Cave diving just seems to be a generally terrible idea...
It is. There is a cave/underground river system in trinidad where 2 youbg also died deep inside. It is an awful idea to explore these areas
I'm under the impression that cave-diving can be relatively safe when it's least somewhat open and straight-forward paths, not labyrinths and shit.
Cave diving, scuba diving, any kind of diving seems to be a bad idea tbh
@@Carpatouille : cave "diving" is really just walking around in tunnels and stuff. It's pretty safe if only going into mapped tunnels and taking other proper precautions. Not like deep water cave dives, where one little problem can get you killed.

Which these guys absolutely did not do (It may have been an old enough story there weren't all those rules yet, I'm not sure. Regardless, nowadays it's not that dangerous). The stairway to heaven is one of my favorite trails and being a native Hawaiian we go hunting over there all the time. My dad was a guard over-there and he had countless stories of people who actually live there, they are bush people and are like animals, literally “mutating humans.” My dad had encountered them many times and said that the language they spoke was not Hawaiian, it was like inaudible groans and noises. Very aggressive people and are most likely people who grew up in the wilderness of those valleys and live off the land like my ancestors. The cave diving community REALLY needs to get in the habit of SEALING OFF FALSE EXITS.
Yeah or obstructing it. Honestly, even a lazy person can dive down and jam a couple towels in there or something. A sign, an "X" of 2x metal bars that are drilled to cover that hole, anything.. hell, a rope that goes up the right exit.. literally just drop a rope with a weight attached down the entrance if you are lazy and don't want to guide it yourself.
Or just marking dead end tunnels right at then entrance of them
@@pseudophp lmao 1 of the biggest 5 rules of cave diving is ur always supposed to have a rope so that u don’t ever find ur self going out a false exit the people that do that r typically not trained cave divers and that is where almost all cave related diving deaths come from

The stairway hike is dangerous, but only if it’s rainy or really windy. David was out on a clear day with decent wind conditions. I’ve done that hike a few times with my Marine buddies while I was stationed on O’ahu, and it’s very unlikely he would have fallen or slipped on a day like that. Not to mention the fact they never found a body, and he was hiking alone. Also, there’s no reason for anyone to be in those trees, no other trails are NEAR that close to the stairway trail, and he does look like he’s crouching. I’ve heard many stories of single’s and couple’s “disappearing” during night hikes on O’ahu. I’ve also heard there is a group of very resentful locals who kidnap and murder tourists because they don’t like tourists or outsiders. Some locals have very strong opinions about this stuff, but don’t let this scare you away, most of the locals are amazing kind warm-hearted people, these are just some rumors I had heard during my service.
he was certainly abducted. they didnt find anything
Ha a friend who lived there a few years. He woke up in the middle of the night (his house was in the hills, middle of nowhere, on stilts) and there were people on the roof with machetes and they were swinging machetes down at him. He hid and left the next day.
There was a guy leaving comments here saying his dad was a guard at the stairway and there were wild people in the area that live off the land

The Bouvet Island boat mystery has been conclusively solved - it was abandoned by a Russian expedition to the island a few years before. They had taken a couple of boats to the beach, returned with one. As the weather worsened, they retrieved their team with their helicopter, leaving the second boat behind. Apparently there was no way they could safely get the boat with its crew safely back to the ship through the surf.

Am I the only one getting angry with these people losing their lives from squeezing in place that you can't get out of. Its not like they had any evidence of anyone making it. Jeez!!! Man is not made to exist in water and narrow caves! This stuf is breaking my heart!
I’ll never understand why people want to risk their lives to go in these caves where you can’t even see anything. As a previous poster said the cave diving community needs to seal off these false exits.
You can absolutely see things. That comment only pertained to a single room of a specific cave. Not all cave diving in general. It's probably not even true anyway, I believe that happened quite awhile ago and techniques have improved since then for kicking in ways that don't pull up silt. Some places it's still unavoidable, but like 95% of the time you can see just fine if you have good technique. There is also no reason to seal off false exits, because you ALWAYS follow a rope line, and the line has the direction to the true exit on arrows tied into it regularly. It is not possible to end up in a false exit unknowingly if you follow the required certification training and rules. Meanwhile, people sometimes WANT to go into false exists to see them, and sealing them off would prevent that. But when you go in, you again have a rope line, with the arrows pointing BACK out to the real exit, so you cannot get confused if you follow the rules.
I want to believe that “all” he saw in that 4th chamber was the bodies of those previously deceased in that chamber. Imagine there’s something living in there

I've gone up haiku stairs many times, its not dangerous. I used to hike or trail run alone all over on the mountains in Oahu until more and more often i'd be running or hiking and out of nowhere a men would pop up and some looked mentally ill or like they live in the woods. None of them attacked me ever but it was scary.
The Stairs were open for the longest time, so popular that dozens of day hikers would be on the trail/stairs with you and the sketchy parts were easily tackled by watching a fellow hiker navigate a gap in the stairs or with careful hiking if no one was around… The county closed the stairs to repair them then briefly re-opened them then closed them permanently… the county also did this with another high risk, high land slide area on Oahu, the sacred falls.

I've done the stairway 4 times, every time there were many others on the path. I think it unlikely someone would have abducted him, though it is possible he fell. There are 2 places where ropes are used instead on a ladder to get to the next ladder segment. Cost too much to do searches especially knowing they’re most likely dead and putting themselves at high risk
They would still go despite warnings and common sense

"... and to this day, they never found the body."
Without people making stupid decisions then we wouldn't know 🙂that such stuff is dangerous

I live within walking distance of Jacob’s well, and I remember going down there when I was younger before it was a tourist attraction. One day we were there when a diver went down, and all of a sudden my mom told me to go home. I didn’t know that he had died down there until years later. Such a sad and scary place
How did she know?
It's a sad and scary place, and at the same time a beautiful and incredibly fun place. Crazy world we live in.
@@goldiloks08 probably just that he’d been down there too long
Within WALKING distance?? So what’s the deal? People do swimming and mild diving regularly but nobody goes real deep? Have there been any other incidents?

Can you imagine being stuck on the most miserable, remote island in the world and somehow missing the one shot you have at being rescued? God, I’m so curious. Did they keep to themselves intentionally, or having the devastating experience of waking up to the sound if the helicopter flying away?
dont worry, it was just a random boat washed up, than being taken away by the next storm. who gets over there on a boat? that was a retarded story
I’m partial traumatized by your stories on a daily basis but I can not stop watching them!!
that last story is so sad. they shouldn’t have risked going to a sealed off area at all, but it makes me wonder so badly what richard saw that made him peel out of there so quickly without his equipment. if he just let go of the tank you think he would’ve tried his hardest to get it instead of just letting it go. it makes me wonder if there were bodies/bones in the way of the tight space. or if it was something worse... sadly we’ll never know. huge shout out to his friend for immediately sharing his air and trying to save him. if only they wouldn’t have went up the wrong way, then they both could’ve lived. but it’s an easy mistake ESPECIALLY in super stressful situations.. that’s what people don’t understand. they like to talk shit from the comfort of their couch saying they’d do this and they’d do that, but the truth is, there is NO guarantee on what you would do in these situations and you’ll never know unless it happens to you. the body and mind does some really fucked up things in times of stress and danger. not to mention all of the added weirdness that being deep underwater already does to you.
I thought that maybe he was spooked by seeing the divers that had died in there long ago and were never retrieved because of the narrow entrance to chamber 4. Can't imagine what he must've felt down there and am just terribly sorry for the both of them (one lost his life in a horrible way, the other his best buddy).
They should seal off the wrong way!
I'm thinking there was probably at least one body right near the exit but not in it, since you have to wriggle out of it, he'd have to have gotten through and turned around. I'm thinking he saw something and was surprised or startled, dropped the tank, and maybe it's one of those dark bottomless pits, so he panicked and now he's panicking even more trying to squeeze through this hole, that far down, without any air, knowing that if his friend wasn't there or didn't take action fast enough to share air he'd be dead.
I know what I would do, I wouldn't go cave diving in the first place. I'm a land kinda gal.

I'm a Divemaster and I have no interest in caves. What do you expect to see in a cave? It's not like climbing a mountain where there is a payoff of a grand view at the end. And they were "just in an advanced class." That means they didn't even have cave diving training and certifications; which is a separate certification . People should not dive enclosures unless you know what you're doing. Anyone reading this and is foolish enough to try this, at least carry a line of rope tied to the entrance so you can navigate yourself out.
Amen. As an certified *not* master diver and t is my fervent wish to NOT die in a cave!
That’s really fucking smart
@@nobleassassin115 Thanks, but I can't take credit. That's standard practice for cave diving. These guys didn't die because of one mistake, they made a series of mistakes. They weren't trained, they didn't monitor their air, you usually carry three flashlights, and multiple airtanks, they didn't plan their dive properly.

your diving stories always get me... the thought of people exploring these claustrophobic flooded tombs humans were never meant to see the inside of, and something going wrong, is terrifying. It's crazy to think about how we live on land and breathe air and being underwater is like a completely different world we aren't adapted to survive in.
Heyyyyyy Mr Ballen, love your videos and your podcasts, just one correction from an experienced diver here :). I’ve noticed you mention in a few scuba diving stories that when one diver is out of air, the other “takes his mouthpiece out” to begin “buddy breathing” switching back and forth. Actually that is not how it’s done. Every diver has a 2nd “alternate” regulator meant for that exact purpose, so the rescue diver would keep their mouthpiece in, and give the person in need of air their alternate regulator, so they are both breathing out of the same tank. Obviously the air doesn’t last as long, but in no scenario (at least that I’m aware of) would a diver ever remove their own regulator to “switch off” with another diver.

The guy that managed to swim out on a breath hold is actually insane. Being in a panicked situation like that and having to swim as quick as you can, idk how he actually made it.
A breath doesn't consume all the oxygen that you hold, that pressure feeling in your lungs when you hold your breath is actually your body scrubbing co2 out of your bloodstream and taking some o2 back in. Co2 is bigger than o2 so the pressure in your lungs increases. The trick is to exhale just a tiny bit to offset that pressure increase and you can hold your breath for much longer because that screaming pain in your lungs asking for air doesn't happen, at least quite that way. Still fucking insane and I probably wouldn't have made it in that situation.
And without getting 'the bends'.
@@suzannenichols6900 he didnt get the bends because he wasnt deep enough for nitrogen to get released in his bloodstream

@@sa-amirel-hayeed699 If this is true, I've been doing this since I was a little kid without even knowing it was a "trick". Practicing holding your breath under water and letting out just a bit of air at a time.
