  • Fear and Hunger is a very challenging game that a lot of people will bounce off of, either due to its difficulty or subject matter. I think that's a mistake. Here, I'll do my best to present one possible interpretation of the game's events, attempting to line it up with the canon established by its sequel.
    Fear & Hunger is a horror dungeon crawler set in the dark and hopeless dungeons of fear and hunger. The game is a hybrid of survival horror and dungeon crawler genres with its influences ranging from Silent Hill to Nethack. There are roguelike elements to the game as well as a heavy foundation of a j-RPG.

    Fear and Hunger is about living in a world where good outcomes just don't happen very often, if at all. Yes, you can absolutely win the coin toss and not get killed this time around, but that coin is going to keep flipping. Sooner or later, you make the wrong call. Good planning and preparation, solid strategy and manipulation, all of that can be undone just because of a single flip of the coin, and then everything quickly falls apart. This applies not just to the gameplay, but to the world of F&H in general.

    • @KingYahshua
      @KingYahshua Год назад +100

      The coin toss mechanic reminds me so much of Anton Chigurh's coin tossing in No Country for Old Men. You can keep assigning the responsibility of fate to this coin as much as you want. Ultimately however, either flipping heads or tails is inevitable, thus everything is arbitrary and bleak. Strangely, F&H's world is pretty depressing and treacherous like No County for Old Men's world.

    • @FirstLast-cg2nk
      @FirstLast-cg2nk Год назад +251

      @@KingYahshua Maybe, but in F&H, the winning move is refusing to let the coin flip. In nearly every instance, the coin toss can be avoided if your guard on the correct turns, and the pattern is predictable for every boss. When a player is ignorant, the world seems random and unfair. Once enlightened, the player understands that almost nothing is out of their control, and you only have yourself to blame for your mistakes.
      In NCfOM, the "hero" could have absolutely left the money where it was, called the cops and let them know what happened, and gone on to live a long, happy life. Instead, he took the money, and from the moment he did so, the coin was flipped, metaphorically speaking, although it wouldn't land until his untimely death. He took a risk, believing he could beat the odds, when the smarter play was just to avoid the coin toss from the start.
      In F&H, we see this play out with Le'garde's tale. He leads a band of mercenaries to slaughter a tribe of people for the Cube of the Depths, then leads a coup he knows will fail so he'll get thrown into the Dungeon of Fear and Hunger, where he's banking on D'arce rescuing him. However, Le'garde had unknowingly flipped a coin when he killed Ragnavaldr's tribe, leading to a fifty-fifty chance of him surviving. Canonically, Ragnavaldr wins that coin toss.
      But it didn't need to be that way: Le'garde absolutely had the charisma to convince the current holders of the Cube to part with it, one way or another, without violence, and then Le'garde could have used other means than a failed coup that would get all of his men killed to gain access to the Dungeon of Fear and Hunger, leveraging his charisma and reputation to get in without being imprisoned. Had he done so, he'd have marched in with an army at his back, and the metaphorical coin would never have flipped, his success practically guaranteed. It was the harder path, but it would have been safer.
      Because Le'garde did things the easy way and sacrificed others to reach his "destiny" as soon as possible, though, he unknowingly put himself into the hands of random chance, which in the world of F&H will absolutely overrule prophecy. This may well be the ultimate lesson of F&H: It's better to do things the slow and steady way than to do things the faster and riskier way, since there's no guarantee that chance will favor you, and the opposite may very well be true. Never let that coin leave your hand, because once it is flipped, you lose all control over the outcome you might have once had.

      While both worlds are undeniably grim, it’s still fascinating how fate plays a huge role in the game. The only way to make sense of its arbitrarily unfair world is through a coin flip-a blind hope of some sort.

F&H is a lot more forgiving once you understand how everything works, The RUclips F&H community is starting to really pick up, and there's plenty of info on RUclips and elsewhere that will make the game a lot easier to handle. Even if you're hot garbage at Survival RPGs, I do recommend giving the games a go. They're super-cheap, and they are an experience.

      It's kind of analogous to how the notion of love has changed a lot since the bronze age. One cool interpretation is to see how much Gro-Goroth seems to represent common tropes of historical patriarchy while Sylvian seems to represent the historical rarity of reciprocal and emotional love, love instead being forced into a purely pragmatic, carnal, and reproductive practice.
      Sylvian seems like a goddess who tried to create emotional love, but the cruel world humans found themselves if instead focused on carnal and reproductive "love" for the purpose of survival and sensory gratification. Mycenaean and classical Greeks often considered women to exist purely for reproductive and carnal purposes, and often not people to share emotional affection.
      Gro-Goroth on the flip side is violent and destructive in all ways yet perversely curious. Gro-Goroth has the same vibes as the conquistador - a masculine figure in awe of the world who discovers through dismantling/destruction and plunders rather than builds. Also kind of like the myth of Caesar cutting open his own mother to see where he came from. Everything that Sylvian regrettably builds through purely pragmatic love and procreation, Gro-Goroth surgically plunders and destroys, forcing something new to take its place.
      These gods representing systemic rules is IMO a very interesting interpretation of these gods. The old world was ruled largely by these forces of Sylvian and Gro-Goroth - pragmatic and loveless reproduction/creation and patriarchal destruction, brutish power, and war. Alll-mer represented a radical shift to societies ruled by codified religious morality, but the hidden and unspoken undercurrent throughout all this time is the Depths, Fear and Hunger. Fear and Hunger were always there as a natural force, but in the coming industrial age of capitalism, Fear and Hunger as the major god of humanity's own creation is directly analogous to artificial poverty. While the old world was ruled by the harsh realities of nature and brute force, the new world is ruled by the self-perpetuating suffering we make for ourselves - a yoke we whip ourselves with to drive ourselves forward.

    I really have to applaud how much sense this all makes. Cahara being the one who takes the girl to the depths makes the most sense since he's the only one of the 4 people who gets no mention in the sequel while the other 3 at least have some impact or are implied to have been around. I kept wondering though how it'd fit for him to take the girl to the depths at all since he was only there to get money for his love and their new child. Why would he even care what happens to her? But the cast meeting in some way and temporarily uniting for a while to intersect stories feels really cohesive.
    Only thing that doesn't get mentioned is how a certain someone becomes a certain yellow being in the sequel but I just assume maybe when he got remade and started acting like he was a God, maybe he just wandered to the throne with D'arce and sat on it and the rest was history. But either way, amazing job putting the pieces together like this. You really helped me settle some doubts about how the story could've rolled into Termina. I hope you'll someday do a video on Termina lore itself!

      I made a community post about this. He's most likely a meat vampire passing himself off as a god. If you cast rot on him in battle, it rips his fake skin off and you can see the blood monster underneath, fangs and all.
      Cahara I think based on his dialog in the brothel is a responsible/heroic guy deep down. This being a dark fantasy story, that winds up biting him in the ass. Or maybe he escapes, but I was out of characters to send down there with her and he has a living descendant so it's probably canon-safe if he dies 😅

    • @windego999
      @windego999 Год назад +266

      @Worm Girl Oh, that's neat, I didn't know he turned back into the blood monster if you cast Rot. That's the piece I was missing! So he just goes around masquerading as a God. Cahara being responsible also makes sense since the whole reason he went down there was to find money to take care of his woman and their unborn kid. It wouldn't be a good look for the soon to be parent to completely ignore a child lost in the dungeons. The entire explanation is satisfying, I feel. Thanks for the response!

      Cahara does hold the Endless Spirit and the Girl’s mother was the Endless One. I wouldn’t be surprised if she latched onto him unknowingly, especially since the form she takes as the God looks a lot like a doll…perhaps an homage to her father since it’s described that the doll she’s given looks a lot like Le’Garde too but by the time they find him she probably believes he’s dead and gone.

      Donnovan's writings in Termina suggest that there might only be one soul of each type and it's all the same person endlessly reincarnating, even living simultaneously. The idea that the girl might be sensing the same soul is really sad and sweet if it's true.
      Nilvan's plan was always to use Le'garde to father a child and get the girl to the heart of darkness so she could surpass him. Her soul may have even been acting through Cahara to do that, if he is indeed the one who took her down there.

    • @alexandragabitto2573
      @alexandragabitto2573 Год назад +103

      @Worm Girl - True! I also wanted to add that Cahara could be another Beserk reference to the character Casca. Her name is in Portuguese (due to Japanese-Portuguese influence no doubt,) but as a native Spanish speaker I can say that when translated it would most likely be the Spanish word “cascara.”
      “Cascara” means ‘shell,’ but not the object, the discarded ‘shell’ or ‘husk’ that is left behind when whatever is inside it is taken out. It’s a word associated with insects and other animals who shed their skin (Cicada shells are a good example,) the abandoned skin of a piece of fruit that’s been eaten, etc.
      It’s honestly one of the reasons why Beserk is considered problematic for its depictions of violence against women (amongst other things) as from the very start it’s clear ‘Casca’ never had a chance to be anything other than more trauma fodder for Guts. However, within the context of the lore of Fear & Hunger, there’s more room to make the argument that this is symbolic of Cahara’s “endless” possibilities to become anyone he wishes to be as a husk can be “filled” per se by anything one chooses.

    I like to believe time works in a very twisting way in the dungeon. The mist holding you in is because there's nothing beyond it. You're no longer a part of your original world, no longer in your original time.
    That would explain why so many pieces from different endings that couldn't possibly happen at the same time in OUR time frame appear in the second one.
    That's the theory I believe. Basically the reason so many references to different endings happened in the second one is because they all happened and none of them happened at the same time. They all exist and don't exist at the same time.

    One thing that's interesting is the marriage mechanic. 1+1 creates an unnatural looking but otherwise regular human result, but 2+1 creates a monster and 3+1 is even worse. Which implies there might be an issue with "asymmetry". So what happens if 2+2? If a "normal" marriage marries a "normal" marriage. Is the result "normal" or even worse? And further does that mean 4+2 makes a monster and 4+4 doesn't? Either way eventually you just get the platoon or human hydra i assume

    • @TheGrumbliestPuppy
      @TheGrumbliestPuppy 7 месяцев назад +114

      Asymmetry isn’t the issue, it’s that every marriage brings you closer to Sylvian’s love, and thus further from humanity and our reality. Her love can’t be returned by humans because it’s so alien, sort of how the way two humans can be in love can’t be understood or shared by a pet lizard. It can like you, but it’s brain just isn’t capable of comprehending those concepts/emotions.

      In my opinion 1 is the very image of a God and resemble humanity a 1+1=2 if not shared becomes like a Mutant or mutated type if the two combine to =1 is the very human this is how marriage should be to become as 1 rather than becoming 2
      Skip to 2 ,There is Number 3 which is a far worser than 2 but this numbers 2 and 3 still have a good and bad story so this number is not entirely Evil
      4 is the Void and no saving from it its the worse of the worse
      To my opinion this Numbers represents Human Division, or what we call the 4 dimensional
      Its very complicated but the real deal in the 4 Dimensional is the Number 3 where the True God lives
      The Gods here that represent the Game are only a God and Goddesses, the game didn't explain in what dimensional plane the story takes hold very confusing
      But this idea is i only reflect to what i understand in real life , New Order or birth of new Gods and Goddesses represents our future in real life too if the prophecy met this beings is likely to represent themselves as Gods and shale humanities belief
      I guess this game is likely on point and very interesting because most of what shown here is a hidden fact in disguise.

    In my headcannon, the little girl fell to the depths alone after being separated from Cahara or Darce. I think Darce abandoning the girl to rez Le'garde (albeit somewhat better than her S ending does) is where she truly shows how far she's fallen. How would this happen with the girl? Well I can see Darce causing a cave in by removing Blue sin and getting separated from her. Where the crow mauler chases the girl after that, not sure if it is just me, but he really wants to eat the girl's head the most when I fight him. Who fights the God of Fear and Hunger? The girl does. personally I think she is the one who has suffered the most and resists the divinity forced on her once she falls to the depths. But just as her warped soul tells her, why resist, why not embrace the end? And so she does, the child born in that vile place never left, all the small traces of kindness given to her by Darce via the doll, Cahara via the dagger he gifted her, in the end all of it meant nothing compared to the incarnated suffering of mankind. But the pain of that child, her struggle had a purpose. The question remains...was all that progress worth an innocent child's life. Knowing that Cahara is the only one who feels regret and dreams of that dungeon after attaining wealth, perhaps he is the one who still remembers the child as the individual she was, one last kindness given to her by a stranger that happened to meet her in that dark place.

    I think all characters went into the dungeon at the same time. Therefore, as NPCs we can assume that they're always attempting to go for their S Endings (Cahara for a better future of his wife, Enki for further pursuit of knowledge, truth, and power, Ragnvaldr to purge the evil of the land, and D'Arce to get back Legarde by any means necessary). With that fact settled, we can also assume Legarde "King in Yellow" ending and Girl's the God of Fear & Hunger ALSO happened, because of the facts we know in Termina. Last but not least, Grogoroth's Avatar ending also happened, because of Osaa's Nashrah accessory. As for who does all these things, if not the Main Character, well, we can assume that Either Ragnvaldr or D'Arce, two characters who are not necessarily in it for themselves, could have aided into the expedition party's reunion, before continuing with their own affairs, and that expedition ultimately rescued, and got betrayed, by Legarde. It is possible that the expedition party took a short rest in the safest place in the city, where Nilvan told them about her daughter and maybe they decided to aid the girl, out of righteousness and having no other purpose anymore. They somehow ended up in the Gauntlet of the God of the Depths and the girl put them in their final rest, out of mercy. There was no escape from the dungeons after all. Later, maybe Nashrah also found the open maw of the, now dead, God of the Depths, entered it, and only found the Avatar of Grogoroth, which killed him. So, canonically, maybe no Old God avatar is dead. And in Termina, even Rher just loses interest and floats away. It's very likely that even avatars are out of reach for mortals and new gods. At least that's my theory.

      I'd say it's a bit harder to do for Termina because there's no S-Endings yet and there's still some more content planned (Orange said he wants to make all 14 contestants playable) so in a sense the lore is 'incomplete' as of now unlike F&H. Remember that F&H1 didn't even have the S-endings during it's first release too and it was only several years later we got them.

  • @C_Kiri
    @C_Kiri Год назад +178

    One thing I really love about this game is the fact that it really feels like there is no 'true ending'. The endings are given notation that sounds like a ranking system of some kind, but the way it works is deliberately unsatisfying. If you want your chosen character to survive, they each have a cryptically achievable personalized S-ending, but aside from maybe Enki who gets to glimpse godhood and live to tell the tale, none of them are actually constructed in a way that feels like 'this is the ultimate challenge the game has to offer, for which you are given the best, truest, canonical outcome' like most games structure a True Ending (for example, see almost any SMT game, where yes you are allowed to make choices culminating in an ending, why would you side with Law or Chaos when you can instead choose to join up with Lucifer and fight both and then kill supergod, especially when that's The Real Ending)
    Ragnvaldr goes on his boss rush crusade, but then he simply walks away, becoming but one man trying to cow an infinitely teeming void beneath the earth; the strongest to ever live will only ever be one sword and one shield.
    D'arce has to fail her mission, then piece together the ritual, and once it's done, her role is over; no final challenge, simply a fade to black as she unleashes something great and terrible into the world.
    Cahara literally goes in, digs up some buried treasure, and gets out without making any sort of cosmically important imprint upon the world; he returns to life on the surface, and achieves what luxury he can, but is irrevocably traumatized and emotionally disfigured by what happened to him even in the best of timelines.
    To complete the ritual put forth by Nilvan the Endless One and witness the birth of the God of Fear and Hunger, achieving the most complicated 'generic' ending ranked 'A', is to consign your character to death and the future of the world at large into an era literally coined by the game itself as The Cruel Age ushered in and ruled over by an idea, an effigy of all-consuming pain and suffering.
    To descend the depths without seeking to do as Nilvan wishes, simply to discover what could possibly be at the bottom, is purely a meaningless exercise in self-destruction, to swing madly at the faint remnants of an Old One demanding answers that will not come except for those that drive you unto death with their knowledge.
    To rescue Le'garde from his fate at best delays the inevitable should you kill him, or at worst does nothing more than complete the latest turn of the wheel of new gods should you let him live.
    To become a god yourself is to fall for the exact same pitfall as all who came before you; no matter what you might want to believe, nothing you do makes you any different than them, and nothing can (except for following Enki's S-ending path, which even as much as that might make it sound like a positive thing, he ultimately does nothing to *stop* the darkness drowning this land, he simply becomes someone known for having chronicled it like none before him)
    And, of course, there is no such thing as escape when you have made the decision to delve inside. You are already consigned to one kind or another of cruel, heartless, pitch-dark oblivion. If you are lucky enough to get to make the choice for yourself, the only one you have left is which kind you want to experience.
    All of this is to say: this fucking rules, actually, and I think every game that wants to make me feel like my choices matter needs to make all roads equally unfulfilling, because if you have a True Final Boss and an associated canonical ending, that becomes the only one anyone ever realistically wants.
    Meanwhile this game basically makes you pick between a Puzzle Route with an ending that anticlimactically satisfies your character's journey, or a Final Boss that swiftly and summarily destroys your life regardless of your momentary victory, or dooms the entire world around you. Good shit, honestly.

    Now that I finished the video, I have to say that this game genuinely gives me goosebumps and shivers, it's pure horror and terror, not like some many games these days, it's not jumpscares or something terrifying, what makes a good horror it's the simple concept that you give it to, for example, the guards in the first floors are out of shape and form, and even adding that, they has the "stinger" that it's something that works, I know it is a penis but the simple concept it's what gives that game the Aura of an terrifying environment, I remember having nightmares after finding this game by the first time, still one of my favorites and everytime I played it, I used to found something new, very nice video, I hope you made something about Termina, it's not as remarkable as this one but the formula works on too, Termina has something that was missing in F&H and F&H has that something that complements Termina
