@@_MjG_ no, not when you kill yourself, then it's just reckless.
Adventurousness is still guided by common sense. Recklessness sees and disregards probable dangers.

As a Native Hawaiian, my best advice to tourist would be just because you see locals doing something, doesn’t mean it’s a good idea to do it too. BUT if you don’t see any locals doing something, it’s in your best interest to follow our example. Hālona Blowhole is along the strongest current in all of Hawaii, the Kaʻiwi Channel, and is next to Sandy’s Beach, known for having the most broken neck and back injuries in the nation! You will see many of us locals (born and raised in these waters) surfing/bodysurfing at Sandy’s, but unless you have experience, do NOT go in! However, you will not catch locals near the blowhole period! For what reason anyway? That in itself should say something. But if you decide to break past the barriers of places you shouldn’t be and end up hurt or worse, do NOT come here and try to shutdown these places because YOU fucked up as a VISITOR 💯. Next time come correct with respect for the places you’re visiting or no come at all.

He was his own protagonist.
“Tilikum was not punished” me: Good.😤
Being in captivity punishment enough tbh
Yeah that's what I thought too.. these animals are treated like crap.
Tilikum was punished years later because it killed another trainer and in almost the same manner. He had become pretty grumpy from being captivity and I do not blame the boy.
He could do a whole list on just Tilikum, I think he got three kills before they retired him
You all need to watch Blackfish. Tilikum was a ticking time bomb but not of his own doing.
The idea of petitioning to add a cover to the Blowhole... Fences, signs, they took every precaution. His death was tragic and undeserving, but it was an arrogant choice that led to his brutal fate.
No, it was deserved
Right? At some point humans need to be accountable for their own actions. We can't block off everything that's dangerous because then there would be nothing left.

I understand why the locals fought back against having a grate put over the blowhole. Not only would it wear away with time and be a constant thing to maintain, but there were signs and deterrent. Just keep on the safe side of the fence and warnings.
Exactly they ALREADU BUILT a FENCE!!! pple take no responsibility
Not to mention if the geyser blew the grate off and it injured someone...they would be whining about that. Just leave nature alone and show some respect
I'm not arguing for the metal grate, but why would it need constant maintenance??? A heavy duty stainless steal grate would last many years with zero maintenance in between replacements.
@@the2006mvp Very unlikely. It would be fastened into solid rock & the gushing air/water, would create almost no pressure on a mostly open grate. The slots could have 3.5 inch openings in between the metal, same spacing as railings. I'm not arguing for a metal grate, but I don't agree with your reply.
@@_MjG_ the Problem is salt water combined with the salt in the air, the force of the water hitting the metal, and a way of placing the gate. Sure, it will hold for a year or two, but then it would rust or deteriorate or fall off.
Story 3 illustrates that you can't save reckless people from themselves no matter what precautions you put in place. Put a grid over that blowhole and Daniel would have found another dangerous activity to endanger himself with.

@@Merik2013 Reckless and adventurous are not the same. This guy was reckless.
I was 18 when a friend and me, found a blowhole in the rocks that surround the beaches of Loret de Mar in Spain. It wasn't nearly as huge as the one in the vid , stil it looked dangerous as hell. There were no signs or fences, but anyone with a functioning head on their shoulders could see that you have to be very carefull . Anyhow i loved the raw force it radiated, and enjoyed the spray of seawater ( the temperature was between 35 and 42C. ). Wat a fool one has to be to even want to stand on the edge or wanting to get hit in the chest by it!
Even if he wouldn’t have been sucked in, the force of the water could have crushed his ribs. That’s reckless.
“I want to feel the water smash into my chest”. Why Daniel? Why do you want that? You could have so many better desires.
Show off to the girl what else?
if only he was a coomer , he would still be alive although maybe that was his downfall , trying to impress the girls
@@chunchoe maybe he coomed when the water hit him. The ultimate coom.
@Sean Macguire we live we coom we live again.
Let the girls grab buckets and let them splash water at you. That's a better and safer desire.
I've seen some of Hawaii's blowholes in person. The sound of the water rushing through and the violent power of the spray that got pushed out was more than enough to make me afraid of getting too close to the edge. Not only for fear of drowning, but because lava rock is incredibly sharp and jagged, and being slammed into it with that much force was honestly the scarier option to me.
You are the only person that has given extra details about the Seaworld incident. And I have never heard anyone else say that he had gone there before. Your stories are so much better. Also it is impossible that they did not have any footage of the guy. Seaworld workers said that there’s cameras everywhere in the park and underwater, plus there is a person there All of the time. I think that they just magically made all of the photos disappear
There is A documentary about it… BLACKFISH
@@proud-momblackfish is about the trainer death and Tilikum’s life in general. They only briefly mention David’s incident.
SeaWorld Orlando has people observing the orcas for 22 out of 24 hrs a day (source: I applied for the internship) but it’s very possible someone could try to sneak in and climb into the tank, especially after Free Willy showed the kid falling in the tank after-hours and the whale saving him, and gave people a false sense of safety.
Daniel jumps into pool
Killer whale: so you have chosen playtime
Funny
FYI side note: Tillicum is the orca that eventually killed the trainer a few years later.
@@trishaeverton9592 not surprised, you can't have animals boxed in like that like prisoners
LoL
LMAO
I’m astounded that anyone would suggest Tillicum should be “punished” for killing a man. He lives in what for us would be a gerbil cage, every day being tortured with the loud horrible noise from the loudspeakers which he cannot escape, and is forced to do tricks for morsels. Every moment of his life is a punishment.
Doesn’t matter now unfortunately, he’s deceased.. though I agree with you.
Harambe agrees
I’m completely against the capture and captivity of most animals for reasons of testing or enjoyment. I completely agree.
Way worse than you know,,,,,,,,,,
I could be wrong, but I think the idea would be to make sure no captive animals think they can get away with harming or killing humans. Although it's impossible for them to develop of a fear of doing so if they get put down for it.
As soon as you mentioned him jumping the seaworld fence, I knew exactly who this guy was 😪 everyone involved here was a victim. Poor Daniel and poor Tilly. Also, Tilikum wasn't punished even though that was the second of three people he would kill for the same reason SeaWorld kept him trapped and tortured in the first place - he was worth too much to "punish". He ended up dying in a tiny solitary confinement tank and SeaWorld barely suffered. Garbage human beings own that company.
They need to shut it down!!!
I've read in the comments that Tilikum actually killed two more people while he was younger. Either trainers or people who were hunting him.
If u watch the blackfish documentary it tells u all about tilikum and what sea world was doing with the orcas
me too but fascinating to know the history of Daniel. Does sound like he maybe had some mental health issues!!
Money is of course a huge factor in keeping SeaWorld operating. If nobody patronized these places, they would shut down.
The first story is interesting when you read up about Tillicum. Killer whales, despite their name, are typically gentle in nature. But being held in captivity warps their minds because of how intelligent they are. Someone had said in response to Tillicum killing, 'imagine a human being locked in a bathtub for years.' They end up self-harming, and hurting each other. The humans that come into the pool are treated like playthings. Tillicum killed three people overall, including two trainers. Experts labeled him as 'psychotic' and said that being held in captivity made that happen.
That's very sad, when you pointed that out, I actually put myself there and it was unsettling feeling , they should all be freed in the Thier own world, very very sad to know that we humans can do that to them for our own entertainment,😥
Killer whales are BRUTAL in the wild! They've been documented hunting for fun. Have you not seen the documentary that shows a school of orcas chasing a mother whale and her baby for MILES. Then pushing it down until it almost drowns, letting the mother bring it to the surface, then dragging and pushing it down again? It went on for hours until they finally killed it, ate the lower jaw and left it. They have incredibly close knit pods but they are anything but gentle
@@annefortes9345 I can understand some cases of captivity, like when they were saved from something while young and would not have survived on their own, or they have an injury that would make it almost impossible for them to survive on their own. I hate the way SeaWorld 10000% uses rescue/rehabilitation as a front whilst exploiting these creatures for money. You don't see zoologists making lions do flips and shit. They're supposed to be educational but instead they're greedy. Its disgusting.
What makes it all the worse was how they got Tilikum in the first place. He was essentially kidnapped by poachers.
Truly evil stuff.
Orcas are my favorite animal. They've never attacked a human in nature only in confinement.
Killer whales or Orcas swim hundreds of miles a day in the wild, keeping them in those tiny pools is utterly barbaric.
For real, it’s so sad to see it.
Yeah it’s like if we were kept in a treasure chest
More like solitary confinement to a jail cell for years. Which, coincidentally, is equally barbaric and inhumane.
At least they are being well fed and well kept and not being exposed to the dangers of the oceans (Hot take)
@@slickjustice7178 Nahh, some human are just disgusting.
"The problem is not the blowhole, the problem is people not respecting the power of nature" That's a very wise quote right there. We can't babyproof the whole world and disrupt nature in the process. RIP to Daniel but this was entirely his fault for his poor judgement and ignorance of the warning signs. People need to realize they're not invincible and learn that nature can be unpredictable and can kill you in an instant, and for that reason it deserves our utmost respect. You're not above the natural order, it will chew you up and spit you out if you don't respect it. Props to the locals for standing up for their landmark and not letting a grate ruin it's natural beauty.
Facts
I live on the island and see this blowhole often, there and thousands of ways to die on this island and people always push the boundaries, if we babyproofed this island it wouldn’t be beautiful. Survival of the fittest is often survival of the smartest
@@thereadingnook7121 yes exactly, I can't stand when people want to make the whole world "safe" it ruins so many good things. If you're not educated enough to know what you're doing and how to stay safe maybe you shouldn't be doing dangerous things

@@thereadingnook7121 you guys have a tendency to respect nature much more than here for sure. here it's all about cut it down and build then wonder why the flooding gets worse each year
You're damn right they did not "punish" Tilikum for Daniel's death. They knew who was at fault. My heart breaks for Tilikum's tragic life. Daniel's death was, of course, Daniel's fault for going in there, but the larger picture is that it was just the fault of people. The blame for all of the deaths related to Tilikum belongs to human beings. One hundred percent. You do not take a free-ranging apex predator who roams the oceans, rip them away from their tight-knit families as they did to Tilikum when he was just two, make him live in a bathtub, force him to perform tricks only to entertain people, and then wonder what went wrong. The captive horror that they thrust upon Tilikum for 34 years completely devastated his emotional and physical health. You could not possibly be crueler to an orca than by doing exactly what they did to Tilikum.
Aside from the amazing stories I’ve heard from MrBallen, I’ve also learned that there’s no limit to people’s stupidity and poor decision making

I lived on Maui for several years, but Mother Nature in Hawaii, especially anything to do with the ocean is super powerful and sketchy. Lots of accidents with tourist in Maui alone due to choices like that. It’s awful. Also respecting Mother Nature is very accurate to say because it’s 💯 what I’d expect the locals to say.
Maybe this makes me psychopathic but I’ve never heard a more heartwarming but simultaneously tragic story than the one about Tillicum and Daniel. From the whale’s perspective, it seems like she was lonely and just totally loved her “toy.” Yet it’s heartbreaking that Daniel’s naïveté, ignorance of the power of nature, and desire to be around the thing he loved most got in the way of understanding and accepting the deadly reality.
Calling Daniel naive is nice of you. I'd say he was an idiot whose IQ was driven further down by copious amounts of pot. Who TF tries to go near a killer whale unless the whale has known him for a VERY long time? And even then, he'd have to be extremely cautious!
Nothing about naivete over here, Daniel's entire way of life stunk of self-centeredness. He wasn't stupid nor mentally impaired and unable to process "the power of nature". No, he constantly broke laws and rules that didn't suit him. And it wasn't a defiant or rebellious streak either, as he wasn't a delinquent nor a bad person. Daniel just put his immediate wants over others and common sense.
@@nanifa6082 How do we know he wasn't mentally impaired?
Tilikum was a male orca, actually! He already had a history of aggression towards humans; before going to SeaWorld, he had drowned a teenaged trainer at another water wildlife park. After Daniel, he then went on to drown and brutalize the body of his trainer, Dawn Brancheau. I think it was less so that he saw Daniel as a toy. In captivity, Tilikum was in such a confined space, unable to play out his natural hunting instincts, and often kept in isolation because the other orcas would hurt him. There's evidence he cared about Dawn and much as she cared for him, but under those conditions, it's no wonder Tilikum continued to lash out time after time. They are intelligent, social creatures that are apex predators in the wild, and captivity literally rips away their ability to do anything that is in their nature. He should have been released back into the wild after the first trainer he killed, and then Daniel and Dawn's deaths wouldn't have happened.
If the thought "I'm just going to go ahead and put my head in this carnivore's mouth" ever occurs to you, I encourage you, very much so, to rethink that thought.
Nah, let them get that Darwin
i agree 😂
These whales are so much smarter than people! Why do you think they’re called “killer!?”
Nah let them do it, thin out the the stupid people we're over populated as it is 🤣🤣

To learn more about Tilikum, you can watch the blackfish documentary. It’s quite disturbing how they capture and place orcas in captivity. They are not meant to live like that and Tilly was especially big so the small enclosed space was that much tighter for him
If u call watching it all day, forgetting to eat, ignoring all my chores and things I really need to get done, and watching his stories over and over again, yea u could say I am hooked all right. His voice is hypnotic also.
“Tillicum wasn’t punished.” I mean he was still trapped at Seaworld for the rest of his life, but sure.

@@EpicWarrior131 pretty sure imprisonment in a cage is the definition of punishment in our society.
@@The_other_Jen What he clearly meant was that they didn't go out of their way to penalize him for the particular incident. Anything said to the contrary is pure dishonesty
The being taken from his pod, crooked dorsal fin, lifetime in captivity, being kept in the dark with older females that bullied and bloodied him constantly would seem like a horrific punishment to me.
“Tilikum was not punished.”
I’d sure hope not. Spending so much of his life and then dying in that Orca bathtub was more than enough of a punishment.
At least he's 'free' now. Corky and Lolita have been in captivity for over half a century. Lolita is from the Puget Sound Southern Resident orca population, which was decimated by captures in the sixties and seventies. They are now listed as critically endangered. Her mother, Ocean Sun, is estimated to be between eighty and ninety years old. They will probably never be reunited. Corky is a Northern Resident and member of the A-23 pod. I agree he suffered enough in that God awful fish bowl. They should have released or put tilikum down the first time he killed/injured someone, it would have saved 2 lives. Seaworld barely cares about their own workers lives though so of course they dont care about the animals they hold captive smh.
@@chimpantaco Tilikum was worth over 5 million dollars. He was too valuable to be put down. He couldn't be released. He was only 2 years old when he was captured. He wouldn't be able to hunt and provide for himself. He wouldn't be able to find his family. Most importantly, he had a variety of health issues for which he had to be medicated. Humans ruined his life and they ruined his health. His fate was sealed the moment he was captured. I feel bad for the trainers, but I feel even worse for the orcas. In the wild, orcas stay with their mothers and siblings for life. That's something Tilikum never got to experience.
@@MermaidMusings7 that's why I said released or put down, since he probably wouldn't survive outside SeaWorld. But out of mercy at the very least they could have put him down. insted they kept him in a little pool with little interaction till his death 😕. I remember the story about Daniel being on the news when it happened. I lived in Hawaii at the time my house was literally 5 minutes away from that blow hole I literally passes by it all the time. Tbh us locals had no sympathy for him because it was just an idiotic decision by Daniel to go anywhere near it. Tourists have zero respect for the ocean when they come and visit Hawaii because they really don't grasp how dangerous it is.
Brings back memories. I grew up on a dairy farm with a 2000# or so Holstein bull. He was great, always playful, never angry. However, he did playfully knock a pair of 15 ft. solid doors off their hangers, just rubbing his neck to get rid of an itch I suppose. He knocked down wooden posts-big ones-and loved to play with humans by head lifting them up in the air, not viciously, but nevertheless, rather high and far. I think the killer whale dude would have been good friends with our bull. May they both RIP.
What a beautiful story thank you for sharing❤

Side note to the geographical structures of Hawaii: There are lava tubes that MIGHT run out to the ocean, but that’s not guaranteed! The lava on all the islands (including the ones off shore) are SHARP, and if you’re near the water, staff infections are highly possible. And… there are a lot of caves and tube systems that are connected to the oceans, but that’s where the BODIES are dumped because many are inaccessible - even with diving gear - because the ocean is too strong, the dives are too dangerous, and those bodies will be torn apart between the lava and current. Don’t ask me where those tubes are because I’ll never tell, and no local in good conscience would. It’s because year after year, too many tourists DON’T LISTEN, and get hurt or worse because they don’t think anything bad will happen to THEM. And that’s where all these stories come from…
Hey I'm going there soon I was wondering if you could tell me where they are😅

Whereas I do feel empathy for Daniel’s mom; we are built to use common sense, not live in a padded world where 99% have to be anesthetized for the 1% who read signs and say “meh.”
"This sign isn't going to stop me, because I can't READ!"
Yeah, although in some sports and activities the line between bravery and stupidity can be really unclear. Not saying that applies here, this one seems pretty bad, but for example when a climber or base jumper or something dies, people will say "oh that's so stupid I'd never do that" but some people will survive an audacious action that others won't. It's hard to decide what's a bad idea sometimes.
It's a little bit more than 1%, otherwise this show wouldn't have so many episodes, a lot of stupidity
Now compare this to bigger things. This is exactly what happens. Think airport security and restrictions (just for a few bastrds...all of us are suffering even for hand luggages, checks, security clearances...though i agree we cant take chances cos those few bstrds might again appear).
