As long as there had been tours to that place I often wondered if visitors were mentally sound. Go skiing, diving or visit Fiji, nope, visit live volcano 👀
I can’t believe looking back I went to it, once there I was pretty freaked out & was super happy to leave. It seemed so normal & I trusted it was safe, how else could they be running tours? it wasn’t thrill seeking, it was for the beauty of nature. Unbelievably sad for these people.
The 60 minute Australia documentary on the White Island tragedy is amazingly horrific (it focuses more on the perspective and has interviews from the people who were STILL on the island after it erupted). They were left for dead . Looked more into it after watching your original upload of this case. Wonderful job mr ballen
I was watching this and thinking about how I couldn't see myself doing something so risky no matter how amazing it would be, as I would want to live to remember it. If there was a way to up my odds much higher I'd go for it; maybe it's because I have kids that I feel like that. Watching the last bit where they are fleeing the expanding ash cloud, I was thinking how it must have been to experience that and knowing that likely people you saw moments before had been blown out of existence. And then I realized I did know, and why I felt curiously connected to this story. This is how I felt when I was standing on the southeast corner of Church and Fulton outside the Millennium Hotel, staring up at the north tower after evacuating the store I worked in at Building 5. When I looked up to see people hanging out of windows as smoke and flames poured out of the upper floors knowing it was likely some of them had been through my store (Borders Books #142 World Trade Center) on their way to work in the WTC and the neighboring Financial Center earlier that morning. I knew that people from Windows On The World (the restaurant) had, as they had an account with us so I had met several. I saw people fall, and count myself lucky my position on the street kept me from seeing them hit. I didn't see the first plane hit because I was inside; for the second I enjoyed a surreal experience when the south tower suddenly erupted in sound and flame and I felt amazed I could feel the heat of it. The crowd bursting into screams, scattering, dropping shit everywhere as we ran for our lives. Debris was dropping down, so with a coworker following I ran down Fulton toward Broadway using the hotel as protection from whatever was coming down. Thinking the explosion was the end of it seems shortsighted now, but at the time many of us just stayed in the area once it was 'safe' to stop running and turned to watch the burning again. That's why I was still standing down there when the last thing I imagined would happen did, and we were running again only this time from a freaking avalanche of what used to be a skyscraper. After I and one of the other assistant managers walked uptown to the 70's off York where I lived, I opened my apartment door to a very pregnant wife who had no idea if I was alive or dead for the past several hours. My oldest child was born nine days later. I now have a second who might never have been and I can't imagine such a world or want to. It took a couple of years for it to sink in how it messed me up; I got to where the stress was making me throw up in the morning before work. Almost twenty years later and I still get bent about it, even though I've laughed at some 9/11 jokes in the years since. Something about knowing you just narrowly escaped death but you also witnessed those not as lucky. The picture in my avatar is the top of Building 5 where Borders was located, below the Merrill Lynch offices. The Deutsche Bank is in the background. Taken by my mother-in-law from an office window in the Woolworth Building about two weeks after.

It’s easy for someone that was there earlier on the same day to say “I could’ve died”, but honestly, everyone within a week could’ve died if a series of seismic or oceanic activities took place that expedited the eruption.

Omg this channel is addicting! Mr. Ballen is binge worthy. 💀
DEFINITELY!
Have you seen his main channel?
@@gopats15miller14 yes I have. Binge watch the hell out of it.
Yes , and it's stories that I watch with my two teenage kids , we enjoy it together, thanks Mr Ballen
Careful. Some of his stuff is terrifying
You are one very lucky gentleman. Glad you survived.
Thank you for sharing your story.. 20 years out and I think the event is becoming more of a distant memory instead of remembering the tragedy and praying for those who senselessly lost theirs live that fateful morning. It was not your time..I am glad you survived and lived to tell about it.
I'm from Nz and I actually live in Whakatane and White Island is situated just off the shore from here and it's where you go from to go on the White Island Tours, I can truly say 100% that the day this happened was and will always be 1 of the saddest and darkest moments in New Zealand history and I still think and feel so much pain and sadness in my heart and mind for all the lost souls and all the injured people and their families and friends that have been affected by this extremely sad event, I send my love and wish you all the best in your time of grieving and healing, Kia Kaha 💗💗💗 Also thank you Mr Ballen for being very respectful and keeping with facts, I no my Countryman would app this too, and thanks for giving me something to look forward to watching, your channel is the shizzzzz ( a.k.a the bomb) 👌👍
I was just searching for something to watch. Perfect timing.
I love it when that happens!
I try to stay off of youtube for a couple of days here and there to see if I can get more than one MrBallen video at a time. When I first found his channel I watched every single one of his videos over 3 nights. Only bad thing about that is that now I have to wait for him to upload another! He is an amazing story teller.
@@captainkylie2458 Breathlessly waiting here too...WWWAAAYYYY too often XD
I can’t get enough of this channel and MrBallen’s story telling. Absolutely amazing.

Great minds think alike. I'm doing the same. Lol

Great idea! Let's put off doing the laundry. Thanks for the excuse-I know I still have to do it today. But not yet!
Can’t think of any other way I’d want to spend all day, literally 6 hours-listening to his stories and staring at his face 😊
great story delivery, thank you so much for not over dramatizing this, the way you told this is perfect for helping us remember those lost on that fateful day.
This was such a sad story to hear about. I'm not sure if it's his footage or someone else's, but in one video you can hear how scared everyone is, especially when they realize there's still people on the volcano when it erupted.
only 1 minute in and i can already tell it’s gonna be a good one

I live in Whakatane, I was at the heads (where boats launch to sea) at the time of the eruption. I'll never forget the sound that's embedded in my head of when it erupted, so many lives lost. Hayden was a regular customer of mine, his body has never been found. Rip to every soul taken and I wish so much strength on those who survived 💕
The few dislikers (compared to so many likers) are probably just jealous of the popularity of this channel because there is absolutely NOTHING to dislike of Mr.Ballen's videos!

I'm sure I'm not the only one who appreciates that not only do you admit when you've made a mistake and then let us know what the facts really are, but you're compassionate towards family members who are pained by a video and so you graciously remove what you termed the "offending" content. We need more people like you in this world.

Interesting, intriguing, dark and mysterious stories presented by the best storyteller since Mark Twain!
New Zealander here. Thank you for giving this tragic story the respect it deserves. It was so sad. I remember thinking that my brother could have been out there because he's an avid fisherman who fished in the area frequently (he wasn't thankfully)
I live in New Zealand & remember seeing this for real. Some people that survived are still in recovery today. Two people were never found. It was pretty hard to watch, knowing people who only just got out alive.
Talk the like button into a skydiving trip. Then before he heads out be sure to replace the parachute in his backpack with confetti
Or with pots and pans like in the old cartoons.
Haha. Reminds me of a hike my friends and I took to a creek. After drinking the beer, I put some really cool rocks into Danni's backpack (with the empty cans) and when she hurled it onto her back she asked Damn, wtf? I said it's the beer. She then carried it back to the car for me.
@David Wylie
That is a good one! I can picture what a fun micro-second that could be.

I remember when this happened. Awful.
I've recently heard there are lawsuits flying around because of it. I don't get how a person can sue someone or an entity because their family member walked into the caldera of an active volcano and it exploded.
It was awful I feel for the people that lost family and were injured but you can't take it out on a tour guide

I just think it's a great way for me and my two teenage children to enjoy some time together, thank you for the stories Mr Ballen!!
The tourists on this island from the Royal Caribbean Line were never told the volcano was at a Level 2 until they were already deep onto the island and were told the walk would be cut short by the tour guide due to the volcano moving to a Level 3.
That is the perfect example of something looking so amazing yet terrifying at the same time.
Dear John, I love your stories. Awesome relaxation for me. Thanks so much.
Just watched the Netflix documentary on this subject and when it started I thought.. “Hey Mr Ballen told me about this
So "GO INSIDE, GO INSIDE!", but also, "we're gonna keep circling the island rather than getting the fuck directly away from it".
They are heroes - they went back to the jetty and rescued several badly burnt victims and got them back to the mainland for help a long time before any official rescue effort was made.
My ex's family have their homestead directly opposite this volcano, on the mainland. Their orchard grew some of the most delicious fruit I've ever eaten, because their soil is drenched in volcanic minerals. From a volcano out at sea. That should tell you how often it erupts.
This story made big news here in Australia. So sad. Another great story John.
I usually don't watch the video because I usually play these clips when I have other stuff to do on my own. So I always miss the secret. But it says a lot about this chap because even just listening to these stories, I can easily picture what I am hearing. Great work Bru and keep 'em coming

It’s great to see that my favourite RUclipsr has made a video in one of the most recent disasters in my country because I didn’t think it was much known but it’s cool that my fav RUclipsr actually has made a video of something that wasn’t far from where I live in New Zealand
This incident was so saddening. I lived half an hour from white island when this happened in nearby Galatea, New Zealand. I remember the island was smoking for days. Love your channel Mr Ballen. Have you considered starting a podcast using the same topics you video on, I know myself and others would definitely listen. Keep up the awesome job. Keep it real.
As someone from New Zealand this is a sad event, but Mr B is the best story teller out, keep it up brother. Love your work

Hello from Cyprus Mr Ballen! Love your videos!
I am from NZ and have been to White Island. The island is beautiful in its starkness. Thankfully our trip was uneventful. When I heard of the eruption I couldn't believe people were on the island at that time .
I really enjoy your RUclips channel. It’s obvious that you do a lot of research prior to presenting each episode.

Thank you for doing this story. It was just awful what those poor people went through and are still going through. 😢
John reminds me my high school American History teacher who I still remember today. Haven’t seen him or been in his class for a decade but I vividly recall his lessons. He was very anti-American and shared with us very little known information left out of history curriculum to students. He was incredibly interesting and taught very well, similar to John’s style of story telling. He’s the only teacher I can still remember the curriculum from! The way a teacher orates truly does effect the memory of the lessons.

It’s easy for someone that was there earlier on the same day to say “I could’ve died”, but honestly, everyone within a week could’ve died if a series of seismic or oceanic activities took place that expedited the eruption.
