- The boat work continues this week as we fair minor repairs on the hull, fibreglass the large holes caused from osmosis blistering and demonstrate how we hand painted the topsides of our hull using the easy and cost effective "Roll and Tip Method".
This video was filmed in Townsville in September 2018.

I miss these sailing vids. They were the best 😢❤
Your tipping the wrong way...wet edge back to where you have already painted...not towards the wet edge.
Your blister work on the other hand...was spot on! Nice work.
Thanks doc. I've since been shown the error of my ways. Should have thinned it a lot harder too in the heat. Next time.
@@FreeRangeLiving Words for your viewers, not you: Tipping, yeah, Play at it (practice) with junk paint on scrap wood to get the feel, so your hand learns how before learning on your beloved boat with expensive paint. Brush (with paint in it but not excess) from dry area moving touchdown while moving into fully painted wet area, dragging through a good length of wet painted area, lifting up & off while still moving at good speed. Use good brushes.
It's good to see that cruising isn't all bikini's, island hopping, sun downers, and the glamorous lifestyle. Great video as always you two. thank you for sharing!
Such a pleasure watching someone else working! I know the great feeling you get when all that patchwork disappears under that final coat.
You've made me a little more enthusiastic about coating. Future me is a bit worried about this coating business. So that's helped take a bit of the stress off him.
'This Old Boat' by Don Casey is the book for you my friend.
You two are an inspiration as you work together so nicely showing us how to care for the hull on the boat.
Great progress!
Looks good!
Excellent as usual!!!
Great video cheers!
Every video from you is like a visit with dear friends, relaxing, informative, rejuvenating. Just a total pleasure! And I always learn something! thanks!!
Brilliant.
Thank you for the video 🙏

love your practical approach
Love every second of the yard episodes!
Great info guys... thanks for all the tips.
Superb episode
Nice Job
I stupidly put my hand up to help out doing this same job on a 48 foot Beneteau. Lot of work doing it by hand like that, and you sure sleep well after each day.
It is looking great !!! Keep up the great work.
The best part of this video is the picture at the end. The love shows my friend, for the boat and for Pascal. Stay thirsty my friend.
The refit series is beautiful. Good job, mates!
Great piece of teamwork
A very satisfying video.
Glorious, glorious sanding! Looking spiffy guys.
i love you guys - orlando florida
You two are the coolest afloat!
As Norwegian i found it funny when you said Jotun. Only episode 70 to go, and i have cought up with all Videos. This is a very good Chanel, actualy on of the best.
Nice job
I always learn something on every episode from you two. Thank you so much!
Boat is looking quite good! Lots of work. Teamwork!!
She's really looking great! Can't wait till the next video!
She's always looked great Mate, so does the boat! ;-)
Great work there...and Troy you have a lovely assistant...
You guys are awesome together! Love the care you put into the boat, and each other. Thanks for sharing!!
Thanks Guys. RUclips highlight of the week.
Wow ! Amazing ! I can really get in to your educational videos ! Absolutely the very best ! Cheers !
Great channel you two, I have learned loads about boats and the ocean. Keep em coming guys !
Love how you two work together, and top notch first mate !
Great vlog ;-)
Marool looks great ... ⚘❤⚘
Great episode! As normal packed with information and great to see you both getting on so well as a couple.
I love the extra care and attention you take for such a beautiful old ship.
Good show the old gal going to look good as new thanks for.sharing
Great footage and good quality the info was very helpful step by step good job looking forward for the next .
Great video! Love the subject matter. Thanks for showing us how you work on your hull
She's coming together just fine... Good job to you both! I love the in depth explanation of everything you guys do to your boat =)
Looking good guys. Can't wait to see the finish product. Troy you almost have her trained right lol.
You guys do good work. Good video content and good boat repair.
1014TOMCAT one of the things I like about watching reminds me of my wife we did everything together rebuilt cars four wheelers and fishing
I learn soooo much every time I watch one of your vids. These videos are really educational. Keep em coming.
Great episode guys, thanks! Hey Pascal, I see you have as hard a time letting go of a super comfortable work shirt as I do!
Outstanding , she will be a lovely sea bird once again , good team work as well
Outstanding couple and very very informative to the points.Good on ya mates, keep em coming 🥰
I say wot a bloody good job mike Angelo we’d be proud of ya
I always thought roll and tip was just using a roller and brush. I didn't know it was a technique. 🤣🤣🤣 Thanks for educating me.
Just found your site, great video. I truly appriciate watching a good team, you guys do well together. Thank You!
Pascal you are the best tipper. Ever saw!
Nice work, also like that you are using a product that we can get easily in Australia.
its got a nice eggshell sheen, i like.
Such a beautiful classic and voluptuous hull shape. I like that you sail a classic yacht and not a flash modern vessel because I can relate to that.
We are fitting a bow thruster in the next few week's and the way you guys showed the fibreglassing techniques has helped us massively, so thank you very much for sharing 👌🏼
Another great video and highly educational .... learn something from you guys every video 👌
Sail 2 Spear Totally agree 👍🏼
Learning to do glass work before you tube was big it was fun plus we where doing it on rc race boats but our favorite were the 2 kevlar hulls and the one carbon fiber we had
Looking Fantastic. Nothing beats a beautiful white finish‼️👍👍 GOOD LUCK GUYS, great team. Vinny 🇺🇸
Another great instructional video. You both make everything doable. (Side note: wonderful music choices this week.) Shot of finished job looks great!
Nice job again! Thanks for the great explanation of the layering technique that bonds the sides of the glass fiber rather than the ends. This easily justifies the larger to small layers and your the first I’ve seen to add the full size piece of glass cloth over the top. Thank you Troy - you are a good teacher.
Really good episode. Clear and simple explanation with great visuals too.
For me, you’ve taken the ‘scary’ out of this kind of restoration. Good onya 👍
I like your paint application techniques. Having spent several decades doing home repair and remodeling I know that surface prep is 90% of any paint job. Thanks for stressing that. Well done, you two. Your videos keep raising the bar.
Great video P&T and you must be pleased and proud of how Mirrool's significant hull work and fresh paint job have come out, well done!
Nice video
Acetone is also really good for fiberglass clean up👍👍
Next time you're doing fiberglass work get a bottle of baby powder apply heavily on any Exposed Skin stops fiberglass from sticking or entering pores causing maddening itching as a Young Man I worked in a Boatyard grinding out and replacing floors and painting boats and ran a fiberglass chop gun which regularly set the shed on fire during the summer when the sunshine hit dried teardrop resin working just like a magnifying lens great job on the boat
+just timing : I worked in similar (plastics fabrication) circumstances back in the mid 1960's, and a few metres away from my workbench was the fibreglass filament-chopping spray-gun operator, who wore a face mask and scruffy dungarees.
A partial screen of plastic sheeting separated us, while the breeze wafted through the workshop, allowing fine glass particles to glint in shafts of sunlight poking through holes and other openings in almost all of the large shed. The ongoing contract was the fabrication of a large diameter polypropylene pipeline reinforced with fibreglass sprayed on by my fellow workmate. My job was to weld the pipe sections prior to application of fiberglass.
We joked about it all, itching and scratching our way through those years, while puffing on our favourite brand of cigarettes. We were young and clueless to the dangers. A bit of talcum powder advice all those years ago, plus a face mask for everyone in the workshop would've made life a lot easier.
Of course I found a better job and gave up the smokes, so luckily can still breathe our city smog by the lung full with ease.
just timing That's a great bit of advice, thank you.
Sailing SV Compromise hope it helps thank you God bless
just timing Yes very helpful thank you.
prep is everything every thing is just cosmetics looking good guys
You two are brilliant at selling a product and getting people to buy in as you are getting it free.
Dont do this and just prep and run the whole area in one go.... They are your best results.
Just a note. Cut your chip brush shorter which will stiffen it. That will make it easer to push out bubbles and resin
She's looking beautiful. She'll give you a big hug later for the new wardrobe.
I know you guys must be missing the water but I do like the refit series. Great job.
I have a soft dodger/Bimini...in a couple years, i’ll replace it with a hard one. The fridge is good, but probably will add an Engel freezer in the aft cabin after hurricane season. My battery bank is 4x 6v golf cart batteries @ 12v house system and a separate 12v starter battery. It’s got a wind turbine, but Solar is definitely a priority. I’m loving my meths stove. As a backpacker, I’ve used tiny alcohol stoves. Now I’ve even got an oven! I’m blathering on and on... Thank you both for making a huge job seem do-able! Cheers.
For maximum adhesion prep/wipe the old fiberglass with styrene monomer not acetone... Jotun... Can't go wrong with Norwegian paint.. Cool episode, keep'em coming, please...
I'm all itchy just watching the glass repair . ☹ Happy to see that things are going well . I know it sucks being up on the hard .
Troy, your breadth and depth of technical knowledge is remarkable. I really enjoy your tutorials so I hope you keep them up. Finally here is one I will share with you. Ionic exchange simply means “charge based”. The most common use of ionic exchange is purification by exploiting the physical property of the electric charge of what you are trying to separate or purify. There are 2 types of exchangers anionic (has a positive charge) and cationic (has a negative charge). So how does relate to the anti-fouling paint. You said it has copper in it. Copper has a positive charge so it can be considered an anionic exchanger. Most colloids and many microbiological species have a negative charge. So my guess is that one way that the anti fouling coat works is by electrically repelling things that might want stick to the anti-fouling coat. Hope this is helpful.
I know this advise is a bit late as you two are probably half way down the Queensland Coast by now but being a painter for over 35 yrs I just had to say something and I hope this is not taken the wrong way but you should always tip off paint back into the section that was previously rolled out. This will give you a even coat and stop the appearance of stop/start brush marks in the surface of the paint. Love your Vids. and I hope you guys are anchored somewhere safe and sound with this late season Cyclone off the Queensland Coast wiping up some big seas at present.
We never take good advice the wrong way
Yes. Lifting off on the wet edge is better than beginning on it. Still, a lovely vid of a job well done!
Captain Bax did you watch the latest episode of SV Seeker? He was getting professional surface prep advice for protective coatings. Very informative.
@@MrRourk Yes mate I did, from memory that's a steel boat and fairly big one at that. They were talking about rust or should I say scale :), I'd be spraying it but spraying uses more paint believe it or not. As long as he has a few mates to help and keeps a wet edge, It should turn out OK.
Troy is a regular Pablo Picasso and I'm looking forward to seeing Pascale in the galley cooking up her wonderful dishes soon.
Good tip! 03:58
This was an advanced course on how to do repairs correctly, ....... TSP is the duct tape of cleaning products. Another fantastic video
Chop strand fibreglass used with epoxy resin is a filler layer between the structural laminate layers...there is a styrene binder in chop strand that keeps it together while dry, and dissolves with a Polyester or Vinylester resin. This does not happen with epoxy resin, so it is effectively a gap filler or thickness increasing layer. It is still strong though, but not as structurally strong as it could be.
Ryan Withers some chopped stand mat is manufactured with a different binder and is purpose made for use with epoxy resin.Even with the styrene binder have never seen problems when used with epoxy after 10yrs boat yard experience, but I don't claim to be an expert on the subject.
Powder binder is fine with epoxy..
@@bevantweedie5129 yes, that is why you class it as a filler layer. Not count it as a structural layer. I know you can get epoxy chop strand, but its a expensive and mostly pointless special order item.
Nice job you 2. Now find some good shelter and baton down them hatches. cheers.
Thanks for the vid as always very enjoyable ,I have a paint job coming up was thinking Inter perfection but may go with Jotun now you have made it look easy as. Did you find it necessary to add thinners ?
süper
Great vid. Thanks cos I'm just about to do my bum too.
My dad did this one time on a smaller boat. Pain in the.... he says
Boy, you guys are making Mirrool look like a new one, I hate to think how the price went up on my future boat : ) btw, it's funny seeing footwear on Pascale : )
