This has become my favorite channel and I watch a lot of sailing/boat work channels! Super nice that you make 2 videos a week! Hopefully you’re subscribed numbers go up drastically!
Hey guys, thanks for the video today. I’m climbing the walls in that weird “between Xmas and New Year” period, getting angry with Fat Boris and wondering what to do to keep myself entertained. Then your video popped up and saved me for a few mins. Cheers 👍. Happy New Year
Botchy. But may keep floating. Your quite the formula guru. How ever I would estimate UNACCURATE. Your feathering is a mere guess. Syhster is the result of what comes to mind. Oh n luv😍 the missus more n more each episode. Carry on.💋
Didn’t your mother ever teach you “if you don’t have anything nice to say don’t say anything at all!” Maybe your new years resolution should be to be a nicer person. We like constructive criticism but not flat out miserable a**h*** s*** Happy new year! 😎
Looking good. You’re doing a hull of a job there. Time to move onto Steve’s osmosis treatment. That peeler is doing a great job, and the teeth seem to be lasting quite well. They are 4 sided? I tell ya. It’s not every woman who’d let their man spend hours on end with a peeler!😉 Great job guys. Have a Happy New Year
@@BarefootTravels did you ever get someone to help with the color choice on your boat? I just fairly recently got a new program and would be willing to give it a shot, if you’re interested. SolidWorks is my strong suit, but I could give it a go. If you need something designed in SolidWorks I could help with that too. Being that you’re 2700km From my shop, I can’t help much with the physical work though😢
Glass repairs of this nature should start with the largest size patch of glass fiber first working layer by layer to the smallest patch thus the first layer having the largest possible surface contact area.Think of the repair as a scarf joint and you will see the logic.
This is the biggest controversy when it comes to fibreglassing. If you had 10 experts 5 would say to start with the biggest. 5 would say to start with the smallest.
@@BarefootTravels correct if you useing chopstrand mat but if you use the glass you are using when you sand it back down you cutting through the top layer of glass over the top of the edge of the glass under it,you can see this already on your small round repairs that you are sanding.andy and others arnt experts they are trades people the experts are the people who make the glass and resin and they recomend the big layer first
Seems more like consensus is small to large from the videos I have researched and online readings. I am about to do repair and will be doing small to large. I can see it both ways but if the largest patch starts to delaminateit will take the smaller ones with it as it's built upon that single layer
This is great. My wife and I planning on getting a Lagoon 440 or Leopard 45 and I am watching your fiberglass work and loving the education. I would recommend you check out Free Range Sailing 's channel as well. He has some amazing (to me at least) fiberglass boat techniques, albeit on a smaller mono-hull. I love how he makes custom fiberglass mount bases for the deck gear. Check that out.
I'm not very sensitive to the glass and use the tape trick as well. I have seen others suggest coating your arms with some talcum powder before sanding, but never tried it.
I need to do some small reapair from scraping rocks. Nothing all the way through. What can I use instead of a gelcoat scraper? I have a hand held power planer and grinder and sander. Thank you.
Barefoot Sail just want to help you with the Fiberglass in the Air and on your body. In between your Planner, Grinder and Sander install a catch Bucket so your Shop Vac only gets Air. I see you have a 5 gal bucket ,do you have the Lid? just put two inlets in Lid then your good to Go. No more empty the SHOPVAC.
@@BarefootTravels if you like to see it work watch this Couple that brought one but with you ,you can build one and safe money. Expeditoin EVANS. HAVE A GREAT New Year. You are there now. Peace
Well, if you mix 300ml of resin with 100ml of hardener youre making 400ml of finished product meaning you’ve mixed it 25 percent hardener to 75 percent resin
Sorry bud but your glassing skills are not good, needs more layers, not strong enough for that size hole, flailing compound not strong, glass should go to edge of gelcoat, glad I don't boat with you, my life is worth more than 3 layers of fiberglass, due some research please
I have read about this type of repair but it is so fantastic to watch it actually in process. Thanks so much for the wonderful teaching.
Thanks for watching!
Really enjoyed this informative video. Enjoy the sunshine, it's cold here. Gene

Fingers crossed!!!
Great job guys... really interesting to watch.... thanks.... say hi to Foxy for me....
Thanks Ron!
Nice job keeping your wits about you and shutting that thing off when you lost power.
Thanks for watching!!
Beautiful flying RD flag on the back. Amazing work sir. I just did some repairs on my boat and I must admit the gelcoat peeler made me a bit jealous.😅
Brilliant repairs!! I love how your boat is slowly starting to come together.
It is slowly coming together isn’t it! Thanks for watching!
Awesome job guys! I wish there was a gel peeler back in my boat work days.
It does make the work a lot easier.
Nice one as always
Thank you!

Yes we got a few different options. We haven’t made a decision yet though
Wish I had teeth like that peeler. Never have to visit the dentist again.
300 / 10 * 3,4 = (90 + 12 = 102ml) . . . i love it - be prepared for the new year

Never needed to try the talcum powder trick but heard of that as well!
Cheers mate!
Very good 🎄👍🥃🇬🇧

You should wear a mask when mixing the white powder and put the top bottle B lol .
Excuse the pun Dave but CRACK on .... Sorry just having a HOLE lot of fun ...

If it’s a small damage just use a grinder. A hand held power planer will only working a flat surface. Cheers!
@@BarefootTravels Thank you.
Nice progress with the gelcoat peeler. Beginning to look like a good investment.
- How much did you shell out for the beast?
Thank you! It is a fantastic tool.
They run at around $1500
@@BarefootTravels Not cheap - but with the amount of work it pays off
That’s for sure!
its a fantastic, 1500 USD tool.
It seems that no one is currently selling that gel coat peeler, or at least, it is very difficult to find.
Paintshaver.com is where we got this one
Gelpeeler pro. We sent an email and heard back from them very quickly great customer service!
If only the actual work went as fast as the speedy-up bits. ;
Haha yes exactly!!
hey budy, where to use mat and where to use gloth???
heeehaaa ... 1st one .. cheers guy's 👍😘
Cheers!!
Does this boat need anything besides fiberglass?
A mast lol 😂 plexiglass Windows for sure. A few other bits

11:30 am on New Year’s Eve
12.5 hours to go I suppose until the new year
Have you noticed any sun damage to your exposed epoxy repairs yet?
None
Isn't 3 parts resin to 1 part catalyst 25% (rather than 33%) because that's 1 in 4?
Ah! - acknowledged as a blooper.
It is 33% catalyst. We had to do the peel test earlier as 25% was not enough.
Ha ha ha a third of 300🍺
Sometimes you second guess yourself on camera. 😂
Well, if you mix 300ml of resin with 100ml of hardener youre making 400ml of finished product meaning you’ve mixed it 25 percent hardener to 75 percent resin
Public math is the worst!
😂😂 right! 99mL so he was close when he said 100 😆
@$# MATH !!!
😂😂😂
99 %
33% of 300. Really!
Sometimes you second guess yourself when your on camera. S*** happens
90 ml not 90 % sorry .
99 mL

We are not finished with this repair. We will be doing way more than three layers. This was the first step.
Glad to hear that you are going farther, being a marine mechanic with extensive fiberglass background i was concerned, look forward to more videos
