet was all about. Very confusing design overall. Mine isn’t Bosch either, just a generic design from 2012, though has a nice plastic panel underneath for easier access.

Brilliant video! I knew my pump was buggered but as you said, there are different versions with different accesses. I clocked the tabs on the bottom panel and assumed, but didn't want to break anything, took me a while to find your video!

There's never a perfect solution. Yes during manufacture but not during operation and the lithium is also recyclable.
My dishwasher is the same and it’s around 8 years old.

D'you know what, Ray, we've really struggled without it the last few weeks, but I didn't want to say anything for fear of what people might think. I lived for a few years in my late 20s without one. They're a crucial bit of kit in my opinion but I'm guessing you find it quite therapeutic, satisfying....?

Thanks Graham. Yes I see that. I should probably have put it on but it would have lowered the dishwasher a few mm as it was bang in the way of the mounting brackets.
One thing I do is to run our dishwasher empty on the maximum temperature about once a month. Helps flush out any gunk before it has a chance to cause a problem. BTW, love the channel Charlie, almost at that magic 200K subscribers!
That is such a good idea Matthew, and it might clear out that gunk you might have seen in that white plastic pipe mechanism you might have seen on the side. Thanks, I really appreciate that - yes should be there in a week or so 👍

Thanks John. Yes, so many manufacturers have very similar components. I recently had a problem with the float valve not draining the machine - it was like it was sticking. So out it came into its side again and I bought a new float from Bosch, which came with a small micro switch. When I took the old one out you could see a slight burn on one of the switch wires. With the new one in, problem solved - just in case you encounter something similar.

I think your kitchen fitter let you down with the installation of the dishwasher and was probably flummoxed by the granite top. He may not have actually experienced how hot these dishwashers get and the steam impingement under the worktop. My kitchen fitter left the standard 600 mm space for me to install my old integrated dishwasher - except when I went to fit it and I measured it was 5 mm smaller than the dishwasher😳 Too late everything was in (including worktops hob scribed end panels et al and would have been a nightmare to rejig it all. Ending up taking one unit out, taking it apart and trimming 8mm of all the cross members and horizontal top and bottom pieces with the tracksaw and then reassembling - you cannot see the join..😂
I always fit my dishwashers with a slight gap (say 5mm) below the worktop (to allow some
air circulation) and just set the integrated door at the required height to align with the base unit run.
Your old pump failed because the shaft seal failed and allowed ‘process water and detritus’ into the driving end.
I am curious why you did not buy the door seal from Bosch and the pump from the other internet seller - saving yourself 25%? 🤔
Anyhoo good call on doing the repair if it survives another 2-3 years you are well ahead of the game.👍

Well, that was educational. Bosch is touted as being a high end appliance but it seems they use the same cheap plastic parts as lower end products. You make repairing the unit look so damn easy; Bosch should be paying you because you make their product look better than it is. Really enjoyed the video, thank you.

when i did my first kitchen, i was with someone who's been doing it 20+ years. The integrated dishwasher came with some foil tape which he said to always fit to the underside of any dishwasher worktop

Been having drainage issues with my Indesit dishwasher, just typical mines does not have that wee flap bit you can access the pump fan to see if there is anything clogging it, think the pump probs needs replaced
Thanks Charlie. Congrats on dealing with that mess. Looked horrendous. We have a Miele non-integrated machine. Over the last year or so I've noticed stinky wastewater intermittently backs up in it when not in use. Most of the time it doesn't rise high enough to trigger the anti-flood mechanism so it just sits there looking and smelling gross. Doesn't seem to be any discernable pattern to it. Also, it very occasionally seems to leak from somewhere under the rear at the back (when not in use). The machine is in the corner of the kitchen and we know it's leaked when the carpet at the edge of the adjacent living room soaks up the water from under the stud wall. :-) The water leak when it happens doesn't seem smelly so might have two separate issues. Looks like I might have to open our machine up soon.
Thanks Neil. Yes, sounds like you've got a similar problem. You want to get on top of that as it will be making the living areas a bit damp. Make sure you regularly clean the filters, click off that white cover I showed to make sure you've not got any food or other stuff caught in the pump impeller, and maybe give it an empty run and have a closer look at what's going on. Also, it's worth unclipping the waste pipe to make sure you haven't got any blockages in it. Sounds like that could be one of the problems. I stress I'm not a dishwasher expert, but you learn quite a lot immersing yourself in a job like this 👍

Thanks, mate. Not really, although the jeopardy I guess is the £70 odd quid I spent on the spares, if I break it (and the £500-700 I'd have to spend on a new one!) A funny story, I thought my Belling electric oven with gas hob had died, and when the engineer came round I have rarely been more embarrassed when I suddenly remembered the spur switch I had checked was the wrong one and someone had simply switched the oven off !! Luckily he had another thing to fix on it, and I saved some face when I told him I had replaced the door catch and was I being stupid in having had to take half the oven apart to get to it. I had started videoing it but gave up because it was getting ridiculous. He said replacing the door catch was literally the hardest thing to do on the oven and that the only way he had found to do it was to take the hob off and dangle a new catch down the inside on a string and try and grab it from the front.
@@CharlieDIYte Great save there :D I think we all had a moment where we innocently stood in front of the repair guy as he "flicks a switch" and things start to work, almost an equivalent of and IT guy; have you tried turning it of and on again :) but those kind of moments leave us with fun anecdotes if you want to take them as such and are in my opinion very educational for our future selves. How Charlie, how to run a drainage cycle to retest without complete filling on a Bosch similar to the one you worked on please

As a commercial catering engineer, I can say that was a good job well done, sometimes the job would be a load easier if the people that design these machines actually worked on them 🤨
Couldn't agree more, Michael and I edited a bit out in the middle where I was complaining about that! There's a door catch on our Belling oven that I had to take most of the oven apart to replace. I was complaining to an engineer about it a while later and he said it was the hardest component of all to replace and he said he did it by unscrewing the old one, letting it fall into the back of the oven and then dangling the new one on a string down inside the oven and swinging it around to get the screws to locate into it as it dangled there. Ridiculous design!
Me too. I have repaired dozen of household stuff for myself and friends and sometimes you wonder, who designed this.
Other thing I noticed was, that populair trendy expensive brands like Boretti, are made of shitty components and horribly finished inside 11

Thanks for the video Charlie, very informative as usual. I have had to have my integrated dishwasher out recently, as one of the door spring ties failed. Dishwashers do seem to be designed to trap a lot of crap don't they, mine not being a Bosch unit but very similar in concept. As the parts were quite expensive and the machine pretty old, did you consider replacing the machine?
Hi David. Yes, I did a bit of soul searching on this, as the lady on the phone at Bosch said the parts for a 10 year old machine like mine would probably only be available for a few more years. So I thought, I'll buy a new one, but when I found out I'd be looking at somewhere between £500 and £900 I thought I'd chance my luck with £77 of spare parts. I'm pretty confident with the repairs it will last another few years, but we shall see....
There's a mod kit for the back & R/H side of the dishwasher where the leaks occur. It's a known Bosch issue.
Nice job indeed. Too bad the pump lasted only 10 years. I had Miele before... I changed to a newer model even though it was still functioning very well after.... 32 years. Never had any issues, so I put my faith in Miele for almost everything.
Thanks for that, Philip. That, combined with some of the comments in this feed about Bosch make me think I'll look at Miele next time. Had quite a nice Siemens when I lived in London. It's as if they all use the same components though as they look so similar, but I guess your observation is testament to the fact that they aren't.

My drain pump in my Bosch dishwasher is turning (plastic fins are all there) but not draining water . The pathways are seemingly clean. Is it the rubber valve near this pump which is responsible? It seems intact. Thank you.

I make a point of cleaning the filter in the base at least every month and using a bottle of supermarket own dishwasher cleaner. when my pump / heater unit was replaces under warranty it was as clean as a whistle. the other thing to avoid is over or excessive use of rinse aid. With modern 3 part tablets it has very little use and used in excessive quanties it can cause excessive foaming.
That's a good point about the rinse aid, Paul, having just topped mine up this afternoon, although I am using Ecover tablets (less powerful) in a futile effort to keep the bacteria alive in the septic tank...

And as if by magic, 2 weeks after watching this video my 6 yr old Bosch integrated dishwasher is displaying the E15 fault code and pump permanently running, suggesting a leak underneath. Hopefully a faulty float sensor?. But at least I now know how to remove the dishwasher and access the components. Thanks
Yes, go for it. The only hassle is having to wash the dishes whilst you're doing the repair 😉

@@CharlieDIYte When I pulled out the machine and lifted it onto my workbench I caught it on something and some parts fell off. Wasn't sure what they were or where they came from so I ended up replacing the machine. Never mind!!

How to check a drainage cycle on a Bosch similar to the one you worked on
Can't you just put it on a very quick 29 minute wash like I did?
My 30 year old dishwasher is still going strong, she does hate it when I call her that.
All jokes aside, how are your kitchen cabinet paint job holding up. Thinking of doing mine after watching your video during lockdown 2.0
To be honest, that Valspar is pretty hopeless stuff. It's chipped in so many places. My advice would be a) give it a good degrease with sugar soap before you start b) give the units a light sand with some 180 grit sand paper to give them a good key c) use Zinsser BIN to prime them d) then for the top coat, have a trawl through the comments to my vid as there are some great suggestions - like www.tikkurila.co.uk/decorative_paints and Bedec MSP, or you could just get a good durable acrylic eggshell from Johnstones or even an oil based if you want it to be even harder wearing. The pros use a 2 part system, I believe.

Love your video. It gives me hope..... My Bosch Series 100 DW won't drain. There is no debris in filter or impeller as the impeller moves when turned by hand. There is no hum when lifting the float although some residual water sort of spits in the filter well. There is power to the unit, I believe, since the controls light up on the control panel. I"ve ordered a new pump after watching your video. Could the pump be burned out? Do you think replacing the pump will fix the problem? Thoughts?
Let's hope so. It concerned me that there was no hum, but maybe the water spitting is evidence there's power to the pump, and I think you've done the right thing because the price of the pump is considerably less than a call out and if that isn't the problem, at least then you'll know. @@CharlieDIYte Replacing the pump did not work and I was had to purchase a new machine. I did return the part, though, for refund less 25% restocking fee. It was still worth it to me given the cost of a home repair visit. Thanks for this wonderful video.

Great video. The main lesson here is never buy a machine with a plastic tub! Unfortunately they're increasingly common :( Dishes don't seem to come out as dry either although using rinse aid (not expensive combo tablets) helps. Our last 2 kitchen companies threw in a "free" dishwasher with no reduction if we didn't take it. Luckily last time around it was a progress (rebadged Electrolux) and has a steel tub and easy to replace push on side and bottom door seals with no need for any disassembly.
Great observation my friend. I didn't even realise steel tubs were a thing, but I'll be making that a must, for the next machine, whenever that is. Out of interest was that machine of yours free standing or integrated? The integrated seem a lot less easy to disassemble 👍

I believe that was a De Walt. You can pull the black collar down and use it as an offset bit.

We had a problem with our pressure control valve on our geyser so my hubby went and bought a new one at our local build it store and fitted it himself.
Ever since he fitted it, whenever we run the hot tap in the bathroom only, the overflow pipe drips slightly. He has been up in the roof numerous times to see if theres leaking and theres nothing. The drip tray is bone dry, the pipes are all dry. No leaks anywhere. Its only when we run the hot bathroom tap.
And it only drips for less than a minute then stops.
A local DIY guy here said some pressure valves do that but we have never known that to happen before. HELP please.

My machine washes the dishes but doesn't drain. It's not blocked. I was wondering if the same pump circulates the water in the machine as well as drains it? If that is so, what could it be?
It could be the pump has burnt out? Does it kick in if you pull the mushroom shaped cover (float switch) up in the bottom of the machine. If you can hear it but nothing happens then the pump is jammed. Or you could have a leak like I did which might have burnt out the float switch. Or its the control board?

My 13 year old Whirlpool Dishwasher vents steam through a small vent on the front of the door above the handle and controls. If I hadn't been standing in front of it during the dry cycle one day I probably wouldn't have ever noticed. That wouldn't have been possible on your unit since it's designed to be integrated with your cabinets.
Do you no longer have George? He would have made light work of that undraining dishwasher.
And he did, but I stupidly deleted the footage, so this footage with the sponge was from 2 years ago 🙄

Just call who u bought it from and replace it not worth all the hassle lol
Out of warranty. I will be replacing it but it's going strong right now. 👍
