☠︎ Found the secret easter egg in today's video? Be the 1st to comment what it is and where it occurs in the video, and you will get pinned!! ☠︎
It’s a little surreal hearing a MrBallen video about your sister. My older sister, Ariel, was one of the 4 that were in the cave that night. Of the pictures at 7:28, she’s the one on the far left. She was only 18 when she died. Her family loves her very much.
Thank you, MrBallen, for being respectful telling this story (unlike many of the comments) and not dramatizing it too much. Hearing this has made me realize that it’s easy to forget that the stories you tell are true stories, and each one has an untold epilogue of heartache and broken families.
I'm very sorry that your sister was one of those unlucky souls who lost their life that night! Yes the comments can be very cruel and they don't really realize that even though people can do reckless things that cost them their lives they still have families that are left in pieces so being respectful of that fact is often lost on people. I can't imagine having my loved one die in any way and being featured on a channel with hundreds of strangers criticizing their choices!! Thankfully we at least have John (Ballen) who's always respectful of the people he's talking about, no matter what choices led them to their deaths. I hope your family managed to find a way to carry on despite this tragedy 💛
She was beautiful. I'm sorry for your loss.
RIP
I’m very sorry too. Such a lovely girl. So sad for you & your family. Love from Australia ❤️🌻
I’m very sorry for the loss of your lovely sister..May she Rest in Peace.
When I hear the words "just big enough for a person to fit through" what I really hear is "just big enough for a person to die in"
EXACTLY. If they’d each reached their 25th birthday prior to getting this big idea, their frontal lobes would’ve been fully developed, and they would’ve turned around and gone back after seeing how little it was in there. They should raise the voting age to 25 or 26, too. Or maybe 40, since that’s generally the age people have gained adequate wisdom to not make idiotic decisions, although I’ve known lots of wise people under the age of 25, and I’ve known lots of idiots over 40.
I love diving but even with full gear I still would not go cave diving because I hate small dark spaces that have a greater risk of an obstacle that you can't get out. There's no way in hell I would go diving, no matter how short the tunnel, without gear. The only way I go under water is if I can look up and still see the light of the sky.
@@kayceequesadilla Age doesnt matter. You can be 70 and be dumb and immature, and you can be 21 and know basic common sense

Perfect comment.
How stupid were they- completely stupid.
@Phoxly Red That's probably the wisest way to translate that statement. If it hasn't saved your life by now, it likely will at some point. Listen to your "little voice" and be safe.
You know something goes bad when he starts telling from the perspective of the person who didn’t go into the tunnel.
I love the "gut feeling" stories when people all of a sudden get the urge to NOT do what they planned to do and it saved their life.
My gut Feeling told me so often to Not Go to the Gym
Must have saved my Life many Times
Thanks for the Perspective :D
My husband and I have a "gut feeling" rule. If one of us gets a weird gut feeling about something, the other has to listen. The last time I invoked the gut feeling rule it was about a car parked in front of our house. Turned out it was stolen.
@@FawnieFox oh, my dad has had the gut feeling before. He was going to turn off the water in a abandoned house and when he was about to go into the basement (with a wide open door in total darkness) his gut told him not to. He listened to it. Turns out there was a body of a missing 7/11 clerk in there.
@@WhateverDude38 always listen!

Once again, from all the stories he has told, proves the "when in doubt, chicken out and offer to be the look out" saying cannot be more true.

I had no idea he would do this story. I helped raise one if the girls who died in that cave. What wasn't mentioned is we a ton of rain that year and the water level was so high that oxygen couldn't get into the air pocket like usual so they were breathing CO2 and that may have caused them to get disoriented when trying to swim out.
I can tell you that watching this channel has ended any last desire to go on a cruise, go near the woods, and has drastically intensified my claustrophobia. These caving/diving videos make me appreciate my couch.

My husband went down into a cave when we were in Snow Canyon State Park in Utah (not the lava tubes). He was trying to find a way down and I was getting increasingly anxious. Especially cause the kids wanted to follow. Just looking down into the pit opening was enough to make me sick. I asked how he planned on getting back out once he dropped about 7 feet down from the wet ledge he was standing on. After a minute of thinking he decided he liked living and got out of there.

Its amazing how many people don't have enough common sense to get a rope and any other gear they might need to explore areas that are obviously dangerous.
One of the unexpected things about MrBallen's videos is that a high percentage of them feature comments from individuals that are closely linked to either the scenarios or the people involved, lending a very human and relatable element to his subject matter. Thanks for doing what you do man. You give a voice to those who would otherwise go unknown and unheard.
A few things I've learned from watching Mrballen's videos
• Don't act dumb
• Don't make dumb Choices

I can't believe your telling this story. I went into this cave with 4 friends back in 1993. There is an underwater tunnel that we swam through and did come up on the other side. It was so scary. I didn't see any Satan sacrifice stuff but it was scary going through the water. In fact one of the girls with us started crying after getting through the underwater tunnel. I didn't blame her at all because it was frightening. I'm so sorry to the victims and their families. That is so tragic. So sad.
Was there anything in there at all?
So did you give each other space when heading back? Or cram like these guys?
I worked with one of the girls. I remember she never showed up to work and the manager was super frustrated because she couldn't get ahold of her. Turns out she'd died. I've never actually heard the details of what happened. I thought for sure it was something I'd made up in my head.
I can imagine the shock and sudden realization of your manager why she was not able to make it to work.

I actually became friends with Joe through the DIY hardcore/punk scene, and heard about this briefly from him. It might be of interest to some folks that Joe is very responsible and extremely trustworthy, more than most people I know. ALSO I know that Blake was the singer for a Utah hardcore band called Parallax; and this story really made its way throughout the punk scene, it’s kinda surreal seeing a proper video about it. Totally heartbreaking. Great job covering this with dignity.
This is a super sad story. I grew up pretty close by. Jennifer's family lived up the road maybe a mile from me. I didn't personally know Jennifer but I was friends (more like a friendly acquaintance with her sister Melissa). I had heard about this cave as well but I couldn't ever find it. My aunt said Jennifers mother still hasn't fully recovered from the tragedy. My heart goes out to these families.
If all six in the group had gone down, this would have been one of those unsolved-for-decades cases of missing people completely disappearing without a trace. There must be so many cases like this, with the families never knowing what happened to their loved ones.
Good grief…. Just leave a note! Why some dont is inexplicable.

Near this spot in Provo, there's also an abandoned asylum. It had to be like 2010 or around there, we broke in a couple times. It was massive, and creepy. I saw one room that had that classic full padding on the walls, and there another room with one of those gurneys that had the leather straps to keep someone's arms in place. The creepiest thing I remember is when going into the basement (it took the 2nd time going to get the nerve), we stumbled into the laundry room, which still had 2 rows of laundry machines. We shined our light down the row and one of the dryers was shaking like it was on, but no sound was happening. We bolted and I haven't been back since. Bad juju!
We used to call the cave "Gollum's Cave". My sister had been in it before they closed it. It was a very minor cave, and mostly only college kids went there, as it was way too small for most of the cavers in the area to visit it. Conversely, Nutty Putty Cave, another local cave with a fatality, was pretty popular with the experienced cavers and inexperienced alike before it got closed permanently :/
And that's why you listen to your gut and turn back even if everyone else is about to do something stupid.

Joe sounds like he didn't believe there was really a cave and changed his mind when he saw it was real. Good choice on his part.
Joe was the only one who had any common sense, to not go underwater in a tunnel in a cave, not knowing what was on the other side.
We'll never know about Steven, because his dedication to going to work probably saved his life.
I might have went into the cave, but I would have been keeping Joe company waiting for the others to reemerge.
I always think everything happens for a reason. Yes, 4 people died but life has a strange way of doing things. It just wasn't Joe's time. Everything's connected, we might be "tools" for helping others, our children might help someone in a future, we might help prevent an accident, IDK. Life's strange. We're not the only ones so we might as well be a tool for someone else to use. I hope it makes sense.

Words of wisdom …..
this has become my favorite go-to channel. What a great storyteller!
When I was 14, I had a recurring nightmare that I would die from drowning. When I learned to drive, there was a back road that lead to my grandparents house and I refused to drive on it because there was cranberry bogs on both sides of the road. I was always afraid that if the car went in, I would not be able to get the doors to the car open and my nightmare would come true. It took a few years to finally drive down the road. Obviously I survived. So thinking about doing this would be a definite No. So sad for those in this story.

No flashlights for regular diving is bad enough but cave diving, that's a death wish.
You are FANTASTIC at telling these stories!!!!!!
This is a good reminder of hos even a really small and simple underwater cave can be deadly without proper procedure. Campared to many other underwater caves on this channel this one seems pretty tame, but somehow it still killed 4 people. I mean it was short, straight forward, the water was chrystal clear (though freezing).
Three things I have learned from a Navy Seal:
1- I love the strange, dark and mysterious told in story format.
2- Never go caving
3- Never ever ever EVER go in underwater cave tunnels with or without gear. Just don’t.
😂
I agree completely! No way I'll ever go into a cave especially if it has water in it!
Yeah, also don't go into the woods, don't climb mountains, don't go where you are not supposed to go. Just stay home and do nothing 😂
3- Never ever go even as a professional cave diver…
4- no one can ever save you from stupid ideas. Ever.
Make sure to never go into the woods either 🤣
People should have figured out by now if it seems “just big enough to get through” it isn’t big enough to get through

I used to love going into caves and tunnels. Hell even culverts drew me through their mouth's. That lasted till one bright and sunny day I found a new culvert, one I had never looked in. I got down and cleared the weeds from the entrance and crawled in. This culvert was small then the ones I usually entered and once I was about half way across the road from underneath I became stuck! I think it was just the belt loop on my jeans but I could not go forward or backward. I panic and began to call for help, screaming, crying, I thought my young heart would explode it was beating so fast. Suddenly I felt hands around my feet, and I was yanked out of the culvert backwards. Within seconds, I was outside once again, I could breath and my heart slowed to normal. I looked behind me and there stood our old neighbor farmer, you see that culvert was right by his mailbox at the end of his long driveway and he heard my calls for help. Now before that I had always thought the neighbor was an evil old man because of his long beard and hair dropping below his shoulders. After that though I came to appreciate the old fellow and when mom cooked a bit to much for supper, I would carry him a hot pot and sit with him as he ate. He was cool and full of stories of when the west was young and the Indian ran wild.
you are lucky not to die that..so many died due to the misadventure...
@Franz Kafka I have no idea where you get that idea, it is the truth. I could go into my background as a police officer, my years as a chief of police, my time as a paralegal law clerk for a District Court Judge but you would probably call that plagiarism as well. I have had some of my pros published as well as some fiction short stories but again, you would perhaps not believe any of that either. Actually 2 people. The first didn't go @ all because he had to work.
How very tragic! As a teen, years ago, I and 3 friends got lost in a cave. We were stupid and ill prepared. Even though 3 of us had previously been in the cave, the cave was 12 miles long , had 8 entrances and was honey comb shaped. We realized we'd lost our markers (cause the cave was already full of string and chalk markers). About an hour or two in, one flashlight went dead, and we dropped the 12v light down a ravine. Finally, our last flashlight started flickering, so we found a muddy crawlspace to all hunker down in. We knew we'd have to wait for rescue. Although we thought it might be a couple of days before rescue, they pulled us out the next morning. We emerged from the cave into the homeowners yard we'd trespassed through to find a command post of 3 rescue groups, generator search lights, a coffee trailer, and our families along with 75-100 concerned people. Oh... did I mention it was my birthday?!
We'd gotten quite the lecture on safety (rightly so) from one of the guys who'd spent a year+ mapping the cave. We had a happy ending, and were fortunate that my (hard headed) mother insisted THAT was the cave we were in as rescuers were ready to move locations after searching 3 of the entrances and not finding us. I think we (atleast i) were truly ignorant of the potential danger we were in. As an adult looking back, I'm amazed at how careless, naieve and just plain stupid we were, but the bravado that comes with the flighty nature of being a teenager has long since been laid to rest. Since that experience, I've adopted the boy scout motto "Be prepared".
Wow that was a hellova experience playing with life
Damn. Glad you guys made it.

Im glad you didn't unalived yourself with your friends by this.

I couldn't imagine dying like this. Panic and anxiety. Nothing but darkness, wedged in a underground tunnel in the middle of nowhere and the silence of being under water. Just feeling my friends kick and pull on me. And what if you were in the middle but could hold your breath the longest? Then just feeling you're friends give out one by one knowing your next...
It would be horrific. And I can't imagine how horrible this was for the guy standing watch or their friends and family. At least the other two friends decided not to go. So heartbreaking.

It’s a great reminder although not to hold us back from living life to the fullest.
Just listen to your gut and critical thinking.
I've only just come across this channel and was unaware of this particular tragedy. Living in the UK, I can't remember it being well documented over here. Such a horrible way for life to end, helplessly trapped and submerged in a dark, restricted water filled tunnel. The stuff of nightmares! What was anticipated as being a spontaneous fun filled daring adventure cost them their lives! As long as humans live and possess an inner lust for adventure, unfortunately, these events have always occurred in the past, and will in the future. It's just the excitement of youth often overrides concerns about mortality. But many in this group were in their 20s and should have been more circumspect.
In those last dying moments, or when the consciousness of imminent danger fed into their mindset, they must surely have regretted their folly - wished they had not entered the cave. But too late. Entering a water-filled cave in shorts and sandals at 2-3 am, with no backup plan, no heat retaining diving suit, or waterproof lights, and oxygen tanks - simply fuelled by a misguided quest for thrills and adventure was simply madness. Maybe Jen who did it once previously had wanted to share the experience and thrill again with her friends. I guess with hindsight, we have all done something slightly dangerous at one time or the other, to a greater or lesser degree, but in this case, it ended in horrible circumstances, for both the group members and their families. Friends together in a band, and in death. Such an unnecessary waste of life. Hopefully, this story may serve as a warning.

My husband worked with Jennifer's sister. The police told the family that the group had lit candles in the air pocket causing a lack of oxygen. When they tried to get back they were already in a panic. That was the story told to my husband, anyway. Who knows what the grief stricken family might have misheard, or not.
That makes sense as to why they were all in the tunnel at the same time.
This explanation seems more plausible. Since I would have guessed the person in the back would have been able to swim back. Even without candles they could have recognized an oxygen shortage immediately and they knew they all needed to go back right away. Or there wasn't really an oxygen shortage but the one girl got stuck and drowned and then they all were swimming back and forth unable to move her and exit and over 2 hours 3 people consumed all the oxygen. Shit maybe they were even partially terrified once the girl had died and they thought that their friend would get help after a while. Then after 2 hours of waiting they realized they consumed all the oxygen.
Such a hard one to swallow. Cuz as an adult you tend to look at taking risks or doing something "fun or interesting" as unconsequential and this was supposed to be fun maybe a little dangerous or a little scary and wound up being so costly in the end. My heart goes out to all of you, especially the parents. What a terrible phone call to have to make and even worse to receive.
Wow, that sucks, but also... do they not know how fire works? Enclosed air pocket + fire = suicide.

Watching these whilst on a low point in my life makes me feel less like a loser cause at least I'm alive.
Jesus Christ is God incarnate who came to earth to be born and live a perfect life, a sinless life. (He is one person of the Trinity, consisting of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit; one God in three persons not three Gods.) Jesus then gave Himself up to be crucified and died to pay for the sins of the whole world. My sin, your sin, the sins of everybody. 3 days later He was resurrected. He now offers salvation to all who will turn from their sin and trust Him to save them from eternity in hell. He paid our debts because we couldn't, but we have to trust Him to do it. I cannot add anything to what He has done (not even baptism). I cannot do enough good to take even a year off of my death sentence in hell. The sentence is a never ending one, because I have sinned against an eternal God. But Jesus took my punishment, He saved me, and offers that same salvation to you. I am praying for you.
Lol
