Canada, The Scotts settled Nova Scotia, The Irish were a huge part of the history of Montreal not just the French. The English,Scotts & Irish immigrants influenced the The spirits of 🍁 Canada
The Scots also settled in Ontario, particularly southwestern Ontario. John Kenneth Galbraith, a famous economist and speech writer for John F. Kennedy when he was President, was born and raised in Iona Station, Ontario, which is in the southwest part of the province. In the county where I was born, there are villages like Aberarder, Camlachie and Shetland, all names that come from Scotland. In fact, when my home town was being founded, the Scots who lived there wanted to call it Port Glasgow, while the English settlers wanted to call it Buenos Aires. Since they couldn't agree on the name, they literally went down the middle and chose the Roman name for one of the Channel Islands in the UK, which sit more or less in the middle of the English Channel. The Scots also settled in large numbers in Alberta. Place names like Calgary, Airdrie and Banff all come from Scotland. And for what it's worth, my surname is Scottish. My paternal great-grandparents left Scotland in 1911 to settle in Canada.
@@stevestruthers6180 The difference is that the Scots who settled Atlantic Canada were almost all highlanders kicked out during the clearances starting in the second half of the 1700s where Scottish immigration patterns to the rest of the country were from all over Scotland. A Gaelic speaking family (who speaks no English) from the outer Hebrides kicked off of their land by the crown and ending up in Nova Scotia is a little different than a Scots speaking Glaswegian intentionally moving to Ontario for better economic prospects.
@@h.angusmacdonald2119 You are absolutely right. I wasn't deliberately excluding the Highlanders or their contributions to Canada's development. Although many Highlanders settled in Ontario for better economic prospects as well. Some were victims of the Highland Clearances and some were not, having emigrated to Canada much later. Large numbers of them settled in eastern Ontario, particularly in the Lanark County and United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry region. Queen's University in nearby Kingston was originally an all-Gaelic speaking university. My great-great-great-great-grandfather on my mother's side came from the Highlands and originally settled in Lanark County before moving on to put down roots in Lambton County. His brother chose to move to New York state. And for what it's worth, Ancestry says I have (on my mother's side) a third cousin with the MacDonald surname who lives on Cape Breton Island. So I am only too aware of the huge influence that the Highlanders had on Canada. Alba gu brath.

Nova Scotia means new scotland. We have so many bloody Scots here and its fantastic. Newfoundland has a lot of Irish people too
@@stevestruthers6180 The difference is that the Scots who settled Atlantic Canada were almost all highlanders kicked out during the clearances starting in the second half of the 1700s where Scottish immigration patterns to the rest of the country were from all over Scotland.
