The sub's camera is one of the most brilliant and effective horror mechanics I’ve ever seen. You don’t just get to see what's in front of you. No, you have to consciously _choose_ to see it. You have to turn your back to the only light source in that deathtrap and walk over there. You have to sit in near-total darkness with nothing but your own imagination and wait.
The photos are like mini jump scares too. The suspense of whether or not you’ll see something totally abnormal and freaky is what keeps you on your toes each time you take a photo.
@@P13Rat plus, the camera is a flash, that's what's causing the light. So you're basically telling the entities on the ocean floor "Ayo sup, alien pricks."
Without spoiling too much... The part where you are at a set of coords and the radar is telling you there's a wall when the map shows thats impossible is just fucking brilliant
19:44 What I like so much about this part, is that if you start thinking about it, the ocean of blood probably has no sources of light whatsoever except for your camera's blitz. So really, what you just did in that moment is flash light into the eyes of an animal that is probably hyper sensitive to light and piss it off very much
@@doplop abisal animals still have eyes, they’re simply adapted to the darkness below. As the commenter above said, some animals have incredibly sensitive eyes to see the little light there is in total darkness. They sometimes are also bioluminescent or simply travel between different depths, some with more light than others. While there are a lot of blind fish that move with other senses, eyes are still very useful for many species.
@@doplop this is a good point. If it’s complete darkness, they should just go the Texas Blind Salamander route and lose their eyes. Then again, who knows what would happen in evolution when you’re surrounded in other peoples DNA.
The scariest part of the deep ocean is that it’s almost the only place where you can feel completely surrounded and terrifyingly exposed at the same time
My dad worked on a submarine for a bit in Jamaica. Still absolutely wild to me considering he's been doing HR for the entirety of my life, nothing even close to related to submarines or the ocean.
@ensignmarker 312 Budget Cuts is an amazingly done VR title with quite low-poly graphics for the environment. Bottom line is, if you can make a player feel like they are there, you dont need photorealism or high poly counts. Maybe a slight increase in graphics would be necessary, but not a large one.
The fire starting in the cabin is my favorite scare in this game. It's not given any sort of alarm like the other hazards or your oxygen depleting, it relies entirely on you realizing that there is an unfamiliar sound behind you, and that it's something gone terribly wrong. Then it never happens again, but for the rest of your time with the game you'll be looking over your shoulder out of paranoia to see if another fire started without you noticing.
My biggest scare is the *spoiler* blood flood and the shaking panel when you reached the end of a narrow cave. Also my first game over and the ending gave me a mini heart attack.
I may sound like I'm mad, but does anyone know the source of the song that he plays at 4:01? I know I've heard it somewhere before and it's driving me insane.
It's the good kind of scare that doesn't make you jump just from being loud. First being unnerved by the unknown and noises from the outside, curiosity from wanting to know what's out there and the tension from waiting for the photo to develop only to be hit with the realization that something is following you.
@@nagabe6394 same, i took a pic and ran back to the panel towards the very end, only to be confronted with a picture of demonic mike wezowski, and in a feeling of panic i immediately turned my sub around and headed in the opposite direct lmao
SPOILERS: The eye looking into the camera scared me so hard. I didn't think use the camera at first so I check my location 4 times to confirm I wasn't right in front of a wall before I remembered that I could just use the camera. Most terrifying thing ever
I can imagine you perfectly calm, maybe annoyed going "Why's the damn radar going off? I should be nowhere near a wall." for a few minutes. As outside a monster just stares you down unknown to you.
i had a little different approach when I played it, i were certain for a fact that i weren't being pulled, i were thrown there to die, why would they pull me back, how would they pull me back, plus there are hints I'm not the first guy to dive in one of these seas,
@@thecoffindancegang4170 There's zero real theories about anything that could cause all life in even the observable universe (yet alone the entire universe) to completely die off in a relatively short time without very obvious warning signs beforehand such as years to centuries of massive overconsumption by sentient civilizations or physical destabilization of time and space on a cosmic scale. The scenario of every existence gradually winking out for no apparent reason is exclusively in the SCP community and depressed minds.

"Hope is as illusory as starlight" You know what's awesomely terrifying about that line? In a universe where stars literally disappeared, you'd still see the stars in the sky, because how long it takes for light to travel the vastness of space. The light of stars that no longer exist. If Sun disappeared, we wouldn't know it for 8 minutes.
Even worse if it exploded. We'd only know about 10-15 minutes after it exploded for the explosion to reach us. Just imagine the dread that would happen to the world if we were somehow aware of this...
That's not even far away from real life and not just the in-game's universe. Some stars we see in the sky could be or not be still there. Their light takes millions of years to reach us. We are seeing how they looked a long time ago. Even if they are not gone, that fact is terrifying.

This would make a legendary arcade machine. Imagine it, you go inside of it and play the game normally but in the physical space of the sub as a machine with buttons and immersive sound/rocking.
I hate jumpscares, I think they're a cheap and unearned way to mass produce scary moments in something, but MAN the jumpscare at the end of this game is absolutely amazing
This is the jumpscare the entire game is building up for, that's what makes it amazing, cause you don't see it coming I love these type of atmospheric horror games like Dark Wood Nowadays, most horror games just abuse jumpscares
yeah, its a quality jumpscare: - not attepmting to burst eardrums - building up tension with strange and scary - uniqly utilizing "gameplay" part of it: as your sub is filling with blood and low on oxygen you push through it, concentrating on "working" and creating yourself some sense of "things are under control" as opposed to game/movie presenting you a calm and relaxed scene to do a jumpscare.
because this one is /the/ scare of the game, but its not THE scare-Y of the game. its not the SOLE source of horror. just the premise is enough to make you want to crawl out of your skin just to escape the horror
This game is a fucking masterpiece of suspense. The fact that to even see, you have to run to the camera and wait for a photo. While the photo prints, you get a horrible sense of dread. It's amazing.
I remember at the 19:44 jumpscare I stood in silent shock for a few seconds. At that point I hadn’t been properly scared but this properly took me by surprise. I’m amazed with how this game doesn’t really have jump scares per se, but rather has moments where a cold dread washes over you as you realise something, that speak for themselves.
I feel like what makes it work so well is that it isn't sudden. You get a chance to brace yourself for what that photo means. Because whatever happens is not going to be good.
Iron Lung is genius. The fact that you can't see out the front window makes the game 100x scarier. The delay in of the picture taking, the awful noises of creatures lurking around and the sounds of your own submarine all try as hard as possible to scare the living moonlights out of you
It allows for your mind to fill in the answers for you in anticipation for the real answer... Only for your mind to once again have free reign with a vague answer
This is “slow dread” horror. Most horror games have jump scares and you have to rush to get something done. In this game you really just have a mission that seems to drag on with nothing exciting, but it still freaks the crap out of you
I wish we have a generalized term for horror games that rely on cheap jump scares because "horror game" is too broad. Thrill horror perhaps? As opposed to horror like this being psychological horror.
If you like video games like this, I'd highly suggest you watch "Prince of Darkness", by John Carpetner. The movie is a bit slow, but it's truly a dreadful environment with great horror elements that make it really unsettling.
The images do it for me, the mysterious buildings and mysteries that will never be solved, simply because there is no answer. It's great and thought provoking
i hate it at the same time, i want answers, i need answers, and i very much would like a continuation with another sub with a bit more gear for proper exploration. i want to find out what went on here, are they building or just the bran trying to find recognizeable patterns in the pictures, and if they are building, then how long have they been submerged? who build them and when? and so on. and i am going to be thinking about it for some time, then some years in the future i will remember this and think about it again and be irritated that theres no answer.
@@inquisitorwalmarius6650 good horror doesn't usually answer most questions, part of why it's scary is because it's unknown. Having every answer easily given to the player in a sequel would just ruin the fun, and also, when you build up a mystery like this, no answer will be good enough after a while.
@@Gustavozxd13 you could always get answers that begets new questions but I see your points the same reason I dont play horror games in general. I want the whole picture when I'm done with the game. I love exploration games but most of the times exploration and seeking answers are second fiddle to action and shooting which puts me off in most settings as I'm no fps player. Same reason I'm not spiritually or religiously inclined, I want and crave answers they cant give.
Yeah, for once it is a part of the ambience to not know. You're just the poor guy in the sub. Nobody tells you anything. You're never going to get out...
The big jumpscare is set as the final peak, not as some cheap spook across the game. That is why it works so well. It's not just a monster popping out of a vent, it is the end to the entire thing.
Man you guys' comments made me overhype the whole thing ha ha. Though tbh I think even if I didn't expect it it wouldn't have made a big impression on me. No this is not an "internet tough guy" act but more so that there are worse things out there.
Iron Lung gives me the sense that something out there in or beyond the wider universe of the game hates humanity. While you're down there, you have this entity's full and individual attention.
I think it’s more of lovecrafts azathoth where it’s slowly destroying the universe and humans are the only ones to document it, the whole time the humans think “why does it hate us?”but by the end of it all it turns out that it doesn’t hate us, it doesn’t hate anything it just does what it needs to do and is indifferent to as as we are to ants. And then when we finally realize we are truly alone we blink out of existence
Ahhh yes, the "Truly visceral feeling of being in a tight space, but also submersed in strange liquid, not being able to see anything clearly, being hunted by an unknown, otherworldly entity, being among the last survivors of your species lost in space with no recourse or way to rectify it *_AND_* being threatening to be set on fire every other minute" simulator. My favorite genre.
@@triliner254 yeah fr.. I played it when PS Now still existed and didn't get too far cause of the claustrophobic feeling + other games but I tried it a lot and liked what I saw for the little bit that I played.
@triliner254 that's the great thing about underwater horror, we have no idea what's down in our own oceans, so we can take some liberties with atmosphere and those creatures. And when you take this concept onto a different planet, your imagination goes wild trying to figure out if there's something out there in the dark watching you, waiting for the perfect moment to strike
That's a point, if all the stars disappeared, it would be aeons before you'd even know it wasn't just a local event. Hell it would be eight minutes before we even noticed the sun was gone. The creepiest thing would be watching stars at a similar distance blinking out, as if a Christmas tree started loosing it's bulbs one by one

@@mr_jimmmmmmm Thats false. For sure it is not half, seems like an random percentage. Also thousands of years is nothing compared to the life time of an average sized star.
your comment alone made me anxious lmao this game feels very lovecraft inspired due to how its about something terrifying that we dont quite understand
if you didn’t know iron lung also stands for people in mechanical breathing chambers who have polio. these machines are big and makes the person immobile, and since polio isnt curable, slowly, slowly the person’s body disintegrates
This game perfectly captures the feeling dread and hopelessness being stuck inside an old rusty sub beneath the pitch black depths of the red ocean in an alien planet.
Because unlike Iron Lung, which is a comparatively simple, low budget, far less popular game, Minecraft and others have very dedicated and loving fanbases that would pay attention to every detail in a movie about their favorite game, everybody would lose their minds if someone messed up a Minecraft movie, the risk is just way too big
I mean how do you even adapt Minecraft into a narrative and have it not feel forced? Given the entire point is just 'use your imagination with the games tools and mechanics'. Not to say that's bad design, it gives the game a lot of appeal, but it wouldn't really work in movie form. This has a narrative to go off of so there's at least something to work with there.
Some of the images are grainy enough to where you start to see little ghostly faces, and I think that's so clever. They are trying to simulate madness, you are alone. Your brain will see things that are not there so it can recover from asocial experiences. But it just makes it worse.
And that is why all pictures of bigfoot and ufos are so low quality. Your own mind fills in the blanks. We humans are very good at finding patterns, even when there are none. That is why we see Jesus on a slice of toast. Or monsters in grainy and unclear pictures. Or animals in clouds. Or images in randomly placed stars.
I live near a prehistoric cave system which is open to the public. It's nice to visit and see how ancient people had to live in the dark or near dark, with only animal fat torches. They turn the lights off for a minute or two to emphasise it.
The fact that we don't even know what made them is really terrifying. Was there some... ancient alien species of eldritch fish beings? We may never know...
I feel like everybody's forgetting the most important question: how is there a fish monster thing in an ocean of blood? How is it even alive? Is it even a organic organism? Or is it mechanical?
Why couldn't there be an alien living creature living in the blood? There is not living beings in our organisms? The right question is "Is the planet alive?"
true, the glorious world of 3D leaves too many details to be spotted, and we're only focusing on the mission, as the brain does not need to fulfill any kind of environment immersion because we're seeing it on the daily basis. I happen to listen to one of these immersion during animation lesson, that the mind simply fill the gap of a missing spot in the 24fps animation and makes it even more lifelier, because the brain, simulated it.
So true. FNAF 1 and maybe 2 were great because the lack of detailed answers let your mind run wild. The story is still interesting but not nearly as scary to me any more. The simplicity of this game is great.
This game would be perfect for VR. Think about it: Small play space? Yes Simple game mechanics? Yes Old graphics? Yes Atmosphere that makes you sh!t your pant? Yes
@@several. You'd think that sitting down for an hour slowly pressing 5 buttons would get a little boring/tedious, too, but it doesn't. The atmosphere keeps you on edge, so it's never tedious or boring. Idk I get what you're saying but there could be an optional sitting down mode using the joycon for navigation
@@blepz8606 It was just my opinion based on my experience of being a VR user for around 4 years. Standing around with realistically little mental or physical stimulation is tiresome, like standing at the bank or something. And sitting VR is a popular thing, but a lot of people (myself included) tend to rather a more involved and action based experience. It could go either way, but I think if they made a few changes to optimize it for VR they could do really well.
Is it still Thalassophobia if you can't see the deep water you're surrounded by? Next video will be something not horror, whatever it turns out to be. The fish at 15:00 was the same fish that broke through his sub at the end. Which leads me to think it saw you, it saw the flash of camera and knew that you saw it. Once you started moving again it then went to hunt you down
Just imagine if you were cruising around, and heard a massive roar, or rocks smashing even though you arent near any terrain. Your pants are gonna get a lot heavier.
16:38 Yes, that is one of the coolest moments! The hull being struck masks the fact that you're basically being teleported further ahead. I genuinely needed a minute or two to re-orient myself when I played. When it happens again later it actually makes your life easier by skipping a tight turn through a narrow corridor.
20:22 I like to imagine as you're attempting to turn the submarine to the perfect coordinate, the fish demon outside is just sitting there wondering why this metal tube keeps moving little by little and just wanted to check in to make sure you're ok.

You know one of the things that creeped me out the most? Watching the x/y numbers get bigger, knowing that there was probably a terrifying end the higher those numbers got.
Man, that last scare got me so good. Going through the final tunnel, realising that the blood wasn't just rising, but rising _fast_ , going as fast as I possibly could in a clunky, slow, metal death box, trying not to hit walls, praying to god that I could still _see_ the console to change my angle when I got to the destination. When I finally got all the co-ordinates in, I actually paused before turning around, because I was so very certain that _someone_ or _something_ was going to be in the camera room. I turned with gritted teeth. I had a small sense of relief. Took one step forward. And exploded into screaming and stressed laughter when the jump came. Fantastic experience
For me I was trying to do it as quick as possible for all the reasons you stated above so as soon as I reached my spot and i got my angle, I turned around and went forward immediately and lost my shit. That screaming and stressed laughter is pretty accurate to my reaction too. This is probably one of the only horror games that’s legitimately scared me on a psychological level. You really do feel the dread and hopelessness of this man with this pointless death mission, but you keep going because it’s all you have left. God this was a good ass game
@@meneither3834 In my opinion, it did not feel cheap, neither did it feel like a copout. To me, it felt like an appropriate ending, that makes sense in this context.
Fun fact: You could actually see out the porthole if it wasn't covered, the entire map isn't just rendered by the pictures, but is actually right in front of you, with a little modding you can remove the porthole and move through the map with a realtime view of what's ahead of you, it ruins the experience for a first time play through, but it's great for exploring the map for secrets and to analyze things
That’s not entirely true. The sub you play in is actually separated from the map and is completely stationary. What you’re actually moving around is a free floating camera
Another fun fact! The oxygen bar depleting and the sub breaking down are entirley scripted and aren't tied to any kind of time limit so you have as much time as you need to complete the game while still getting the scares and suprises.
After this whole Oceangate fiasco. It really shows the true horror of underwater exploration. THE PRESSURE! The constant threat of a catastrophic implosion because of the unpredictable nature of deep waters is a lot more terrifying then anything in this game.
I'm fairly certain this would classify as Lovecraftian Horror. Consider: an alien world, deep beneath the surface of a liquid - blood or water, it's the depth that matters. Unnatural structures, seeming to be wrapped beneath the churning weight of billions of gallons of blood. Something fishlike, smart enough to recognize a metal contraption as prey, swimming about, stalking you. And a dying universe, filled with people lost to their own existentialism, fleetingly clinging to hope with the fervor of a madman.
Only thing missing for it to be Lovecratian is actual creatures in sight, maddening you with horrors untold and unthinkable of their existence. Edit: Okay I finished the video and the photos are better than what I imagined. This went from "ok, claustrophobic" to "fuck"
The part about having to take pictures rather than getting a camera feed really improves the horror aspect of it. You have to click the button and Wait for the photo to show up, really improving that anticipation of seeing something absolutely terrifying. Similar to when you expect a jumpscare or when you think something really really bad is going to happen. It really forces you to hang on to that edge for so long, really pulls that adrenaline out like a slow trickle of water coming into the submarine, just waiting for something to fill you with terror.
Plus you as a player take the picture. You decide if you want to see it. Not just something that is happening around you, but personally involving the player.
Moreover, when it comes to the creatures lurking out there, it’s a photo of not something in front of you. It’s a photo of something that WAS in front of you a few seconds ago. Is that damn thing still there? Or did it go somewhere else? You don’t know. The only live feed you are getting is from the proximity sensors. The rest comes with a dreadfully long lag.
From a coding perspective, this would be really interesting to actually move around in, because it seems like it's an actual physical environment and not just semi random pictures. Get noclip and gamma up and explore. Edit, Good video on it: ruclips.net/video/ok-aA20WG6A/видео.html Can't believe how many people thought the Dev would go through so much tedious bs just to save a minimal amount of resources Lmao
Have the player sit still in his submarine, somewhere. Have a separate camera that moves along with your inputs (for taking pictures). Script some encounters along the way too.
There's literally nothing outside of the sub. All possible pictures are already rendered and whichever one matches your "coordinates" when the button is pressed is sent to the screen. Still cool and unique but there is no environment. Kinda the whole point for such a small scale and low budget approach.
This really reminds me of that psychological horror game where you are in a cell (that turns out to be an elevator) and you are some uninfected prisoner in a world wide plague that causes total organ failure and you can only receive letters, and play some DS games. It had me questioning my humanity at the end tbh. Edit: if anyone remembers it's name please comment it, also to it's prequel if you know

"Two possibilities exist: either we are alone in the Universe or we are not. Both are equally terrifying." -Arthur C. Clarke This game feels like it was inspired by this quote. An empty dying Universe, a seemingly empty ocean of blood... And then you start hearing the alien "sea" life and realise you aren't alone, but your terror refuses to falter...
@@lewispooper3138 You either die believing there is nothing more to the vastness of the universe and we are truly alone - or live long enough to find out there ARE, in fact, others out there. And they want us dead.
I think I got it, that anomaly was a human made star, they were probably trying to recreate the dying stars before being turned into a ocean by their own creation, that's why they were so desperate to get someone down there
If that were the case, then all the other objectives wouldn't make sense, at least as I understand it. If there was such hope riding on this theory of discovering a man-made star, that would likely be the only objective, in which they would pull you out after taking that single photograph before chucking you right back in, because you aren't exactly meant to make it back; you are a guinea pig. Alternatively, it could be a jet-stream, if I have the term correctly. Seeing as the camera only provides black and white static photographs, it would be reasonable to say that this is liquid, most likely blood, flowing through this fissure at a high speed, thus causing the distortion of the photograph. The sound seems to imply this, and the sudden expulsion of the vessel from it's proximity could add to this theory, albeit loosely. To anyone now going through this comment section, I encourage you to continue on. People introduced some pretty cool ideas that you might be interested in reading. And if you haven't had the game spoiled yet, BUY THE GAME FIRST!
@@closet7401 Yeah, I can't adequately explain that. One could say it's the result of force being placed upon the vessel that's leading to an illusion of distortion/movement through vibration/thrust or by an increase in cabin pressure which is causing hallucinations. It would still be reasonable to say it has some form of temporal effect and that the object is anomalous in nature, seeing as it's on a moon with a blood ocean. I'm no physicist though, let alone MD, so I could be wrong.
@@transrights9188 I feel like the man made star was made by a certain group of people who got wiped out, and then the others didnt know about it. The game tells you that humans are spread out among the universe and disconnected, so I assume there was no communication when that was made, that plus the time distortion that comes with space traveling, and I feel like this theory could have some merit to it. It would explain how they didnt just send you to take a picture of that one thing and come back if they didnt know about it.
The thing I find absolutely genius is how often you come across images that somewhat resemble a face, enough for your brain to recognise it, yet at the same time they're distorted just enough to be unsettlingly inhuman. Like take 15:10 for example, when you notice not only the fish, but a small thing between the two bone-like structures. It appears to have two little holes that appear to be eyes and some kind of toothy mouth, but at the same time it could just be a random piece of floating debris. As a small bonus, I noticed that none of the other particles or debris seemed to shift in the second photo he took, yet the face thing actually seemed to disappear as well as the fish, which is really subtle since in that moment most of your attention would have been diverted to the fish disappearing.
This is a really good example of that type of horror that's even more terrifying because you CAN'T see anything. All you have is the noises around you to get your imagination and the fear of the unknown going. Also I'd be really interested to see the map with noclip/freecam.
Alien isolation was really hard for me ; you hear the xenomorph, you hear hus steps, the rustles when he is crawling in the vents, but you don't see him. That's true horrors : you know there is something or a predator chasing you down but you can't see him until he attack.
The sudden position change was so clever, terrifying and unnerving all at the same time. It's something that doesn't sound like it would be creepy but it just hits right at the moment you start to feel comfortable that it's completely sickening. Amazing ❤
I swear, this guy's commentary actually sounds like he's reading off an invisible monologue from the main character of the game. I experienced this effect when I did;t watch the video and just listen to it. It just shows how much emotion he has put toward his gameplay and his commentary.
The building looks kind of like how Lovecraft described the Temple’s eponymous structure, which is discovered by a wreck German U-boat. And lures the crewmen to it one by one.
Aw man near the end i had a cool idea i was starting to suspect that you were not actually in a ocean of blood anymore but you had been swallowed and were inside of a massive creature and the bones you were finding were in its stomach hence the sounds being made as you moved your sub. I think that idea is really scary.
What if that monster is the reason for the quiet rapture? Like it just ate everything or something. Because every star just couldn't disappear all at once, because of the time it takes light to reach us. Even if the sun disappeared suddenly the light remnants would remain for a long while, so it would make sense if it was, well, EATEN instead of vanishing. The lore is so intriguing, I wish we had more of it. Creepy, but definitely cool idea!
@@debtherooster from what I can tell, the game mentions "the ghost-light of dead stars" or something like that, so the light hasn't vanished, just the stars.
@@_herb I think the ghost light may just be the light that's still left after the stars disapeared, since light travels at a finite speed, once the stars disappear, you'll still be seeing light for a bit. You'll still get light for quite some time from former stars that are light-years away (exactly as many years as the amount of light-years between you and the star). I think that light from stars that have already vanished is what the game calls ghost-light.
The blip beeping at you at varying speeds depending on how close you are to something is a great mechanic for building tension and suspense. It reminds me a bit of those TCAS alerts, with the robotic voices going "climb, climb now" or "traffic, traffic". Voice commands like that, especially robotic/synthesized ones, would pair fantastic with a mechanic like this in a similar horror game.
Imagine how much of a crime you committed to have been essentially given a dragged out summary execution when there are literally a handful of ppl left in a dying universe, or they’re just immense assholes
@@halostormx7827 nah, one dead convict means one less mouth to feed. the story stated that all planetary bodies disappeared, along with all lifeforms on them
The talk about how the game makes you actively go forward and do all the tasks to maintain the submarine reminds me heavily of "No One Lives Under the Lighthouse," which is another spectacular horror game that I've played before. I'll definitely have to check out Iron Lung.
Not a film, but I’ve actually been thinking about adapting the setting for the Ten Candles system and running it for a few friends this Halloween. Not quite sure how I’d preserve that oh-so-important lonely atmosphere with multiple players though. Any ideas?
The photo you got of the fish was so cool! I didn't get anything like that to happen in my playthrough. The funny thing with the eye picture: nothing happens to you before you take it. I reversed a good distance (it chases after you) before taking the picture, but it never actually hits the sub. You'll probably blow up the submarine if you try to go eastward, but otherwise I think it's just a curious creature you're forced to stun with a blinding camera flash in order to proceed. Also, at the ending, I was almost expecting your last picture to be of a wreck of other submarines, like that others were there before you and there was no hope all along. I just got the feeling of crestfallen acceptance as the blood/water started flooding in. The craft wasn't built to resurface. But then I got jumpscared. Not quite as poetic as in my mind, but also not unexpected either, ironically.
@@weavilelover i guess it is a matter of what you find more scary. Personally, i think that a mountain of bones in a city would answer questions that shouldn't be answered. As it is, we don't know the answers to questions that are not frustrating, but intriguing, like: who built the artificial stuff you found? What's the anomaly? Was that the huge eye of a curious beast or something more intelligent, like some eldritch creature? What made you jump across the map? These are good questions that you can think your own answers and maybe find more stuff in the future. Instead, if you were to find a crap ton of humans remains, then your questions would just get more specific and frustrating to answers, like: why there were humans here? What was the connection between the humans and the anomaly? Why the humans went down here etc etc. This is my personal take, at least.
People have discovered that you can head straight to where the last location is and take a photo, and since the other ones haven't been done it doesn't trigger the end sequence. The final photo objective is the same building as the one in the bottom right; but also has some of those chain/tube thingies that the second photo has.
I backed away from it for a solid minute.. then I advanced on it. I figured the game somehow broke, didn't think to check the camera, and unfortunately looked it up
That gore style, the PS2 graphics, the strange and quiet ambience, this man is a genius, even if i don't like so much those gory games, i actually felt alive while seeing the dusk preview again.
I’d actually like to see a sequel where you CAN control the depth. Maybe the story could be continued and technology would be improved to the point where humanity is slowly catching up to where it was before everything disappeared. The location could be set on the same moon, or a different one, but your submarine would be kitted with a bit more high-tech machinery. Maybe you’d still be sealed off, it would still be restricted, but you’d have a better GPS and a full scale 3D map you’d need to learn to traverse. There’d be no way to fight whatever’s out there, but instead you’d have to evade approaching creatures that would occasionally appear nearby randomly. Finally, instead of taking pictures you’d record short clips of what’s out there, just to make the technology fit. You’d still be alone, that’s crucial.
This game definitely understands horror tropes, which is surprising since his other works of ART aren't really 'horror' games. This one is great though, very short but definitely worth it for the thrill.
14:58 The moment you see this creature is when strange things start occurring. This predator starts chasing the submarine and starts beating it around. 20:28 Here, in the finale, you can clearly see a green monster with three eyes and a giant mouth. Resembling a lot the monster seen in the photo before. 18:57 These sources of light might be some still functioning portals made by a long extinct alien race, this explains what those strange sunken buildings are, and those strange jumps the submarine take along the map... OR those jumps are the effects of the giant creature dragging the submarine around with its mouth, damaging the structure and finally breaking it, and those lights are just some unexplainable alien anomalies.
The soundtrack seems to make use of the "paulstretch" method of slowing audio without distorting it. It's really easy to use it to create super atmospheric sounds that sound otherworldly, and once you recognise the kind of sound, you'll notice it everywhere, from indie games to games like bloodborne
I love how at 9:25 the closest you can get to looking behind you is spinning this metal death trap and taking a picture, which is more than enough time for any sea creatures to scurry away.
so cool how the music almost sounds like it’s coming from the creaking and groaning of the old sub moving through depths it wasn’t designed to withstand, just adding to that uneasy feel
One minor correction from your own narration is that it is specifically "Habitable" planets that are dissapearing and implied that just anything that is not a dead or inhospitable rock is included in that. This is why the blood sea is such a priority since it is somehow filled with blood, a very biological thing which shouldn't be possible in conjunction with the above circumstances.

I wish we have a generalized term for horror games that rely on cheap jump scares because "horror game" is too broad. Thrill horror perhaps? As opposed to horror like this being psychological horror.

It could go either way, but I think if they made a few changes to optimize it for VR they could do really well.

Lol, same here. I just wanted to snap that picture and get it over with then the freaking monster crashes through and scares the shit out of me.

@@Link9058 what a clever little trick.
Ah yes, I love spreading misinformation on the internet
“Something Fishlike” yep, that’s Lovecraft alright!
it is by definition a cosmic horror quite literally so
Only thing missing for it to be Lovecratian is actual creatures in sight, maddening you with horrors untold and unthinkable of their existence.
Edit: Okay I finished the video and the photos are better than what I imagined. This went from "ok, claustrophobic" to "fuck"
Also fear of the unknown is a staple for lovecraft
@@YourInASoulTrap Cosmic horror is intrinsically tied to Lovecraft, as by most accounts he invented it.
Great analogy
From a coding perspective, this would be really interesting to actually move around in, because it seems like it's an actual physical environment and not just semi random pictures. Get noclip and gamma up and explore.
Edit, Good video on it: ruclips.net/video/ok-aA20WG6A/видео.html
Can't believe how many people thought the Dev would go through so much tedious bs just to save a minimal amount of resources Lmao
Have the player sit still in his submarine, somewhere. Have a separate camera that moves along with your inputs (for taking pictures). Script some encounters along the way too.
Yeah there will be a separate environment you can no clip into. I'd love to see someone do it.
Boundary break, I'm interested. Give me an update if someone actually doing it.
There's literally nothing outside of the sub. All possible pictures are already rendered and whichever one matches your "coordinates" when the button is pressed is sent to the screen. Still cool and unique but there is no environment. Kinda the whole point for such a small scale and low budget approach.
lmk if someone does this

Nice theory. But the surroundings inside the sub were distorting as well, implying some sort of space time weirdness
@@closet7401 commenting because I have nothing to provide that can help
This game popped up in my mind when they talked about ocean gate

Dude, we watched this video yesterday, THE DAY RIGHT BEFORE the Titanic situation. Bringin an extra dimension to the horror there.

14:58 The moment you see this creature is when strange things start occurring. This predator starts chasing the submarine and starts beating it around.
20:28 Here, in the finale, you can clearly see a green monster with three eyes and a giant mouth. Resembling a lot the monster seen in the photo before.
