Hammer Of Crom I agree, that one was wasaaaay to much for me! I literally could not watch to the end. I got to John sounding nasally and whoop! Nope can’t do this!!
That nutty putty cave story is a total nightmare. Even the picture has me wondering WHO THE F would willingly go in such a tight space, gives me chills.
He was not prepared, ignored the, warnings, went in head first, didn’t have a map, it’s his fault he died, caving is safer than boxing in terms of death.
I get extremely uncomfortable in like a really emotional way when I hear someone is stuck where they passed away “to this day”. It’s so chilling and saddening.
i know. even though he’s long dead the thought of john all by himself in the pitch black, stuck for all eternity makes my heart hurt so bad. it almost feels like homesickness
I had been in that cave twice, in the 90’s. My younger sister even when into the “Birth Canal”. I was not happy with her for doing that. When she told me about a man getting stuck in that same part of the cave, 10 years after we had been there, and dying, I didn’t believe her. I thought…this has to be an urban legend, but….it was true. I was so sick to my stomach and full I’d dread. 😰
My uncle was in Thailand for that tsunami, luckily in a hotel up big hill. They slept through the tsunami, then puzzled at the strangely high tide. He was also in Japan during that big earthquake, and no-one will go on holiday with him any more.
Has to be one of the dumbest things anyone has ever done. Not to mention that the guy had a kid and another on the way. I would never risk my life knowing that it could leave my son fatherless.
I can't even imagine what John's family felt when they ultimately had to go home from their trip but leave John stuck there dead in the cave. Those people's therapists would need a therapist after hearing about that it must have been a gut wrenching feeling.
@@mattwroe4776 That's because the stupid education system likes to try and force "counselors" onto people at a young age and teach them to overall be absolute pussies and in time that turns into weekly therapist meetings for Rebecca because her Starbucks wasn't exactly how she wanted it.
Lessons from Mr. Ballen: 1. Don't go scuba diving. 2. Don't go into a forest. 3. Don't go into caves. 4. Don't go on vacation. 5. Don't go anywhere you're not supposed to go.
The cave one really broke me. I can’t imagine someone being in that situation and the pain, and fear they must have been feeling. I could barely take a normal breathe while listening
I literally could not watch the rest of the story it was giving me a panick attack. So did they just walk away and leave him or give him so drug to kill him faster? What a terrible situation.
FairMaid En I was thinking the same thing. Administering a drug should have been an option, due to the tortured suffering. It doesn’t seem right to not get the. Body out of there.
@@katiephalen3483 IT wasnt worth the risk, and who was gonna get the body? They arent paid to retrieve corpses and the ones that do THAT job cant be afforded to risk getting that bloated corpse stuck in such a place without tearing the body to shreds. Only thing that could get to him are the insects, and they got him out, bit by bit until the cement closed kitchen for good.
The picture of the tiger standing over the guy is a perfect representation of our basic powerlessness when it comes to nature. Ultimately, it’s always in control one way or another.
@@Baumer747 I don't have claustrophobia, but hearing enough of these stories where people get stuck in caves, started giving me claustrophobia while I was listening to this one.
As soon as he said "extremely low tide" my stomach dropped. Living in Japan, I was always scared I would see that one day, and not have enough time to make it to safety
I live in the PNW of the USA. We too have been taught about the dangers of a sudden extreme low tide. You're at the coast, the water disappears..... you turn and RUN AWAY!!!!
I've lived near the coast, Malmö. I've never experienced that, or been told so. Still, I know, if nature behaves odd - it's a sign of danger. Like one story I was told by my former neighbour. She and her husband were out picking "molter" (Norwegian word, sweet wonderful berries that are exclusively found in or very near swamps) one day. A bit cloudy, but that's typical for autumn weather. Her husband decides to go to a different location, so they can pick berries more effectively. After about half an hour there is a sudden silence. The birds, everything, silent. And there is an odd feeling in the air. Something was very wrong. She wanted to go find her husband, but she couldn't leave either, in case he cam... and he did, just a few minutes later. He came running, and said, "WE HAVE TO LEAVE! NOW!". They ran, with their berries, to their car, and got home safe. No spirits, not dark mysteries. But the day after, they read in the local news papers that a man had been killed by a bear, not far from the area they were picking berries at. If the forrest suddenly goes quiet - you are in danger. If nature suddenly changes, if something really unusual or odd is happening in nature - BEAWARE.
Mine did too. I saw footage of the 2011 tsunami and it was terrifying, swallowing up swaths of land and sometimes people so fast. It gave me nightmares. Many lives changed or lost that day. And I did a bunch of research about tsunamis because that’s how I deal with anxieties, I learn as much as I can. Of course, I live in the Midwest USA about as far away from an ocean as you can get, so unless I visit a beach, I only have to deal with tornados.
The story about John Jones and Nutty Puddy cave always makes me so anxious and sad. This is the first time I’ve heard in detail about how they actually tried to get him out. Something I’ve realized listening to Mr Ballen’s stories about people getting stuck: if you have to take a deep breath to try to get through something, you’re already f*cked.
There is another video on it with a lot more details and pictures, it's long though, maybe 45 mins, i will post a link to it if i can find it again. It even has a map of the cave, so you can see just how small that section is and how he would have had to bend to get to the point he got to. It's pretty anxiety inducing, and the rescuers tried so hard to get him out, until they realized it was hopeless, yet they still kept trying.
@@jessicas.1645 I don't blame you. Out of the many cave death stories I've heard so far, that linked video was the saddest one. He actually survived upsidedown much longer than the doctors ever thought a person could. At least he got to say goodbye to his wife and child, the rescuers had put a radio down to him so they could talk.
@@averagefriend6291 or my personal favorite- any variation of “who got recommended this and is now addicted?” Like everyone, the answer is everyone. This is why we are ALL here.
The worst part about John being stuck in the Nutty Putty cave is that because he was in med school he knew what was happening to his body as it happened. He understood he was going to drowned in his own fluids. He knew how long it would take and how it would hurt. Before this happend I've been in these caves and understand how easily you can get lost and stuck. My friend and I did search and rescue and talked to the guys trying to get John out... he knew long before they were willing to admit that there was no way to undo what had been done. Its all so heartbreaking.
I’ve heard this story before and it never fails to horrify me. As a Medical student, Josh would have known his fate. Without access to his airways, they couldn’t have intubated him to knock him out whilst they broke his legs & whatever else they had to to get him out. For me, this is one of the worst ways to die but I am claustrophobic. I found that out whilst caving/spelunking as a teenager 😱
When I first heard the story I was fully expecting them to break his legs to get him out. Yeah it would have been extremely painful, but he would at least be alive. People hack off their own limbs to survive certain situations. I just can’t fathom that as a last resort they didn’t do that. He probably would have passed out from the pain anyways, and they could have pulled him out.
i like how he adds that fairytale element that makes some sort of moral sense of these stories. implying he deserved to be killed by tigers because he was a lil bit lazy.
I’ll never understand people who go into these really tight spaces and thinking it’s a good idea. My heart started racing and I felt like I couldn’t breathe just listening to that last story. I could never!!!! Rip to that poor soul.
ya and he had a wife a child and another on the way... idk man i wouldnt be doing life risking things when i have a family to take care of and i think a lot of people can agree very foolish idea
They must find it thrilling, like skydiving or something. That could mean it’s only the dangerous sections that that make it fun for them. I used to love the adrenaline rush from riding motorcycles on the edge of control. I knew it was dangerous, and I had to sell my motorcycle to quit when I became a father. I couldn’t bring myself to stay off the throttle.
OMG MCALLISTER 😳😳😳🤯🤯🤯 Edit: did he actually like my comment I know it’s prolly not the real McAllister but I literally watched all of the home alone movies so yeah that like from you still made my day tho I love the movies and I can relate to one of the movie scenes were the intruder stepped on that nail yeah I stepped on a nail when I was super young yeah (srry this is so long) (that’s what she said) (god dammit I need to grow up) thanks for liking my comment 😄😄
I used to be an avid spelunker in my early 20's. Until I got stuck for a couple hours one day. I quit caving that day & never did it again! I got claustrophobic over that shit!
I actually know John's family. They are absolutely incredible people. Hearing this story from the family was one of the most heartbreaking things I've ever experienced. RIP John, your family loves you dearly.
I'm not trying to be mean don't get me wrong, RIP But he went in head first and he went to an unfamiliar part of the cave if he would have gone in feet first he might have been able to be rescued
@@naveenkishore2657 Well, they SHOULD have known there is something wrong. Especially those who lived there. It was human stupidity, causing their death. The same with other two person. I know that man is an Idiot for jumping into a Tiger inclosure, but everyone else harassed the Tiger into attacking him, I know they were worried but If he isn’t attacking don’t do anything.
I know and that is because if You Get attacked by a tiger You die quick but if You Get stuck in a cave You have to starve to death and it would be a long death. But rest in peace every one in this video.
I have seen that footage, it was in India and the people were trying to save him (the only way they knew) as the Tiger got more and more interested in the intruder.

That poor tiger was like "Okay. I don't know what's going on, but this human shows up and I start getting hit by rocks. Maybe if I make him go away the rocks will stop."
Well the people would have been scared and ran away so he wasn't wrong I don't know how people think throwing rocks at a wild animal wouldn't make it mad

Ahhh. I wondered if you had the done Nutty Putty Cave story. A couple of my sons went into Nutty Putty with a good family friend just a couple of years prior to this incident and this really hit them hard when it happened. Absolutely terrifying, but luckily my kids didn't go that far in or do anything too risky.
So glad I finally found you covering the Nutty Putty caving incident. This story gives me anxiety like no other. John was literally crawling deeper into his own tomb.
I went to college not terribly far from Nutty Putty, back before it closed the first time. I had friends who jokingly suggested going spelunking in it on a lark, and I adamantly refused. It wasn't until years later that I learned it had been closed down the year I graduated due to people getting stuck, and then later reopened just months before John got stuck. This story gives me anxiety too.
I love how he evenly paces himself, totally present in whatever part of the story he is currently telling. Theres no trickiness trying to create suspense, he totally inhabits each scene as if it's the most important one. Excellent story telling skills.
Absolutely right. He has a real talent for telling a story. Notice that he includes all the right details needed to fuel the listener's imagination, but not too many. When he described John's ribs getting stuck on the far side of the lip, I cringed, physically.
I'm a cave tour guide. It's safe as long as you are with a guide. We know safety measures and don't allow people to do anything that could put them in danger
This is one of the most terrifying stories I've heard so far. You are an excellent story teller, because I felt my chest get stuck as you described this scene.
I went into Nutty Putty Cave years before this event ever happened. It was a pretty popular spot, honestly. To get into the main cavern, you have to army crawl on your stomach for about 15-20 feet. It was the most claustrophobic feeling I've ever had. The part where John got stuck was way back. I looked down in that direction when I was in there. You couldn't have paid me a million dollars to go further. My "don't go there" senses were screaming at me. How he pushed past that feeling I'll never know.
I have had literal nightmares where I’m in a compressed tunnel and can’t freely move my limbs. I’m not claustrophobic but this just makes my lizard brain scream. I’ll stay on the outside of rock formations thank you very much; I’ve trained the ‘stay away from heights’ part of my lizard brain to shut up. 🤣
I doubt I'd of even made it through that first army crawl you speak of! I also read that some years previous a rescue took place in the same, waist high, tunnel offshoot that John got stuck in (near Ed's push I think it's called), however this was a child/boy scout much smaller than John. What's worse is that John actually went 10ft further than where the child had gotten stuck...
seriously. did fight or flight just never kick in?? i'd feel the first squeeze and 'nope' right out of there. i had to pause and walk away from my computer for a bit during that description. hoo boy.
That spelunking one is terrifying to me. That is my actual real only phobia, crawling into something that I get stuck in, and can't get out. I"m not claustrophobic, it is all about getting stuck in something exactly like this, not being in a confined area, or in the dark, but stuck. This is why I have never gone spelunking.
This is not phobia it is logical. I am 200 pounds and a little over 6 foot tall if I can't fit my shoulders in I am not going that looks like he had his shoulders and ribs caught on the tunnel in the cave system
God its so terrifying. Just listening to the story freaks me out. I mean the fact that, that cave had sections that weren't explored and that hole wasn't covered up to begin with is just so bad. And the fact that it was so easily mistaken for another more famous track is just so bad. Why wasn't there like labelling or something!? God its so scary.
Especially when u see people squeezing into those little holes under water with no idea of what's on the other side .... like what if u can't turn around. Ugh thinking about it gives me massive anxiety. Listening to the last story literally has me squirming and rocking back and forth on the verge of a panic attack ... I just cannot imagine and I pray life circumstances never finds me in this situation by accident ...it sure as hell won't be happening intentionally on my part. RIP to all these people and bless John. How.horrible
When I was a kid, my dad took me to a cave system in New Mexico. We weren't spelunking. It was a tourist attraction with a tour guide, and paths and stuff. Either way, I did not like the experience. I felt like I was in danger the whole time. I remember when they shut the lights out in the cave. It was so dark it was disorienting. I felt claustrophobic even in this massive cavern. That was the last time I ever stepped foot in a cave. I will never go back. I couldn't imagine actually spelunking, and fitting myself through these tiny little holes. I don't think I could physically force myself to do it.
I went to Nutty Putty several times as a teenager. We were extremely naive and inexperienced. I never even saw a map of the cave. I moved from Utah and never heard about this until watching this video. I am extremely fortunate.
Man my heart skipped a beat when he said extremely low tide and showed that initial picture. Its terrifying that all those people even if they had known they probably couldn't have made it to safety.
While tsunamis can happen without warning, when you do have the receding ocean warning, there is time to evacuate. There were 2 other beaches hit, where someone recognized the signs and the areas were evacuated safely.
I'm curious as to how much time passed from when they saw everyone on the beach and joined in taking pictures and when the wave officially hit land. They may have still been in danger even if they had started running as soon as they saw the extremely low tide but could have saved their lives.
This one was so hard to hear. I can’t even imagine the pain, fear, helplessness and utter grief this man felt while trapped in that cave. I was getting amped up and even nauseated just thinking about being in that position. Condolences to his family and especially his wife and children.
Death is looking at our faces every day. And no one can guess when and where would be one last's breath. Young or old. We all end up doing something while death approaches. That's a fact. Nevertheless, it was the sad story of John, but on a positive note, I'm sure the families were all gathered there to see him leave for the final time.
The cave story was terrible to listen to I can not get it out of my mind, the fact that you tell the story so well I felt like I was the one trapped in this cave!!
Of ALL of the Mr Ballen Videos I've seen and of All of the horrid accounts of death I've heard or have seen ,the Tragedy of John Jones is by far the saddest . I have seen other Accounts of this Awful Tragedy and I feel worse seeing This Account . That poor Guy,trapped ,terrified, and hopeless especially towards the end . Hopefully, the poor Young Man slipped into unconsciousness before the terrible pain and anguish set in . Please do not think that I am some terrible Monster for hoping this. Were I in that same situation - Being young, fit and strong yet even this not being of any help . Being alone and terrified as Body Systems succumb to the unrelenting crushing as Death slowly arrives . Alone and trapped within the wretched Darkness, with no hope of rescue despite everyone's best ,most Heroic Efforts ,I would want to mercifully go unconscious before the extreme pain and sorrow of dying in this manner comes to meet me . Rest in Peace John Jones .
oh yeah. plus the one with the kid stuck upside down in the back of his car and being crushed by the seat. the way the two dispatchers he called let him down... the whole ordeal is a nightmare
I just can't imagine what's fun about crawling around in the dark , I keep thinking where's the fun part? That's a living nightmare to me. People actually do this....
Still to this day it makes me shiver and makes me not able to breathe. Even as a geo-gemologist hell no you couldn't pay me $$$$$ to climb into cave tunnels. Fuck that. Took me till my mid 20s to watch the Descent. Oof.

Hearing this story about John is why i stopped going into tight spaces & caves. I couldn't Imagine dying like that or being the other brother knowing you have to leave your brother down there.
I’ve heard John’s story before, but there’s something about this iteration that just grabbed my heart and squeezed. The thought of what he went through is utterly terrifying. Leaving him there, I understand, but his family members must still be in gut-wrenching agony; I would be.
They didn't leave him there. After he died they painstakingly dragged him out of that tight space and then had to basically force his body through the cave, just to get him out.
I seriously couldn’t breathe while you told the story of John being stuck in cave. What a terrible way for your life to end, the pure suffering is too much to even imagine
It’s one of the saddest and most disturbing stories I’ve ever heard. I read about it years ago and it’s really stuck with me That sounds like a horrible, horrible experience.
Jesus "tight squeeze" was so hard to listen to.. I can't imagine the thoughts running through that guys mind.. He had to know he wasnt getting out.. And the realization that the tunnel just ended.. Man.. My heart sank
Omg the version i heard was heart wrenching, they brought his wife to the cave so she could walkie talkie him and the last attempt they made caused a bunch of rock to collapse and the rescue worker that was closest to him got a boulder to the face and broke his jaw and the last thing john said was if the rescue worker was gonna be okay. Another reason they left his body there was bcuz once rigor mortis sets in then his body would be even harder to remove and the story i heard said that his wife wouldnt leave for hours after because she could bare leaving him in the cave alone and apparently they promised they would get him but they werent able so they sealed the cave and he'll remain there forever! So sad and unimaginable!
actually there are many places like that, 4 example, there are plenty of mountain climbers bodies spread over the Everest sides that no one bring back. They are just left over there cause is too hard and dangerous to perform a body recovery. check it up. there are corpses that are even recognized and used as land markers by climbers. like - *hey after you reach the corpse with a blue jacket, turn left* - In this video, some guys show how the cave entrance looks like today. Its a tomb basically ruclips.net/video/ScU9j83OEPI/видео.html
I went to the Nuddy Puddy cave when I was 12 and went through the birth canal, you could not pay me enough to try it again as a full grown adult. I couldn't even begin to imagine what must have go through his head when he got stuck. So sad.
Having worked with rescue in the past: Most of the time. But we have all done something stupid in the past, too - so it isn't a judgement on the person as much as the situation. And, tbh - probably a bit of a coping method when we cannot find/save people.
Moral of the last story: Never cave dive off of memory alone. Never go headfirst down a vertical hole. Never go headfirst down a hole ever, unless you're 100% sure what's on the other side
Your baby is sooo adorable and I love the giraffe jammies. Thank you for including that in this video. Who doesn't need a little baby footage in their lives to make it better? I know that made me smile.
"Even in captivity, they were totally in control." At that I looked over at my sleeping cat, and she raised her head and looked back at me with a glint in her eye. They are indeed in control.
The were once reveard as Gods by the Egyptians and they have not forgotten it! You think thr staff would jave knowing stones neing at it the big cat would get p*ssed off. I bet they shot the poor thing too, just for doing what a tiger would do.
as a person with severe claustrophobia, the last story was an absolute torure to hear, I've had nightmares that kept me up at night just imagining stuff like this. Thank you for the adrenaline.
the worst part about john jones' story is he was a med student - he probably knew exactly what was happening to his body being upside down for that long.
That's the worst part?! No. That's NOT the worst part. The worst part is that he DIED. He left behind a wife, kids, loved ones. Not that he was a med student. What kind of response was that? How about deleting it because you're a tool.
@@Cityhallfreak Obviously his death was the worst part but the fact be probably knew exactly what was happening and that he'd probably died from it while he was alive is definitely a worse part of his story. The person who wrote the comment isn't a tool.
@@scottjondansteve9343 Well no shit, but I think they're more focusing on how terrifying it was for John because he was aware of his fate. That had the most psychological impact on John in this scenario, is what they are implying.
"Ways to Torture The Like Button" a book written by Mr. Ballen, published 2020. New edition every week!! Bestseller!!! Loved by everyone, including the dislike button. Hated by the like button.
It was his own fault though, he broke all the basic safety procedures but they exist for a reason. It's like jumping out of a plane without a parachute and expecting to grow wings on your descent. Very sad but he was ultimately responsible for his own demise.
Imagine being chased by the tiger into a cave just as the tsunami hits and pushes the tiger and you into a small tube and now if you move you'll be drowned by the water meanwhile the tiger is inching closer to being able to start chewing pieces off of you..,sweet dreams.
Damn. I got literal chills when he was describing John getting stuck in the hole. Ive heard the story before but with such a great story teller he totally painted a picture in my mind of him trapped.
same. there must be more to the story than what he said cause i don’t think any search and rescue would’ve just left him there when they already had it all set up and the only other option would’ve been for him to die and rot there. so i’m guessing there’s some other info that mr ballen may have missed on why they didn’t try it anyways.
alright, i read the story and it’s even worse. they pulled him to the area where they would have to break his legs, with a rescue person, ryan, squeezed in behind him to survey. when they pulled to break john’s legs, a loud noise popped and the rescue person passed out. when he came too, there was blood everywhere. the arch had cave in and the metal pulley piece hit the rescuer ryan in the face and split his tongue. because of the pressure being let go, john also slid all the way back to where he started. the rescuer ryan told john that he is hurt and that somebody will be back to stay with him and drill in a new pulley system for him. the rescuer’s father, dave, was the next to join john in the cave. john was starting to give up hope and told rescuer dave that he was gonna die in here. dave told him everything will be okay. john was super worried about the previous rescuer, aka dave’s son, and kept asking dave if ryan was okay. after a while, john went quiet. he had passed out. he asked john to suck his stomach in to tie the rope around him and dave got no answer. he received the new drill and after a while installed the new system. it was a super tight and hard area to drill because some areas just fell apart. dave ended up getting stuck and had to fight to get out. another rescuer brought john a telecom system, and after he woke up he got to speak to his wife through the speaker one last time. john ended up passing out again and didn’t wake back up. they weren’t able to get his body out because the system relied heavily on john helping maneuver himself through the small crevice, without his help, it was nearly impossible to force his lifeless body through just with the pulley and they had to call it off in order to not put the rescuers in more trouble. nutty putty cave was then closed off forever. also, two other people had gotten stuck in the same tunnel/area john did. however they were much smaller weight and height wise than john, and even then, it took hours upon hours to get the other people out. it had been closed after the second person got stuck, but had just reopened 6 months before john got stuck and died. so now they will be keeping it closed off forever.
@@BenjaminWeeb The thing is no one had experience of the site. Incredibly stupid. I went to cramped tunnels the same style (maybe not so extreme), crawling where you cannot turn your head. It's a fantastic sensation but for a good time, I was with people who knew where it was safe to go.
John’s wife ended up giving birth to a son and she named him John. But honestly, if John was going to die anyway had they left him, why NOT take the risk of shock to get him out? Then even if the shock did kill him, he’d have been free of the cave. And the pulley system they rigged apparently DID start working and John was actually moving, but one of the pulley’s failed and John was dropped back into that little tunnel even further than he had been originally. Either way, that’s a horrible horrible way to die and the reason I would never go spelunking myself unless the cave has huge caverns without tiny little tunnels you’d have to get through to reach them.
I went spelunking once and, while for the most part it was cool. I saw places where you could squeeze into and I was like “nope. That’s not how I’m going out.”
They would kill him because they would have to break his bones, he died when he dropped back and pulling out the body would be really dangerous for other people.
Prob just a less traumatic painful way to go? You’d hope doctors could’ve taken mercy and gave him sedative and pain killers.. either way WORST STORY EVER, this case has haunted me for years..
What's terrifying about John's death, and I sincerely apologize if this upsets anyone, is that the pulley system that was set up to get John out of the tunnel ultimately failed him. He slipped out of it, and after being upside down for 27 hours, this is the fall that ultimately caused his death. Even in this terrifying situation, he was able to joke with the people who tired to save him. He was wearing jeans and the first responder said that in order to make a little more room to try and get him out, she would have to "remove his pants", to which John replied, "fine, just don't tell my wife". From every video I've seen about this, John seemed so lovely and so much fun to be around. What happened to him is so sad.

When she told me about a man getting stuck in that same part of the cave, 10 years after we had been there, and dying, I didn’t believe her. I thought…this has to be an urban legend, but….it was true. I was so sick to my stomach and full I’d dread. 😰

The picture of the tiger standing over the guy is a perfect representation of our basic powerlessness when it comes to nature. Ultimately, it’s always in control one way or another.

Facts!!!
Dude that sounds crazy I live where we get tornados and that's not nearly as scary as a huge wave splashing on you and crushing you
I'm from Croatia, so tornados and tsunamis aren't a serious danger to me, but we do have something even more terrifying...underwater caves
John basically buried himself alive in what would become his tomb. That’s heavy shit.
Yeah 😭
That cave system will be haunted af now

Okay, so it is only 16 minutes long, but it felt like forever to me!

This story gives me anxiety too.

So if you hadn’t passed that feeling.. you would end up like john.... woah.
Your lucky and brave Rest In Peace John
Good thing you did not end up that way
I start feeling the panic creeping up on me just hearing him describe squeezing through that tight ass tunnel.
seriously. did fight or flight just never kick in?? i'd feel the first squeeze and 'nope' right out of there. i had to pause and walk away from my computer for a bit during that description. hoo boy.

This is not phobia it is logical. I am 200 pounds and a little over 6 foot tall if I can't fit my shoulders in I am not going that looks like he had his shoulders and ribs caught on the tunnel in the cave system

Why anyone goes caving is beyond me, its terrifying just listening to the story. Thank you john. I'm addicted to your channel. X
mr ballen has taught me that caving isnt worth it
I wouldn’t go caving for all the money in the world
Especially when u see people squeezing into those little holes under water with no idea of what's on the other side .... like what if u can't turn around.
Because some people are addicted to adrenaline. They risk their lives for a hit of those chemicals like every other idiot drug abuser.

I wondered when they figured out they were in trouble. They had to have known by the last photo.
It’s not a SIM card, it’s a memory card tho.
@@berube361 Every step away would have increased their chances of survival.
This one was so hard to hear. I can’t even imagine the pain, fear, helplessness and utter grief this man felt while trapped in that cave. I was getting amped up and even nauseated just thinking about being in that position. Condolences to his family and especially his wife and children.
His wife recently remarried. She was pregnant with their second son when it happened. The movie about him called 'The Last Descent' is heartbreaking 😢
Why would anyone ever take such a risk… so irresponsible
Stupidity run amuck.
I have been in those caves when I was a kid.
Death is looking at our faces every day. And no one can guess when and where would be one last's breath. Young or old. We all end up doing something while death approaches. That's a fact. Nevertheless, it was the sad story of John, but on a positive note, I'm sure the families were all gathered there to see him leave for the final time.
I've had your videos in my watch layer forever and I'm so glad I waited to binge them. So good.

They didn't leave him there. After he died they painstakingly dragged him out of that tight space and then had to basically force his body through the cave, just to get him out.

I would rather die by shock after someone breaking my legs TRYING to get me out rather than being gave up on..
same. there must be more to the story than what he said cause i don’t think any search and rescue would’ve just left him there when they already had it all set up and the only other option would’ve been for him to die and rot there. so i’m guessing there’s some other info that mr ballen may have missed on why they didn’t try it anyways.
alright, i read the story and it’s even worse.
they pulled him to the area where they would have to break his legs, with a rescue person, ryan, squeezed in behind him to survey. when they pulled to break john’s legs, a loud noise popped and the rescue person passed out. when he came too, there was blood everywhere. the arch had cave in and the metal pulley piece hit the rescuer ryan in the face and split his tongue.
because of the pressure being let go, john also slid all the way back to where he started. the rescuer ryan told john that he is hurt and that somebody will be back to stay with him and drill in a new pulley system for him.
the rescuer’s father, dave, was the next to join john in the cave. john was starting to give up hope and told rescuer dave that he was gonna die in here. dave told him everything will be okay. john was super worried about the previous rescuer, aka dave’s son, and kept asking dave if ryan was okay.
after a while, john went quiet. he had passed out. he asked john to suck his stomach in to tie the rope around him and dave got no answer. he received the new drill and after a while installed the new system. it was a super tight and hard area to drill because some areas just fell apart.
dave ended up getting stuck and had to fight to get out. another rescuer brought john a telecom system, and after he woke up he got to speak to his wife through the speaker one last time. john ended up passing out again and didn’t wake back up.
they weren’t able to get his body out because the system relied heavily on john helping maneuver himself through the small crevice, without his help, it was nearly impossible to force his lifeless body through just with the pulley and they had to call it off in order to not put the rescuers in more trouble.
nutty putty cave was then closed off forever. also, two other people had gotten stuck in the same tunnel/area john did. however they were much smaller weight and height wise than john, and even then, it took hours upon hours to get the other people out. it had been closed after the second person got stuck, but had just reopened 6 months before john got stuck and died. so now they will be keeping it closed off forever.
