    The setting up is much the same as a power wood planer! Well done for showing people that a bit of time and patience spent on adjustment is well worth it. Buy yourself a good quality straight edge to set the blades.

    It’s a learning process. It looks great and is getting better. Soon you will be a master with that tool, And you will be able, if you wish to make a lot of money, in the future. treating osmosis bubbles and removing gel coat from damaged boats. There are not a lot of these tools in use and even fewer people with your overall skill set.

    • @BarefootTravels
      @BarefootTravels  3 года назад +3

      I agree. I will be a master of this tool soon I think! Learning more and more every day!

    Jesus, I looked on ebay for one of these tools and I quickly shut the ebay page down LOL....I was mortified by the price not that I needed one but my curiosity got the better of me. I never seen any available here in the UK they're only available in the USA from what I've seen. So, plod on davy helping your fellow boaties and may I wish you all, a very happy and eventful 2021.

    Looking good guys and its def hard work . Just a heads up re the Osmosis . Once its peeled you should pressure wash the bottom to rid all of the stale water etc possibly 2 times and then let it dry out The main reason is there will be salt deposits everywhere under the gel coat .

    • @BarefootTravels
      @BarefootTravels  3 года назад +1

      Yes that was the plan. We will wash it down a couple times. Then let it dry out for a few weeks. Maybe even a month of dry time depending on the weather here and what we see happening.
      We’ll go back to working on our boat during that time.

    Well done. We all learn as you go. If you leave the old blisters, "Yes" you won't sink much. Just 1mm at a time, as your fibreglass, core material absorbers moisture. I suppose that way you become more of a cruiser and less of a sailor. All you have to do is move your waterline line higher.

  • @CheersWarren
    @CheersWarren 3 года назад +1

    So Davey that's great to see all that had work you are doing on this old Catalac 10M.
    BUT much more important what it that interesting boat alongside the dock with the tall mast and wonderful long 'widowmaker bowsprit?' ..time for a short midweek boat yard tour?
    Oh, by the way gelcoat was 'brushed on' in England long after the rest of the world was spraying gelcoat to much more even thicknesses and easier to apply way to much too.
    Cheers Warren

    • @BarefootTravels
      @BarefootTravels  3 года назад

      Hey Warren!
      The sailboat on the dock is our friends boat. A Bristol Channel cutter. Isn’t it beautiful! It is for sale at the moment too!
      Maybe I will do a boat yard tour. Not a bad idea! 😆
      That makes sense the gelcoat varies in thickness in many places on that boat!
      Cheers Warren! Talk soon!

    They make carbide inserts with radius corners so it won't leave line in your work. Some inserts are 1.8 and some 2.0 thick. Any woodworking tools company carries them.Also, use a touch of never-seize on screws and they will remove much easier in contrasting metals.

    Thanks for a great channel!
    I can recommend you to use ear protection when using tools such as the peeler or in similar situations. You damage your hearing severely without it.

Also stay away from needles just drink drink a can of Schweppes tonic water every other day and take a 1000mg of vitamin C and a zinc tablet every day .But you don't need vitamin D tablet as you are getting lots of Sun where you are now , Not like hear in the UK must don't know what they can do we should take of this all the time to stop the bad flu virus getting the better of us the people of the world .

    Don't forget that your right arm will be stronger than your left most of the the time and push harder on your right so i would to be safe is to take cuts at 0.6 cuts or just use the old blades to start with to be on the safe side .

    Happy New Year guys. My goodness but doesn’t that make quick work of the paint. And a good consistent depth. How long do you think it would have taken the traditional way? I’ve been impressed with this tool all along, but when you are doing such a big area all at once, it’s benefits really stand out.

    • @BarefootTravels
      @BarefootTravels  3 года назад +3

      It would take days to do it the traditional way and much harder to keep a uniform depth!
      We are in love with this tool. One whole side in an afternoon. They say you can do a whole 35 foot monohull in one day.
      Thank you as always for watching Bob!

    Hi Davy, I looked up the peeler and was surprised at the cost. Looks like a quality tool and limited volume production. For a small job where you are doing as small section, could you use a cheep electric plainer? The plainer is similar but has a single long blade instead of the four small blades, I wonder how it would work.

    • @BarefootTravels
      @BarefootTravels  3 года назад +2

      Yer its not cheep bit its good , no the wood plane will only work on flat surfaces for small jobs just use a grinder with a flap disc

    • @BarefootTravels
      @BarefootTravels  3 года назад +2

      This one is made to follow the curve of a boat. I don’t think the cheap electric one would work the same way.
      It is an awesome tool and we are very happy with it.

    Why did you take the gelocat off? Were there osmosis bubbles that indicated hydrolysis? Those initial cuts seem to show bubbles in the gelcoat and nothing further into the fiberglass or core ...

    David..... in the future please show us you are unplugging that peeler before you put tools and your fingers anywhere near those blades.....I was cringing when you pulled the tool down when one side wasn’t cutting right and immediately put your fingers on the blades.....never trust switches or machines to be safe...always unplug first....I have seen some really gruesome accidents just because of this...Be safe and keep all your digits.

    Maybe go less of a bite and do two passes 90 degrees to eachother, it is a little more work but probably not bad. its worth a shot to see if it comes out without any ridges,
