“Three Sides Live” was filmed in November 1981 on the “Abacab” tour in North America
Originally released on VHS to coincide with the live album of the same name. It has only ever been released digitally. Originally filmed in 16mm, the footage has now been fully restored and is being reissued. The show focuses on tracks from the “Duke” and “Abacab” albums and the tracks are intercut with behind the scenes footage and interviews with the band members. As ever with Genesis, the show is visually stunning and it captures the band in their transition from their progressive days in the seventies through to the hugely successful pop/rock act they became from the mid-eighties onwards. Genesis have always been great live performers and “Three Sides Live” is a great addition to any fans collection.
TRACKLISTING:

after mccartney maybe the biggest group/solo career....arguable of course , but incredible career
So sad to see him so frail and immobile now. Phil and Genesis have given me so much awesome listening (and 2 of their concerts) over tge years.
You are speaking truth. Never forget
Very underrated drummer Chester Thompson pounding the drums in perfect sync !!!!!!!!! He should be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He is very underrated. Although I must say, at least Modern Drummet magazine never seemed to forget about him. I used to always see something related to Cheatwr Thompson regularly, whether is be a small article, or a cover feature. A friend of mine even had a Star Licks instructional video with Chester and another one with Jeff Pocaro
How was he underrated, he was the live drummer in one of the biggest bands in history for years!

I knew about Chester from MD as well. I knew who he was when I first saw this video on MTV.
MTV is also how I learned that Phil is a lefty.
He also sounds great on the Zappa records he played on, one of them (Roxy & Elsewhere) being the reason he was hired to join Genesis on the strength of his interaction with another drummer.
This is the music of my youth. When I hear it everything else stops and I am truly transported back in time.
Me as well my friend!
I can see why Phil was so in shape. Dude was so energetic on stage.
Also, he was a drummer for a decade or more before he began singing, and most drummers are in pretty good shape.

Huh?
Plus he was only 30 years old in the prime of his life mate
Nothing better than Chester and Phil together.
There really isn’t!
Chester and Phil together is one of the pinnacles of Western Civilization.
So sad Chester won’t be on the upcoming show. If you have a chance check out the interview with Chester from Rolling Stone February 2021

Yeah, that sucks. But Phil's son Nic is a great drummer and he's only 20 - kid's got major talent.
Best of times , my neighbor would play Turn It On Again, Abacab , Misunderstanding , Phil Solo , The Cars & I instantly became a Fan.
I used to be a big music snob. When Peter Gabriel left Genesis, the band was dead as far as I was concerned, and I made snotty remarks about the pop Phil Collins Genesis. Teaching online, I am constantly nagging my kids to turn on their cameras, and after a while I start singing, "Turn it on, turn it on again." So I looked up the post-Gabriel Genesis song, and found after all these years I really liked it. It's great. Not as arty as Gabriel, but catchy as hell, beautiful intricate rhythms, great vocals, good stuff.

It’s the song writing, chord progressions that kept Genesis going and the force which is Tony Banks, without him there is no Genesis
@@MrDuds1984 You got that right! I’m so thrilled to see Tony Banks play on stage again in 2021!
The Genesis DNA was still in the band, Banks and Rutherford. While Gabriel has important aspects of lyrics and visuals, he is sometimes given too much credit. Banks and Rutherford wanted to move away to more pop, and they mentioned it enough in interviews.
I am happy to have a band whose music I can enjoy from early prog to pop.

I still cannot believe how Phill Collins could be one of the most amazing singers and of the best drummers of all the time...
Truth!
He started out singing, in musical theater, as a child.
He's no Chester Thompson

Dave Grohl is very good too but with less technique
the best is Renaud Hantson and Don Henley too
Only a real drummer can sing this on/off key what a talent
Masterpiece, full of energy
this song would resurrect Julius Caesar
Nothing better then starting the day of my 20th birthday listening to this iconic Genesis hit. #April19
Happy birthday😉🙋
me too, April 19, just a certain numberbefore you, my friend !
Phil is one of the best preformers ever
I agree Chris. I got bullied in high school for liking him
@@mariaschatz9141when I was in high school in 1989. Genesis was very popular and they had a concert in Atlanta. The next day at school just about everybody had t-shirts from the concert. Nobody in my school made fun him at all. What year was it when they made fun of you for liking him?
Sexy as hell too!
Indeed! Love Phil. His positive energy. I’ll never comprehend the disdain he has received from people or other artists.
quite possibly the most underrated full blown rock star ever. he took the fuck over for Peter against his original wishes. And he fucking crushed it.
Best band that ever existed period.
The time signature changes in this song are very, very cool.
I got to finally see Genesis perform Live at the Wells Fargo Center down in Philadelphia with my mom and brother!
One of the greates Rocksongs ever
Outstanding.
Rock classic by a legend
Glory days.
Hit after hit after hit after hit....
Live performances the rest could only aspire to.
Genesis.
Great song.
He was one of the best drummers ever to grace the instrument.. I started playing drums because of Collins and Stewart Copeland of the Police… Collins was one of the best to be self taught…He was a master of odd time signatures…
As a musician, it is easy to appreciate what Phil Collins has been able to do with music that many others cannot replicate. Specifically, at 3:04 he uses vocals to imitate his own similar drum fills and patterns with the rhythm of his voice. Sometimes the simple stuff is what makes the greats legends.
what the fuck are you talking about
He just says turn it on again at 3:04 whilst fisting up 🤔🤔🤔🤔
But ure probably going to reply with no it's deeper than that 😄, you won't understand if your not a musician 😂. And loads of singers use there voice to there own drum fills
Chester is a straight bad ass!!!
yup, he was Omar B4 Omar
Génesis Forever !!! Then and now !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am going to see them in December, and I cannot wait. I saw Phil on his own a few years ago… awesome show
I thought his voice was so bad that he couldn't really sing anymore and he couldn't drum because of the arthritis. I guess maybe he's good now.
@@VenomStryker I disagree with you. He is going into his 70’s. I think his voice is still amazing
@@LBach I just remember reading something years ago about him having problems with his voice and not being able to drum. Perhaps I was mistaken.
@@VenomStryker you're right that he isn't able to drum anymore but his singing is still pretty good imo. if you haven't seen them yet, there are quite a few videos around from live shows in 2019. you can obviously tell his voice has aged but he can still hang lol
Saw his Still Not Dead Yet tour in Denver 2 years ago in Denver. Genesis this Monday. Can't freaking wait...
Chester!!! I remember being at the Phoenix, AZ concert in 1984 and watching Phil and Chester both play drums at the same time - freaking phenomenal. The precision was beyond human; and I'll never forget the amazing feeling in my chest from the beats thru the amplifiers in the coliseum. Pure Heaven! I still get chills thinking about that.
Never gets old. Remember jamming to this in high school in the mid-80’s…
Right there with ya Willie ...The early MTV years ..The 80s!!!!!
The golden era. No social media, just rock n roll baby!
I'm 64 and this is classic and style. Never will happen again.

I'm a Genesis fan and still make genius music. Check me out!
@@JustNeedaBeerandPark You'll catch on at some stage, but to speed things up; try reading beto's comment again.
Ok, boomer
Chester Thompson pounding us into the unseen realm with his perfect snare drum strikes !!!!!!!!
Man chester is a machine. I tapped the tempo of the song and he was right on the money. 160 bpm
Chester on this man! I never get tired of listening to these guys! Soundtrack of my younger days.
What I love about this video is the juxtaposition of “Turn it On” with all the people and all the hard work that goes into a live performance.
I'm here after watching them perform this song live in 2021. All I can say is that if you have anything to do, do it while you're still young(ish).
Love this man
...
Genesis, A real band with buckets loads of talent and creativity! Phil at his very best here and 'Turn It On' is a highlight for me from 'Duke' not one of my favourite albums. Kids of today , this is how effin good we had it back in the 70's and 80's. no autotune, no social media BS, no phones. Just music live and pure and bloody brilliant!
You're so right about the talent. Between Genesis and Phil Collins there's got to be over 50 hit songs. They deserve to be recognized for their fantastic creative songwriting, musicianship and singing too. Love watching their live performances on youtube.
Just once it would be nice to read a review that didn't include shitting on young people. Guess who raised those young people, genius?
Good to see Phil at his best, jumping around having fun and on point, even dancing like an Egyptian 😎
steobriancorcoran a bloody good actor to 😊
@@andrewmatthews6861 His daughter inherited his acting talent.
Seriously, how does a person have a voice like Phil's? I've met thousands of people and I can image hearing them sound like this if given a chance to sing. And wasn't he a drummer first and a singer 2nd? Incredible voice.
Whoever dubbed the Stones the 'world's greatest rock n roll band' never saw Genesis live.
I'm 31 years old and I cannot wait to see you guys live in November!
Damn. Like most 80s music when I was a teen just took it for granted. Always paid heed to 60s and 70s. Now this stuff just blows my mind open. So good!!!!!!
You gotta love Phil... he didn't give two fucks about his clothes in 1981... and now it's 2021 and still no fucks are given.
I just love how the performance is so energetic. Phil's totally making love to the mic, Mike's going mad on the guitar, Chester's sporting some fine open hand drum action, and then there's Daryl, who calmly strums the rhythm guitar and taps the bass pedals while sitting and Tony, who's just as calmly providing piano and Prophet synth lines.
Cocaine
Banks was always like that in concert. A counterpoint to Phil's zany humor. There's a video of 'Misunderstanding' from the same show, where Phil sings "Still don't believe it, he was just leaving!" pointing at Tony's very blasé face, like he's the dude cheating with Phil's girl! Great live band.
Turning 71 in 2 hours, this song energizes me to keep on dancing! There is only today and if lucky, tomorrow.
I am an old-Genesis fan, but I have to admit it, I do enjoy Three Sides Live, a lot.
Best album ever
Pure,raw energy especially on drums.
I was 16 when I heard Abacab on rock radio. Got the album and loved it. Then Three Sides Live came out and I was obsessed. All the songs got an injection of power. And when Chester and Phil roll down those small skins in like the medley.
UNTOUCHABLE
Saw them in 1981 when they did this tour and one of the best Genesis concerts and he did exactly what he did here and it was one of the best moments ever.. He got so into this great tune and came out without his shirt as well and remember those wrist bands,Phil Collins is the best ever and Phil and Chester at the end on the drums was classic Genesis...
what difference no shirt track trousers and he lived just down the road in Ealing.
Lucky
@@mariaschatz9141 Yea I was blessed and saw them from 1976 until 2007... Best band ever
One of my favourite songs of all time absolutely brilliant live WOW what a legendary band Mr Phil Collins God bless
"I get so lonely" says it all for most...
I made it thru the 80's thanks to these guys. Finding this was a trip back in time.
NOW THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST OF ABACAB !!!!
This was done on the Abacab tour but the song is from their Duke album.
Jesus the 80's what a time for music. Please Lord take me back to simpler times.
Saw them in the summer of 1982 at Forest Hills Stadium NYC
Not hard to love Phil..so much energy from all the band and they had real fun...wish I was there. Phil is the man.
Chester Thompson laying down that driving beat. 👍
that time change at 1:08 is just brilliant
Progressive Rock dude... It is fuckin awesome
"Mon Philou " est génial, comme d' hab !!
Beautiful music, handsome Phil! ☺
From another planet.
The genius of Genesis, a song that will go on forever. What a great band.
My FAVORITE version.......Thank you
Yes yes they going on tour again and its 2020 genesis is timeless
It will be hard to watch. Still going but I'm sure tears will flow seeing Phil on a chair and not behind his drums.
Nobody's going on tour in 2020, my friend.
I've got to see them!!
@@TheBoondoggler Can you honestly see a rock concert happening 7 months from now. We're only about 4 months into this thing. If anything, it will be them on stage, in masks, playing to an empty room, broadcast on the internet.

It's such a complicated song to sing. Phil Collins is a legend.
HOPE PHIL IS IN THE RN R HALL OF FAME HE DESERVES IT BIG TIME!!!
I've loved this song since I was 8 years old. Timeless for me.💜
Me too, reminds me of playing with lego for some reason 🙂

Good blue collar song and video.
A time when bands played real instruments and did not lip sync while playing and singing live in concert. We miss these real times and real artists. Crank the volume up! Turn it on and up!!
When the quality of ones vocals mattered
So good to hear this again. Genesis was a powerhouse and so was Phil Collins
Daryl Sturmer and Chester Thomson are the real backbone of Genesis as well as Phil Collins own concerts
There are four Genesis..........the Peter years............the post Peter years........., the post Steve years.........and the Phil pop years. I got to see all four phases in concert. Yeah yeah yeah.......I got all their albums too. Blah, blah blah. I'm a keyboardist and usually warm up playing something from all four stages. Rock on Phil, Peter, Steve, Chester, Tony, Mike, and Ray. You all made a difference in your own rite.
I loved Chester with Genesis. Amazing drummer. . And when he and Phil played together it was a thrill!!!
Timeless. Listening to this 40yrs after the song came out, 38yrs after BSL. Needed the pick me up/inspiration and few other songs do the job.
A Classic Genesis song. Brilliant. Turn it on.
I saw them in 1982, Saratoga. Last time they ever performed Supper's Ready - Yet this piece thrilled me more!
First time I heard this great song was this video on Mtv when they still played music. This must have been one hell of a tour judging from this video.✌️👍
Have seen them live from 1977-2007 and this was one of the best concerts they put on..Genesis will live on forever on cd's and DVD'S and what I remember which unfortunately. is not a complete recollection. LOL..
Turn it on Again BELIEVE IN THE IMPOSSIBLE BREAK FROM THE MATRIX, I DID
Super nothing more 👍🏻respect 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Duke is probably their most underrated album. In fact it's probably one of the most underrated of all albums!
The perfect bridge between the old Genesis and the new. :)
This man is about to do another things, not music, not stage.
He's my idol forever!
Reading Not Dead Yet by Phil. What a great read. great book.
Had to come and watch this after seeing the recent live performance of this. It's sad how Phil is going out there in such a rough shape he is in.
Phil is like Sting, only better. He is THE guy.
Absolutely love this song❤❤❤Fantastic, Phil Collins is a legend❤❤❤❤
Just a damn great tune! With I could write like this.
That british accent.. 'it's driving me mad'... I love it...
