In every conflict you get a few charmed characters that are indestructible. My wifes grandfather used to recount his experiences from WWll, in every unit there were a few guys who had 'bloodlust' and would volunteer for every fighting patrol, and bullets just slid off them. Thanks for shining a light on a noteworthy countryman of kine John.
There’s an out of print book about Mad Jack… I’d love to read it. There’s another really great podcast out there about him I listened to a couple years ago…So glad you featured him!!!
This man is clearly a reincarnate. His comment about a soldier "not being properly dressed" if without his sword sounds like something that was drilled into him in another century. Thank you for your service, Jack Black. Well-done, Sir.
He probably just waited in awe to see what else he would do. There's a couple of these lunatics Death's seen before and they always die of natural causes even though they test limits for 40 years straight.
Part of the story reminded me of my grandfather. He was in the 12th armored division in World War II. He was in the Battle of the Bulge. His unit helped liberate the camp at Dachau. After the war he came home and had four kids with his wife, the youngest of which was my father. In about 2007 he went to get an x-ray on his neck for some health issue that he was having. After the x-rays were developed, the tech looked at them for a while, then called in another colleague to take a look at them. After some confusion they just looked at him and said, "Mr. Guy? are you aware there is a bullet in your neck!!?" and he just looks back at them and nonchalantly says, "Yeah, that sounds about right..." like it was no big deal at all. That bullet could have easily killed him if it had gone even slightly in any other direction. If it had, there would be three generations of my family that wouldn't even exist. We can only assume that he just thought he had been grazed back then. He ended up passing away in 2010 one month before his 90th birthday.
I don't recall the unit numbers/names my grandfather was in but wonder if he crossed paths with yours. He was also in the Battle of the Bulge and carried bodies of deceased Jewish prisoners at Dachau. He had been in the first wave on (i forget which beach on D-DAY Omaha or Normandy I think). Not knowing how to swim probably saved his life. He sunk to the bottom and held his breath as he walked up onto the beach out of the water. He didn't come home with a bullet like your grandfather but he took shrapnel to the leg. Decades later a piece worked it's way out of a toe. And another piece was discovered by his dentist. There was one story (he didn't talk much about it except once a year to a high school history class)... Story was they were in a town in France (if my memory is correct) and a fellow soldier was hit by a sniper and my grampa saw a big baby buggy and was able to lift the soldier into it to wheel him behind cover. There was a gun he took off a Nazi in my grandparents closet until recently (grampa passed in 98 and Gramma had to move to assisted living about 7 yrs ago. Have u ever read Brave Men by Ernie Pyle? He insisted on embedding himself in the trenches, on front lines and being with the common soldiers. There are a brief few lines he wrote about my grandfather. He did a good job describing my grampa like he did with everyone he wrote about. The book is very well written.
Your grandma will still exist and marry someone else and process to have next generation of children ie 3generation continues...fyi your granddaddy doesn't give birth.
One of my grandfathers was in the Battle of the Bulge, too. Survived despite having metal shrapnel permanently embedded in his leg due to shelling. All heroes who defeated the Nazis 🇬🇧🇺🇸
My grandfather was a tanker in the 12th armored division, as well. Would love to know if you have any more information about their experiences, as my papa unfortunately passed a few years before I was born. I did inherit a yearbook for the 12th as well as an SS officer's dagger that he picked up off the Battlefield after the Battle of the Bulge. He had a hand grenade tossed inside his tank, but thankfully was able to toss it into the air right before it detonated, only getting his pinky finger. Otherwise, three generations would cease to exist, just like you said. What was your grandfathers name, if you don't mind me asking? My papa was PFC Charles Hughes, Port Arthur, TX
@@alexandermarcus1497 his name was Edward Guy. Unfortunately I don't know much more. My sister told me he had 2 bronze stars. Unfortunately the one who would have known most of the stories (of which he usually didn't tell) was my father and he passed away from cancer 3 months after my grandfather. I'm sorry I don't have more.

The one personal story that defines the changing of fate, was when I was nineteen. Towards the spring of nineteen eighty-one, I found myself in the Canadian Military. A far cry, from the sixty-one I am today. My story is similar in many ways, because of a simple act of fate that would have made me nineteen forever. As I was preparing for one month leave, I was going to backpack solo through Great Britain, Scotland, and then France One guy who I hardly knew, had overheard my conversation with the barrack warden concerning my month-long absence. Just by chance, and asked me if I was into psychic phenomena? Hell, yeah, my mom was Acadian French, and I had more than my share of hearing Mrballen-type stories growing up. Again, l hardly knew this guy, maybe said hello twice? But my fate like poor Dave was intertwined with a person I barely knew The night before my trip, Perry asked me to come to his room, have a few beers and then the reading would begin. Dude went into a trance, said a few things I now forget, and then stated that I would meet a dark-haired woman in Switzerland who would want me to go with her, but If I did? I would be murdered. I thought, okay, I am not going to Switzerland at all actually. Perry just stated over and over that I was in great danger if I went with this woman, and that he was never wrong. Okay, so be it The next morning I leave, and the trip begins. I was stationed at CFB Trenton, ON. The plane takes off, and we land in Ottawa to pick up some senior brass, who are heading to either London where I was heading, or Baden Soliegen West Germany. Halfway over the Atlantic, the pilot announces that we had to bypass London, and would be going to West Germany instead. So I had to replan the whole trip, now remember this was old school Europe on five dollars a day Plane lands in West Germany, and man it's hot and humid as %. i look at the distance, say & it, and decide to backpack through Western Europe. So my nineteen-year-old self, boots around Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Sweden, back to Copenhagen, on to Munich, watching the East German border pass by, miles of miles of landmines, and barbed wire. Freaky stuff from back in the cold war era, when President Putin was still a KGB Colonel in East Germany The train leaves Munich for Innsbruck, then finally on to Paris, VIA SWITZERLAND. Now I had forgotten Perry's words completely. I was fixated on Paris as the last stop, and then back to West Germany, and finally Canada. At this time I had wayyyyyy too many beers and bottles of wine to even remember? Still, I was young. So I am standing in the isle way, just enjoying the Swiss Alps zoom by, beautiful memories just caught up in my thoughts Down the hall, a woman with dark hair approaches me. Many people love the corridors, allowing you to collect your thoughts. The woman is in her late twenties, kinda plain jane, a solid five plus in looks, lucky I believe it. She starts asking me the usual questions, and then asks if I want to spend some time with her in Lucerne? Sure, why not? Again, fate had decided on what decision I should make? The train pulls in, and I am standing on the platform. To this day, I still recall the train for Geneva on the right side, just pulling in, and waiting, as if for me to make the decision that would determine my fate. I look at the dark-haired woman on my left, and she's passing up and down frantically. I ask her if she's cool? and she gets very belligerent telling me to not ask questions, that she's waiting for someone, and then just as I say, $ lady Perry's words come crashing into my head. To this day, nearly forty-two years later, I can still remember his face as I looked at that train for Geneva. Christ, I nearly fainted. Everything slowed to a crawl in time, I gathered my wits quickly, and wait until the woman with the dark hair moves down the platform, and then jump on the train for Geneva just as the conductor is boarding. I give him my ticket, walk into a cubicle, and watch the woman with the dark hair, looking up and down my train with some guy screaming at her in German, looking for me I held my breath, as the train pulled out, and as they walked back down the platform still arguing. I sat there, ordered four beers, and calmed myself down. The train pulls into Geneva, I spend a few days just walking around in a daze, and then said $ it, forgot Paris, went back to the base in West Germany, and then back to my base in Canada. I arrive and call my mother who had fallen on her knees in prayer to God thanking him for my safe return. I thanked God and Perry. When I arrive, Perry asks me how the trip went? I told him the whole story, and the dude just looks at me and says, "I am never wrong dude, if you had gone with that woman, you would have never returned" By this time, I had had enough of the Military life, and just wanted to leave and enjoy freedom. And I did, on to other adventures in life. But if you ever wonder how fate can be determined in a brief moment in time, good or bad? This is how it can become. A Long story, BUT 100% TRUE
I always thought Jack was a Scotsman, because he carried bagpipes and a broad sword. Maybe he was just possessed by the restless spirit of William Wallace😄
Such a good storyteller. I will confess I giggled when you were talking about the sword and the surrender. If I could only have an ounce of his courage and fearless approach to life I would be happy. He was amazing!
Why would they make a movie about a straight white man who's a badass? Someone needs to be a sexually fluid multi-ethnic strong female character to be a movie made about them
"He played the bagpipes to pump up the commandos" ....... A phrase that's never been uttered in human history until now. Great storytelling as always... This guy was amazing, never heard of him before. Love your channel!
It was a train, and it really did happen, I know because someone I know saw him do it! Most people knew him, so expected it, but obviously some people didn't, but they all loved him on that train so I'm told
What a great character and story. The truth is there were very many soldiers like him in WW2, but sadly the vast majority didn't survive to tell the story. Jack was lucky enough to be one of the survivors that lived to tell the tale.
The "tactic" Jack used during operation where he made his soldiers yell a lot is something people actually did. No joke. Ever since late 1300 when Ottomans first show up in Balkans, there are mentions of very special group of soldiers used by all sides in those battles, roughly translated as "yellers". What they did was go around and yell at the top of their lungs and cause as much noise as possible, so the enemy would think that marching armies are lot bigger then they actually were, and it would cause panic among enemy ranks. Because they mainly moved in forest and hills, the noise they made would echo lot more, giving the impression that marching armies are helluva lot bigger.
It is also known as the Highland Charge. And from the broadsword and the bagpipes and kilt, it seems like he was very into Scottish military history and tactics and culture.
I love how incredibly happy you seem to be telling the story. Like it is an awesome story but who won horror and mystery and heinous crimes.. You are just lit up with happiness!
He wasn't a patriot for freedom lol he just loved war and fucking people up lmfao and his honor and pride is what made him live the bagpipe and kilt life. Facts.
WOW. That was the most amazing story I have ever heard. My uncle with 101th, air dropped in France in WW2 but his parachute didn't open fully. He made a crater in a field during a rain storm. His team tried to pull his body out of the hole, but instead used a jeep to recover him. He was alive, but missed the rest of war in the hospital with a broken back. He later fought with 82nd in Korea, and 6 tours of Vietnam with SOG . He is still alive at 95 year old. I thought uncle Davie had some tough stories. His guy Jack is tough.
@@Nile8765 Thank you for the reply. Uncle Davie does not talk about it. I remembered I asked him about Vietnam, "Why do you keep going back to 'Nam?" He said: "I have 5 kids and a 1 million dollar life insurance policy - if I die, the family is covered; but that ain't going happen, I got a friend upstairs." Davie once said he could tell when to duck or run, or get small. I believe him. I was in the Army during Desert Storm, I had the same things happen to me, I could tell and it saved my life many times.

This as a fantastic story!!! I really enjoyed it. Jack was a hero and an idol we should look up to. Someone who should inspire us to do more with life.
If you have a sword and I have any decent handgun, unless we're already at arms length and you have the drop on me, you're dead meat. If you are supernaturally good with a bow, you might hit me at 250 yards; I can range you with the first shot, and hit you in the center of the chest with the second, with a good .44 Magnum hunting revolver, at that range or a bit beyond. A good archer can get off 12 shots a minute; I can get between 20 and 30 hits a minute, with an M1 Carbine, out to 300 yards, and with an accurate AR 15, maybe almost twice that far, although that itty-bitty bullet might not do you a lot of damage that far down range. Benjamin Franklin was right: We'd have ended the Revolutionary War sooner if we'd made much more use of 12 shot per second, 250 yard (area target, a mass of men) archery, than 3 shots per minute, 25 yard musketry (maybe 75 yards if you patched your ball). But that's a far different proposition than the best weapons of WWII. If you handicap yourself with an inferior weapon, in battle, you are asking to become a casualty, and to be less effective at defending your squad-mates' lives. Mad Jack was indeed looney tunes. A bow could be very useful in combat--it's quiet, for one thing. I might very well carry one; a recurve can weigh just a few ounces; arrows, maybe an ounce each. But until I needed it, it would've been slung over my shoulder, and an M1 Carbine, Thompson sub gun, or M1 Garand would've been in my hands.
This man must have been a nightmare to raise. Can you imagine the energy and thrill seeking along with his intelligence and how easily he became bored when he was a child? His Mom should have gotten an award for keeping him alive through his childhood alone.

This is the coolest and funniest video I've encountered on this channel

As I was preparing for one month leave, I was going to backpack solo through Great Britain, Scotland, and then France
One guy who I hardly knew, had overheard my conversation with the barrack warden concerning my month-long absence. Just by chance, and asked me if I was into psychic phenomena? Hell, yeah, my mom was Acadian French, and I had more than my share of hearing Mrballen-type stories growing up. Again, l hardly knew this guy, maybe said hello twice? But my fate like poor Dave was intertwined with a person I barely knew
The night before my trip, Perry asked me to come to his room, have a few beers and then the reading would begin. Okay, so be it
The next morning I leave, and the trip begins. So I had to replan the whole trip, now remember this was old school Europe on five dollars a day
Plane lands in West Germany, and man it's hot and humid as %. i look at the distance, say & it, and decide to backpack through Western Europe. So my nineteen-year-old self, boots around Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Sweden, back to Copenhagen, on to Munich, watching the East German border pass by, miles of miles of landmines, and barbed wire. Freaky stuff from back in the cold war era, when President Putin was still a KGB Colonel in East Germany
The train leaves Munich for Innsbruck, then finally on to Paris, VIA SWITZERLAND. Now I had forgotten Perry's words completely. I was fixated on Paris as the last stop, and then back to West Germany, and finally Canada. At this time I had wayyyyyy too many beers and bottles of wine to even remember? Still, I was young. So I am standing in the isle way, just enjoying the Swiss Alps zoom by, beautiful memories just caught up in my thoughts
Down the hall, a woman with dark hair approaches me.
I ask her if she's cool? and she gets very belligerent telling me to not ask questions, that she's waiting for someone, and then just as I say, $ lady
Perry's words come crashing into my head. I give him my ticket, walk into a cubicle, and watch the woman with the dark hair, looking up and down my train with some guy screaming at her in German, looking for me
I held my breath, as the train pulled out, and as they walked back down the platform still arguing.

I think it’s used in the bible too

This is definitely the best story you've ever told lmao it was amazing, thank you for sharing the adventures of Mad Jack with us
Jack's story inspires me to live life to the fullest and stop making excuses.
This man must have been a nightmare to raise. Can you imagine the energy and thrill seeking along with his intelligence and how easily he became bored when he was a child? His Mom should have gotten an award for keeping him alive through his childhood alone.
Good for ol Jack! Those are the stories that are so feel good. I would imagine his men would have followed him anywhere!
OMG best story ever … makes me proud to be British … 🏹🇬🇧🏹🇬🇧🏹🇬🇧🏹
