I’ve heard so many stories about people who were stupid and didn’t follow park rules and ended either injured or killed by the hot water or by being attacked by a bison. It’s so insanely common to hear reports of people being attacked by bison that Yellowstone even sells shirts that say “Do not pet the fluffy cows”
" Do not pet the fluffy cows "
Meh, yes they should've stayed on trail, but very few people realize that there's thermal streams in Yellowstone that look like normal streams. Everyone knows about the springs but very few know about the dangers of the streams. Therefore, if there are warning signs by the springs, why aren't there warning signs by the streams??? Its also not that far from the parking lot. Its not like they fell into a hot stream 2 miles into the wilderness. Anyone could walk 50 feet from the parking lot, see a neat, normal looking stream, touch it and get severe burns because they have no way of knowing how hot it is. They absolutely had a case and its insane that the courts threw it out.
@@dillonhildebrand561 They put themselves into this situation, and were responsible for it. They chose to not pay attention to the time, chose to go off trail, and chose to try to jump a stream in an area very well known as geologically active. Decisions have consequences, they paid the consequences. The park is in no way at fault for their poor decision making skills.
@@StonedDead1981 sadly so many people now days have no concept of personal responsibility. We have created a society that wants to blame everyone else for their mistakes and doesn't want to teach critical thinking skills. I was worried that the belt would slip up around his neck and decapitate him, or he would be sliced up by the end of the ramp. Thank goodness he passed out, so he didn't suffer too much. The men who watched him must have been horrified and traumatized. The sad thing is that he had a perfectly good safety harness already around his waist, but chose to jury rig one himself instead.

I'm honestly kind of glad the courts didn't rule against the parks on the last case. As tragic as Sarah's passing is, it's not the parks fault that Tyler, Sarah & Lance made the decision to go off trail. They were told beforehand that they needed to always remain on trail, so it isn't like they didn't know the rules.
Just because her family was hurt and angered by her tragic passing, does not mean they were right to sue the people that made sure those 3 KNEW the rules.
Jesus, pay attention....it was one of the boys' families that sued the park....not Sarah's family. But I don't necessarily disagree with you that the park wasn't at fault.
The park could still put some more indications, warnings and fences.
@@bofpwet9500You can put a million warnings over there and people still ignore them and claim that they “didn’t know” 🤷♀️😆
@@bofpwet9500 No, you really can't. You're asking for signs visible in all sections of the park off trail. it's 750,000 acres. You're asking for literally millions of signs, completely destroying the landscape and ecology, and probably getting a bunch of people killed just to place and maintain the millions of signs alone, in all those dangerous locations. It's absolute lunacy, and made no sense for them to demand. They're just entitled brats who can't conceive that they or their family might be to blame for anything.
They literally worked at the park so they definitely should’ve known not to do it. A tragedy but preventable
Let's give this guy some props for letting us know that the animals were fine

Not to mention, most people don’t realize how extremely acidic Yellowstone’s water can be. The doctoral student who fell into a hot spring around 2015 could not be recovered because he basically fell into a pool of boiling acid.
Yellowstone is a huge tourist attraction and I think that contributes a lot to people feeling like it's okay to let down their guard and just do whatever (like getting too close to the bison) but it IS a wildlife area and it IS incredibly dangerous if you don't follow the rules or use common sense.
I want to thank you for not sensationalizing the title of your videos. I'm glad that the family lost their lawsuit. I'm so sick of people looking to blame anyone and everyone else for their mistakes. Somewhat related, a friend of mine who worked in the Canadian Coast Guard and lived for over a decade in the High Arctic used to tell me stories about how careful you have to be up there. I remember one story about two careless young women who were working as waitresses for a tavern and kept ignoring all warnings to wear clothing appropriate to the climate and take other such precautions.
One night, they were walking home from a drunken night out. For some reason, they were out on the docks. They stumbled and fell into the water between the docks. Really cold water is such a shock that you can die within a minute of exposure from a heart attack, but apparently, they lived long enough to drown. They weren't found until the next day.
Can I just say that for all the numerous reasons to love this man, he always lets you know the fate of the bystander animals in these stories. The first story immediately had me worried for the dog lol (I forgot about the ferrets!) Thank you for remembering to let us know how EVERYONE in the story ends up!
Same! I was so worried in the first story. Although we know that someone is going to die regardless in many of these stories- it was at least comforting to know that his dogs and ferrets survived fine.
The dog would have probably dug him loose if it hadn't been tied up.
"Her body was ruined"
There's something about that statement that is just so haunting
Right? Wow, that hit hard. Especially since she was conscious and talking when at the hospital.
Oh, I know! Poor girl. :(
Immediately reminded me of the guy that got hit with radiation and he was sitting in the hospital awake and talking and all the doctors knew he was going to die in around 24 hours as the radiation slowly destroyed his body. The pictures are insane. I’ve probably got the story all messed up but that’s the basics of what I remember.
You just forgot the part where the doctors kept him alive for 80+ days against his will. Poor guy was suffering the whole time.

I feel bad for them, but I agree with them throwing out the lawsuit. I have worked in Yellowstone for 2 summers and both times you are warned about the wildlife, the hot springs and the dangers of jumping into random pools of water.
Yellowstone is a rare and treasured place, but it is a place where you can drown and burn to death at the same time.
My thoughts exactly. It was definitely a move of desperation. Medical bills stacking up, someone got the idea to try and sue. It’s a park, with numerous dangers. You can’t put signs everywhere. Not to mention they chose to do what they did.
There’s actually more to this story, from what I learned is that they purposely jumped in because they could’ve easily walked around it. There’s a tribute to her on RUclips, just type her name and her friend actually visits the site she died at and you could see that they unfortunately jumped in on purpose not knowing it was boiling water.

It’s hard to believe that Yellowstone doesn’t require basic safety and survival training for employees. At least the most fundamental things like staying together, not going off trail, paying attention to remaining hours of daylight and having standard gear like flashlights and a sat phone when going into the wilderness.
What is that....a sat phone??
@@arlapieper9746 A satellite phone. It will work almost anywhere including places a normal cell phone won’t get service.
All of that is included in the basic tourist info when you enter the park, along with the requirement for backcountry permits.
And for those mad that the boiling hot creek wasn't marked with a sign, honestly I don't know good a couple of warning signs would work for an ENTIRE RIVER besides putting fencing along the whole length of it. People really need to use their brain and act responsibly. You would think someone would avoid at all costs even the slightest possibility of falling in a body of water, like say if you needed hop over a creek so if there's even a 1% chance of falling in because of how far across it is just take a few minutes and try to find a place where the risk isn't as bad, and it's really just common sense to avoid any body of water you don't know 100% when you're visiting a place that you know is dangerous such as Yellowstone because the purpose of going there is to see BOILING HOT BODIES of WATER. It only makes sense. And this isn't to talk badly about those people that have been hurt, but for those always blaming others because there should have been a sign to warn people. It's why we have so many freedoms taken away because people can't think for themselves and have to be guided through life.
Was with you until.... sat phone. Bruh... If you had to have a sat phone to go hiking, all the parks would have be empty. A sat phone costs more than I pay for a cellphone in a decade.

Steven’s death is pure karma for all the rabbits he killed. Him dying in a rabbit hole is beautiful irony.
14:40 I have watched several dozen MrBallen videos in the last week and this is the only story where I gasped out loud. I think he just described the scene so well, or perhaps my visceral fear of heights/falling.
They walked in complete darkness... "Yellowstone didn't put up signs!". As if those kids would have seen them anyway. It's sad how people refuse to take responsibility for their own actions and constantly look to blame others.
Exactly! What do they expect, a sign every 10 feet of stream? Better also put a warning lanyard on every buffalo!
fun fact: the hot coffee lawsuit everyone uses as an example of idiocy actually was 100% the companies fault they boiled coffee so scalding it actually caused third degree burns on more than 700 people before the infamous lawsuit. The actual affected lady offered to settle for McDonald's to just pay her medical bills and they basically said fuck you, but jokes on them she won millions.. in the long run they spent so much money to harass the poor lady with propaganda that she must have been stupid and coffee = hot that to this day people think she was at fault and it's an example of stupid lawsuits
It's the way of the world anymore it seems.. Most of us know the deal......
Fuck around?

@@Alex-bi9mk THANK YOU. I was just about to say all that but you knew even more than I did. I'm sick of corporations pretending to be victims and gaslighting or slandering consumers who just want them to do better.
Yeah. I understand the pin of the grieving family but it’s also a horrific accident that occurred in nature. You can’t put a sign up everywhere. They didn’t deserve to die for going off trail, it’s just a horrible event. But that’s not the park’s fault either. Just a sad sad situation.
As soon as he mentioned that they held each other's hands when they jumped I knew something bad was going to happen. That's the worst thing you could ever do and almost always ensures that if one person tumbles you all do.
The boys probably knew they could make the jump. She didn't want to jump. "We'll hold hands and help you." Cost them all, and her the most. Just speculating...
I had the same thought! That's two extra bodies of dead weight pulling you into the river!
As soon as the video started playing I knew something bad would happen because it's a mrballin video which don't usually portray any stories with a remotely happy ending. When you find the mrballin video with a happy story; be sure to let me know.
With just a bit higher IQ they would check the water first and definitely wouldn't be holding hands during the jump
@@XoxJasonReynoldsxoX I watched it today it was about a guy reuniting with his daughter estranged for 10 years was pleasantly surprised
I am so glad that the families could not sue the park on the last story. I am so sick of people suing places when they obviously were at fault of any illness or injury.
Imagining Mr. Ballen telling my story is enough to make me think twice before doing something ignorant.
I worked at Yellowstone one year.
The two things that I remember from our employee training was DON'T LEAVE THE TRAILS and the bear training. Which was basically: to avoid bears be noisy and if you see one give it a wide berth, walking away slowly. If it's confrontational, don't play dead. Instead spread your arms trying to look big and yell at it. They like easy prey.
Those were the two things really stressed to us by the park rangers and a couple people actually got fired when they were caught off trail.
How you remember only two things from training? Dementia or something?
Stay on the trails even if they look safe or see someone else doing it and checking to see if it solid. More likely it is not. Don’t follow a fool unless you become be instead. Just because doesn’t get the Darwin’s award, doesn’t mean you won’t. Let them get fired or fined because they won’t , you will

I’m very glad mrballen finally got to sit outside somewhere nice while he made this video, it’s usually rain or dark places!
I live fairly near Yellowstone. Every time I go there I see people doing stupid things like getting real close to bison and leaving walkways, etc. Once my little 8 year old niece saw a guy taking pictures of his kids near some bison. She tells me “ he’s an idiot isn’t he uncle Ken”. :)

I've binged a lot of your videos especially this past week, thanks for the stories and the tact delivering the stories of these real people! All of these were horrific!
The third one made me cringe though, I've had experience where I had some seconds of scalding hot water on my hip and it took weeks for basic recovery, months for things to go back to normal. I can't even imagine the intense pain they had to go through! My thoughts go to them and everyone involved in these stories.

Poor Sarah. Everyone makes mistakes when they are 18. They were just being kids. Even the fact that they jumped holding hands just tells you how naive they were.
I'm still wondering how there wasn't any steam?
Can someone explain please
@@Paul-qk6sy r/iamverysmart
@@mattimaso7455 well the water wasn't "boiling" it was just very hot. In fact it was cooling down because it wasn't near the magma chambers anymore. Steam is created from water evaporating, which was happening, but not at a rapid pace. there was probably small amounts of steak being made but it was very dark so they couldn't see it. very unfortunate.
@@mattimaso7455 Superheated water has different properties to normal water. When water is heated above 100 C but below its critical temperature the water changes properties making it stable and increasing its boiling point. So this stream would look like normal water but in fact is superheated water.

It is hard to imagine 100% 3rd-degree burn. Besides being a death sentence, that must be one of the worst ways to go.
Being eaten alive by bugs may he worse
As someone who at 8 years old got 70% of my body burned 1st and 2nd degree. I can tell you its horrific and mine was just flash burn from gasoline. I took off running and jumped into a creek that was on our property. I cant imagine being in boiling water that long. Hearing stories about such misfortune honestly makes me feel guilty for surviving my years as a raging addict. I rolled through life for around 15 years with no regard for anyone, including myself, and I’m still here while good people have lost it all in a tragic instant.
You have self-awareness, and remorse. That’s good.
DUMB good people. And don't feel bad, just like they say it's the addicts choices and it's "their problem" - that's how I look at it. I got addicted to pills after I came home from overseas and it seems like everone's sympathy is only reserved for females and children. I don't feel bad when people play stupid games and win stupid prizes.
Don't beat yourself up. We all have our own lot in life and the occurrences within one person's context doesn't necessarily equate the same if applied to somebody else. Just try and show gratitude for being so fortunate when you can.
I don't no it takes alot to survive years of addiction , I also survived years of that life and it was very hard at times .

That first story… Somehow I know you were going to say he stuck his head in the rabbit hole and I literally said “dumb ass…” out loud. Who would be so stupid?! You’d think that after centuries of kids getting their heads stuck in things that an adult would know better 🙄
I wish people would stop suing for their own negligence. I hope they had to pay the court fees. I've been to Yellowstone twice and the amount of signs and education are overwhelming. You take your life into your hands when you go off the paths. They have geothermal features litterally everywhere in the caldera. Not to mention bears, wolves and bison.
Couldn’t agree more.
Moose don’t forget about the moose. Also the elk will mess you up if given the chance.
The family lost their child to a horrific death. People tend do whatever they can to cope with their mourning. So I don’t blame the family, and we should show better empathy for them.
@@DarkVWolf Its not coping its greed
someone in a different comment made a really good point. The insurance company will a lot of the time force you to sue because there aren't enough funds to pay for the medical bills. Could have been that the family was grieving and you do things that aren't logical when your under duress, but i'll bet the insurance company encouraged it
“Suicide by rabbit hole” Well, I’m glad they ruled that out as a possibility. I’m sure that was a tough call.

The thing that makes Yellowstone so cool is that it is a supervolcano. The thing that makes Yellowstone so dangerous is that it is a SUPERVOLCANO. You are literally walking around on one of the biggest volcanoes on earth, with a massive magma chamber underneath you. Visitors should absolutely have a healthy fear of their surroundings while they are there! I am thinking that because these kids had been living there, the familiarity with the park made their sense of danger diminish, making them do stupid things that ultimately cost one her life.

The last story reminds me of the story of these two siblings, where one of them wanted to make a video about bathing in a hot spring in Yellowstone. Apparently the younger sibling filmed how their sibling wanted to test how hot the water was, and the soil gave away under them, so they boiled to death and simultaneously dissolved in the acidic water. The body couldn't even be recovered some hours later because it was already dissolved. Please stay on the trails and don't bathe in anything unknown, guys.
Omg i have heard this story
Yeah, all that was left was a wallet and flip flops. Now, that incident was dumb as hell, but sad all the same.

That's a whoopsie
@L-UltraInstinct only one sibling fell into the water. The other one filmed the entire thing, but the footage was never released as it would've been inhumane and traumatizing to do so. I didn't remember the genders of the siblings, so I used "they" to describe what happened. (I read my original comment just now and got confused by it as well. I just googled it and it was a boy and a girl. The boy was the one who died, and the sister didn't fall in.)
