- Continuing my walk through rye this fall I thought I would look at two entry level rye expressions from different but iconic Canadian distillers. Canadian Club 100% Chairman Select Rye and JP Wiser's Double Still (now Triple Cask) Both are good mixers and can be enjoyed neat, but with enough difference in flavour to keep it interesting. If you want to read a bit more, jump over to my blog at whiskyneighbour.blogspot.ca/ Enjoy! #whiskyfabric#whiskytube#whiskyneighbour #whiskyfabric#whiskytube#whiskyneighbour
Thats funny you say you can't get away from the buttery notes of the Wiser Double Still. I found the same thing, and on the Canadian Club the note that I cant escape from is Pear! That's the exact reason I haven't bought either of those bottles since and it's interesting you shared somewhat of a similar experience.
Very interesting. It's been a very long time nwo since I've tried either, but I would be willing to try a repeat one day. Thanks for sharing, Cheers!
Glad to have found this antique video gem : forward to 2021, head-2-head vs Dark Oak Lot 40/ . . . what a diff.
Wow, this is getting old! What do you think of Dark Oak?
@@WhiskyNeighbour LOVE the nose on triple, but - BUT, Dark is very anisey ( love extreme whiskies) like my 42 yo Blair Athol scotch. at 30 min, triple loses aroma but Dark retains = at 24h , Dark shines and clearly shows it is NON chilfiltered with that Canadian nmaimo-coloured mist ! ! ! . . .
@@ironmantran Awesome!
Hey Jon, Just poured a CC100% with you. Love this in cocktails and is one of my favourite Whiskys at $50 or less. Great review.
This video is getting a bit old, I may need to ice up and review again! This is good in cocktails for me too, thanks for sipping along, cheers!
Great comparison. Cheers.
Thanks for dropping in an checking out my channel. I must say, I am a little jealous of the expressions you review on your show, but I'm working on the collection!
Thanks very much.
Just cleaning up old comments. Thanks for dropping in!
excellent quality review
Micah Dunlap Thanks!
Great video! I tried the Pike Creek 21 today and it did not disappoint!!
Awesome! With all that Scottish influence ... Sláinte!
I agree with everything you said on the CC 100% Rye, I’ll have to try the Wiser’s Triple Barrel !
Cool!
Canadian C. Rye has soft gentle nose fruity, floral similar to Jameson Irish whisky. At $20 range this is a good deal quick daily sipping , or with just one piece of ice. For beginner scotch lover, this can be a daily budget replacement over an expensive scotch. Cheers. Scotch woman.
I agree. This is really good for its price bracket!
I can't get over the price of the Canadian club 100% rye
Riley Whisky it is staggering. And even with all of the positive reviews it is still so low!
its nice to have a good whisky that doesn't make me feel too guilty if i polish off the bottle. i hope they dont jack up the price anytime soon. great comparison by the way.
Riley Whisky thanks. Also, I totally know what you mean. Even if someone gives me a nice bottle, I almost feel guilty drinking it unless it is a special event! Here is to a great, drinkable and affordable Rye 🥃
cheers
great video is always a love coming back to this one when I'm doing my rye showdowns! have you ever tried the JP wiser's triple barrel rye if not I think the tasting notes are similar but maybe more to your liking and there is some interesting things in there like I get melon balls, black pepper, minimal caramel sweetness but nevertheless it's a good contender to the CC 100% rye and again like you said for the price why not have it on your shelf! cheers and keep up the great work!!
Great notes for an affordable Rye. This video is getting old, but I still pick up a CC every now and then. Thanks for the encouragement, cheers!
@@WhiskyNeighbour CC Rye is a beautiful Budget Sipper IMO great for when you aren't totally trying to engage in the full whisky tasting experience and just sip something simple!
Cheers and as they say an oldie but a goodie lol
My issue with Canadian whiskey is they are just so full of sweet molasses tones for me, just too sweet and I like bourbon, it's a different sweetness. I get so much of that on the nose and even on the palette, with Canadian whiskey. What I find with this rye is that it has less of that. Still there on the nose, but it's so much cleaner on the palette. That's what I like about it. I usually like my whiskey straight up, maybe a touch of water, but I actually find this rye does really well with ice for some reason. Something happens to it. Give it a try with ice if you haven't.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. What do you think of Lot 40 Rye? Spicier than these, but I would also suggest less molasses sweetness.
@@WhiskyNeighbour Neat, real time experience here, having the chairman select along with you finishing your vid here still. I have tried lot 40 and I agree it does pull back that sweetness. Been a bit since I had it so can't comment on the spice, will have to try again. Higher price point but indeed a nice bottle. I'd like to see the Canadian whiskey makers follow that direction in pulling back the molasses tones. It's just too much caramel. It needs to be drier in my opinion. Closer to Irish whiskey.
@@WhiskyNeighbour Also, dig your delivery and manner. Good job with the review.
@@humanonearth1 Thank you! I certainly enjoy sharing my thoughts!
@@WhiskyNeighbour Absolutely, you are a stand up gentleman sir. I'm watching your review of Elijah Craig now. Which I'm a fan of.
Cool comparison! Though I've tried both and I found the flavour of them, particularly the CC, not as ... vibrant as reviewers find. They were both smooth and taste like rye, but didn't knock my socks off the way Bulleit rye did. It's possible I just need to give them another try, I've only been exploring whisky since last summer. Or it's possible I'm more of a bourbon guy - I really like the vanilla notes in Forty Creek, which is also a fantastic value, and the smoothness of Gibson's Rare. How do CC and Wiser's stack up to Bulliet Rye and Lot 40 (which I have yet to get to?)
I think you have nailed it. CC and Wisers are good, but smoothed out, so missing some of that fuller fruit or deeper spice. I really enjoy the Bulleit Rye, but it is rough. Lot 40 is fantastic. Closer to Bulleit than CC, but more fruit.
@@WhiskyNeighbour Finally got around to trying Lot 40 yesterday - and hoo boy is it good! Tons of rye bread and citrus. Really nice.
@@JonathanAwesomeify so glad you could. It continues to be a favorite of mine!
Hi John, great reviews. I stock up on Canadian whiskys when i am back in Edm. I am living in Hong Kong. Can you suggest a few shops where do you buy your stock in the Edm area? Thanks.
Yes! I usually start and finish with Chateau Louis on Kingsway. If I am looking for Scotch, the Keg n Cork on 99 in South Edmonton is fantastic. Then it really is a mix of driving around for good deals. Wine and Beyond has a great selection, but I seem to only buy there if they have a sale. The regular price is high.
Whisky Neighbour hi John. Thanks for the buying tips. I'll be in EDM the 2nd week of June. Where can I find info on tastings during this time?
Nitrox Hockey most places use eventbrite. Just search whisky or scotch, etc and you should find some. I will admit, work has really taken over the last few months and I am out of touch. Hopefully that gets you started.
Hello again neighbour! Slowly getting through your archives here! What Bible School did you attend? I went to Rocky Mountain Bible College a few years ago :)
I attended two. On overseas in Germany, it was part of the Capenwray schools. The other in Winnipeg. It has become part of Canadian Mennonite University now. I do not know much about the Rocky Mountain Bible College, was it a short program or a full bachelor degree?
Oh neat! A friend of mine did the Germany Capenwray just a couple years ago!
I just did a one year program at RMC fresh out of high school. It was really great, unfortunately the school has turned into an online sort of deal, simply because more people were signing up for that type of course. The campus is located just across Crowchild Trail from the U of C, though I don't think the current rendition of RMC operates outs of there anymore.
Cool. I think meeting together is richer than online, but I understand the importance of that learning too.
