As a Canadian from British Columbia, who grew up camping around grizzly bears, I was shocked by the levels of irresponsibility when I visited Yellowstone park. Since then, I've never been surprised when I've read about hubris killing a tourist in Yellowstone park.
I didn’t grow up in grizzly territory but I’m in Canada where there are black bears. Many tourists are careless with their food, food waste and garbage. Especially new campers. Best place to see bears isn’t in the backcountry, it’s actually in car camping/family camping areas, or along the road near these campgrounds. Food/garbage management would solve this problem. If people are as reckless in grizzly territory it’s terrifying.

Liv Miles, go ahead and try a scuba dive...in a pool. I did that, more years ago than I care to admit, and the experience of breathing underwater is truly amazing. There's no way I'd want to dive in the wild, though.
From the accounts I've heard on survivors shock is instant especially when they get your neck and paralyze you, and we basically "detach" from our bodies to make it less traumatic. It's some crazy natural defense against these horrific events.
Read up on what happened to Timothy Treadwell, aka Grizzly Man, back in 2003 when the nutjob got himself and his girlfriend eaten alive by a grizzly while their camera was recording the audio. It's neither quick nor painless.
Thats what i was thinking too. Had that happened here in America, they wouldn't have done crap. Water company here would have lawyered up and freed themselves of any liability and done nothing for the victims families.
I took a scuba safety course once on a tour at the great barrier reef and it was about 15 minutes long and we never went in the water. I decided against going for that reason. A friend went and then accidentally lost the mouth piece and started panicking and the tour guide had to bring them back up out of the water. Things go from 0 to 100 real quick under deep water and u cant account for all of it.
I went through a similar experience. I had never been scuba diving and a guy I was dating at the time signed us up for a beginner-level scuba tour in the Outer Great Barrier Reef. I went through the quick safety brief and then we all went down after being cleared, but I was feeling a lot of anxiety with breathing through the tanks and no matter what I did, my sinuses were not equalizing properly. So my gut told me to not proceed. I told the scuba tour guide I wanted to go up right before they were about to start. I decided to snorkel instead. When the group came back, one of the girls had gotten tired and the guide had to carry her while completing the tour. Every now and then, part of me wonders if I should've just pushed through my anxiety since it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but my gut instincts told me I was not ready that day. So ultimately, I don't regret it.
Omg. I had no idea they let inexperienced people dive. I went to a weeks long course to become dive certified before I ever considered going for a real recreational dive, even a touristy one.

Here in Japan, there's a town named after the famous whirlpools that form with the tides: Naruto. Initially I went there because I was a fan of the anime of the same name, but I was surprised to find out that you can actually take a boat ride on these whirlpools. I watched from near the bridge as a couple of boats kept entering and riding the whirlpool currents. I was quite content to just watch with my feet firmly on the land.
I think a big deal is when they form under roads or other similarly hard material so can look like solid ground until something passes over them. I drove past a truck halfway in a sinkhole in the oncoming lane on a major highway once. It was in the process of being rescued so I didn't get involved.

In the late 60’s and early 70’s, our family spent 4 weeks each summer camping and fly fishing in Yellowstone National Park. My first (and hopefully last) close up encounter with grizzlies occurred during a day hike to Pelican Creek when I was about 10 years old. The trail meandered through meadow and forest and my mom was in the lead with me close behind. Suddenly she froze, turned to the rest of the group and said one word. BEAR! We all stepped off trail and froze with our backs to trees as a mother and her two cubs came crashing through the woods and passed 20 feet away from us. Shaken but safe, we continued hiking and I landed my first 18” trout. Thanks for reviving this memory from 50 years ago!

I've been binge watching these videos for the past few days and as a New Zealander I can't believe NZ made it to the strange, dark and mysterious told in story format!
That got my attention, too. One of the first things you learn as a camper is to get the food way up and out of reach. Poor girl probably didn't realize how freaking tall a grizzly is when it stands on its hind legs. In all fairness, I don't know whether having other campers with her would have saved her. Grizzly might have had an even bigger smorgasboad of idiot meat.
Ikr... Don't worry I'm an expert, I've got a survival book in my backpack, wear headphones in the middle of the wilderness while I'm by myself and don't carry a gun into grizzly country.

Can we all just agree that if the rangers, who are professionals and know the area the best, say its a bad idea... that we listen and follow their advice!
If a Ranger says something I follow it to a fucking TEE. I once asked about swimming in the river at a campsite and they said "No that's a really bad idea, In theory you could sit by the shore but the currents can sweep you away and we can't do anything about it" And I never even got close to the river my whole stay.
Always bring bear spray. It works on bears, coyotes, humans, and any living being. But for an "experience" camper, she made a lot of mistakes and was even learning how to camp on the go. People need to know their limits and how to not only be honest with others but mostly with themselves.
This right here. Bear spray is actually considered more effective than a gun at deterring bears, because an injured bear is more likely to fight believing it has no other choice rather than run away, whereas a bear that gets a faceful of bear spray is going to have its senses temporarily disabled so it retreats rather than possibly get more injured. Still better to have a gun than nothing, but either way, always bring bear spray.
She was probably an experienced camper in Switzerland, Germany etc. We don't have bears, mountain lions, coyotes here though and only recently wolves have returned and they are very unlikely to attack you.
@@phangirlable We do have bears in the Alps. Just a few months ago a young man in Italy was killed by a bear. And some years ago a bear was shot in Bavaria. One thing I’ve learned watching MrBallen for awhile it doesn’t matter where you go or what you do, death is lurking in the shadows relentlessly hunting you!💀
Love this channel simply because he tells a story in a concise and straightforward way. No messing about all the interesting bits told in a way that keeps you really interested right until the end. A lot of channels could learn from this approach. And the stories are really interesting too with a lot I have never even heard about.
I really can appreciate the amount of research this man puts in to draw a more colourful picture and make it so much more entertaining for us the viewers. As a student at university I can serve as witness to how difficult it is to do proper research and find all the little hidden details scattered through dozens of different articles.
Mr. Ballen, idk how you do it, but you’re the best storyteller that I’ve come across on RUclips, and somehow have watched almost all of your videos; I started watching in mid September. Love the videos so much that I listen to them on auto play while playing games. I have genuinely gotten spooked by a few stories.
I used to work for a police department with a dive team. The one thing I learned from them was: Diving is cool. But, when things go wrong they go suddenly, hideously, and fatally wrong. When I would ask them if I could go out on the boats with them they would say: "Are you crazy!? Get back to your desk where you belong, you nutjob!" Sound advice.
Total pro. Doesn't string up her food high enough and listens to music on headphones so as to not hear anything around her. Brigitta apparently is foreign for "bear food"
Surprisingly, bears can climb faster than they can run. I stg I wouldn't believe the statement had I not seen a video of a spooked bear running 20ft up a tree in within a couple seconds. Or maybe bear just tall lol.
@@yoshitheonly Yeah, they're excellent climbers AND they get more aggressive/bold when they're climbing up a tree. That doesn't really help them get to food that is properly strung up. You don't tie it directly to a tree trunk after all. It's basically mid-air, and bears aren't smart enough to deal with ropes etc.
I watched a 10-year-old kid and his mom almost die in a whirlpool on the American River in 2010. It was one of the most terrifying things I'd ever witnessed. Luckily they were okay just really shaken up
My sister and I almost drowned in the sandy river in Oregon. We were walking into the river and there was a drop off we didn't know about. I don’t understand how a person can look at the entire vast ocean and think to themselves “I’ll go diving in this one little area that has a good chance of killing me”
Getting trapped in water is terrifying. I learned this first hand when I was younger (maybe around 10) when I was swimming in Lake Michigan. It wasn't a bad day and there was quite a few people around but I still got stuck in a rip current. It wasn't a strong rip current in general (but I was young and weak) nor was I out too deep and was in a spot where I could just touch the bottom but I could not move forward at all nor did I know how to get out of a rip current. Even with so many people around I was struggling and failing to try to get out of it for a minute or two. Luckily my sister (who brought me to the beach) got me out of it. Without her seeing me, I'm not sure what would have happened. Please people, if you are at the beach be observant! Even if its a nice day and you don't feel any current that doesn't mean there isn't one just a few feet from you that someone may be struggling with.
I live near the Delaware river near the tristate area. Almost every summer at least one person drowns because of the string currents underneath that are not visible. It looks calm on the top but it is quite deceiving. It's usually people not from the area that it happens to.
Folks always seem to underestimate the Great Lakes. My friend almost drowned one day after my senior year of high school. Luckily, he was able to get back to land.
I remember traveling to Panama with my family when I was a kid, the beach we went to was known for having large waves during a storm and for some reason we decided to visit the beach during the night and it wasn’t storming too bad but the waves were terribly rough and big. So my mom grabbed me and my brother and decided to go in for a bit and as soon as we got in we were all fine swimming and keeping our head up but I was quite small at the time, I’m 21 and 4’11 so I can’t imagine how small at that time.. but all I knew was that I was getting dragged all around, the waves kept taking me away from my mom and brother and dragging me under, I would be underneath the water caught in a wave for what felt like a minute, I just remember not being able to get out of this vicious cycle and just accepting that I was going to drown that day. I managed to cry out that I was struggling but my mom brushed it off and told me to swim back… which I did after nearly drowning

Camping, alone, Yellowstone, I knew from the start she was gonna meet a bear. It's a really rare occurrence, but people sleeping alone in griz country is also pretty rare. They're opportunistic.. if they're hungry and they find a nice singular human still in the packaging, they're probably gonna at least check the flavor of it
Bears are terrifying. There’s a case where a girl was attacked by a bear and called her mother as the bear was eating her. I just couldn’t imagine the horror for both sides of that call. 1 getting eaten alive is obviously horrible but I think having to hear your child be eaten over the phone knowing there’s nothing you can do must be a whole different horror in itself.
I’d probably kill myself after. I have two kids & know I wouldn’t be able to live if I were that mother. Or I’d sink into such a depression, it would consume me. That is the most horrific thing. 😢

Even if I occasionally know about a story, I still like to listen to John's version, and I always learn from him. Of course, there are many stories which are unbeknownst to me.

I had a similar experience in Lake Michigan as well! Near death experience twinsies

I am addicted to your videos. Well done John, you are a legend
Him and the like button have a complicated relationship 😂
I still don’t understand what the point of the like button comments are
@@Tootsymcison still doesn’t answer my question 🤣
@@shivareeherbert838 It's basically just a joke about how RUclipsrs all say "SMASH THAT LIKE BUTTON", except he takes it to as many extremes as he can, lol
@@ChrisKola oh okay aha thank you.
Hes def got issues with the like button lol !
This guy is a Lengend man I’m always looking forward to watching your videos mr.ballen you should have millions of views and a million subscribers man one of the best you tubers on you tube with out a doubt
Thank you so much!
Agreed
6:04 loving the very subtle shade of air quotes around "dive master" from this former Navy SEAL
For about four years I have had a gift certificate to get fully scuba certified. I have always been scared to go scuba diving because I have a slight fear of deep water and fish larger than me but this channel has showed me those are the LEAST of what I would need to worry about. I think it’s safe to say I won’t be getting certified anytime soon.
One day this man appears then you binge watch 2 days worth of content, can’t be the only one
Yes!!!! Ha ha hasaa
Me here...🤗
He appeared in my feed yesterday evening.... Its now 2pm the following day and I can't stop watching 😂
Called out lol
Have binge watched these all weekend and still at it… even when it is a story I know/have heard of before you still find a way to keep me interested and I often learn something I hadn’t known beforehand. You are quite easy to listen to and something about being able to see you tell the story makes it a bit more intimate (compared to other typical “list” style channels that I have mostly become burnt out on). Thanks for all the content, keep up the great work!
What I’ve learned from binge watching these videos is that I, not good in outdoorsy, claustrophobic areas, or “panic “ inducing situations, should stay inside and continue watching these videos and not doing exciting yet deadly things hahah 😅
I’m completely addicted to getting disturbed by theses videos!
So grateful for you starting/maintaining this channel ❤️ thank you
I can honestly say I am addicted to the strange, dark, and mysterious delivered in story format.
A few years ago we had a 10 metre sink hole appear near the traffic lights on a busy road in the Gold Coast Australia. I think it had more to do with ageing infrastructure though.
It took a few days to fix.
'Glad to see you feature the rare sinkhole occurrence. So many comments regarding never going into the wilderness, caves, deep diving and staying safe at home... with just enough human influence, nature can and will find a way. No one is truly 100% safe anywhere. We can only do our best to educate ourselves and thank our lucky stars that scenarios like those unfortunate two men are incredibly rare.
Like the guy who was sleeping in his bed in a house when a sinkhole opened up under him. His body was never found.
Premier time. Love it. Hope your daughter is recovering quickly from her tonsillectomy 😊
Look at Mr. Ballen with his diving knowledge and terms!! Navy seal for life!!!
Finally using my SOLAS knowledge lmao
I wish i had that knowledge! But still i wouldn't scuba dive tho. Its just fascinating.
A lot of people are saying the camper was suicidal, but honestly I think it was a mix of hubris & naïveté.
I haven’t watched the video yet but what does that mean?
@@joetroy2904 Hubris is basically pride or ego - overestimating your abilities; naïveté is being less than fully aware of a situation or how likely a situation is to occur. OP is speculating that the camper did not choose to camp there to intentionally take their life (via bear attack) or even want to die, but a combination of underestimating the danger and its likelihood, and overestimating their ability, resulted in her taking a risk she might not have had she realised the reality of the situation. It clearly resulted in her death.
I mean it seemed like she did know what she was doing like stringing up the food and stuff but I mean wearing headphones to sleep?? And I mean carry a gun or at least some bear mace or something, even if your with multiple people
@My names Jeff they are. they're. Idiot.
Maybe even bofa
