Mike, I wish you had known my father in-law. When he visited, he took great joy in slightly, ever so slightly tilting anything hanging on the walls. Photos, paintings, posters, you name it. He would leave my brother in-laws home and his wife would have a nervous breakdown finding the stuff he set askew. He would have loved your stacked and stickered lumber.
Enter my youngest son, the comedian, home from college. Clock above the sink, dead battery, can't reach, he grabs it for me. I replace the battery, reset the clock, he replaces it above the sink. Next day, clock is 20 minutes slow, crap old battery. Get step ladder, new battery. Two days later, clock is now 55 minutes slow. Come on, another bad battery! Replace. Day five, catch my son turning the clock back 35 minutes. As I glared at him and he had snot squirting out his nose...He mused, Pappy Al had nothing on me. Two weeks after he returned to school, my wife was staring at the wall above the micro wave cart. She realized the picture from the kitchen was hanging in the dining room and the picture she was looking at belonged in the dining room. He is.....The master!!!

I sure wish Melissa was there to help you stack and sticker this lumber. As you said Mike, earlier in the video, you are pretty particular about the stack and sticker process. Melissa, on the other hand, doesn't care for your need for such precision in the stack and sticker process. You guys get me laughing so hard with Mike sticking to his guns (no pun intended) and Melissa just doing her thing with the stacking the lumber as she sees fit. Mike, I think she does it just to wind you clock a bit. I miss the good ole' days.

You might think about building a drying shed. If you've ever seen a tobacco barn, it's something like that. I worked as a hardwood broker for several years and got to understand the process pretty well. Air movement is also key to air drying.

Hi Mike, great job on stacking the red pine. One note on placing stickers...the closer you can put a sticker to the end of the board, the better because if the wood is going to check, it will almost always stop at the sticker. Keep up the great work!

When you were talking about the 1/16th it reminded me of when I was an apprentice bricklayer many many years ago, I had a very good Forman and he ran his crew like a army boot camp, wanted all the head joints (vertical) to line up perfectly, he always asked what is 1/16th X 16= 1 inch. He was a great teacher.
    Blessings on this resurrection weekend.

Hi Mike. Was that Levi helping earlier? I wondered? Why Melissa doesn't help you? She adds her " character " to your video. ???? Beautiful red pine lumber. I agree about stacking. I'm going to try building a " greenhouse." For my future lumber boards. It can get up in the 90s. While it's in the upper 20s outside. That will dry the lumber naturally. ( My best friend's family had one.) I saw Pete 319 & Lauren stopped by Mark Galicic & Ed Horvath sawmill over the weekend. He's walking w/ a full leg brace. He's walking well too. 😍😊😉👍🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 Thanks Mike. Say Hi to Melissa, Eva, & Hunter. 😍😊😉👍❤️💜🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🌲

I hope your oak stickers won't stain the pine boards. Oak farm firewood showed how his oak firewood, stored outside in toads, stained his new concrete pads because the tannins in the oak washed out of the wood. Keeping the stack dry and inside may be the remedy for that I hope.

In order to insure you have consistency in your sticker placement you could make a template that you use over and over to lineup the the next sticker. You could have perfect alignment blindfolded.

I've no idea at all if you watch them. I'm not promoting another channel on yours, but I want to make sure you know about Woodmizers auto log loader. You can load 12 or so logs onto it. Control it at your controls. With Levi helping you, you could put a chair at your controls! See it in operation at Log Capitol Lumber Yard. The boss, dad, bought a new L70 wide for his two daughters, Emerald and Jade to operate. Adding that to your mill would make it easier and more efficient. What you said about stacking the boards makes perfect sense. Why go through all the time and effort to end up w a bunch of warped boards?! There's an old saying for that, "If it's worth doing, it's worth doing right." There's nothing wrong w perfection. As always, you just gave us another great video! Thank you.👍🚜❤️🙏🇺🇸🇺🇸

Mike, I am not a critic or telling you "I think" .... those two words irritate me and figure it would you as well. I am talking about having a lot of wain to trim off. A man of many years of lumbering taught me to only go a quarter turn... a ninety degree as to the one eighty turn the log. After that continue as said, a quarter at a time. What I found was a lot less trimming of wain on one side. I will not in any way try to say your way is wrong, I watched you take training to saw with this mill and you know more now than I probably ever learned.... Just a thought Mike, you might enjoy a different way and its all in experimenting the different ways people have milled wood. I enjoy seeing your progress as your much more comfortable now with the new saw system you have. Please understand that my thoughts are just sharing my experience with milling

You spoke awhile back about closing in the pavilion and stated you were not sure about walls because you were not sure how you wanted to store your equipment.
That got me thinking, why not do a wall of sliding doors across the long side given access to each bay and the end wall for the saw mill. Then do a solid wall across the back. Then the end where the bunker is, leave open and extend the roof to cover your conveyor and the wood bunk. That would keep you, your equipment and the split wood out of the weather.

I have to say Mike, we may not agree on wood that should go to the burn pit. But, we are borderline anil retentive when it comes to making any kind of stacked material.👍 Good work 🍻🇺🇸

Hey Mike, why do you band the stickered pile if it’s relatively green? Guessing it helps from warping?

    • @boooshes
      @boooshes Месяц назад

Yes, it helps with warping - you can also add weight to the top. Banding also helps it stay in place when you need to move it. Banding often needs to be tightened as the lumber dries and shrinks.

You should look into getting a used edger to quickly take care of those second cuts with bark on. Will save you a lot of rework and handling.

Reeeeally, figured you'd just throw it together haphazardly like everything else Mike. 😂😂

Mike, I was thinking 🤔 Lots of people save those edgings from the logs and then strip the bark off and then use for siding to give that log cabin look to their buildings. A log cabin type chicken coup, or woodshed might look pretty good? Peace and blessings. 🙏😇

Our 45 turkeys here in North Idaho are doing the same as yours, our weather has also turned colder for about 5 days, then will warm up into the 50s again. Hope you all have a great day!

Good evening from Upstate South Carolina. Your sawmill needs a cab. Nice turkey. Have another productive day.
BTW, Mike, that stack of red pine weighs about 2000 lbs as it sits.

That stack of lumber is so satisfactory to look at, Mr. meticulous Mike! I'm the same way, however, I was tempted to be a wisecrack and say the same thing that Melissa said about the burgers last year, "Just throw them on there, Mike!"

I was always told by the German cabinet makers at a shop we worked at that stickers should be the same species as the wood being stacked otherwise you’ll end up with sticker stains on the wood.
