      That would be interesting. I always feel doubtful pursuing this path because I can see lots of talented people that are younger than me.

      Christopher Huber hey man. I've been working as a chef for 10 years. I have been doing 6 months of blender and it doesn't feel like work to me, it feels like I was meant to do this. I tried programming and I liked it a lot but then I got introduced to a modeling course and I haven't looked back since.

    • @KevinSmith-qi5yn
      @KevinSmith-qi5yn 6 лет назад +8

      @Christopher Huber
      I am the same. I went to AI and not a single art job. Right now I have a pretty good job that pays well with excellent benefits. So it's difficult to think should I try to pursue the game industry again. With the game industry you kind of know what you are in for. Work terrible hours due to poor management, most of the royalties are paid to the producers, don't get paid well compared to similar positions in other industries, then get fired once your work is not needed.
      As for my work, I was good but not great and had trouble showing how well I can work. Definitely overcoming procrastination while sitting at your computer is tough. It's easier when there is nothing around to distract you with strict deadlines.
      Moving to the Blender community was probably the best move I have made in regards to 3D. The tool is a lot better than both 3DS Max and Maya. The support from the community is a lot better. However, you will have difficulty finding work if you do most of your work in Blender since most studios don't use or want to support it. You at least need to know how to get your work into 3DS Max or Maya from Blender.

    Was retrenched at a senior animator job when the studio had financial problems. This happened after losing my mother to a stroke. Had to take a job with lower pay and bad projects for over 2 years. Lucky to say I'm doing great work again at a new job. Life does gets dark and it's tough to keep your passion alive. Glad to say It has turned around again.

    I feel so identified with this guy, I graduate from college as a graphic designer, since that I feel like this past 5 years I have been jumping from a field to another looking for a place to fit, I started working in the advertisement industry, then on architecture, then on web design, lastly on programming, but what I always wanted to do since I was young was to design characters, environments, etc for video games. Honestly, every day I think more about that and what made me step back was fear of thinking that I won't be good enough to get into the video games industry because I don't have any more time to dedicate to learning to reach that level. After hearing this story I realize that I was wrong and it is wrong to think that you don't have the skills without even trying, and he is right, I'm just lazy and trapped in a comfort zone.
    Thanks for posting this interview +Blender Guru and +Daniel Orive what an amazing interview. I will give another shot to my dreams.

    • @SkillipEvolver
      @SkillipEvolver 6 лет назад

      Carlos Garcia glad to hear for you personally that it's a matter of breaking out the comfort zone. -i think a tricky (trickier?) problem can be if your lack of faith in yourself can stop you from being motivated (by thinking you're not good enough). -but you don't seem to be at that stage and that is great. :-) honestly I think that. -does that make sense? Also I wanted to ask you about getting work in architecture. This kind of reflects my current situation a little bit. --i historically always wanted to make content for games. But I'm not really imaginative in fictional/fantasy character design. I was more inspired by projects like the grand theft auto games and their reflection of the real world, in terms of pop culture characters, and architectural design. With that in mind, I begun to model buildings. Just because they are obviously non-organic for the most part. I've been trying to approach architects to see if I could offer visualisation services to them but I haven't been very successful. -its possible that my 'finished' work is not demonstrative enough of the final pitch (I haven't rendered them with any lighting yet, and have v.little texturing). Sort of hit a block in the road a bit because I model on an old pc, new a new one to render really, but GPU are so expensive STILL. -thanks bitcoin :-p
      I started to think that maybe ppl were just not interested in a non-architect doing their work. (Maybe it's true, or maybe it's my incomplete work).. can you offer any insight into what you got up to in terms of architecture?
      just so you can see what I mean about unfinished work / not 'final' -(I'm talking about the kind of rendered images you see in promotional materials), here is my stuff: www.sketchfab.com/skillipevolver

      I have a question is it hard to find a job as a 3d artist? I feel like I don't wanna put soo much time into this if I can't find a job in Sweden

    • @carlosgarcia3931
      @carlosgarcia3931 6 лет назад +3

      Well, I live in South America, the 3d industry is smaller than Europe, I realized this fast, so I changed my goal from 'Work in videogames' to 'Work in 3d', I started to research what other industries rely on 3d. I found that the easiest way to improve my 3d skills was in architecture, visual merchandising, motion graphics, and graphic design. I started in visual merchandising making visuals of displays for stores and supermarket, this projects are small, short, and fast, and will help you to build a portfolio, in your free time you could work in personal projects related to videogames, so you could apply later for a job inside the videogames industry in your country or abroad.

      but to be honest, CG design is way more difficult even when you are majored in. The market only need the top one to design something. Unlike coding, and other fields.

    my god, this is gold for me, I'm currently a UX Designer who's aspiring for concept art myself:) , this is part of my research. Feels good to see there are others who've transitioned from different fields into concept art as well. Kudos
