Yeah, it really made an impression on me as a kid how Genesis looked like regular people. Every other band on MTV had big hair and leather pants, but Genesis looked refreshingly normal yet they made this really excellent music.
Double totally agree! They looked like the older brothers of the kids in high school which was when I discovered them. Also, they seemed to be enjoying themselves while playing (or making a video of) their songs, without the pouting, posturing, and overly-affected seriousness. Phil's voice is so strikingly distinctive, along with the layered music that made me an instant fan.
Well, by this time they were in their 30s, so all the crazy clothes and long hair were long gone. Especially if you look at pictures of their previous singer around 1972-1973 :)
This song gets ZERO credit for what it is: It's fucking AMAZING on so many levels. The thing that jumps out is the incredible rythym section. The drumming and bass are utterly amazing. Unless you are a musician, no one can truly make you understand just how hard it is to play drums and sing at the same time. And Mike's bass lines are so FLUID and flawless. Geddy Lee is knodding with approval...trust me.
@@joyceanderson3165 well he's not singing and playing at the same time. lol. That's simply something that's not done in the studio. The drums are recorded first and the vocals are usually overdubbed as the very last thing. this is just a music video where they can lip-synch or do anything they like.

One of their most underrated songs! The horn section from earth wind and fire or EWF, actually played the horns in this song. Great song! Long live Genesis!
@@WoodyFeagleI almost cried when I saw him on his last concerts. He looked so frail and in pain. My heroes arent supposed to age or die. And Phil Collins thinks nobody likes him or his music, which is crazy as now people are realizing just how good he is compared to the musical "talent" we have today. And he was Robert plants drummer on his first and best solo album.
Some magazine called rutherford the least talented musician of all the bands that have succeeded in the charts. This video denies that idiotic comment.
It seems he and everybody connected with Genesis enjoyed what they were doing, Phil especially, and it really comes through in so many ways. Humor shows a keen mind.
This album is criminally dismissed by old school fans and underappreciated by everyone else. It's such a unique blend of styles and sounds. They only made one ABACAB, and it could have only been made at that moment.
Fun Fact:Earth,Wind and Fire's Phoenix Horns are playing in the background on this song Genesis was huge fans of Earth Wind and Fire so Maurice White and Philip Bailey lent them to Genesis
Can’t figure which is best? The horns? Mike laying down amazing riffs on bass? Or Phil belting it out while hammering the skins. An absolute timeless classic!
He started singing away from the mic. In those days it wasn't common knowledge how songs and music videos were edited and put together. They tried to give the illusion that these were recorded live in one take.
How incredible that the greatest prog band of the 70s just seamlessly transitioned into a band that could lay down an absolutely tenacious groove like this. No finer collection of musicians has ever been assembled.
Genesis is my favorite band of all time can't give enough respect to Phil Collins the man one of my favorite joints of all time besides MAN on the corner 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥👍👍👍👍👍😡😡😡😡😡😡
The horn section from the 3 great elements of the world!!!!!!! My mother's FAVORITE GROUP!!!!!!! I really hope she gets the chance to meet Maurice White!!!!!!!!!! RIP Mom, RIP Maurice White!!!!!

Many years later, I get it. Now I can't get enough of them. You could set your watch to them.
He cracked himself up at 1:32 when he messed up the lip sync. 😂 Who can play drums , sing, AND flawlessly synchronize to their own recording simultaneously? The man is a legend for a reason. 🙌🏻🙌🏻
True story: I first saw this video in 1983 when I was 12 years old. When I got to 2:07 in the video, when Phil Collins winked at the camera, well that's the moment I fell head over heels in love with him--a feeling that would prevail for decades!
I have listened to this song since 1981and I never heard this as an upbeat song I always felt it was a painful story, that I can relate to, guess that is why almost 42 years later I still listen to this song
To see him in full action : Genesis Live 2007 : He plays the drums and sings at the same time Folow You Follow Me; then on Firth of the Fifth he plays the drums only and then sings and play the tambourine on I Know What I Like and finishes on drums again. The man was a badass performer!
The older I get, the fresher this song is.❤
The hard it is to hear
I was just thinking the same thing.
This is my favorite Phil Collins song. Love it to this day.
its been a minute since i heard it...still fresh yup....outstanding yup
Same for the video: freshy fresh
Rutherford is killing it on bass!
right, man!

Peter Gabriel put Bowie, Elton and Freddie to shame with his getups in the mid 70's. Lamb Tour.

They were known as the Phoenix Horns.
I agree very underrated but not sure of the year on this but early 80s n I like most all his hits n this was one.❤🥰
Phenix Horns
Was it Phoenix Horns on this? I had it as the Squib Cakes in my head but I’m not a horn section aficionado. I just love playing this bassline.
@@Terrible_Peril Phenix Horns, yes.
Nobody talks about the damn fine bass line Mike is laying down.
Brian Jones he’s really good on the bass!
Props to his bass line!
Bass guitar yeah

I do Mike Rutherford played with Mike and the Mechanics. With several hit songs
I don’t care how old Phil is now. He still melts my heart.

this song is just a pure concoction of why genesis is so great. it's got elements of prog rock but also pop, R&B, and funk. everything is on point.
Exactly 💯

This song just shimmers... Tony's liquid keyboards, Mike's funky bass, the punchy horns, and Phil's precise vocals and drumming. Love it
Apparently the horn section in the song is the same horn section for Earth Wind and Fire.
Great comment … “shimmers” is the perfect word for this song!

ABACAB and duke are tied in my books. If you listen to ABACAB and then follow the directions and put another record on there music starts to change.
Totally agree. It has some of the most daring and experimental work the band did ever since The Lamb.

Mike is a fantastic bass player for sure!!
One of my all time favorites. I call it “progressive soul” which is a genre with very few songwriters and musicians. Genesis were ahead of their time.
That's an excellent description and I like your outlook on music. Rock on!

Fantastic Bass Made Whole Song
Mike never got a lot of opportunities to shine on Genesis' work, but holy mother, when he does, it's gold.
@@SuperSparrow45 it only took me over 40 years to notice how well Rutherford plays his bass guitar.

How incredible that the greatest prog band of the 70s just seamlessly transitioned into a band that could lay down an absolutely tenacious groove like this. No finer collection of musicians has ever been assembled.
