      With the rate real-time machine learning visual construction is going, probally only a couple more years for big improvements. Because get this: this is a machine learning algorithm that calculates everything. This kind of visuals was seen to be nearly a decade away already, but machine learning has speed it up significantly. Like a little brain in the graphics card that turns fuzzy calculations (what you see between when RTX is switched on and off) into the crisp stuff you see.

    Ray tracing is the future. When it's all running properly and universal it will in one stroke solve all lighting issues, all shadow issues and all reflection issues. Devs won't have to spend hundreds of hours faking it like they do now, and it will all be accurate in a way lighting and reflections aren't currently. It will just work (though obviously tweaked for artistic reasons).
    However, right now, there is no need to bother with it. It's still quite limited and the faking that the devs do is really impressive. That's why there isn't as much difference as people expected. Ray traced lighting and shadows has been in video games for 15 years or more, just not real-time. Pre-baked as it is in Half Life 2.
    It is the future, it's just not worth worrying about. It's almost more of a developer tool.

    As someone who has worked PR before, I really have to give Nvidia my compliments. I don't even think the Quake II RTX is that impressive looking. But they went out of their way to give super stubborn streamers like Vinnie a free RTX card under the pretext of "letting them play and promote the game." Sure that's the most prominent reason. However, would VInnie have ever at any point in the next decade have upgraded to RTX technology without this ploy? Hell no. And that's the true genius of this whole thing. It's not the RTX tech demo, it's the gullible streamers like our dear Vinnie getting tricked into upgrading.
    Hats off Nvidia, color me impressed.

    This new lighting/card system seems in line with a lot of games trying to look toyetic or clay-like with their shaders, but that doesn't really work with Quake II's gritty, creepy aesthetic. RTX right now would probably work better with cel-shading, and something along the lines of the Link's Awakening remake. Based on this alone I wouldn't rush to make every new game rely on this kind of card which isn't yet widely available.

  • @Mephaistus
    @Mephaistus 5 лет назад +4

    RTX to me is kinda like the PhysX debacle, unfinished Tech that that adds minor extras while using alot of resources to make it work right. Cant we stop getting good tech getting stuck in its infancy just to get a quick buck in? RTX is just not ready yet in my opinion anyway.

    • @microgamestation
      @microgamestation 5 лет назад +2

      First off, PhysX was Nvidia proprietary where as DXR is not. Secondly, current cutting edge graphics technology is attempting to replicate a ray traced look using vuage approximations, like ambient occlusion. Ray tracing in real time is still primitive, however it's truly the ultimate goal in real time 3D graphics, as it will enable even greater levels of real time photorealism. It's no fad, just early days.

They are out there in their early stages, but if its gonna be something good or people will want remains to be seen, yet its still not something you should throw money at just because it sounds like a good idea. So far this stream showed that it is still too early. Games on older engine slike Quake 2 pretty much show that games not designed around this sort of lightning benefit from it at all. And who knows how long its gonna take for this technology to be useable in modern games, 5 ~ 10 years? Sounds all waste of money and effort if you ask me.

      You probably need an unofficial patch to put them in. Since the original soundtrack was played from the CD versus being installed like the rest of the game. (You can actually play the game, without the CD in the computer. It'd work just as fine, but it wouldn't have music).
      Thus they probably didn't bother to include them in the Steam version or there were complications in usage rights.
      Such a shame. The soundtrack is really good and you could argue Quake 2 isn't Quake 2 without it.

    Watching this live, I was very disappointed in chat's reactions.
    It seems we've become so spoiled we can't be impressed with the concept of something unless it looks indisputably better than everything else.
    This wasn't necessarily meant to be impressive because of how it looked, it was meant to be impressive because they were able to apply ray-tracing to an old game, and make just about every part of the graphics be a result of strictly ray-tracing, rather than how some games have been doing it (using ray-tracing only for very minor parts, while still using the "fake" stuff for the majority of everything else).
    The idea wasn't to fully remaster Quake 2. The idea was to show what ray tracing is capable of on its own on an older game without too much else being changed.

    • @VRJosh
      @VRJosh 5 лет назад +13

      I think the problem with using it on Quake 2 is that the original, artistic lighting in QUAKE 2 was so good, that the updated realistic lighting just ruined the aesthetic in many scenes. In many rooms, it looked objectively worse with the realistic RTX lighting, despite being technically superior. I think it's a good lesson for developers that they still need to take a lot of artistic license to make the lighting in their games look good, because realism isn't always the best look.
      It's definitely going to help games with a realistic aesthetic look more realistic tho!

    • @LetLiveEverything
      @LetLiveEverything 5 лет назад +6

      @@VRJosh I agree. In my opinion, what they were trying to do was offer a game with simplistic geometry and design so that it was capable of running on more peoples systems. Remember, they aren't technically charging for this. You just have to own the original Quake 2 in order to play all the levels.
      It may not have been the best choice, but it's relatively easy to run than something with more complex geometry, so more people are able to see what RTX is all about for themselves without suffering 5 FPS.

    • @VRJosh
      @VRJosh 5 лет назад +2

      @@LetLiveEverything I think a game like the original Crysis might actually benefit a lot from RTX since it was trying so hard to push realism. @@Blurredborderlines No, just fads. RTX at least has potential in the future despite it's meme status now (which Nvidia's actions/advertising haven't helped, with this being a prime example). VR is in the same category as motion controls and 3D TV; a novelty/fad disguised as an industry leap.
      Are there a few games that take a decent advantage of VR? Yes, just like motion controls and 3D. Is it something that's going to redefine the entire industry? Not in the slightest, even when it becomes accessible. It's thus far mostly been used to create watered down versions of preexisting games that happen to have tracked headset or motion controls attached. Unless you're just that obsessed with cutting yourself off from the world, it's a pointless addition.

      @Intra Ignis But print, audio, and live media still exist... TV didn't literally phase out all other forms of entertainment, so this is a pretty shitty example. You can get through life without watching TV.
      Other than fancy lighting RTX added literally nothing to this game, and whether or not the end result looks better than the original is very debatable. Nvidia's attempts to show off RTX make it look like a novelty... just like VR. It's a party trick that gets stale once you get used to it, your defensive asshurt be damned. And I say this as someone who has used both.

      @@lerquian1970 The difference is that games with shitty graphics can still be functional as videogames. RTX/VR don't change that. Just like how a ton of VR and other "high tech" games are either glorified tech demos or just watered down versions of preexisting games.
      At most, I'll say the RTX will eventually actually be meaningful when the tech is ACTUALLY there and we aren't just forcing it into a 20-year-old game for no reason. Nothing about something like Beat Saber or the various Flight sims and FPS games that support VR really requires VR other than the fact that the devs decided to make it VR. Very little if anything of value is gained, and a massive part of the audience is lost.
      VR isn't like TV, it's like 3DTV. It's a fad disguised as a technological leap.

    Watched a douzen of videos about it, don't see the big deal.
    Also RTX on old games like Quake 2 tends to make them uglier in my opinion. RTX tends to smooth everything like a permanent light bloom effect. It's just ugly.
    Fixed shadows are fine, you can artistically work with fix shadows, play with their density, trick the player, sculpt the look of a room with fake shadows.
    Real time lightning is not better just because it's in real time. You desperatly want real time shadows ? Go outisde.
