Thank you, Mr. Ballen, for the retelling of my dad's story. His 6 hours in hell mission is unbelievable and one he didn't like to relive, but he told it in hopes of inspiring those who heard it. He never took credit for being a hero, although in all of our eyes he is one. He always said the real heroes are the ones who never came home. By the way, our family just celebrated the 40th Anniversary of my father receiving the Medal of Honor.
Again, well done Mr. Ballen. -Yvette Benavidez Garcia, Roy's proud daughter. #TangoMikeMike
Thanks to your dad for his service.
Your dads a hero
Yes a super hero. 💪
Ma’am, I’ve heard your dad’s story before, and am amazed and inspired by him each time. I wish I was half the man he was on his worst day.
I’ve heard your dad’s story many times. I can only imagine the internal strength of mind required to overcome the overwhelming physical trauma he endured and to keep fighting to save others. His story should never be forgotten. I’ve shared your father’s story with my children and hopefully they will share it with their own kids someday. I like to tell my kids that life will knock you down a million different ways, it’s your job to find a million and one ways to get back up. Inspired by your Dad. Thank you
I found the secret- it was Roys ability to walk normally while carrying the largest set of balls on Earth.

I have heard Roy's story so many times and avery time I am amazed.
Three things about Roy's story:
-Who was the helicopter pilot?
-Why no one has made a movie about his life?
-Diabetes is a really horrific thing, because Roy died by its complications.
I've never seen anyone accidentally typo Avery before, you must really love birds.

Roy didn't even die from anything related to the fighting. He died from complications with diabetes. This man is just built different.
Diabetes built different too
This dude was like I will not die to anyone until I save my comrades.
it's very possible that the damage he sustained in combat caused some of the complications. he did get shot and stabbed several times in the abdomen. that damage to the stomach, liver, etc. could have possibly made it more difficult for his body to manage sugars and produce/secrete insulin. i don't know his dieting and lifestyle, just saying it is possible

My throat started getting tight and tears formed. Wow, what an amazing story!
The man's body was literally destroyed in combat, and he made a full recovery. Yet, in the end, he couldn't survive with diabetes. The duality of the human body being extremely resilient, yet incredibly fragile at the same time... that's the mysterious part of this story.
multiple times no less
@S55 the only being strong enough to stop roy was himself.
He was in his 60's and lets be honest....no one is making a FULL RECOVERY from the damage that guy took....Im sure if he is anything like they said...You couldnt be able to tell cause he would be the last one to show it....but im sure that man had lots of battle scars and lots of pain as he aged.
Just a complete BOSS.
@@Spills51 Yes, I'm sure the "full recovery" was a bit exaggerated. He definitely had lots of aches and pains, if not actual health problems, over the years due to his injuries. I'm just amazed by the fact that he could survive such injuries in the first place, let alone several more decades after they healed, only to die from a rather common disease.

Truly bullshit
@@KerpelesI have a uneasy feeling concerning this matter, pretty much every action of the story 1covers the entire 10yr period of the Vietnam war condensed for the actions of just one man,
not wanting to take away from this man's bravery I'm having difficulty digesting the facts, stepped on a land mine all by himself out of uniform no foot injury 4yrs later in a religious service one minute, on a rescue mission 2nd minute, forgot his weapon as a GB, jump's into enemies lap, shot in head, shot 30+ more times 2hand grenade blast, carries 8men to one area, back for 2more, and repeats this after loading chopper by himself unloading same bird on fire carrying all the men into the jungle calls air strike on his position with a map he didn't forget that, gets stabbed with bayonet×12 with no loss of blood , no one else gets credit for trying to help, I don't think all the facts are represented in this story.

I’ve heard and read this story many times. Your telling was the best
Thank you for sharing this so much❤ my great grandfather fought in WW2 and apparently only shared his history with me, I didn't find out until a few years ago that it was a no speak topic for him because when I was little I would ask him questions and he shared freely with me, I know that he was a map maker who was sent forward first to map out the journey, and I know that he was sent afterwards to map out the tragedy of what happened, I saw both in his scrapbook which apparently he never shared with anyone else. I'm honestly not sure how to take that, I only know that my mom and aunt would ask questions but were told to stop, so when I told my mom how he shared with me it was a massive shock. Honestly I've never told anyone besides my mom, but I like to think that my great grandfather knew that I just wanted to learn history and there was no judgment and maybe that was why he felt safe sharing with me. Thank you for sharing and all your hard work
There are no words to describe a man like Roy, Hero doesn't even come close.
A real life Rambo
Imagine being a northern Vietnamese soldier in that regiment. They probably had asked themselves multiple times “Why won’t this guy die?”
" Dude I killed that man 32 times already "
@@bigsmoke5234 that shit straight up was like call of duty when the guy keeps surviveing your shots and you say to ur self fucking die already god dam well thats what i would say

Right!
Heck yes I liked it! How could you not be inspired by the story? We have forgotten who we are. God bless America and God bless any man or woman that will run into danger to save another person. 👍
This one had me so on edge. I need this as a movie now. Thank you Mr ballen.
Some friends of mine are relatives of Roy. They said he was the most humble man on the planet and he went to his grave saying he wasn't a hero. I think he was. What an incredible man.
Everytime I hear Roy give credit to the men who paid the ultimate price, I tear up like a lil bitch.
I’ve heard this story about 10 times before this. I never get tired of it, and always listen to whole thing. He should be a inspiration to all Americans on how to care for our country and rights!
Wow.. that man is the reason us Americans have such a good life. I'd be honored to be in the presence of his relatives
That man is no hero, that man is a legend, a legend of legends, the man who overcame death with sheer will.
"Heroes get remembered; legends never die."
Truth
Hey sorry for the self-promotion but I would appreciate it if you could check out my most recent montage and maybe give a little positive feedback. thanks!🖤
This story gave me chills 😭 such an honor, and yes he is a hero!
It's crazy how long it takes for many of these heroes to be recognized for their valor with the medal of honor.
