  • Help your stiff hips with bone on bone hip arthritis become looser so you can stand and walk easier.
These 4 stretches are part exercise too. That’s because stretches alone are not enough to get the best mobility in your hips. These are more stretches than exercises and they are not very tiring at all.
These stretches are a great place to start if you’re finding us for the first time. But don’t count on these to cure your hip arthritis. It took you years to get it, so it’s likely going to take you months to years to fix your hips if the joint is not too far gone.
We’ve got many videos with exercises, tips and advice on how to help your bone on bone hip arthritis.

Do you feel any pain when hiking? If so, do you take pain medications? I am 68. When I perform these exercises, I feel some soreness not really pain, and no clicking. Is that normal? I take Advil as needed.

Hi Ruby, no actually there’s no pain at all when I hike. Naturally I always use 2 hiking sticks and am with my daughter lol. Yes there is discomfort other times of the day but what helps is yoga and lots of stretching 😊

Hi David , my name is Bob Lappin and I am an 81 year old male with a right hip replacement 2o years ago. Recently my left hip has caused a lot of pain and difficulty walking. I was thinking replacement 2 coming up. I found your bone-on-bone video and have been doing it for a number of days. It worked with me like a charm and in a few days I could walk without pain for at least 20 minutes. I plan to continue doing the exercises, but would like to do more strengthening. You mentioned you had some in your videos down below but I can’t find them. Could you point them out please. I want to thank you so much for your help which I will continue to use. My spirits have been lifted enormously. Thanks again and thank you for your generosity. Peace and gratitude, Bob Lappin

Hi, I don't have arthritis but I did have an acetabular fracture due to hard knee impact in an accident, requiring some gnarly reconstructive hip and pelvis surgery on the dislocated side. Experienced much asymmetrical muscle atrophy during recovery and still have pain long after. Am finding your videos/ exercises very helpful with this, much more so than anything physical therapists have coached me toward. Am learning here to be more gentle to myself. Grateful for what I'm finding here, thank you!

I just found your video after searching for the best stretches for hip arthritis. You are a godsend. This pain in my right hip has gotten awful. I had 1 cortisone shot and it didn't work for more than 3 weeks. I don't want replacement surgery. I saw your video that tells the 2 warning signs that replacement surgery might be needed and I'm not in that category thank God. So I've already started doing your stretches. I don't know if I have hip bursitis or early arthritis but I started to encounter problems around 10 years ago which made me give up running. I think a combination of muscle imbalance from cycling, not the best running technique and an infection which affected part of my glute muscles all contributed to this.
I have been following your hip exercises and stretches and walking and I am finding I am able to run without irritating the joint. Thanks so much for your wonderful advice and channel!

Dr. David. Thank you very much for these videos. I m a cricket umpire and when I am adjudicating matches I have to move from square leg to the non-strikers end at interval with my other colleague who is an umpire. The match usually last for 4 hours. I hardly can bend down to pick up the balls or put back dislodged bails back on the stumps. When I get home from cricket I can hardly walk and the pain is so excruciating. However, your video on bone on bone exercise has helped me a lot and I am looking for improvement in my hip pain and strength and mobility in the coming years ahead. Thank you very much for your instructions and advice

I can't begin to tell you how many videos from other PT's and MD's say to avoid knee-to-chest exercises because it pinches the groin. As for me, I have bone-on-bone arthritis, and I don't feel pain in the groin when I do knee-to-chest, but I definitely feel lots of pain if I try to cross the knee over to the other side.

I only get outside deep Right hip pain mostly when I sit for over 15mins, not so much when or after walking yet .
I’ve been told I have moderate oesteoarthitis with a significant bone spur on the Right hip acetabulum .
It’s so uncomfortable to sit on even after a very short period of time or 15 mins ..
How can I relieve or get rid of this very pain?
I need to be able to sit at night to watch a little TV after a hard day .
By the way , I love ❤️ your videos

Also; the center muscle of my right glute is tight and sore. I keep rolling on it to try relaxing it but it doesn't work. Do you have any suggestions for my right side only situation. Sometimes my right quad gets tight also. Thanks.

I just started today to fix my left osteoarthritis hip. I had problems with a few of the exercises in getting my glutes to work. I’m wondering about laying on my stomach and doing a straight leg lift. I get a lot of pull on the back of my leg and some in my glutes. I have no backside so it’s a little hard to really feel them tightening because there is not a lot of tone there. I’d appreciate some feedback.

Hello Dr. I am. Shashikala from India , Bangalore , I am 73 years old. I have faithfully followed your exercises for painful knee arthritis ,and has been so helpful to reduce the pain. Thanks to you.
I recently had a hair line fracture on my left foot for which I was asked walk on my heel to avoid put weight on the injury. I have recovered from it, But now I have severe severe inner thigh pain, when I climb stairs I have stabbing pain in my thigh , all I can do is take a paracetamol and rest.
What could be the problem, is it the muscle , nerve or bone that is causing the intense pain? How can I get relief?
    Thank you Dr. David.

As well as what is now bone on bone hip arthritis I fractured my spine in a bad fall nearly 18 months ago when it was discovered that I had a previous healed lumber fracture (T9) from some time before after another fall, so L1 & 2 compression fractures. The arthritis has been progressing through this. I'm now unable to walk far, partly through my hip but also start to get a lot of pain in my back. It seems to be one or the other and worst both together, especially towards the end of the day. My question is; Can these exercises take into account both conditions and still be beneficial?

Hello Dr. David! I came upon your videos last night and am excited to try your stretches and exercises. I am 54 and had my right hip replaced last October 2022 and it’s doing so well and while I am happy with the outcome, I am totally crushed….yes crushed….that 2 months ago I began feeling my left hip have the same type pain that is progressing so fast and now have terrible pain in the groin area and popping/grinding sounds. At first I thought just from over working and favoring that hip for 3 years. I was surprised my X-ray stated mild to moderate OA because it is an excruciating pain. I tried to tighten my butt muscles on that side when watching but cannot isolate it without using my thigh. I can do it fine on my surgery side but not the other. Any tips?

Hey there! Sorry to hear that you are having another hip issue so young! :-( It may be a good idea to check for a tear of the labrum in that hip as well. This can create pain with grinding and clicking in the hip. As far as tips to get better at using the glutes, it just takes a lot of practice. Try activating them in different positions to see which position is the easiest for you to isolate. Hope this helps and here is some information on labral tears in case you would like to learn more about that:

    • @epmanualphysicaltherapy
      @epmanualphysicaltherapy  2 года назад +2

Hey Sylvio! That's great that your knee pain has improved! But sorry you've developed groin muscle pain :-(
It sounds like you're overusing the groin muscles. It could be that you're tightening the groin muscles when doing the walking technique. You should focus on using the glute muscles when walking. If you cannot shut off your groin muscles when walking, then you need to lighten how intensely you use your glute muscles when walking so the groin muscles do not tighten.

Hey Sassy 53, as many times as you can tolerate without irritating the hip and feeling worse. Think of exercise just like medicine. You've got to find the right dose so that it's most effective for you. Doing too little won't make much of a difference and doing too much can be harmful. You can judge what's right for you by making sure you feel well doing it rather than feeling worse.

Do these exercises also help by rheumatoide arthritis? 🤔

    • @epmanualphysicaltherapy
      @epmanualphysicaltherapy  Год назад

Hi Kalsang, This is a great question! Rheumatoid arthritis is treated differently as it is an autoimmune disease. While these exercises can be beneficial for many individuals with rheumatoid arthritis, the exercises must be done when you are not flared up and if you are in a flare up you should not attempt these exercises at all.
In addition to exercise, rheumatoid arthritis management often involves a comprehensive treatment plan that may include lifestyle modifications and other therapies. Therefore, it is important to work closely with a healthcare professional to address your individual needs and concerns.
Please remember that the information provided here is general in nature, and it is always advisable to consult with a qualified healthcare provider who can evaluate your specific condition and provide personalized recommendations.
We wish you all the best in your recovery! We'd love to hear how you are doing as you progress.🙌 Please take care!🧡

@@epmanualphysicaltherapy Dear Dr. David, thank you sooo much for your really helpfull answer! My acute rheuma attack got worse after my arrival in Thailand six weeks ago. The rheumatologist here said I shouldn't worry and do exercises because the CRP is 28 mg/l only. However the extreme stiffness makes every move strenuous and painful, I'm walking in "slow motion". Special exercises for the hips made it even worse. After I changed my diet to vegetable,"an apple a day", fish and a lot of supplements (I also quit sugar) the pain in shoulders, joints and fingers became less. I'm also much better in aircondition malls and will travel to a warm DRY country when I'm able to do so. My only exercise is now only an hour slowly walking in the malls. I take sometimes diclofenac to give me a break from reality. 😉 I have to do all decisions by myself and your answer did help me a lot. Thank you & best wishes 🙏💐

Hey Laney! One thing to consider is that at El Paso Manual Physical Therapy we specialize in helping people avoid unnecessary injections & surgery while traditional physical therapy tends to focus on healing post-surgery. Because of this, the information we provide will be different from traditional physical therapy advice. Also, everyone's body composition is different so what works for one person may not work for another. What's important is finding options that work for you as you know your body better than anyone. In order to find a solution you may need to try different techniques and exercises that you find beneficial.
