The miracle of YT... half way round the world I'm watching you repair fiberglass so I can make a repair on my RV. Good job and thanks.
How good! 👌 thanks for watching 🙏🏻
Commendable effort on a bandaid solution to a rather major repair works. Plenty room for improvement lads.
Definitely no experts around here 😂 but we did the best we could at the time.
I can't touch fiber glass without filling it up my skin somehow but this guy just grabbed it 😂😂😂
😂😂😂 he’s about as rough as the hole in the boat aye. Been around glass most of his life too.
This is s a perfect instructional video on how not to repair below the water line hull punctures. Wrong type of resin, wrong type of glass, didn’t repair the stringer from the top, didn’t grind back the glass around the puncture to the right degree and then use corresponding glass levels etc etc, could go on forever.
Who said it was supposed to be an instructional video, just documenting my repair. But thank you. If you want to, feel free to come and help me do a video on how it should be done properly mate. I’m no bothered either way 💁♂️
What type of resin needed to be used?
Bulkhead repair be first job, skip that straight to wonder spray foam
Beer box has waxed surface for easy release
If it dints IE no memory to it.! There will always be a cavity....! Water will sit and rot around it.
Basically if you jump into your boat and the foam under the 3 layers of glass the fibreglass is just a structure strength in many directions. No memory IE cavities delamination...!
Water ingress....!
Polyethylene I think is only one in the way of foams that is close to 2% water soak up over lifetime basically... Thermolite/coosaboard ect are just blended glass structure + glues+ polyethylene?....still 2% rot over lifetime.
Mad lad bare knuckling that fiberglass! Talk about MAN HANDS!
He’s a hard old bloke 😂
Outstanding video & a good job! I like the use of the foam first...
Cheers mate. The foam made it a bit easier to get the shape right, no structural support obviously though. 😅
Awesome video guys!
Thanks 🙏🏻
Looks good 👍
Well done fellas! I have some of this to do and know next to nothing about fiberglass/gelcoat work so this video really helps me kindof understand what Im aiming for. Thanks for sharing
Haha cheers! 🤙🏻 Glad you got something out of the video, and hopefully it helps 😅
Yeah it’s a great place and a job
That’s wild mate! You guys did a great job on the boat and great job at giving me a laugh through the whole video 😂 was well put together, I have absolutely no use for any of these tips, but it was so interesting to watch how it’s done in case it ever happens to me 🤣 keep it up Josh 👌🎣
Hahaha that’s good to hear mate. Always like to give people something to laugh at, it’s entertainment for a reason 😂
Hopefully this doesn’t happen to you anytime soon.
Good job brother 👏🏼 👍🏼 thank you.
Thanks mate 🤙
Runs in the family Josh...ask your grand dad about when he hit an upright tree (the only tree in the river)that was towering about 20 feet out of the water on the 12 mile up on the Normanby river back in the 80s.
Hahaha definitely runs on the family 😆 almost hereditary 😅
Great patch job. The original damage shouldn’t be able to be peeled apart by hand. Looked like a dry layup from the manufacturer. Respect from California. Cheers!
Thanks for the comment🤙🏻 you’re definitely right, she was probably like that from manufacture.
Mate - nice work on the repair. Old boy to the rescue!
Cheers bud 🤙 the old boy is always good at getting me out of the shit 😂
@@BrisVegasFishing I am right there with you brother 😂- Always good to get the grey hairs onto it
@@MrJononj hahahaha that’s it aye 😂
Hey mate, looks like your dad has done a bit of glasswork in his Time.. quality vid
Cheers mate, good to hear it. Boat building runs in the family, my grandfather is an old ship wright. So the old man’s definitely done a bit of work in his time.
Towed the boat up to Mackay and the bow rest broke off on the ride up. The piece of metal left over from the break punctured a hole right through the front. Looks like your video will be a great help, I’ll definitely grab some of that foam spray.😊
Aww no mate! That’s cooked 😬 hope the vid does help you. That expanda foam works great for awkward jobs like that.
@@BrisVegasFishing ohh well, good practice to give it a go. Might beef up around the little metal bit that you pull the boat on the trailer with (don’t know its name). Then find a person to weld the trailer. Fun and games!!
@@Timbuctoo all fun and games 😂 boat maintenance is just never ending aye 😅
Nice boat.
Love boat adventure at hight rapid river at k2 rivers
Thanks mate. Really keen to see how it turns out
That was a very interesting vid mate, you did a good job on it, good job fixing it as well. Could I ask where were you when it happened. Cheers love your work.
Thanks mate. 🤙🏻 glad you enjoyed the vid. I was in the upper reaches of the Brisbane when I hit something just under the waters surface. No idea what it was either 🤔
Your dad is pretty good at fiberglass repairs. Your lucky to have him.
He’s such a wealth of knowledge and it’s multi generational. His father is a shipwright and has so much knowledge to share too.
Wernt in boggy creek I know of a star picket 150 mtrs up stream from dirt ramp. At galvanised bridge and it at a dangerous height at medium tide it just starts to show its self ?
This was up near jindalee mate. Could’ve been anything, couldn’t see it when we hit it.
Sounds like you’ve had a near miss with that star picket mate. Good crabbing up boggy creek. 👌
Hey mate I love all your videos man
I just bought my first glass boat and I do the exact same fishing crabbing you do.
I want to know why you choose to have a glass boat and not a tinnie ?
Thanks mate
Thanks mate. Appreciate it 🤙
Good question, I come from a family of boat builders so I’ve always been around glass boats. There’s many different reasons why I prefer glass over ally. But the main one for argument sake is noise in the water, when you’re in a glass boat you don’t get that water slap. When you’re in an ally boat it sounds like you’re in a coke can on the water. 😅
Very nice looking job but I was really surprised you didn’t use any glass woven glass that’s a really need to be really strong in that area. Did you have any problems later on?
One of those best you could do at the time, if we wanted to spend more time and pull the deck up it would’ve been better. But cause it was quite a curved, high wear area didn’t wanna use wovens. Definitely would’ve given more strength. So far it’s held up really well and not worn through or busted again. 🤞
It appears you used all chopped strand mat ? It will plug the hole , but does not have much strength on its own . If the area beyond the hole was damaged or cracked, you may want to add a few layers of biaxial or woven roving. I would keep a close eye on it as it is. It may be fine. Best wishes.
Yeah just chopped mat. It’s holding up well, the rest of the area was already previously strengthened when we first got the hull. Thanks for the comment though.
@@BrisVegasFishing nope you need to use matt then cloth then matt etc or a combination matt like 1708. And mate you didn’t even replace the stringer you ripped off either, completely nuts, you need to cut a hole in the floor from the top, dig that Bunnings foam out and tab in a new stringer from the top. And also glass in the repair from the top to the inside of the hull.
What type of foam did you use? I Nedd to do a similar repair but was told resin will melt the foam.
Aslo how long do you wait better layer ? Thanks
We just used the tins of expanda foam you can buy from most hardware stores. The foam is more there just to help keep the shape of the hull. So it’s easier to glass it. If it melts that fine. Wait time can depend on the weather and how ‘hot’ you mix your resin with hardener. We would just give it a couple hours between layers. And then sand back/ apply acetone between layers.
Love the vid great job aswell btw., And I met your old boy tonight... And that's how I found your channel 😉. Added a subscription aswell and look forward to looking through some of your vids
Haha wicked mate. Thanks for the support! 👍 he’s the greatest fisherman I know, wouldn’t have the channel where it is without him 👌
Watched this whole video and im just trying to fix my rusty car and i dont even have a boat 🤷🏻🤣 fuckin stayed for the comedy hahahahaha
😂😂😂 the damn distraction of RUclips. 2 blokes one boat 👌
What is the spray foam product you were using. Thank you
It’s expanda foam, the brand is Bostic. But there are few different brands you can use.
Hey mate how’s it holding up? About to do this myself.
It’s holding up really well aye. No dramas whatsoever.
I’m curious if this repair held up so far, likely doing some fiberglass work soon but want the repairs to last
It’s held up fine over a year later, but look I’d definitely recommend repairing from the inside of the hull before doing the outside. This will give you far better strength and longevity. However if it’s like my boat and you can’t get to the inside without creating more work it’ll be fine.
Is this patch still holding up nicely? I bought a boat with a hole and a shop told me it’s rotten and refused to take on the job. Now I need to do it myself. I really like this video and I’m gonna do a similar technique
Yeah still holding up well considering the lazy nature in which we patched it 😂 definitely would recommend glassing up from the inside if possible. But definitely remove as much of that rotten material as you can. We were lucky that we’d previously replaced all the stringers up to that bulk head. That small rotten peace was all that remained from the original stringers.
Cheaper too fix than picking up a shopping bag around your leg water pickup,
I would have added some shark tooth graphics but good job guys!
Hahaha would’ve been mint 😂
100% must laminate woven roving layers to the inside first. re shaping the keel. than staggered layering to the outside followed by fairing and gel coatgelcoat
Yes, you are correct. They patched it with chopped strand mat. By itself it is not very strong, biaxial or woven roving would have been a good addition to the repair
Master
Cheers mate. Legend at work.
Hi wondering why you didn't taper the area
We weren’t to concerned with getting a perfect taper, but there was some what of a taper there still. The camera angle probably doesn’t show it too well.
Was hoping for more detail on the actual fiberglass products used with names and mixing instructions.
Apologies for that. I’ll have to keep that in mind next time i do some glass work and make it into a video.
I think you had some damage already that weakened that area. I can’t image anything floating that would do this. Water intrusion a little at a time weakens the hull. Some of that debris coming out looked rotten. Maybe you should of worked in a metal edge.
Haha that rotten piece was part of the original stringer from when the boat was first built. The damage stopped when it hit the new bulk head we’d installed a few years ago.
Pretty sure what we hit going down the river was part of a pontoon or metal gangway, cause you’re right it’s hard to imagine hitting a piece of debris could do that much damage. Loads of rubbish in the river after the floods though.
friend what material did you use?
Just basic glass mat aye. Basic epoxy resin and hardener.
Thank you! Just one more doubt. what material is this that you apply from the can, this one right after you place the cardboard. I can't read the name and I don't speak English so if you speak in the video I can't understand. so if you can tell me the name i would appreciate it.
@@BrisVegasFishing epoxy or polyester resin I thought, either way love your work, I might try the coffee and a port trick before I go sanding again tomorrow haha
@@weburnitatbothends it’s a wicked good combo 😂👌
Starts out with "I went out for a run," and "A long story short, I put a hole in the boat." . . . Kinda want to hear how that went down lol
Hahaha well we’d gone up the river a few month after they’d had some big floods. So there was still a lot of debris still coming down the river. Pretty sure it must’ve been some scrap metal we’d hit either from a pontoon or a 44 gallon drum. Just about threw us out the boat when it happened.
You KNOW 😏.. SHIT happens.. lol 😂
Pre much aye 🤣🤣🤣
Mom’s gonna be mad that you used her 150.00 pampered chef knife to cut on your boat!
😂😂 shh don’t tell 🤫
You didn't hit anything hard the old boat is soft. Great work btw God bless your old head. 💪
😂😂😂 okay 👌
Flowcoat has wax in it.😮
Holy shit, yeah that's a hole.
Hahaha 😅 yeah it is
That didn't just happen, you are dangerous! :)
😂😂 it was not a safe time to be on the water.
Woven roving has very high impact/ burst strength whereas chopped mat has very low burst strength.
Yeah that’d be why it broke through in the first place then? The original hull wasn’t real strong in that case 😂
@@BrisVegasFishing That and the rotted wood was a clue. Probably a stem piece turned to mulch.
@@paulbriggs3072 it was the last piece of rotten timber that we hadn’t replaced from way back when we first replaced the stringers. If the rest was rotten the hole would’ve gone back way further on impact 😅
@@BrisVegasFishing Aha.
Might as well put in a bow thruster at this point.
She’d be a weapon then 😂
Be sure to do a video down the track of how the repair has held up to show the internet experts 👍
Hahaha I should hey 😂👌 next video I’ll have to make mention of that.
Negative pothole, except it’s not a pocket of air but a space of solid,
Wouldn’t like to buy this boat after this repair 🤨
😂😂😂 yeah I wouldn’t either. We only paid $45 to start with, bought it from the local tip.
looks like some really old fiberglass.
Yeah that section was part of the original stringer and it only crushed back to where the new bulk head started.
Good job mate. F@ck some people will whinge...literally about anything. May not be to standard, but good on yas for having a crack at it yourselves and saving thousands and probably months of wait time. If it splits out again, then go in from the top and sort out the stringer and use the woven material.. if it never has any issues, then you done well.. shes only a tiddly anyways. #tightlines bud
Thanks mate really appreciate the comment. And you’re right it’s definitely a stronger repair if done from the inside. That busted stringer was the last bit of the original, when we originally rebuilt the boat we fixed up as far as the bulk head. Hence why the hole didn’t go back further. But if it does open back up we’ll just have to take the time to go back in and fix it properly. Tight lines 🤙
Buy him some shoes and a belt please
Hahahaha the barefoot fibreglass man 😂
Not good job.
Shit job aye 😂
Handling broken fiberglass without gloves and googles is unacceptable.
Bro my boat didnt even touch the water 😢
What happened??
Needing gas i let one of my buddies pull it up while i went in to pay, when i came out he was already trying to fix it 😢
@@axdresherxaxdez8137 🥲 that’s a quick turn around. Turns out you can’t let him near a boat then 😂
Done wrong
Thank you 👍
Please trim your moustache! It's very distracting 😂
Oh it’s fully gone now 😂 no more distractions 😂
Too much talking ….
😂😂😂 cheers for the criticism
please translate arabic
Pretty awful videoing, made me seasick…
Porque recina epoxi si esta fabricado con resina regular
Yeah it’s a great place and a job
Thanks mate 🤙
