I still can't believe they missed the fact that everywhere- the gas station, the pools, the airport, the daycare, the brutalist hellscape, _everywhere-_ had the exact same layout as My House.
It’s fucking hilarious how quickly veteran Doom players notice changes compared to other players. It’s like having eldritch insight and you are the only one capable of perceiving the horrors.
Yes it is amazing. You can even see how much you know doom. I'm not a veteran, but I noticed so many things having played again and again and again DOOM II, Haven't modded that much exept for brutal doom and one or two things here and there.
@@velvetdraws3452my exact reaction I may not be a doom vet in the normal sense but by god the second I saw that I was like NO DOOM IS A GLORIFIED 2D GAME WHAT IS THIS!?
After watching a near 2 hour documentary on this mod explaining that it unnerves doom fanatics, then seeing a doom fanatic getting unnerved in real time just hits way different
I tried this map out a little bit (never played DOOM) and I didn't notice 90% of the things designed to fuck with you except the smoothly animated doors.
My dad (who has played a lot of Doom) played this map, then proceeded to let my 9 year old brother play too. Was hilarious to watch, and I was really impressed by the backrooms and liminal spaces vibes from this map
No like it's even more than that, its like the horror movie having a post credits scene where it goes back through all the locations in the movie but with goofy cartoon slapstick and shenanigans
I didn’t think of that. Instead of a more straight forward wording, like “happiness is something you have to fight for” which loses the meaning of it being worth it. They used “to be fought for”. To be implies that it is worth it. This wad is unbelievable
That sounds like one meaning to me. And you're just rewording it but not changing at all what it means. You can do the same when your mom says "Take the trash out" and you respond with "I have to take the trash out, and the trash needs to be taken to go out. Woah!" that's not a double meaning.
"all around me are familiar demon, worn out demons, washed out demons~ All aroun- IM BACK IN THIS FUCKING PLACE AGAIN!!! OH MY GOD! I'LL GET OUT OF HERE! AND AFTER I DO, I WILL SHOVE SOMEONES FACE UP THEIR OWN ASS!"
My favorite part of this is how you made a point of saying the music was "Etched into your brain" just as a little comment about how familiar this game is to you, and then the song CHANGED and you freaked out a little. That was just so perfect
Hearing the music change really fucked with me on my playthrough. And I IMMEDIATELY noticed the smooth doom animations. This was an absolute gem of a wad, an instant masterpiece imo.
@@adrianaslund8605 the uncanniness of the song comes from it being a _slightly wrong_ version of running from evil, which is the first song in doom 2, it also happens to be the song that most doom mods use since most modders don't replace the music tracks in their levels, which keeps running from evil as the track for the first level in a mod, this essentially means that most of the doom community has this song etched into their minds to the point it becomes familar, so the scare itself becomes stronger the more familiar you are with the original game. the map ruins this sense of familiarity by initially establishing the song as exactly the same it's always been, but then starting to twist it when the house itself starts getting weirder. it'd be like listening to the original studio version of falling in love with you on loop, but realizing on the second loop that the piano is slightly off-tune, or that the lyrics are different, and by the fifth loop, the original song is barely recognizable.
some games feel like they're trying to mimic movies, and some games feel like movies. this map feels like every second something is right behind the corner making more of it, trying to make you feel insane. like if you played this map again, you wouldn't have the same experience.
this is something unique to videogames. sure, you can make movies and videos about stuff like this, but videogames make it *tangible.* you can't replicate what a mod like this does to your head in a movie
Fun fact: The Archvile that spawned after not going into Fake Beach, is actually called a Mirrored Archvile. And is an Archvile with noclip, and somewhere around 5000000 health
Backrooms content became so boring and stale after a “canon” was being established. The whole reason why it was interesting was the mystery and feeling of discovery, which this heavily plays into.
There are 3 more secrets that weren't shown in the video. 1: Get all items in the map, get to the sercret ending, but when the secret is right in your grasp, go back and burn the house down anyway, trigger the bad ending, then go back to the road area. Doing so will give you an image of a grave with a QR code on the front of the tombstone. The QR code leads to an obituary of steven. It's not hard to connect the dots. 2: open and close a specific closet in the second house. Doing this enough times will open up a hall of concrete darkness. No music inhabits this maze. Just sheer dread. Solve the maze, and you're treated to an infinte circular staircase. 3: in multiple rooms in the concrete area, the rooms are lit up. In one is nothing. The second one holds a mega sphere. Fast and easy 200% health and armor. The third is a lot harder to get to, but it can be done. Inside it is a tv, broadcasting the inside of the room it's in. If you fiddle with the tv cord, the outlet giving the tv life comes undone. This is visible for one frame. After which, you find that all tv's in the house, including the mirrored house, are switched on, showing only static.
It's more to do with the fact that they DIDN'T open like that at first. It was all very normal up until that point. So he had tripped something to change it without even realizing.
@@Bluesit32 To add onto this, in order for such a thing to change in DooM you can't just replace the doors (at least not usually though knowing the tools that have developed with GZ this may have changed since I last looked at DooM modding). You basically have to transport the player to a completely different map with the same things without the player realizing it, which is a trick this map employs constantly with complete seamlessness. It's not adding in new entities, not swapping out entities.
@@pubcleits not completely seamless, but if you were paying very close attention, you'd definitely notice. jiggling back and forth a teleport point will make it very obvious
fun fact, had you successfully killed the hellhound, the little good boy in the smaller version of the map would've also tragically died. and vice versa
The "good dog" is the same as the hellhound, it's just that as a child the dog is big and scary but when the player grows up it becomes a friendly pet. The two brutalist houses are the same house separated by a few years of ageing by the player.
sent it to my boomer dad who was VERY into 93 DOOM and he called me maybe ten minutes later blowing out the mic on my phone. Accurate. "what in all fresh hell have you got me playing?" sorry dad.
I was looking for this comment! Seriously, they have such great chemistry. Sounds like two of your funny as hell friends that can always make you cry laugh. The "plama gun :)" keeps getting me so good
Ah, the duality of doom modding, On one hand, you have a genuinely stunning mod that uses a whole hand of visual and audio tricks to confuse, disorient and unsettle the player as well as having built an incredibly unique ambience in a game that perhaps otherwise wouldn't have been taken as seriously. And on the other hand, you have a mod that replaces the chainsaw with a lawnmower that lets you dual wield with the shotgun and replaces all the health pickups with monster that you can manually drink causing a set of comedic gulping sounds that gradually raise in pitch until it's finished with a satisfying burp... ...and I wouldn't have it any other way
ah, yes, the two genders: MyHouse.WAD and Treasure Tech (I know it's not the wad you were referencing, but I don't know said mod you were referencing so I went with a really good one with a similar vibe) edt: me big stupid and dind't watch the whole viddy :?
This mod single handedly made me go out and buy House of Leaves because of how much the mod draws from that book and let me tell you, That book is like playing this mod. its absolutely fucking batshit insane but extremely intricate its all deliberately confusing but cohesive
I just don't see the connection to House of Leaves beyond like a super reductionist reading of the basic premise. That is, that there is a house that's bigger on the inside than the outside. Beyond that, I don't really see anything in the video (so far) that references the book
@@cloudshad0ws Well in this video itself, you can see the first time he completes the map when the house disappears and is replaced with a "For Sale" sign, it is up for sale by "Navidson Realty", a direct reference to the name of the owner of the house in House of Leaves. The journal detailing the mod creator's descent into madness, referenced in several times in the video, also directly mirrors many of Johnny's musings while putting together the book in House of Leaves. And while not shown in this particular video, there is also an extremely large (and entirely extraneous) segment that just builds the space from the house basically exactly as described in the book. It's very clear that the creators of the mod took a lot of inspiration for both the mod and the story behind it from House of Leaves, in addition to things like liminal spaces and the backrooms.
@@cloudshad0ws I think what is so similar between this mod and the book is less so the plot, and more the format of the mod. It sounds a bit silly, but house of leaves uses its form as a book to tell and enhance its story, partly using reader's expectations of a book against them to unsettle them. This mod does that with a doom mod. They are both built with a similar nested story, where someone receives an unfinished work from a dead friend/acquaintance and becomes obsessed with it. The work in question deals with a messed up house yeah, but each house is wrong in ways specific to their repsective genres. Something I love about this mod is that the player gets to experience the "navidson record" where the reader only gets to read it. The specifics of how each is messed up are not the same, but a hol house wouldn't work for a doom audience. Navidson might initially realize that his house is larger inside by a few inches than it is outside and a myhouse player might notice the reappearance of windows outside that didnt exist before. When exploring the house, yes, it was unsettling because it was getting bigger, but it was more that the house did not act as a house should. It grew as you would walk hallways, stairways going miles into the earth would appear, vast chambers and hallways that went up both ways. Imo for a video game, unusual architecture isn't all that unnerving. You are supposed to progress and move through levels, so by returning again and again to the same map, it twists that idea of progression into a source of anxiety. There's a lot more that I think really works with the house of leaves analogy(?), like the increasing addition of features and mechanics that are not present in the original games and how that maps onto the usage of text spacing and orientation, colors, etc. but I've been writing for a while and getting increasingly pretentious about it, so I'm going to stop. But I will say, this mod is maybe my favorite thing I've found in a while.
The fun this about this mod is that it still keeps the core DOOM gameplay. Collect keys, kill demons, solve puzzles, navigate mazes. It's all here but twisted on it's head.
@@Minarreal because it isn't just a regular maze where you go from point A to point B, which Regular DOOM does, but instead is a a more abstract take on it.
That door animation straight up made me pause and contemplate reality. The devs of this mod can't possibly be human, they manage to predict every single thought of the human brain and play on it.
I wonder how they did the normal doors. If this is using some GZDoom enhancement ot however it is technically achieved. Also how it pushes the player aside instead of just squishing him or making the door/game break
@@MikuSoda They use teleports / portals, you can notice the door to the basement being inconsistent before the doors change. After they change the door is gone to make it more seamless. Incredibly impressive use of them.
I don’t know why but this wad just… terrifies me. I can’t explain why other than the way the door’s opening change from the DOOM ones to actual doors or how the animations for the guns gain extra frames seamlessly.
It's a mod with the especific intent to make you uncomfortable, not even disturbed, the subtly changing layout of the house, the jarring and sudden shifts in tone even absurdly minute details like the weapon animation changes you said. It does everything in it's power to make sure you never feel safe or at ease, it even goes out of it's way to create scenarios like the completely normal underhalls to lure you into a false sense of security only to pull the rug from you by looping you back in the house as if to imply that even things you thought you knew are now alien and not trustworthy. Also the fact that there's NO jumpscares is amazing because it knows that at some point you expect the big screamer to show up but instead the mod leaves you in paranoia the entire time.
@@patrickloureiro351 Another thing the map does is slightly raise the camera, to fit the scale of the house. It’s almost unnoticeable, especially in My House, but the camera isn’t lowered for Underhalls.
I always love it when I see horror that gives the feeling that something is simply fundamentally wrong and should not exist, sometimes in ways you can’t even really explain in words.
meanwhile missing what.. 50 other things.. > I've listened to this music a thousand times > has mate point out that its changing. he did notice the.. hats/cymbals, but i swear that was after oldmate said something. lets not even talk about the rooms on rooms. god this video really sucked y'all in ay xD
Though in the original engine it’s impossible, its not too uncommon in gzdoom maps. Im not 100% sure how its done here, and frankly i dont understand how most of this map works.
he did notice, straight away. 3:25 he comments what walking down the stairs 'instant door'. Instant door is DOOM modder speak for what most people would call a 'portal'. Its a common trick in doom mods for creating rooms above rooms, and it didnt surprise him at all as he probably has played many mods with this feature.
By the way, there actually WAS a BFG, but in order to get it you need to manipulate the bloody bathroom so that everywhere but the entrance is bloody. That's how you get the BFG
I love how this map feels like a DOOM horror map and not just a horror mod that happens to run on GZDoom. Think about what you do throughout the map; you run around in circles gathering keys (collectibles) to advance thru the level while fighting demons. This is the language of Doom.
Coming from a different vid analyzing this mod, it was cool to see how you instantly picked up on so much of the wrongness it introduced to make it feel off from normal doom.
I did the exact opposite, I found this video first (after also watching Vinny play it) and then watched the analysis and noticed just how right this video was about all the subtle changes and mindfucks, especially as someone who's never ever touched anything related to Doom
Ignore this comment. I'm just putting timestamps so i can go back to watching where i left off or just re-watch a certain part "I'm having a stroke" 3:50 "I saw that!" 12:30 "Pupy" :) 17:20 God damn you're right 19:40 "Jumpscare" 22:30 "I hope it's still beating-" + backrooms 24:05 "I feel distaste for everything" + pool 29:40 Mirror + earape 33:10 "It's fucking shrek" 34:40 Dress Jumpscare + shrek gone missing 35:20 "Wait a minute" 38:25 Fake beach 42:40 "A secret has been found" 47:20 You're damn right again 50:55 LAWNMOWER 52:50 Lawnmowering through the backrooms and hospital 56:15 "Fourth dimensional drifting" + saves names 59:10
what a mindfuck. just the idea of a map that slightly changes every time you do something or when time passes, and it keeps going until it barely resembles the original building is just haunting I guess.
That's what liminal spaces are all about. Doom is a perfect medium for it, because in Doom it's less you being locked in with monsters and more them being locked in with you, so the space itself has to actually be well-crafted to be unsettling. All (most) of the areas share the house's basic layout, warped and twisted in places or added onto with new sections, and the strange, looping space messes with your perception of scale and distance making it feel truly endless. Everything else may be stuck in there with you, but you're still all stuck in there.
I'm so sad that you guys missed out on the Navidson Hallway. If you repeatedly open and close one of the closets in the house it will eventually appear. It's one of the biggest parts of the map, its friggin huge.
As someone who read House of Leaves 100 times, I was actually able to use what I remembered from the book to get to the grand hall and the spiral staircase. It was fucking amazing since I have big time HoL brainrot.
Fun fact, every single place in the mod (minus underhalls) retains the houses layout. The daycare, pool room, airport, etc all have doors and counters where you find them in the home. You never leave the house until the end.
There are a couple exceptions, such as the dark maze and the backrooms area, but for the most part any non-house areas are connected back to a house-layout area, such as the plane or the locker room maze - even the convenience store is half of the house, making the parking lot and road count as a mere extension of the house. It's hilarious to look at the game's map and it's just all the same place, even some like the airport and that part of the brutalist maze having visibly scaled-up but otherwise identical layouts.
The coolest thing is the hidden room where you can unplug a tv. The game shuts off but then when you move everything restarts and all the TV's turn on and just show snow. That and the huge hidden labyrinth that serves no real purpose. And the graveyard with the qr code.
@@PondScummer The out of bounds labyrinths (There are actually 2) are to the backrooms. The other one happens as a 1 in 10 chance when you open a door in the upstairs bedroom. That's a huge maze with only like 3 things of note in it referencing the house of leaves. (From what I understand a lot of what happens in this is from that book, I've never read)
@@xtlm According to another video, House of Leaves inspired a LOT for this mod. Including a house that shifts impossibly, doors that appear where they shouldn't, dark hallways that can't exist, all the mentions of the word "House" are a blue text, even in the title and the Google Document, apparently the family name of the "Sold" sign at the end is also the name of the book characters. The book is written by 2 authors, the first went missing and the other tried to finish it but went insane or something.
@@shibainu2528 There's three "main" stories encapsulated within House of Leaves; the first is the documentary film "The Navidson Record", about Will Navidson, his family, and the house on Ash Tree Lane; the second is the unfinished manuscript of a critique of the film, by a blind man named Zampano; and the third is the edit(torializ)ing of the manuscript, by Johnny Truant.
@Anthony Hernandez ah yes a doom veteran who's seen the animations more than a thousand of thousands of times wouldn't notice and it's all paid actors Edit: Ok so i just had this exact experience My friend, without telling me, was playing "the thing you can't defeat", a doom wad that gets progressively worse because doom guy has dementia I felt unsettled from the start and I fully freaked out completely towards level 3. THREE. i think a person with 100 times my time on doom would notice
A lot of people playing this map won't notice the more minor changes, but seeing someone who has doom 2 ingrained into their mind noticing every slight change is just nice. Map maker had to love videos like this
As someone who spends a lot of time playing and watching, at the time, modern doom wads this was absolutely a blast. The opening act especially I had almost the same reactions to the enemies respawning and doors opening lmao
46:33 I’m just imagining what the monsters see when they notice a wall of rockets in the distance, followed by a clinically insane man yelling the catchphrase of a cereal mascot from the early 2000s.
demon 1 to demon 2: Hey arent we demons? demon 2: yeah? why you asking? Demon 1: If we are demons, then what the hell is that?!" *points in horror at the insane man shooting rockets*
When Vinny Vinesauce played, I was just kinda half-watching. When the door opened on a hinge I literally sat up and just stared. I knew this was something special at that exact moment.
His name is Steve nelson, his username is veddge. He used to be popular in the 90s but went silent until this game dropped. The only explanation he has given so far was that he was finishing his dead friend Tom's map. Technically, since Tom started the map around 1997 as a side project, it is 15 years old. It is quite ominous and a little sad as it is an expression to say goodbye or recieve some sort of closure in his good friends passing.
So fun fact: Apparently, on lower difficulties, this map has one unique enemy type you'd never see otherwise, called Wights (Even on ITYD, there's only 3, and only 1 on HMP), they're just zombies essentially with no real bearing on anything, but still interesting to me Edit: There is a singular Wight that appears on Nightmare
In case you didn't know, the song that plays in the crashed car is a complete mystery. Nobody knows who made it, someone apparently just recorded it off a German radio station. People have been trying to find the original artists for YEARS, to no avail.
Fun fact, the song playing in the crashed car is called "The Most Mysterious Song on the Internet". Apparently some guy in 1980s Germany was recording songs from a radio broadcast onto tapes. This was one of the songs, but either he never caught the name, or it was never said. Since around 2006, a large portion of the Internet has been searching for clues as to who wrote this song.
@@Unhingeddirtdog some people have been saying it might be an unreleased Alphaville recording from the early 80s, but I think the band would've said something about it all these years if it was them.
I love that you mentioned how the song was etched into your brain from playing so much DOOM II before it starts messing with the audio. Between that and instantly catching the smoother animations, you were primed and perfect for this experience. Your attention to DOOM detail is what really makes this whole thing get under your skin. Even beyond the crazy and creepy map design.
There's actually also multiple different endings. A "false" ending with the directors chair, which is also a reference to another dream described in the attached doc. A good ending which is the secret. And a bad ending, where you burn down the house.
There’s a fourth ending. Finding a tombstone with a QR code. When you scan it, it leads to another picture, showing that to the right of the obituary for the Map’s creator is an obituary for the guy who continued developing the Wad in his memory… And that he died *before* the wad was uploaded.
@@nmeister007 and heavily implies this game is essentially a story about two gay lovers who were married. The two obituaries are next to each other; one is assumed to be false, since they died on the same day. However the obvious more rational thought it that the author of this mod didn’t die that day, but his heart might just have
@@sleaf6I also wonder if there’s a trans subtext to it, purely based off the airport bathroom sequence: you enter the women’s bathroom and pick up an empty bottle of pills; when you leave, you pick up a full bottle of pills and the bathroom is now the men’s bathroom.
I'm a little sad y'all didn't realize that every other area was shaped like the house. The liminal concrete place, the bathhouse, the airport, the gas station, etc. All have the same layout as the house, but some with extra parts. It would've been funny seeing y'all react to that. You should go back to this mod and try opening one of the closet doors over and over again. I forgor which one, but it'll turn into an area you haven't seen yet. Also, there was a BFG hidden in that bloody bathroom if you went back after the blood first appeared on the walls.
I’d love to see the doom builder blueprint for this map. They clearly use lots of portals (to seamlessly transition between new areas/different iterations of the house) and to go down into the basement. Because you can’t build floors on top of eachother in doom builder. The same goes for the holes you can fall down, it’s all portals. But what you can do to make a basement, is build a staircase leading down, and put a interactive portal in the middle of where the door would be. So that when the door is opened, it’s a portal to the “basement” which is really an entirely separate portion of the map that isn’t even attached to the rest, and has its own portal in its entrance which is connected to the one in the staircase doorway. But the portals make it look seamless as if the floors are built on top of one another, if that makes any sense. Like in the doom builder engine, (if you don’t know much about mapping, it’s a 2D blueprint that you basically draw your map onto and work from there. It’s not a 3D zone you can look around in) the basement couldn’t be below the ground floor. On the blueprint, the basement would be completely detached from the house.
DavidXNewton has a great 3 part teardown of the backend of the map, would highly recommend giving it a watch here on YT! But you pretty much nailed it, this map is a bunch of silent teleport triggers in doorways and whatnot to create stacked rooms and transitions
4:20 it's really amazing that someone who's played this game so much can get spooked by stuff that others wouldn't even notice, like a door opening properly instead of sliding up into the ceiling
Can we just acknowledge how technically impressive this level is? Tons of hidden teleporters, seamless level transformations, swimming and oxygen mechanics, and even enemies from completely different games in completely different engines (the two-headed dog is a boss in Blood, a game made in the Build Engine)
Not to bash on the mod, but this stuff actually isn't _that_ advanced if you consider it's all things that other mods have been doing for well over a decade now. The swimming/oxygen is just a built-in GZDoom feature that I've seen in more levels than I can count, and Cerberus' behaviour isn't even close to mimicking that of the Blood enemy; it's a completely different enemy with the same sprites (and sounds).
Yeah, these are all things that *have* existed within the space of GZDoom for a *while.* Porting enemies from Build Engine games is pretty common practice, portals and line teleporters have been a thing for a long time. It all lies in the execution. The map deliberately leads you into thinking the author just did some basic-level stuff- the teleports when moving into the basement initially are very obvious- and gradually has everything completely unravel into madness. A lot of it isn't new, but it's used *masterfully* to fuck with the player.
This mod, while created using expanded toolsets that enabled the author to do things that you can't with the vanilla Doom 2 engine, is such a showcase of high skill. Real passion went into creating a high-end ARPG experience, and a real degree of technical prowess with the Doom 2 engine and the creation tools.
It's especially wild because it shows a *lot* of restraint. When you initially go into the house, it's pretending to just be a Boom-compatible map at most; the "compromises" made to make the downstairs work are very obvious and apparent (if you look up in the main house, you'll see the upstairs abruptly get walled off once you get low enough down the stairs), and even once the house changes for the first time, it's still not TOO crazy. The doors are polyobjects now, the two floors are a bit more cleanly integrated now, no big deal. And then everything just gradually unwinds more, and more, and more. Whoever made the map got a *lot* of use out of the line portal special, let me tell you!
i love how he instantly notices the increased FPS on the weapon animations. for most people not that familiar with the game it just throws you off subconciously. but he instantly picked it up!
He didn't. He saw the power pak video before this. It's incredibly painful trying to listen to him pretend this is all pure reactions when it sounds so damn fake and overemphasized the whole time. There's just too much he notices instantly that most DOOM regulars wouldn't even pick up on as fast, John Romero even didn't notice a lot of the crap this guy picks up on somehow instantly.
@AlysZara Some people just react to things in a way that seems overemphasized to you, but normal to them. Also, I'm fairly sure John Romero hasn't played through Doom 2 500,000 times.
I think the song at 38:58 adds so much more to the atmosphere, the song's name is actually unknown and has been being searched for on the internet since 2007. There is no song name or artist known at all. Its referred to as "The most mysterious song on the internet" or "Blind the wind" the song is so good and was made 1985 ish and its only known broadcast (from a radio) was in germany. That song just so happen to get on someones tape, if it didn't then nobody would probably even had known it existed. Knowing how mysterious the song is just adds to the atmosphere of the forest by so much.
If there's one thing that really gets me about this, it's the feeling of powerlessness. There's all these memes about "if doom guy was here" in all sorts of horror games(backrooms), the monsters would be running from him. But in this version, actually being doom guy, you still feel afraid, even when there there aren't actually any monsters outside of the normal doom enemies (and Shrek). You feel like you're going to have to be the one reacting instead of searching and it makes you feel powerless, like you're not the one in control. You're fighting against an invisible enemy the entire time, and this makes you feel unnerved and afraid everywhere you go, even as doom guy with all the weapons. Just goes to show how atmosphere, sound design, and suspense can really make a game. Edit: detail and spelling
Yes, the dread is there, but you CAN still punch/shoot/explode anything that shows up, só its just your kind breaking down from the stress, which gets pushed to the size because you are still punching/shooting/exploding anything that gets in your way.
So this one Doom mod already accomplished more, and had a significantly more effective and compelling story than Hello Neighbor did in it's entire lifespan To clarify: MyHouse does Hello Neighbor better than Hello Neighbor
Theres so many little things in this mod that are really cool, even stuff you didnt find, like the two dogs being lifelinked, or that there are proper levels to the house, like, actually on top of each other. Regular DOOM cant do that. Meanwhile i think youre the first person to point stuff out like the PSX becoming an Xbox EDIT: to clarify, the first person I'VE SEEN point it out. I'm sure there are people before him who have, I just haven't seen their video yet
I think Power Pak did a wonderful rundown of the map and he pointed out the PSX Xbox thing. It's the video that made me play this map, and I'm glad I did. I had it spoiled, and even playing it myself I was amazed at all the cool trickery and stuff. Still took me over an hour to experience all I'm aware of in this map.
I've watched several of these now, they all somehow see the psx to xbox thing lol. The secret of the map is that he drew the house about 16 times and had many portals between the slightly different versions.
He's absolutely not the first to point out the PS, basically every single video mentions it. He IS possibly the fastest person to notice the music switching up and the smooth gun animations though.
I like how he was on the right track with the mirror the first time, he was just there to early! I'm also impressed he did all of this without finding the BFG after coming so close to finding it in the half bloody bathroom.
It amazes me how smooth and seamless this mod is. Sometimes you barely even notice things happening and it just adds to the overall uncannines. I love this mod, it's a work of art and I cannot even imagine how much time and effort it must've taken to make.
I know NOTHING about Doom but I watched an analysis on this mod and watching people freak out over the frame rate of the guns and the added drums to the soundtrack makes me so happy for some reason.
for those who don't know, this mod is a reference to "House of leaves" its a book about a house that changes itself on the inside. I highly recommend you checking it out if you like stuff like that. (I in no way say that this mod IS the house of leaves, it just references it. Also, there is another video that explains its ties to the house of leaves. Hearing the music change really fucked with me on my playthrough. And I IMMEDIATELY noticed the smooth doom animations. This was an absolute gem of a wad, an instant masterpiece imo.
It sounds like an imitation of particularly chaotic thrash metal. Its not unlistenable by any means.

3: in multiple rooms in the concrete area, the rooms are lit up. In one is nothing. The second one holds a mega sphere. Fast and easy 200% health and armor.

Also the fact that there's NO jumpscares is amazing because it knows that at some point you expect the big screamer to show up but instead the mod leaves you in paranoia the entire time.

it reminds me of undertale in a way
@@hiitssam5075 I can understand that, since both games mindfuck with you in some capacity.
It's a map that gaslights everyone lmao.
I'm so sad that you guys missed out on the Navidson Hallway. If you repeatedly open and close one of the closets in the house it will eventually appear. It's one of the biggest parts of the map, its friggin huge.
That fucked me up the most. The complete and utter silence as you traverse that dark hallway was the most unnerving thing to me in the entire mod.

@@XBFNoodles Not utter silence. You'll hear things. Growls, bumps...like something is close but you never encounter it.

This mod creator just casually dropped an existential Doom horror mod and then refused to elaborate.
@@JoeFromThatPlace Which makes this mod even better since one of the obituaries is of one Steve Nelson who died on the same day as the "friend" Tom

So fun fact: Apparently, on lower difficulties, this map has one unique enemy type you'd never see otherwise, called Wights (Even on ITYD, there's only 3, and only 1 on HMP), they're just zombies essentially with no real bearing on anything, but still interesting to me

It's made for a sourceport, so it's perfectly likely it has actual multiple floors support.
@@smergthedargon8974 gzdoom does not support multi-floor

Funni timestamp
Almost everyone else: *experiences a slow burn of dread taking ahold of themselfs*
This guy in the first five minutes: AAAAAAAAHHHHHH!
Technically it doesn't do anything new, it's just put together really well.
@@Razumen I think that's the main thing, it uses these things to it's advantage and shows everything you can do.
@@QuillandInk They're only new if you've never touched a custom doom map in like...decades.
I like how they completely ignore the blood splotches in both the daycare and gas station until there’s a bit more than a splotch or two
I think the song at 38:58 adds so much more to the atmosphere, the song's name is actually unknown and has been being searched for on the internet since 2007.
