What a discovery! As a former professional dancer/performer/teacher/choreographer for 60 years, the wear and tear on the muscle/joint structure is huge. All the dance genre (ballet/modrn/jazz/tap) have taken their toll even though my entire body spent most of my 90 years in amazingly good shape. Yes..90 ! Just within the last year or so, my one hip has succumbed to arthritis and bone reduction. AND PAIN! Your video seemed to be speaking just to me and my current pain problem. One thing of interest is that due to the constant physical work, my glutes have always been hard as a rock and supportive. Only recently, the pain factor has caused a change of use and balance so as to allow the glutes to recede and become non-functional.. Your description seemed to be speaking just to me. I will not do the hip replacement at this age and all of your comments resonated with me, big time! I sit (at my computer) way too many hours a day and your suggestions about the 'sleeping position/pillow', muscle massage, glute-tightening all make sense. Thank you thank you. I expect to improve soon, as I will begin your simple. logical focus immediately. Your clear and direct approach is like a light bulb going off in my head. Where's my water bottle?

Hey Sylvia, I was so excited to read that we both have a few things in common. Sorry that its not only the dance, performing, teaching, choreographing but also the clear evidence of our hip beginning to break down and talk to us that we share in common. You were/are such a fabulous dancer/singer/performer and I recall seeing you with Mary/Dick Show and much more. I'm sure you've had a grand life and all that dance pounding did impact your body but I hope you too feel so fortunate to have had such thrilling, full years through dance and wouldn't have changed it. You do have some years on me but its just numbers and I just wanted to say hello. I too felt Dr. David gave the clearest, most logical, understandable instruction and I hope you will get as much relief as I have already. All the best to you Sylvia! Clara/CB

I was bone on bone and nothing helped me except surgery. I would not be able walk now without the surgery on both hips. It really wasn’t bad at all and I was walking around 3 weeks later with no pain.

  • @sportysbusiness

5 years ago I was told I needed a hip replacement. The head of the femur looked like a mountain range and there was zero cartilage on both sides. It got so bad I could hardly walk. I was 47...
I went plant based, after an immediate decrease in inflammation from eliminating all processed foods and sugar, my hip got progressively worse. After 2 years I went keto and then carnivore combined with intermittent fasting. Huge improvement immediately. I combined this with traction exercises to get fluid to the joint and trigger point therapy to soften the associated soft tissue pain as my body protected the joint. Again, that worked to a point and I had definite improvements. But the game changer, 4 months ago I bought a rife machine. Within a few weeks I had rotation without grinding, within a few months the rotation improved and the pain decreased. I currently walk 5 to 10km a day with my dogs and am almost pain free. The body CAN self heal, don't let your drug pusher tell you otherwise.

I have "severe" osteoarthritis in my left hip & L4-L5 (low back). Officially diagnosed in 2020 but had pain & stiffness starting around mid 2018. I was told I had to have a hip replacement but currently that is not possible as I do not have insurance. (long story) I came upon this channel just a few days ago & I have been exploring the Hip Pain topics. I can't believe I am getting better advice & information from a PT on RUclips than what I've gotten in the last 6 years from my actual medical providers. Mind blown!🤯 Providing me with the details as why I should or should not do something is very valuable to me. I am 63 & feel 83 & even though my pain ranges from a 7-12 around the clock, I am not on any narcotics. I manage my pain with anti-inflammatories, heat, ice & joint supplements. I stay home 98% of the time due to my pain & physical limitations. I have to use a wheelchair 👩‍🦽when I leave the house as walking just kills me. If I try an outing with my family my pain & stiffness is off the wall & then spend several recouping. 🛌
So... I am going to try some of the suggestions on this channel and see if I can get better pain relief. Wish me luck! 🍀

I think you're correct. Recommending surgery for a 40-year-old sounds very premature. I have a friend who had surgery on both hips in her 40s. She will probably need another one before the end of her life - they usually last about 20 years - which will put her in her 60s. So, I hope she can last that long since I don't think they can do a third one. I would do exercises, massage, just about anything before I would consent to surgery. Western medicine is way too focused on surgery and medication.

I’ve been doing a lot of these things just by self-discovery. You have to be very self aware. When I get into certain positions, I can feel more spacing in my hip joints. Pointing my toes and knees outward provides much relief. Squeezing the glutes give me instant relief as well. I do leg extensions to actually strengthen my quads then massage as well with my gun. Monster walks strengthen my outer part of my legs too and help ease the pain. Putting ankle weights on my affected leg and letting it dangle off a step while bearing all my weight on the other leg helps too. Great video, as all these things should be beneficial. I was in excruciating pain a few months ago and after sticking with these exercises and altering my diet some, I have definitely minimized my pain. I used to cramp and seize up at night to where I couldn’t sleep but an hour or two. Now, I can rest with minimal pain. I do feel symptoms come back at the end of my work day which indicates I still have some stamina work on which should help me get through the entire day but I can tell I’m on the right track.

Try things, be analytical, learn about the muscles, watch RUclips and find wonderful advice and physios like this one! I used to put all my healing in the hands of others whose job I thought it was but we also have a responsibility to look after ourselves. And no one can “feel” for us. For anyone out there going through this like me, don’t delay anymore to pay attention to your body and be involved.

Thank you so much. I really appreciate this and other of your videos I have been checking out this morning. My hip is so far gone that I have to have hip replacement surgery. My rheumatologist (I have rheumatoid arthritis) has always said I can’t have joint replacement surgery because it simply won’t work for me. However he now says I absolutely have to have hip joint replacement. The senior radiologist (family connection) who managed my work up said that my hip is as bad as it gets and that my pain level would be a 9/10. He was right. However in the past 12 months I have had 12 UTIs so have not been able to even see surgeon. Turns out I have bladder diverticulitis. Who knew such a thing existed??? However I am now seeing a top hip surgeon on 12 March. In the meantime, I am working hard to give myself the best rehab possible. I have a good physiotherapist (or at least I believe so), but I am now following all of your advice. I am 76 and can only have Panadol for pain, having had horrible side effects from a pain patch. I therefore have to manage pain and sleep primarily through exercise and relaxation techniques. I am just so grateful I found you on U-Tube. I am highly exercise motivated and I just love your exercises and tips. Absolutely no trouble to implement these continually throughout the day. I have also just sent away for a massage gun. One day I will provide feedback on my successful post-operation rehab, but it could be a long way off. Meanwhile, I wish you all the very best. This seems the only way I can offer a heartfelt gratitude practice.

She will watch it I know as she does not want to have the surgery, but feels she need to at some point. It's amazing that I am now seeing this video after today....

I am 68 years old and have had knee pain, then hip pain, and now hip/ knee pain. I can’t tell which is causing which. I’m happy to have found someone who is more into a natural solution. I have been to a physical therapist who has helped with some exercises, but I think some of them are counter productive. I know the glutes are important to build, but sometimes it’s hard to isolate them from the thigh muscles. I am going to try your suggestions to see if they help. Thank you for helping people!

I put a 10 lb. ankle weight around my ankle then step up on my stairs with the opposite leg and let my foot with the wright dangle down for 2 minutes. This opens the hip joint slightly and relieves the knee joint. Do it a couple times a day and see if you get any relief of the joints.

I use turmeric and ginger in my smoothies (Never had much luck with the other supplements you mentioned) and use the massage gun on the side of my hip and it is a miracle how well this works, I was told I needed two hip replacments 25 years ago and I found these techniques on my own. I rarely have days when my hip aches a little but it does not last especially if I use the gun. Turmeric Root with black pepper powder to enhance the effectiveness of the Turmeric and drinking ginger tea is a God sent. I also attribute my healing to not eating all of the time (Intermittent Fasting) will take the pressure off your hip since you lose weight :)

I stumbled across your videos last night and soooo glad I did! I'm 60yrs young and was diagnosed with bone on bone hip arthritis in late 2020 (the consultant said edge loading on the right hip?). For the past 18months I have been trying to stay active, doing stretching and strengthening as per the p/t advised. He said that my hip was quite strong and to go away and do what I've been doing and said he wouldn't need to see me again. This video has educated me about massaging your quads as recently I have noticed more of a pinching in my groin which shoots down to my knee. I'm hoping that its just tight or shortened muscles? I shall e watching all your videos about bone on bone as there is some light at the end of the tunnel and the operating table hopefully seems a long way off yet! Thank you for you very informative and helpful videos.

I’m not a doctor and this is an older video, but my hip pain is now.
About hydrating- I’ve heard from good, trustworthy doctors that a bit of Celtic salt before a glass of water helps keep water in your body rather than just running through. Just a small bit crunched with your teeth prior to each glass. I think it helps. No swollen feet and not going to the bathroom as often. Celtic salt also has minerals and is not bleached and processed like table salt such as Morton’s.
Just a suggestion. Again, I’m not a doctor.
Now, back to the exercises. Thanks for this post!

Great information! It is amazing to me how some people shun added sugar in foods, but will still eat tons of fruit. Because it's "natural" sugar. Once broken down, the body doesn't know the difference between sugar from an apple or a slice of bread or a container of yogurt or a banana or a Snicker's bar. Fructose is still fructose and glucose is still glucose, and it's all 100% inflammatory. . People will defend their drug of choice until the end.

I had a hip replacement 4 weeks ago. I can't believe I didn't do it sooner. Within 3 weeks I felt like a new person! Why Did I try all of this other stuff when I could have been better in 3 weeks? If I'd only known..

I totally appreciate your video explaining the possibilities on the causes of hip pain and the way to avoid hip replacement. I got shot years ago and have been dealing with the ramifications of the injuries sustained to my spine. As of lately I have been suffering horrific pain around my right hip when I stand. I subscribed and hope to get help with my hip problem.

Great video. I was recently diagnosed with OA in both hips. For 35 years, running was my favorite activity. The doctor recommended I switch from running to low-impact activities such as cycling, swimming, and eliptical. Do you agree?

I am so glad I came across your video! It's is so informative and you are really great at explaining everything. I started having hip pain about years ago and recently went to do different surgeons that said I need to have my hip replaced. I'm doing all I can to avoid it and will try your suggestions. I've never heard about moving your legs in and out to loosen it up and at first it was difficult to do on the side where my osteoarthritis is and bone on bone but the more I kept doing it the better it felt! Also doing the butt squeezes and relaxing the quads are helping too. I can't thank you enough for this video!

Hi Dr. David! I didn't quite get your last name. 😊 I just wanted you to know that you gave me a lot of hope for my hips. I so don't want surgery and I'm in a lot of pain. I loved that I do the pillow as you said just naturally because of the pain. I also rub down my legs now and then and even do the butt squeezes, thinking that maybe they would help somehow. But I certainly don't do them all day, every day, but I will from now on. I just knew I had to do some type of stretches for muscles to help with the pain. I'm so glad I found you on RUclips and I'll do the other things you mentioned. I'm so excited that there may be help out there because I've been so discouraged. I've subscribed and will be watching some of your other videos!!! You're very nice to do this video for us sufferers and you seem to be passionate about what you recommend!!! I'm excited to get busy with all these suggestions!!! Thanks so very much!!! 😊

I enjoyed the 2 days I went for a 45 minute relaxing walk.
Preparing for a trial tens unit placement as opposed to the alternative 3 cages and 6 screws that would be required if the pain isn’t better controlled. L3,4,5
MRI and 4 injections for pain, chiropractic completed.
After the walks I spent the next 48 hours In much increased pain from my foot to my hip, left side.
So walking is off the table.
Supplements, keto diet and water in.
About 4 hours sleep is all I average,
    Really hope the stimulator works
    Great information

A most comprehensive guide, I’m at the early stages of pain, and am still very flexible, ( possibly due to yoga practice) scans have revealed extensive arthritis in both hips. Mostly they are causing back pain. I’m hoping to keep surgery away. Thanks for your excellent guide, it is super that you explain the pit falls such as the pillow being kicked away. I can relate to that.
My buttocks feel sore too, the clinching is simple yet so effective.

Hey you're welcome @efitz3397! It's great to hear that you're still flexible - that's definitely consistent with being in the early stages of hip arthritis. Get obsessed with getting more glute strength!! That will help you remain healthy so that you can avoid surgery!

I am so glad I saw this video. I am definitely going to try all the suggested actions to be taken. Just one question, a physiotherapist told me to sleep with straight legs instead of folded up like you have shown as it apparently effects the major muscles in the butt area. Which method would be the better one? I have also found that my affected leg thigh muscles are very stiff. I am currently doing a little bit of exercises to strengthen the muscles around the hip. What exercises do you recommend if any? If there are any exercises that can be done to strengthen the hip muscles, won't you please make a video to demonstrate them. Thanks for the video. Your presentation was great.

    • @epmanualphysicaltherapy
      @epmanualphysicaltherapy  2 года назад +2

Hey Frank! The best advice is to get comfortable when you sleep. That usually means your hips and knees will be slightly bent. The position you rest in is less likely to affect your joints that the way you strengthen your muscles by using them in your everyday motions. In other words, you're doing more to harm your hips if you're using the wrong muscles while your awake than you are while resting at night. Does that make sense?

Wow! I am so very glad that I came across your video. I have watched a great many for my bone-on-bone hip arthritis - both sides, and there is bone growth where the cartilage used to be :( but yours is by far the most thorough and well explained I have seen. I am in Canada so hip replacement is covered by our government health insurance but I am not ready for that. I have been faithfully doing clamshells, hip/glute bridges, and walking on a treadmill, for a long time and it helps a lot but I am still tired of the stiffness and soreness and my hip giving way sometimes. The hardest thing for me is climbing stairs, so I think my thighs must actually be too weak - so shouldn't I be strengthening them? If so, what is the best exercise for that? (I guess the thigh muscles could still be too tight even if not sufficiently strong). Thank you!

    • @epmanualphysicaltherapy
      @epmanualphysicaltherapy  2 года назад

Hey Julia! We're happy to hear that you're dedicated to addressing your hip problem naturally. It's great that you've had success with strengthening your glutes with clamshells and bridges and walking. You've got to progress the strengthening even more. It may be time to add weights or resistance bands to those exercises. You might even try some light squats. This will naturally work your thigh muscles the right way. Based on what you wrote about your thigh muscles feeling weak, you probably need to get stronger all around - but make sure to lead with your glute strength so that you can set up the long-term improvements in your hip arthritis. We encourage people to avoid direct strengthening of the thigh muscles. They will indirectly strengthen as you focus on getting stronger glutes. Most people underestimate the resistance part - You MUST add more resistance to the glute exercises to get more improvements.

@@epmanualphysicaltherapy This is so helpful; thank you so much for your feedback and suggestions! I have found that I can engage my glutes when walking on the treadmill but still need work on perfecting that and I think I still have room for improvement in strengthening my glutes generally, but perhaps will want to add a form of resistance as things improve. I have been watching your other videos and will start to incorporate the exercises and the - good - stretches! Lots of good information! I'm still a little doubtful about the stair climbing but I'll be patient and see how things progress, am hopeful! Can't thank you enough - wonderful work! ❤
