CGI artist here. I do not have a portfolio as I’ve took any job i was offered when i started out. Up till now after 3-4 years in the industry, I still have zero portfolio. All i did was work and work, producing models, rigs, simulations for clients. Most of them were self taught and I am a generalist at heart. So i think i could provide a few more pointers besides the really good and honest ones provided by Annabelle in the video.
First of all, specialising is the way to go if you would like to work in the big named companies. Nobody hires a generalist in such companies unless u are hired as a junior. All seniors are specialised in something.
Secondly, generalising ISN’T anyway worst than being a specialist (like what many believe) Of course, you have to be good at everything, not just mediocre and it takes years to reach a point of being a master of the whole CGI pipeline. I picked up Houdini , C++ and Phyton, even virtual reality soon after depending on the job I had. So do be prepared to learn new things that are not in your area. Of course, usually you wont be a full time artist, but a mixed of technical and art.
Thirdly, Generalist usually work in small to medium sized companies as bosses have lower budget on things and wants someone who does more than one thing compared to multi million dollar companies. However, this doesn’t mean you get paid lower in smaller companies. In fact, you get paid more as you are covering 2-3 man skills by being a generalist. Downside to this are : bosses expect alot from you, pipeline is not stable, pressures on you.
Lastly, if you are not really into art but more on technology, do source jobs NOT related to art. Medical, toy making, virtual production, education..etc usually PAYS MORE. I left the full time gaming industry to part time as I wanted more money and focused my time into learning skills that are highly technical so I can work in medical and education centres. Roughly getting paid 1.5-2x more and my working hours are not as shite as most production companies.

Thank you very much for the advice, I've been trying to find a way to do a career switch from programming (which is cool, but been really frustrated the last couple years) to 3D art (my real passion) but really been struggling as this industry is close to non existent where I live (Mexico...) and being self-taught I'm really struggling with the mentorship part, but at least confirmed that I'm not wrong on the idea to take some extra time to actually take my skills to the next level.

I saw that Anakin Skywalker and thought, I sure remember seeing this somewhere. Looked you up on Artstation and turns out, I was already following you all along ;p
    Pretty cool stuff.
I think the best advice is, don't give up. The stuff you'll make at the start will most likely look like crap, and that's okay. Learning is a process, it takes years. So don't give up after 3 months.
Just like you I took a 3D generalist DEC course here in Montreal, and then a 1 year course (AEC) in modeling for games, and so 4 years later, here I am, still needing to work on my portfolio...it still isn't good enough. But it's getting there !

great video, especially the part about the specialization. colleges only want you to be a generalist so they can try to get their employment rates as high as possible, which makes no sense because I've never heard a studio (besides a small one) want a generalist. Being specialized makes you a lot more valuable. (This comes from someone working in a 2D studio but seems like things are the same over here)

Very useful video! I'm quitting my job to focus on studying 3d for games (character mostly) and this helps a lot. When you talk about a mentor, are they always paid? How much is the average? Thank you very much!

    •  3 года назад +3

Hey Glad you found this usefull!! :)
So I found some artists who gave me feedback for free
The one mentor I had cost me 1000$ (100$ an hour) but he was actually teaching me a lot of notions, not only giving me feedback
      Does that makes sense?

    • @fractalelement857
      @fractalelement857 2 года назад +9

Dude, do not quit your job just to focus studying 3d art for games. its interesting but very likely you will regret it. This is caniballistic industry. Keep your job but rather learn 3d art on a side. Its ok if its your passion and you want to pursue it, but always keep your safe job !!! You will spend hundreds of dollars on those studying schools and programs but there will always be some more talented artists that will get a job.
If you dont trust me, remember this comment after 5 - 7 years and you will figure out then.
      Good luck anyway.

Hi your video is really great.
I am also new at this 3D modelling and I want to go into Character artist....but as a beginner I find it hard to find the proper guidance and I Get it there are online courses but they just make one character and then that's it from there.....which I don't find that much useful I want to know the whole workflow of gaming industry.

    •  2 года назад +2

when you work in the industry you have to get specialized. It's not that it's not important to know the entire workflow of a game, just not necessary.
If you want to become a character artist, then knowing the character workflow is all you need :)

So you basically finished college and gave yourself an year to do the actual studying part?
Well, that sucks. I'm a dropout of college and it really scares me at how much we're pressured to go in education institutions to even start our professional lives.
    Good luck, fellow artists.

    •  2 года назад

not really accurate how you phrase it haha
I could have applied for a job after college, BUT since we hadnt seen much about making characters, I didnt have any in my portfolio.
I know some who had job right after in environemnts for instance since we had more classes on that subject

Hi, I am just starting out, doing some online courses (aiming to be a 3D - Character Artist). Where did you learn Human Anatomy from? Can you suggest any good books or sources to learn and make my Anatomy fundamentals strong?
    Thanks in advance.....

      Hi Samyak,
learned anatomy by looking at 3D ecorche online (on websites like sketchfab) I find it more resourceful than 2d pictures

Money solves everything but when you're broke you'll have to improve by yourself.
I can't afford mentor because there are too expensive.
Not everybody can afford mentors or university.
May I ask how many years you're making 3d art ?

    •  2 года назад +2

When I was working on my portfolio for a year, I didn't pay for anything, I didn't have the money :)
The people who tutored me did it in good will. They couldn't be as present as a paid mentor, I only got feedback once in a will, but it was good enough for me

      @ thanks for unsering 😊.
I've been studying 3d like 2 years selftaught because there no such 3d university in my country.
And studying in other country's are too expensive.
I'm trying get a jop as fast impossible, But i don't know if my quality profolio is good enough.
