  • Episode 358. Another Saturday in January and another value whisky review. Have you tried Canadian Club 100% rye or Chairman Select Rye? I can’t believe this is still as affordable as it is in my market. I get some fruit, spice, and sweet toffee or fragrant vanilla. All good, but the slight marker or young alcohol with shorter finish keeps it from being a favourite. What are your thoughts on this release? #whiskyfabric#whiskytube#whiskyneighbour

I've not had this one, but I like the original Canadian Club - not as a straight up drinker, but with a mixer. You can't beat it for that As I always say, "Drink your whiskey the way you like it." Another great review Jon.

For low-cost 100% rye, you can't beat Alberta Premium, in my opinion. It is about the same price as the Canadian Club in my neighbourhood, and much richer, fuller, and tastier.

Great recommendation and certainly the bottle to compare it too. Distilled at the same place, but aged much differently. Thanks for sharing!

Great review. It’s a good budget option. Another I like in the 19-21 range is Alberta Springs 10 year. Worth trying.

I'm quite fond of this rye, it reminds me of this apple-caramel pudding cake my mother use to make when I was a kid. I think it's a good whisky at a decent price, not a masterpiece but still enjoyable.

On sale 2 weeks in a row for $19.99, like come on! A steal in my opinion as long as you keep it in the right context.
Really love the value series, keep it up!

You have done an Alberta Premium rye review (the basic cheapie), and the Canadian Club 100% rye review, but I would love you to do a side by side tasting.
I just tried a blind tasting of the two budget ryes, and the Canadian Club came out on top for me, more herbal rye notes that I love in Lot 40. The AP had a deeper taste, but kind of faint magic marker on the nose and slightly bitter aftertaste in contrast to the CC relatively long lingering rye finish considering it's a budget entry basic proof
However, I tried them both in Manhattans blind (same recipe) and the AP came out on top. The CC was too sweet and almost cloying.
I don't love either, but hey, they are both cheap and often on sale for cheaper, so I won't hesitate to keep a discounted bottle of either on hand.
I also revisited the Milam and Green Port rye after watching your year end picks. I had a sample of it a couple years ago but forgot about it. Glad I tried it again. I enjoyed the first taste very much.

It would be good to do them side by side. Your notes are very complete though, sounds like I might side the same way! Glad you tried the Milam and Greet Port Rye again. That one hits for me!

Wow Canadians really like the Ryes. Ive been on ryes for a bit but Ive been going back to Bourbon the last couple months and I really want to go back to rye and I want another straight rye but with maybe a high proof. Any suggestions?
I did want to note if the flavor is there I think this would be a good to transfer to a decanter and the guests wont judge on the bottle haha. You do some really nice candid reviews and give that friendly neighbor feel. Thanks!

Thanks for the encouragement. Have you had Lot 40? Great Canadian Rye and honestly worth 2 to 3x the price of this. I also really enjoy Pikesville Rye, and certainly good coming from Bourbon

Despite the 100% Rye it's certainly more of a bourbon drinkers rye. It has a great taste but unfortunately its a bit too weak to really enjoy neat or in a cocktail. Still okay though and honestly it's better than a lot of stuff at that price point, I'd rather stick to Rittenhouse, Lot 40 and Sazerac.

    • @WhiskyNeighbour

Totally agree, and with your other choices. They are twice the cost though, so that factors in a bit if cash is tight. Cheers!
