  • In this episode of Barefoot Sail and Dive we set to work peeling off more gelcoat. It is a slower process than we originally expected partially due to the rain we've been getting but the tool is incredibly heavy so Davy has been working in short shifts with it. This is the second video in the osmosis series.
    We have also tackled a couple smaller jobs this week like taking the propellers off ... finally. We have been trying for weeks to get them to come off to no avail but finally with enough pb plaster they came off!
    Foxy would like to say hi to everyone. She hasn't had enough camera time lately so she says a massive HELLO!
    Hope you enjoy the thumbnail of this episode. I decided I wanted to see how heavy the tool really was and let's be honest I'm a bit cuter than Davy! If you do in fact read the description of the video leave us a comment below!

      It’s so hot when the sun is fully out. I have to wait until the sun moves and there is shade to work on the port side! But just finished that side today!! 💪
      Now to let it dry out!

    Hello to both of you
    Sorry for my English I use google translate and sometimes I don't understand what it translates. Thanks for the techniques of discovering and eliminating osmosis on the surfaces of fiberglass boats. I have no experience in this area if I understand correctly we find osmosis under the waterline of the fiberglass batteaux. Is that on boats with steel hulls or allumigum can we find problems of the same kind such as rust or other.
    Thank you and I wish you a happy new year 2021

    • @BarefootTravels
      @BarefootTravels  4 года назад +1

      Hi thanks for reaching out .... osmosis is only on fibre glass boats its a chemical reaction when water gets through to the glass ... regards davy

    Good morning. Love to see the latest video. Thank you. I admire FP boats but my eyes have been opened as to what might be hiding beneath the gel coat on very new hulls. Have FP given any feedback on the number of what appear to be factory imperfections? Have seen what look like factory imperfections on other FP boats on another youtube video channel. FP should be watching, supporting your work and engineering ways to fix their factory issues. Just my little country opinion from the cheap seats. Looking forward to the next video.
    Different topic but ... for what it might be worth ... my ignorant little arm chair brain hates throughhulls / sea cocks. Have you considerd whether you might seal these up and try to simplify onboard systems to avoid through hulls (specially below the water line) completely ? 🙄
    Peace

    • @BarefootTravels
      @BarefootTravels  4 года назад +1

      We only have 2 throughulls below the water line on our boat. The rest are on the waterline or above so we feel pretty confident with them.
      Thank you so much for watching and for your comments. We love the feedback!

  • @daviddailey4959

    On Little Sister, was this all due to just not having a barrier coat of epoxy not high enough up on the hull?

    • @BarefootTravels
      @BarefootTravels  4 года назад +2

      They haven’t been hauled out for 7 years. So lack of bottom paint in some areas. And yes n out having a barrier coat high enough.
      There is evidence that osmosis has been a problem that was tried to be fixed before. You’ll see Wednesday but we don’t think it was fixed properly.
      We are planning on using lots of epoxy barrier coat before final bottom paint to fix the problem once and for all.

    A good way to help the drying process after peeling is to wash the bare fiberglass with ammonia bleach and fresh water to remove the polyester breakdown products.

    Accent question: are you saying Adhesive Filler (maybe a filler that's sticky) or D-Sieve (maybe a mesh size "D" for the added particles)?

    Nice videos!
    Not sure why you are spending so many hours helping your neighbor when you have so much to do. Should have offered to buy the tool together and sell it when both done. Seems much much cheaper than your labor rate!
    Good luck!

      We are in the middle of a world pandemic. Not a whole lot else to do plus it feels good to help people who are so kind.
      With so many countries locked down even if we finished our boat there is no where really to go

    We enjoy your videos guys but there is too much repetition especially with regards to the osmosis etc. Say it a couple of times at most, I realise it is difficult to make enough content when you're doing the same thing but it would have been more interesting if you had of taken vid of your trips to see the other boats for your mates and the walk through of them. That would have been interesting because we're also looking for a boat. All the best.
