Returning for the bodies seems like such a crazy thing to do. I respect it, though. Never leave a man behind. I am sure it helped only going down the exit, but still. Can't even imagine it.
Often people don't return for bodies in underwater caves or on tall mountains like Mt Everest. It's simply too hard. Often, retrieving bodies only creates more bodies.
I am late but I just have to comment that diving accident, because I knew one of those man died in there. I am from Finland and my family had many hunting dogs and because of their success, we got puppies and sold those to other people. My family did not want to sell dogs to just random person so we connected little bit with buyers, so we could be sure that new home is good for the dog or dogs. One of these people was diver, who also loved hunting and seemed like perfect home for Peppi, this dog he seemed to like. Most times we stayed in touch with these dog buyer in first year or so just to check out and help if needed. After couple of years we got call that this man died in cave diving accident and none of his relatives could not take Peppi, so we went and took dog back. And today my parent still have this same dog. Also I love your content MrBallen it is the best and you tell these stories so well that I just have to watch more and more. I would love also to see more of these stories that take place in the EU, because it is easier to connect with videos that are "close" to me.
Thankyou for the info, Aleksi. It's really beautiful that your parents were able to take Peppi back, though it's sad no relatives could take him. Glad Peppi has your parents ☮️
Why do people have to talk talk talk? I don’t care about the dogs. It’s irrelevant to the story. The subject is the DIVER and that’s where the focus should be.
@@electrictroy2010 I loved the story and enjoy the way Finnish people write / talk. If you don’t want to read a long comment, just don’t. There’s no need to be rude or try to “teach” other people to comment in ways YOU personally find appealing. Get over your main character syndrome.
The bravery of the three surviving divers is to be highly commended. Recovering the bodies of their friends must have been not only difficult but terrifying and heartbreaking.
Well he got like 5 things wrong about it in the space of 3 minutes, so I don't think that's true. The most glaring of which was this tired, silly trope of "You can't know which of these identical paths is the correct one! OH NO!" Yes, you can, because you have a permanent rope line with arrows telling you precisely which one is the correct path... and if there is no rope line, which pretty much always means it hasn't been explored yet, you would never ever be there doing a traverse. By definition, of course, because if it hadn't been explored, nobody would even know there WAS a traverse, lol. How can you go out to do a traverse that nobody knows exists? You can't. And if they do know it exists, it means there's a rope line in there, and you shouldn't ever get confused about the correct path.
This series made me realize 2 things: humans don't belong underwater and humans don't belong in caves Edit: Yes I know about cavemen, here I'm referring to deep caves, not shallow shelters of rock
There's a true story movie about a caver who died in a cave. He got stuck in a small space upside down which is really bad apparently. They tried to save him but they couldn't get him out. Might not've been underwater but it was still a horrible way to die.
fuckin terrifying. at least to me it is. never ever have I given 2 thoughts about diving. watching this now I feel like Im there myself and start to wig the fuck out. Hate the thought of this shit but for some reason feel the need to watch another dive video.
Don’t seal SDV teams sometimes have to live out of/sleep in the torpedo tubes of submarines for a week or two at a time so they can do saturation dives? Now THAT is a tight space. I think I remember Marcus Lutrell talking about it once in an interview. It blew my mind and freaked me out.
as a new free diver , that Norway cave diving got me in a panic attack while Mr. Ballen was narrating. I didn't noticed that I wasn't breathing as well. Makes me rethink my recreational activity choices.
I refuse to free dive. I dive but you're just nuts. I have a good friend from Belize that was free diving 60ft when he was like 12. It just how he grew up. He's clinically insane lmao. Get the gear, you can stay down longer!!
In my experience, NOT breathing while free diving is actually very beneficial. Anyway those cave divers were breaking almost every rule of cave diving from the story described, so you shouldn't let it put you off. Just make sure you actually get certified and unlike them, follow all the rules, and you wouldn't be in anywhere near of as bad of a situation as them

Returning for the bodies seems like such a crazy thing to do. I respect it, though. Never leave a man behind. I am sure it helped only going down the exit, but still. Can't even imagine it.
Yeah they probably done it for that reason and to give their families closure.. Respect
Often people don't return for bodies in underwater caves or on tall mountains like Mt Everest. It's simply too hard. Often, retrieving bodies only creates more bodies.

Facts... I think I would do the same.
EDITOR: “I knew the diver. We sold him one of our puppies, but sadly he passed-away, so we retook possession of the dog.” (Direct and to the point.)

I could cave dive, but definitely not in tight spots. Getting caught is too risky (as happened with the diver that got trapped)

Yeah but he's a trained seal, so... makes sense he wants to inform people not to take unnecessary risks
This series made me realize 2 things: humans don't belong underwater and humans don't belong in caves

Dude I can’t imaginen the emotions the first survivor had when he saw that 2 other divers made it out successfully but also the emotions he had when he found out a second friend of his had also died
I think Mr ballen is the best story teller and I just won’t get bored hearing these story’s😊
The amount of anxiety this video gave me... I couldn’t stop watching though.

Some of the stories this guy tells actually get my heart racing as if I were in the situation myself.
I remember my Russian teacher once telling us about a fisherman who had discovered an island in the middle of nowhere which was full of handicapped people shipped off and hidden out of sight to avoid giving Russia a bad image. After telling us everything, she revealed the fisherman was her father o_o

@@preg13 I love water, I love to swim, I love caving. But the thought of being underwater too deep to survive if anything goes wrong with me or the equipment, and worse, being underwater inside a cave, nope, a huge nope.
It’s really useful having a navy seal explain the second extremely sad loss of life in a way that you can actually understand as to what should’ve happened and what couldn’t and didn’t happen in detail.
Pretty fascinating in a strange way
I have learned so much about different places and things from MrBallen. The storytelling keeps you captivated, and makes the learning so interesting. I have learned: 1> Don't do adventures alone. 2. If there's a warning anywhere, don't go. 3. Don't talk to strangers when traveling abroad. 4> If you're in a group, don't split up.
Amazing to have first hand, working knowledge about the rebreather. For us laymen types, that kind of explanation is a valuable part of the story.
Except that he was completely wrong about breathing pure oxygen.
@@edwinov If you breathe air with a much higher than normal O2 concentration, the oxygen in the lungs overwhelms the blood's ability to carry it away. You die. What part of his explanation was wrong?
@@obscurazone He said he was breathing pure oxygen (=100% oxygen, no nitrogen, nothing else, just oxygen). At a partial oxygen pressure of 1.4 bar oxygen is toxic. This means that pure oxygen would become lethal at a depth of 4 meters. This is why Nitrox divers for example set the oxygen percentage of their mixture (eg 30%) beforehand, depending on the maximum depth of their dive. NO diver ever breaths pure oxygen, in contrast to what the narrator says.
@@edwinov He didn't say that at all. He was explaining how a re-breather system works, whereby your own exhaled air mix is scrubbed on a cycle and mixed with pure oxygen on a loop. Which is ok for a limited period, but will poison you eventually as theres only so many times the air can be "re-breathed" and mixed with the pure oxygen.
@@obscurazone 10:20 : "So you have a continuous cycle where you're just breathing pure oxygen". Don't ever try to correct me again you scoundrel! I know my facts.
Your kids are pretty lucky to have such an awesome dad.
I had an old school Frogman Dad, he scared us shit less everytime he could. My mom wouldn't even get in a boat with him! Good times, when I was 3 he'd put me on his long board and when he caught a wave haul me on his shoulders. You had to have nerves of steel to hang with him....my brother became an alcoholic and drug addiction, I became a technical rock and ice climber...your basic adrenaline junky. Scary ExNavy Dads! You never know how the kids will turn out...
Agreed!!
I bet his parents are proud to. Be like MrBallen.
I have SO much respect and admiration for the 3 divers who went back to bring their friends home. Survivors guilt is absolutely capable of ruining, even ending, someone's life and I (unfortunately) can relate to their primal instincts and need to bring some kind of closure to that chapter of their lives as well as the lost diver's families. What incredible human beings.
It’s crazy how the last story of Nazino island isn’t talked about in history class
@Tenacious D Lee Should be a lesson to humanity about how far things can go when Marxism is spread under the guise of benevolence, "rich vs poor" "poor people are poor because of the rich" mindset which is exactly what happened giving power up to that government to do something about it but its a lie and once they gave up their rights all hell broke lose via "rich farmers" thrown to the Gulags but then everyone starved because they where rich because they where competent not because they stole from the poor. The Ukrainian Famine, and estimated 50 million people died under Stalins communism and more under Moa's reign in the same time period and same with Hilter, and every.single.time. communism has been put into practice.
Read The Gulag Archipelago at your own peril, you have been warned.

My dad: if you go up too fast you explode
Gotta love parents

Keep watching. He talks about a guy exploding because of the decompression.
This is why you don't trust perfect strangers. That Arihano guy may have seemed like a decent person, but even serial killers can appear normal to their neighbours. You don't ask some random strange guy you just met if he wants to guide you through the wilderness in a place you know absolutely nothing about. Might as well walk down the streets of The Bronx in the middle of the night with $1000 in your hand and a bunch of bling around your neck. Same level of stupidity.
Girls thought Ted Bundy was charming.
To be fair in the Bronx being that naive at best the person would just get robbed and slightly beaten but not eaten like the overly trusting explorer.

Some of these people are on a death mission, especially when the signs say do not enter.
First time listening; amazing story teller; great cadence and doesn't drag out the narrative, yet he makes sure the important aspects of the story aren't left out.
As horrible as the diving situation was I think that's amazing they went back down to get the two bodies. Suppose they had to so they could move on.
I need some more of these videos in my current life please! It's been so long I feel since we've had a 3 places you can't go...
You're a good story teller, man. Randomly stumbled across this and I'm a fan now.
The second story is sad but quite touching that they later made the treacherous journey to retrieve their dead friends. “No friends left behind”
There is a documentary here on YT about it,& it’s fascinatingly beautiful

Ya know…I’ve learned a lot about diving from this channel. One thing I’ve learned is to just not do it.
Never would’ve thought i am a fan of the strange, dark AND mysterious delivered in story format 3 to 4 times a week
Since I discovered this channel, I haven't watched anything else; even when MrBallen tells a story I'm familiar with, I watch it anyway because he's such a fantastic storyteller! I'm Canadian but I can appreciate that MrBallen was a U.S. Navy SEAL; thank you for your service, sir, the SEALS are awesome!
I agree. He’s very talented with telling stories. I’m addicted to his channel. I first found it back in March about the Texas cat lady who got stuck and died in her attic after the floor caved in.
I am a teacher/tutor for varsity tutors and I do a lot of pressure volume based problems of coarse; I had no idea you were a navy seal and for the longest time I could not figure out exactly what you were to obtain from what I called "hard earned commonsense" .Its very noble to obtain such a visceral and reflective form of brain power. I'm impressed man and thankful my dude. You guys are like the guardians of the sea man. I'm petrified of it, but its so fascinating and begs to be understood and surviveed in the safest possible way and above all respected like any great foe.
My total respect for these 3 Finnish divers for retrieving their friends' bodies from there.
