    My heart breaks for the woman trapped in the Water Closet. I can’t imagine hearing that banging for so long and not reporting it. When I moved into my apartment, I was dusting the blinds and they were hitting the window and a neighbor I’d never met before came to my door to make sure everything was okay. Sometimes listening to your gut gets you a teenage girl cleaning, sometimes it saves a life. Always pay attention to anything that seems off to you.
    Edit: I can’t believe people are still commenting just to disagree lol. I stand by my original statement that IF SOMETHING SEEMS OFF TO YOU, pay attention. If it’s a banging that continued for that long, then it would have seemed off to ME and thus I would have gone to check. If you guys would rather turn a blind eye bc it isn’t your business, then you’re welcome to. But I personally wouldn’t. Didn’t realize I had made such a controversial statement.
    Also a woman died. A woman who had a family and an entire life before this. A woman who several people now have to grieve and miss. It doesn’t matter if you would have “known how to survive”, she wasn’t able to and had to suffer in panic for the last hours of her life. Have some respect.

    What bothers me the most about the last story is the fact that the manager didn't go back and check on this man after he didn't return his key. After one hour of not returning, he should have immediately checked on him. Idk if he could have saved him in time, but it would have been the responsible thing to do. Of course, what he should have done, was go with the man. Not letting someone in that room alone is a safety issue. Safety is more important than a phone call.

    • @trig33kgirl
      @trig33kgirl 3 года назад +331

      The manager should have known that 1. The trash room was a death trap and 2. There was really no way to recover anything out of there anyway. He should be charged with Rogers death.

    • @RookieAssassin
      @RookieAssassin 3 года назад +176

    • @RookieAssassin
      @RookieAssassin 3 года назад +143

      @@trig33kgirl Yeah, what did the manager even expect him to do then? He said he was looking for his phone so of course he's gonna check the trash and the tunnel! He should've at least warned him of what not to do, that's the least you can do! But letting a blind man do that alone..how horrible! This could've been easily prevented if the manager had any decency and common sense!

    • @PoptartParasol
      @PoptartParasol 3 года назад +31

      It could be because of any number of things. The manager forgot because he was so busy and stressed, or he planned to do it and got preoccupied with something else. We don't really know. But what is sure is that he is not the sole reason why this man died... but he is part of the chain of events that did lead to it, and that's just unfortunate.
      The best advice that hindsight can give is how to handle this issue going forward. Personally, I would make it a rule going forward that nobody is allowed in the trash room without security or supervision in case of an accident. Regardless of the reason

    When I was in the military I got to my new Duty station and went into my room. We had conjoined bathrooms, so when I went inside, for some reason the door locked from the outside. I was stuck. My roommate was on vacation, and the people in the other room was either not their or the room was empty. There was no way to get out, and I could hear someone knocking on my main door, but they couldn’t’ hear me screaming.
    To make it worst, we just got off for the weekend, so I would have been stuck fro 3 days with no one looking for me. I saw a broom, and figured if I hit the ceiling hopefully someone would hear it. As soon as I banged on the ceiling, the freaking lights went out!! So now im in the pitch black and can’t see anything. I’m so lucky, because the bathroom door has a hole in it, so I just needed to push something through it. Problem is, it’s pitch black and even then there was nothing in the bathroom.
    As I was sitting there, my mind thought of the toilet roll. I knew it should have a spring in there. So I reach in the dark and finally found it. It had a spring, and I pulled it apart. I was so freaking lucky it fit in the hole. I just kept twisting and pushing and finally the door popped open.
    I was so freaking thankful. I’m assuming I would be able to survive with no food for 3 days… but I thank God I didn’t have to find out. Plus to be in the dark for that long.. Omgosh. I don’t want to imagine. Also, this was way before cell phones. 😢

      You know there are closet door latches that don't need to be turned. They are simple ball at the end of a spring, instead of a bolt. Works similarly to a kitchen cabinet. They've had them for decades. My parents house had them, and it was made in the 1950s. That kind of door "latch" should be used for all closets, so this kind of thing can't happen. That's why they stopped making refrigerators with real latched doors by the late 1950s.

      That’s why I think there’s more to that story. Drywall is easy to break through with a pipe. Construction workers cut it with a box cutter. She would’ve kept breaking that whole room down. So she literally died in a closet with a water leak. It’s like getting locked in your bedroom clothes closet and dying in there. I’m thinking she’d missed some important nighttime medicine she was on her way to take. Something had to weaken her because I’m not healthy and know I could break through any drywall wall in my house in less than five minutes. It’s just pressed chalk covered with paper. Something imaginable is she missed her blood pressure medicine so it spiked, which caused her to panic and give up. Or her blood pressure got too low, which makes you really cold, and the cold water leak was unbearable. There’s no way she was pounding as long as the neighbors said without getting out though. Plus, they’re super weird to hear noise all night and all day but not bother to just ask the office out it.

    I can’t believe nobody reported the banging. Granted this was in my own house, but my parents had a few guests over and I was a kid sitting amongst the chattering and laughing adults. My dad was finishing up a shower, when all of a sudden there was banging. None of the adults seemed to take hard notice to it, but I heard it, in successions of 3. I didn’t know morris code, but the successions of 3 to me suddenly clicked in my head as “SOS”. I instantly said to the group of adults “wait, that sounds like SOS.” My mom immediately ran upstairs and my dad had slipped and fallen in the shower and he needed help. I saved my dad that day. When I was far younger and can’t remember he had been changing a lightbulb standing on a plastic stool when it broke underneath him and he fell, smacking his head on the ground. I had been there with him and ran to my mom for help. He still has problems today, including with memory, from that fall. My experiences would never let me to this day ever take light of a strange banging. To this day I just can’t believe all those adults sat around talking and laughing while my dad was upstairs in need of dire help. I’ve saved his life twice. I just can’t believe that couple would report it. If it IS construction then they’d just have been told that. Reporting it hurts nobody and in fact can save a life. Adults can be so incredibly dull sometimes, I’m just thankful to have been put through these sorts of situations as a kid so as an adult I will never act like that. If I can help, if I am able to save someone’s life, I absolutely will without a moments hesitation. My dad could have drowned in the shower, I don’t know the specifics of the situation, but it absolutely tears me up inside that he could have died while all these adults just sat around as he banged, begging for someone to come and save him.

    The "accidentally the wrong door" reminds me of Donald Norman's principles of user-centered design: If you can use it incorrectly, it hasn't been designed well. Typical of light switches, where you just have to experiment to see which one does what -- easy for the electrician to install, hard for the user to operate -- as opposed to something that looks like the room, thus showing you which switch does what. By contrast, my Jeep's seat controls look like a tiny seat, and you can push on the part you want to move; it's quite intuitive.
    It can be assumed that some people will use a bathroom while tired, sick, or even drunk. If you can accidentally stumble into the wrong room in that state, there's a small problem. If you're unable to see in that room and/or unable to get out of that room, there's a bigger problem. Engineers need to design for use cases that involve the user being not at their best.

Could also try to kick the door right at the door jamb but most likely not enough space for that. No doubt in my mind that Roger deliberately climbed into the dumpster. Obviously, he didn't realize it was actually a compactor, but never underestimate the desperate levels of stupidity people will resort to find their "precious" belongings.

    Incredibly negligent on the part of the manager not to check up on someone he allowed to go into a dangerous, restricted room by himself. And why not check for hours after the tenant doesn't return with key? Weird

      @@Darkes336 Hate me for this, I mean no offence, but perhaps she passed away because she failed to realise that the door would have broken open at SOME point if she had continued to barge heavily against it. I guess it's not my place to judge her situation and the circumstances are not something I have full awareness of, but I know British airing cupboards, and there is no way the doors are THAT strong. RIP anyway.
