- In November 2009, a family trip down to the Nutty Putty caves turned into a hellish nightmare, causing one of the most unusual and arguably terrifying deaths in caving history, leading to the Nutty Putty caves being sealed shut forever.
This is the story of the Nutty Putty Cave incident.

Literally my worst nightmare. You couldn’t have paid me to go down there, how anyone thought this was a fun idea is beyond me.
Beyond u & me..it’s like what about this is fun ? Maybe it’s a adrenaline thing but hell no
Every once in a while I have dreams that I’m stuck like this. It’s one of my biggest fears
Yeah only cave I wanna go in is the one where I can walk in with the big mouth , crawling ? I’m turning around
My thoughts exactly, what the hell is fun about this? I try not to judge people for their different tastes in hobbies but come on.
I didn't think I had any major fears until I watched this video.
I will never understand why anyone would want to squeeze their bodies into spaces inside the ground in the pitch black darkness.
It's white person stuff bro.
No other group tends to do such activities. It's us. We do these things, for some reason...
@@Philip_Taylorthis is so true lol, I wonder why
@@serenawilliams3475 I have no idea, but it's the same reason why our ancestors went around the entire world making new countries and others did not.
In Africa they have a well-meaning slang term for Caucasians: Mzungu. It means "Endless wanderer" and you will hear it when you're walking around there, thousands of miles from home...still endlessly wandering as your white self.
Not gonna see no black or hispanic person do this... definitely white people😢

I genuinely think phobias are not weaknesses, but rather a system in the brain that keeps you away from dangerous things that may put you in harms ways
For real, take a hint from a trillion years of mammalian genetic memory that's like "bro no"
Well it is a weakness, Bc phobias are exaggerated. Is normal to be scared going in caves, but if watching this video gives you panic attacks, then is a problem. Anxiety is normal to have, but over exaggerating isn’t good.
I believe so ! I know it's saved me more than a few times
@@lulu_TheWitchBoy True. But I'd rather have a panic attack watching this than being completely unafraid and getting myself killed in the future doing something like this. Phobias are excessive, but they're better than dying because you weren't afraid of something that is very clearly dangerous. From that perspective they are not a weakness.
Idk, some people have phobias of wierd items like spoons or mop buckets.
it’s just crazy to me to think that a cave labelled as ‘beginner’ would have holes that accessible yet that damning, still unexplored
I don’t think that part of the cave was supposed to be for beginners, I think it was just the Big Slide, that’s why only the brothers went further down, since they thought they had the necessary skills to find the Birth Canal
Right like how tf can it be beginner level if when I take a wrong turn I DIE 💀
They filled it with concrete so no more money spent saving idiots.
Could be intentional
Right I'd hate to see the "Advanced" level caves 😮
The way some people were pushing for this cave to not close down when so many incidents had occurred is beyond me
So it wasn't his fault that he deleted himself? It was everybody else's? Smartest man to ever live dies by the hands of others. Tragic.

People die all the time and you wouldn't think it will happen to you, but that's exactly why it most likely will.
Does it creep anyone else out that the hole John got stuck in MADE HIS FEET ABLE TO TOUCH THE CEILING? It was perfectly sized to take him in, but never let him out again, with nowhere to go? It’s like that fissure’s sole purpose was to be someone’s grave, just big enough to hold one body, FOREVER.

And there’s thousands of them in these caves. What some people won’t say is the truth that there are probably hundreds of people in those caves that were never found. There’s no way of knowing how many people were swallowed by those caves.
The people arguing that it should stay open and it’s their choice to risk their lives seem to be forgetting about the ones who will have to risk their own lives saving them or recovering their bodies.
Exactly!
They are so selfish honestly
That part
So we should close all roller coasters? And close all roads. And no more hiking because you might lost and need rescuing. Maybe we should close all caves. And mountains. No more planes cause they may crash and first responders may die trying to rescuing you. Hmmm no more dryers in homes because they cause thousands of fires a year. Wow your logic sucks. People need the freedom to explore and entertain themselves. Not only that but there are very few deaths like his. He was no longer a skinny kid. He was a 200 lb man who hasn't been in a cave in years and he made mistakes. We all shouldn't suffer because he died. Life is dangerous. We all will die. Even you. We can't just stop doing things because someone might get hurt. First responders KNOW what they do is dangerous. Saving people is a dangerous business. I did it for years and yet I wouldn't want everyone to not have access to caves and mountains and airplanes ect ect just because someone might get stuck and I might die trying to save them. The craziest part about caving is that you don’t even have to do it, but here we are
Why would a normal sized person ever do this? If you're an Asian teen Olympic gymnast, I still wouldn't do it, but that would at least make some sense.
yeah I feel bad for the wife and kids bc this could have ben avoided, there are safer ways to have fun..
There’s a lot of extreme activities we don’t have to do, but people do anyway. Deep sea diving, skydiving, free climbing, F1 racing, black diamond skiing. Hell you could even argue American football is just as non necessary but here we are despite the high risk of death and concussion for a “regular” sport.
Like sky diving and cave diving and free climbing and bullet dodging
@@na3rial I understand that, and I partake in one of those as well (I race dirt bikes and ride harleys) the difference is that the assumed risk is much more digestible when considering 1. How good you are at said hobby, 2. The likelihood of injury/death, 3. How readily available help is if/when something goes wrong, and 4. If said hobby is worth the adrenaline given the risks. You could say that this hobby might’ve been worth the adrenaline and feeling from doing it, but to me personally the assumed risk is too high to make it justified. They also mentioned that the guy hadn’t been caving in years.

Not everyone has claustrophobia. I love tight spaces and love climbing in caves. Adventuring through the beautiful landscape of a cave that has been built upon by Mother Nature herself. @@EdenMcCoy-rt9hp, it gets even scarier. There are stories of people doing this crazy stuff and dying in extremely narrow tunnels in underwater caves.
I explored these caves twice. My initial visit was with 6 friends. I got a little ridiculed for chickening out on a narrow passage and backed out while I still could. The 2nd time, I was the lead with one other friend (1st timer). Again, didn’t try anything too dangerous but I got lost trying to exit because you have to go up, then down, then up again like a horizontal S. So when you are looking for the exit shaft, your flashlight looks like it is hitting 360* or rock wall. It took me two hours of searching foot by foot, little passage by little passage before I found my way out. I swore off the caves forever after that.

Once you are married and have a family, there must be a limit to the risk you would take. Feeding your adrenaline or 'pushing yourself' against nature to prove something will not replace a husband or father if it goes wrong. @@brentwunderlich4634 what does being old enough have to do with this situation? There are plenty of old professional cavers who would not have made this mistake. He just didnt do his research on the cave properly and made the wrong turn. Has nothing to do with risking your life. Risk is only involved in the event where information is not available and you're acting on chance, this was pure negligence.
It was once legal to drive under the influence and when it was made illegal some people thought it was an infringement on individual freedom. These are the same types of people who insisted that a cave system, that was repeatedly proven to be dangerous, should stay open to public use, insisting that closing it is infringing on personal liberties.
Safety laws and regulations exist for a reason, and they usually fall into place only after disaster happens.
The fact that someone said they'd never heard of any dangerous incidents occurring in the cave before just proves that they did not research or think anywhere beyond their own selfish desires when addressing the issue of the closure.
Agreed. It's also never just about yourself. In this case, several rescuers risked their lives and were injured in their attempts to save him and his child was left without a father. And so many innocents are killed by drunk drivers every year. Making risky choices can affect, hurt, and even kill the people around you (loved ones, rescuers, innocent bystanders), so of course not everyone should be given free reign all the time!

@Out Side I've been exploring caves all my life, and for me, it's fascinating to see structures and formations that are so ancient, and yet so rarely seen IRL. Especially wild caves, where we can sometimes even discover whole new passageways no one knew existed. However, I'm extremely small and flexible (this profile pic is me) compared to John, who was 6' and 200 pounds. John was used to exploring caves as a high school student, but this time he was a large adult, and I don't think he thought about how much a difference that makes. 😕
I’ve been in the Nutty Putty cave several times before it was closed due to this incident. One of the most horrifying ways to die. Would've only been worse had he not been able to communicate with his wife and rescuers. I think having had the hope of being rescued as well as hearing the voice of someone he loved probably made it easier than just slowly dying alone. But being stuck upside down unable to move slowly realising that you may never get out and then just when you're face to face with your rescuers and start being pulled out, you fall back down. At least he was unconscious after that and probably didn't suffer anymore but damn. That must've been horrific for everyone involved.

No matter how many times I hear this story and watch these videos. It’s so terrifying, sad, and just haunting. The impact on his family and thinking that he is still there to this day.
There are three areas on Earth where recovering the remains of people who have died is simply too dangerous to attempt: The tops of tall mountains, inside of underwater caves, and inside of above-water caves. There are still explorers who died on Mount Everest in a seated position inside of an ice cave that mountaineers have to pass every time they climb, a reminder that, if you die up there, no one is coming to claim your body. I saw a video about a diver who could not be recovered after he got lost exploring an undersea cave. That cave is now his tomb. The Nutty Putty caves are now this man's tomb as well. Can you imagine the panic attack he must've had and couldn't move or do anything about it. Send chills through my body just thinking about it.
After a few rescue attempts, I'd have honestly just asked for a pistol to be thrown down to me, I'm going out in my own terms, mother nature can suck it.
His panic attack? The one had had watching this was way worse!
@mycatisromeo you're right, mines was through the roof just watching. I wouldn't wish that on nobody.
@@wiLLgEEzY1 Btw, if you want to see a pretty good movie that is scary about caving, check out "The Descent".
@@wiLLgEEzY1 You know what's messed up too? How mangled and fucked up people get in car accidents, yet most of us drive around, some idiots textigng while driving, and oblivious to just how fucked up and mangled a bad car accident can make one. And it's something that we almost forget about... no need to even go into a cave to be scared shitless lol
Absolutely horrifying way to die. Thinking about this is giving me a panic attack how awful not being able to get out of that position rendering you completely helpless and waiting on your impending doom. Awful
That poor man, he took a wrong turn and it cost him his life, his poor wife trying to ease his fears, and the rescuers that risked their lives; a tragedy for all involved. How sad that he was left there, so close to life whilst so close to death; what an awful circumstance. God Bless his soul and his family. I was hoping for a more positive outcome.
What a weird reply
"poor man" well any average person would tell you this is a bad idea... So i wouldnt say poor.
@@ryanthomas2374 just because you can be warned against something doenst mean that if you get in that position you are not worth sympathy such as your situation being sad or poor.
@@ryanthomas2374 oh come on now, having some sympathy cost nothing
@@ryanthomas2374 he did not realise the danger. he thought he was entering a generally navigable area. he simply made a wrong turn, and it cost him his life. apathy is never a flex, and emotional maturity is a sign of intelligence. you are clearly not.
I have to be honest, this is one of the most unsettling videos I've ever watched. That is absolutely the worst way to go. But hats off to the men and women who risked their own lives to try and save him.
I mean he did go in willingly to something that should never be explored . A deep cave
This video has a ton of good information I didn't know before. But if you really want to get freaked out, go check out the video that Fascinating Horror did on this in the early days of that channel. With the music and everything, I'm not sure I slept well in weeks after that.
@@freyafoxmusic I think dying of a stupid voluntary decision is worse than something accidental. At least for me.
Ever hear of the Iron Maiden or the blazing bull? Trust me, there are worse ways to go. John didn’t suffer too badly.
I can't even begin to comprehend that someone actually experienced this. Just imagine the glimmer of hope John would have had each time the rescuers devised a new plan to get him out only for said plans to fail one by one and the soul crushing reality sinking in that maybe this will be the end. It's truly horrific. The fact his body will stay down there forever is haunting.
It was John who was trapped, Josh was his brother.
@@bobtnner thanks, corrected
@@RyanSprklSame. It's literally my nightmare
Well… that was depressing to watch just before bed..
RIP John
That's crazy that the cave became tighter as he went further and then went downwards. It's almost as if it was designed to be a death trap.
Death trap? No creature ever dies there. Just really stupid humans. Even animals think in their brain "Small cave? Look dangerous! Me scared!"
@@Megasaurusify I think death trap was an appropriate choice of words
@@Megasaurusify …. Wow lol. Is that not a potentially dangerous area??

Absolutely horrifying. I’m having to pause repeatedly because I can barely stand the anxiety it’s causing me. That poor man. That poor family.
Same here. My heart started to beat faster and my breathing intensified. I had to walk away from the computer.
Same here. I feel so uncomfortable watching and listening why she narrates. My heart is beating so fast.
Yea. I keep turning it off and then going back. Makes my skin crawl.
Felt the same, I had to pause multiple times, it was too hard...
Same 😰. I could never
I think the most terrifying part of this story was the idea that John was completely correct to think that he needed to keep pushing through the small hole before it opened right up … IF it was the birth canal. But it wasn't. I can’t imagine the confusion followed by sheer terror that must have struck in realising he’d taken a wrong turn and was now wedged stuck in THE nightmare position
did they have maps of the caves?
They did but he read the wrong one. Basically one mistake put his life on stake and he lost it. 😢@@em84c
I think about that, and have my own conclusions.
Since it's "The Birth Canal" and he's a devout Mormon, I feel John was so eager to have that experience that he didn't want to admit he was wrong when things got a little hairy.
He probably had some talks with god, thinking about how this is all part of the experience and his faith would be rewarded.
I don't know if that's actually what went through his head, but it makes sense.
I couldn’t even imagine the final moments, before he lost consciousness, the fear he was going through. I couldn’t imagine the regret he must have felt and the mistake he made taking the wrong turn.
I know he was like Damn !
Like a patients didn't study the map properly did not take the time something we learn as we get older hopefully
