    I've read Joe's book and I've seen touching the void both are fantastic. I feel bad for Simon though, Joe on one hand almost died and went through this tremendously terrible ordeal and he is rightly considered a survivor. Simon, on the other hand, had attempted what was essentially one of the most challenging, daring and brave mountain climbing rescues ever recorded but because he was forced to cut the rope it's considered controversial. The worst part about it is the fact that if he didn't cut the rope they likely would have both died and there wouldn't have been a story at all. I could understand why simon has some resentment towards Joe for writing the book and towards the community even if Joe would never blamed him for the choice he made. They're still plenty of people in the community and outside of the community that look on that choice and just don't fully understand the gravity of it. And so now he's forever known as the guy who cut the rope rather than a man who attempted an unheard of lone rescue of his friend from what was almost certain death at 20,000 feet. The trauma and guilt that he went through is every bit as brutal as the trauma that Joe had to endure and yet he's been stigmatized unfairly. As far as I am concerned, Simon succeeded in saving Joe and his actions should be seen as such.

    • @201hastings
      @201hastings 10 месяцев назад +13

      99.99% of people today don’t judge him for his decision to cut the rope. I’d say 50% judge him for not looking into the crevice after he passed by it.

      @@201hastings Even if people don't blame him today, they did back when it happened. When I watched the interviews with Joe and Simon during the making of the movie, you get the distinct impression that Simon is pretty bitter about the entire experience. Obviously he participated in making the movie but my feeling was that Joe took that opportunity partially to try to help Simon's reputation. I think it worked but it may have been too little too late. If you've had this reputation for a decade, obviously it's not going to matter if people's minds change.

      @@criminallyautistic8372 I could never bring myself to be mad at a friend for not saving me if I was unsavable. This friend of his desperately tried to hold on in freezing temps and winds for hours to help his friend, there's people way worse who would've cut the cord after 10 minutes. Now that would probably upset me a bit more. I still wouldn't blame them, but we wouldn't be as close after for sure, but I'd still prefer there only be one death rather than two. If nothing else, I'd be glad that at least our families would know what happened to us and my friend would get to go on and enjoy a full life. Of course no one wants to die, I'd be incredibly sad and upset but considering how hard this man tried to save him? If I was in those shoes I would know, even if I was gonna die, that my friend loved me enough to desperately try to get me down the mountain in the first place, and held on until he literally couldn't without risking his life. I don't think it'd actively harm our relationship after and if we drifted apart it'd be natural, at least on my end. Survival scenarios call for a survival mentality and as logical of thoughts as one can muster, even if it hurts them emotionally. Anyone who regularly takes risks such as rock and mountain climbing knows this well. It wasn't going to benefit the man with the broken leg to have his friend die with him, it'd just make for a more tragic story.

      I think it was in my late 20's when this started happening with some of my older, and more close relationships as they started marrying/moving/having kids/getting new careers and I was doing the same [minus the getting married and kids part- I'm just fine with my furbabies. My mom had my youngest sister when I was 16 and one of my closest friends (we have for sure drifted apart but mostly due to geography, I'm actually still very close with this friend) had a kid at 17 so whether I was at home or hanging out with friends, I've had my fill of babies for my lifetime lol]
      Anyways, it was definitely a weird phase that for me personally I started to take hard because I didn't understand what was happening and thought maybe something was wrong with me or that I was unlikable and I rememeber finally just talking to one of my friends (the one who had the baby) and being like "yo, what happened with our friend group and am I to blame at all?" And I had no clue but everyone else in my circles were kinda going through the same thing. Once I realized that, it was all a lot easier to accept and it def made me a more wiser, more mature individual in how I see life [Forrest Gump and the feather do a good job of showing what a (actually 2 if you include the snippets of Jenny's life) full life looks like in a 2 hour period; American Beauty and the bag blowing in the wind is probably a different thing. I never fully understood that movie lol.]

    That last story got me, I crashed a snowmobile in the wilderness of Maine broke my arm and fractured my leg. I managed to make it to hunting cabin were the people inside almost shot me thinking I was a bear trying to get inside. Granted after two weeks I was pretty animalistic at that point, trying to get inside with a tree branch I found. The women there is what broke me down though, leg in a hastily made splint one arm in a sling made from my boxers. I just collapsed and cried hysterically. That feeling of relief is hard to describe, it's like drowning and you think your not going to make it to the surface things start getting fuzzy and dim and then the sweat taste of air.

    Netflix UK recently released a docu-drama about Joe and Simon and I've never been more tense while watching a documentary. The way they talk almost casually about it is insane and Joe really captures the sheer crushing loneliness and desperation he felt, particularly when he was in the ice crevasse and realised the rope had been cut. It's one of those stories that has just stuck in my brain really hard and definitely worth a watch.

Now if there’s individuals out there that are that gullible and choose to believe that SOME of these stories are true then that’s there business. On the other hand if hearing the stories helps people get through their days of work and what not then it’s doing a great service to them regardless of the truth behind them.

      A lot of the stories have extra elements to them that he doesn't put in.
      The fact is, he tells stories really well and inspires people to go and research them further. Things that should be taught in school!

He crawled through their designated latrine area and when he realized he was now covered in shit and piss he started faintly calling for his friends who were asleep at the time but were literally planning to leave the next morning. The only reason they were still there too is because Simon was so distraught with the idea that he killed his friend he decided to just remain at the base camp for a few more days in order to prepare himself to tell the world what had happened. It's not healthy for either parties.

    That last story give me the chills. Simon isnt at fault, he fought for his friend beyond what most people would consider leaving him to die. Joe is just a bad@$s

      Yes. This truly stands out as one of the greatest survival stories ever. But as bad as it was, If Simon had not cut the rope, they'd both be dead. It's a tough situation. But Simon not only did the right thing, he did the only thing he should have.
