I think I can safely call this one of the most experimental oscars ever many of these movies were straight up experiments the more you think about it, boyhood taking 12 years to make, Grand Budapest with its constantly changing aspect ratios from full screen to letter box, right on down to looking like it was shot on 8mm, birdman with its exceptional cinematography the camera never breaking or cutting to another scene giving the appearance of being shot in one take, I haven't seen movie making like that in a long time.

I felt the same. Birdman: Or (The Unexpected Virtue Of Ignorance), Boyhood and The Grand Budapest Hotel are the movies has set a milestone in film making.
i'm sorry, as much as I liked Boyhood, it should not have won just because it was made over a span of 12 years and btw, if you combine all the time they ACTUALLY spent making the film, it's the same amount as any other film. Boyhood was like a seasonal job, meet up once a month and they had 12 years to prove upon the script and work on others. Alejandro definitely deserved Best Director. And if boyhood should've won anything other than Patricia Heaton winning, Best Picture would have ben suitable in Producing terms not artistic terms as that was well-deserved for Birdman. But lets not also forget how much The Academy loves movies about movies/showbusiness
Don't admire the film just because of its gimmick. However... it was robbed. Birdman was amazing, but Boyhood is a masterpiece, one of the best pictures made in the past 15 years.
Christian Boudreaux This was one of those years with two very exceptional films are up for Best Picture and Director... typically the academy is gracious enough to split the two awards... and had it done so, I would not be bitching. Birdman is a solid for Best Picture... so I'm not nearly as mad as I would be if any of the other six won (Especially American Sniper) however, I feel justice would have been served if Boyhood on Director and Birdman won picture... or vise verse... the fact that Birdman won both is what aagitates me.

I genuinely think that this was the last great year at the Oscars. Birdman, Whiplash, Boyhood and the Grand Budapest Hotel were far better than many of the films that have won Best Picture recently.
I think 2017 was also a good year because there was lots of brilliant movies that came out in 2016. Moonlight, La La Land, Manchester by the Sea, Fences, Arrival, Hacksaw Ridge, and Hell or High Water were all excellent movies and were also very different from each other which made it interesting.

Congrats to Iñarritu and to the other nominees who were as worthy as Birdman to win :)
My favorite film of 2014. I have no problems with this Oscar victory at all. :D I'm glad Michael Keaton got his moment. Without him, this film wouldn't have been as integrated or as meta as it ended up becoming. On a side note--Oscars channel, thank you for not skipping any part of the presentation. ^_^
Rand Paul 2016 - Free Kent Hovind Still, one mustn't be surprised. Once Redmayne won the other Golden Globe, he was Keaton's competition. Then, once Redmayne snowballed SAG (which was admittedly always up in the air) and BAFTA (which almost always goes Brit), the one-time critics-darling Keaton was made the runner-up.
BIRDMAN was amazing, and amazingly diverse. When talented people get together behind an amazing idea and a clear goal, it doesn't matter where they come from. Screenplay: Argentina + Mexico + USA Sound: Mexico + USA Cinematography: Mexico Cast: USA + UK Producers & Executive Producers: USA + Israel + Mexico ¡Que Vivan Hollywood y el Cine Latinoamericano!
EL ESCORPION DORADO I missed the fact that Bo & Giacobone were Associate Producers and not Executive Producers. I also forgot about Milchan. My bad, thank you for your correction.
It's not Latin American cinema, a film's nationality is determined by the budget's origin, in this case USA, regardless of the cast/crew nationalities.
American Sniper: 5/10 Birdman or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance: 10/10 Boyhood: 9/10 The Grand Budapest Hotel: 9/10 The Imitation Game: 9/10 Selma: 6/10 The Theory of Everything: 7/10 Whiplash: 10/10
I absolutely love this win and most of this year's big winners like not just Birdman, but Grand Budapest Hotel and Whiplash, which are all more outside the box choices. Usually, they go for prestige and sentimental over more cinematic filmmaking like when English Patient beat Fargo, Rocky beat Taxi Driver, and Dances with Wolves beat Goodfellas. So the first three mentioned films emerging as the big winners this year was a nice change of pace. Great job, Academy!
budapest was my favorite i know it was not gonna win but it's still my favorite movie of the past year, men wes anderson is a great filmaker and it was funny to see how the people who won for the movie thank to him for that
Superman13195 holy fuck seriously?!?! Dances with Wolves better than Goodfellas?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!??!?! also The English Patient is the most boring movie ever made, and don't say its because I don't appreciate movies that are slow paced. I loved Enemy and The Rover from this year. Brazil is also one of my favorite movies of all time, and Blade Runner is one of my favorite sci fi films. English Patient was just bad, and thats painful for me to say because I am a huge Ralph Fiennes fan.
Diego Pisfil Hey have you heard of this film called Boyhood, there’s a lot of great things about it, like taking 12 yrs to make, and the 12yrs they worked on it, and the period of time (12yrs) the director worked on it... and... uh
I love it when you see a movie totally snub in a particular year and then be seen as a classic as time passes by, even thought Birdman and Boyhood were the top contenders this year, it's very satisfying to see how Whiplash just has become the best rated movie of 2014 throughout all different critics and websites, and I think that's really what sticks in the end
***** Just because I say Einstein was even more genius than Turing doesn't mean I'm insulting him, it's just the way it is, at least from my point of view. Your statement makes no sense.
Birdman is my favourite. Whiplash and Imitation Game were phenomenonal. But two films that were not nominated that time were Interstellar and Gone girl. I absolutely adore those two movies.
The difference between Birdman and Boyhood is that Boyhood is just a child maturing into a man, and the special short moments within childhood. Not that that doesn't make a great movie, but the only thing truly original about Boyhood is the fact that it's the same face over 12 years. Birdman is more deserving of the award because it's more original and unique than all the other Best Picture contenders. I believe if it wasn't for Birdman, Boyhood definitely would have won because childhood is so, so special.
So proud that Birdman ended up winning! I also loved Boyhood but once you take the fact that it took 12 years to make it you realize that Birdman was the most innovative of the two. Inarritu is an incredible director and as a Mexican-born kid living in the US I look up to him and all the other directors/witers/producers (Cuaron and Del Toro for example) that arent afraid to make bold movies and tell innovative stories to the world, sharing their creativity and passion. Bravo Senor Inarritu bravo!
"Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)" has been nominated for 9 Academy Awards winning 4 Oscars: Original Screenplay, Cinematography, Directing, and Best Picture.
For all those people who say Boyhood was not a technical achievement because it was a 6-month production spread across 12 years, if you think about it, it actually was a technical achievement. Just imagine what the editor had to do - assembling 12 different annual events together and connecting them into one long jounrey. The film could have felt choppy or like one of those anthology movies, but it didn't.
I really want to the Oscars to bring back the pure creativity of the nomination graphics. This looks amazing! It makes every category exciting to look at
How it should have been: - Birdman - Boyhood - Gone Girl - The Grand Budapest Hotel - Guardians of the Galaxy - Interstellar - Leviathan - Whiplash Winner: Boyhood
Here's the right way though: Birdman Boyhood Gone Girl Grand Budapest Hotel Imitation Game Interstellar Nightcrawler Selma Theory of Everything Whiplash (WINNER)
, @@dariussalepetru9951 Boyhood is great and all, but it's definitely not the best imo. There were a couple of issues with the entire story coming together and unfortunately, it's not hard to notice them. Besides, almost all the other movies on here are better.
Si tan sólo Michael keaton y no el pelmazo de Eddie Redmayne hubiera ganado el Oscar a "mejor actor", hubiera sido uno de los mejores años con respecto a los oscar, en fin, bien hecho Birdman
I don't understand how so many people don't like this guy. In addition to being one of today's best directors, he appears to be an great person. The way people who work with him admire and respect him (and how he admires and respect them back) is beautiful.
Boyhood: moving, well- directed, great performance by Arquette, incredible using of a song (Hero), stunning journey through childhood. Birdman: powerful, original, greatest directing of the last years, amazing ensemble performances (highlighting Norton, Stone, Watts and obviously the spectacular Michael Keaton, great score and stunning cinematography and screenplay The Grand Budapest Hotel: original, great score, great performance by Fiennes, incredible makeup, hairstyle and costume design and a good screenplay. Imitation Game: correctly directed, good screenplay, outstanding performance by Cumberbatch and incredibly good score. Whiplash: tension, amazing performance by Simmons, great directing and a fine editing. American Sniper: correct performance by Cooper, correctly directed, mythologizing a definitely not-hero person, Bush propaganda and a good sound. Selma: Haven't watched it.
Alejandro Gonzalez Inaritu is visionary and trully the top Hollywood director at the moment. In 2016, he became the first director to win back-to-back Oscars for Best Picture (Birdman and The Revenant)) since 1950, 66 years prior.
My parent's moved here in 1975. I believe they are part of those who paved a better opportunity for other's like them. My father learned English while I was at grammar school. My mother taught herself. My Great-grandmother(my mom's grandmother) passed away August of 2015 at the age of 98. When he gave his speech, he holds truth and it made me think of how she came over and lived and worked to raise the family she carried over to this day.
If it was your race being recognized too you would be as proud as can be. As a a Mexican American having your race recognized is a pride and joy to all of my culture. Alejandro won 3 times: Writer / Director / Best Picture for Bidman beating Richard Linklater in those categories for Boyhood - whose supporing actress Patricia Arquette beat Alejandro's supporting actress Emma Stone. Both films won atleast 1 Oscar each.
What an incredible year for film, and so many fantastic films filled up the category. Boyhood, Whiplash, and Birdman were my top three favorites, and Birdman deserved it. So cool to see the Academy honor a film like Birdman.
looking back at this now, what a strong set of films this was. i’ve always been a bit pissed off that grand budapest hotel didn’t win best picture without knowing the other nominees. but birdman? boyhood? whiplash? all of these films are brilliant and progressive in their own ways. what a great field of nominees and the birdman oscar was very deserved 👏🏻
Here's my top 8 (and my opinions): 1. American Sniper (one of Clint Eastwood's best "shots", extraordinary Bradley Cooper, a deserved Oscar for sound editing); 2. The Grand Budapest Hotel (that genius of Wes Anderson strikes again, maybe his masterpiece, 4 deserved technical Oscars); 3. Birdman (without any doubt Iñárritu's best film, full of great ideas, awesome dialogues and with an amazing cast); 4. The Theory of Everything (2 marvellous characters/actors, a well adapted script and a wonderful music, still glad Redmayne won an Oscar); 5. Boyhood (more an experience than a movie, but what a great experience, deserved the award won by Patricia Arquette, Linklater should have won for best director); 6. Selma (an extraordinary and underrated true story with a memorable Martin Luther King played by David Oyelowo and one of the best original songs of these past editions, "Glory"); 7. Whiplash (maybe the breakthrough film of the year, with amazing groove, terrifying drama, a fenomenal Miles Teller and a memorable J. K. Simmons more vile than ever, for me not a masterpiece, but I think I should watch it again to feel it much better); 8. The Imitation Game (the 1st time it didn't get me as I hoped, but the 2nd one it did, another incredible biopic with wonderful actors and a well adapted screenplay rightfully awarded with an Oscar).
0:08 - Sean Penn really like pricking the Oscar hosts about what they said in the begining of the show. Just like in 2005 when Sean Penn presented the best actress award.

Congrats Birdman is a great movie with a social commentary with no boredom (of course there will be exceptions but comparing Birdman against others like The King Speech or 12 Years a Slave there will be more people who will prefer Birdman).
2014 will be remembered as one of the best years of film making. Congrats to Iñarritu and to the other nominees who were as worthy as Birdman to win :)
My favorite film of 2014. I have no problems with this Oscar victory at all. :D
I'm glad Michael Keaton got his moment. Without him, this film wouldn't have been as integrated or as meta as it ended up becoming.
On a side note--Oscars channel, thank you for not skipping any part of the presentation. ^_^
Keaton should've WON the Oscar - now I don't even like Eddie Redmayne even more!

+Alvaro Gonzalez Boyhood is great, you just don't get it.
+Lewis Cranston boyhood is a gimmick
The idea behind Boyhood was great, but not the movie
Matei Lascu You just have no appreciation for the small moments in life.
Lewis Cranston I don't have appreciation for mediocre screenplays full of cliches
BIRDMAN was amazing, and amazingly diverse. When talented people get together behind an amazing idea and a clear goal, it doesn't matter where they come from.

It's not Latin American cinema, a film's nationality is determined by the budget's origin, in this case USA, regardless of the cast/crew nationalities.
Just saw Birdman yesterday. Outstanding film. One of the best films to win Best Picture in recent years.
American Sniper: 5/10
Birdman or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance: 10/10
Boyhood: 9/10
The Grand Budapest Hotel: 9/10
The Imitation Game: 9/10
Selma: 6/10
The Theory of Everything: 7/10
Whiplash: 10/10
Crazy Viewer just cause american sniper ain't all historical does'yt take away from it being a good war movie
+jordanrb1996 maybe he just want to say there are better movies that worth a nomination than American Sniper. ."Gone Girl?" "Nightcrawler?"
Dwayne Wade i thinkl interstellar should have been
jordanrb1996 I actually thought that Interstellar have already been listed.
Whiplash > Birdman
I truly loved that Birdman won. My favorite film of the year.
The nomination intro is way better than nowadays Oscar.................
Absolutely, it's so fun to watch. Why they didn't bring it back these days, I'll never understand it
I absolutely love this win and most of this year's big winners like not just Birdman, but Grand Budapest Hotel and Whiplash, which are all more outside the box choices. Great job, Academy!
budapest was my favorite i know it was not gonna win but it's still my favorite movie of the past year, men wes anderson is a great filmaker and it was funny to see how the people who won for the movie thank to him for that
Popularity is the slutty little cousin of prestige, my friend.
Matt St.Clair I actually disagree with you on Rocky beating Taxi Driver, since Rocky is my favorite film.
+Matt St.Clair I'm still mad about The King's Speech beating The Social Network.
Sean Penn is the only one that the Academy allows him to curse at the Oscars
Sean Penn is a good friend of Iñarritu and one of the stars of the film "21 grams" precisely from the director Iñarritu.

Really deserved, Birdman is amazing !!!
Diego Pisfil Hey have you heard of this film called Boyhood, there’s a lot of great things about it, like taking 12 yrs to make, and the 12yrs they worked on it, and the period of time (12yrs) the director worked on it... and... uh
@@gabes5548 I don’t know that statement is real or just gimmick. But BIRDMAN deserved to win
Birdman its better rated than Whiplash though, it paved the way to 1917 as well.
5 Oscars in 3 years. Bravo Alejandro!!
How come Gone Girl wasn't nominated? It was wayyyyy better than The Theory of Everything...
Gone girl was better than theory, imitation game, and sniper combined
+doody magoob You're probably joking, but still, to be honest, I think The Imitation Game is pretty damn good, not better than Gone Girl though.
I wanna say because Rosamund Pike's character is an evil c**t, but that didn't keep "Whiplash" from being nominated.
***** Just because I say Einstein was even more genius than Turing doesn't mean I'm insulting him, it's just the way it is, at least from my point of view. Your statement makes no sense.
+jesusfish that's certainly a really sad fact.
birdman, boyhood, whiplash, and the imitation game are my favs
strongwise imitation game is overrated
Kushpreet Singh by who?
Alejandro is a very emotional and spirited Director. Smart and genius
+MagicianFlip69 Yeah The Revenant was fucking great

Birdman to this day is still a masterpiece of a movie, well deserved
"Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)" has been nominated for 9 Academy Awards winning 4 Oscars: Original Screenplay, Cinematography, Directing, and Best Picture.
From 2022...can't believe this film has been completely forgotten less than seven years after release.
THE WAY THE DRUM BAND TRANSITIONED FROM THE DRUM ROLL INTO THE DRUM SCORE FOR THE MOVIE INJECT THAT INTO MY VEINS RIGHT NOW
For all those people who say Boyhood was not a technical achievement because it was a 6-month production spread across 12 years, if you think about it, it actually was a technical achievement. Just imagine what the editor had to do - assembling 12 different annual events together and connecting them into one long jounrey. The film could have felt choppy or like one of those anthology movies, but it didn't.
Very well deserved, Amazing film!!!!!
Birdman was the best film of the decade. Well deserved win.
I really want to the Oscars to bring back the pure creativity of the nomination graphics. This looks amazing! It makes every category exciting to look at
The nomination clip is just awesome! They should do that every year!

The way people who work with him admire and respect him (and how he admires and respect them back) is beautiful.
can someone explain the ending of Birdman im still confused about it
Boyhood: moving, well- directed, great performance by Arquette, incredible using of a song (Hero), stunning journey through childhood.
Birdman: powerful, original, greatest directing of the last years, amazing ensemble performances (highlighting Norton, Stone, Watts and obviously the spectacular Michael Keaton, great score and stunning cinematography and screenplay
The Grand Budapest Hotel: original, great score, great performance by Fiennes, incredible makeup, hairstyle and costume design and a good screenplay.
He won back to back best Director. The Revenant didn’t win best picture ( even though it should have)
My parent's moved here in 1975.
The time, when Emma stone stood on stage for the right movie in this category!
"Maria I love you, you know that, we say that every morning when we wake up" hahahahaha I love him
If it was your race being recognized too you would be as proud as can be. As a a Mexican American having your race recognized is a pride and joy to all of my culture. We have to constantly fight stigma and prove to people and ourselves that we are worthy and capable. So if you think we are being pretentious we are not! #mexicanayamuchahonra #mexicanandproud
4:36 My fellow Mexicans the ones who live in Mexico. Gracias negro! 🤩
The animations for all the nominations was so well done, they should bring this back
I'm just gonna say it:
2014 was the greatest year for film in the 2010s
Alejandro won 3 times: Writer / Director / Best Picture for Bidman beating Richard Linklater in those categories for Boyhood - whose supporing actress Patricia Arquette beat Alejandro's supporting actress Emma Stone. Both films won atleast 1 Oscar each.
Birdman and Boyhood are my favorite films of 2014!
My favourite Oscar winner in years.
Progressive?
Here's my top 8 (and my opinions):
1. American Sniper (one of Clint Eastwood's best "shots", extraordinary Bradley Cooper, a deserved Oscar for sound editing);
2. The Grand Budapest Hotel (that genius of Wes Anderson strikes again, maybe his masterpiece, 4 deserved technical Oscars);
3. Birdman (without any doubt Iñárritu's best film, full of great ideas, awesome dialogues and with an amazing cast);
4. The Theory of Everything (2 marvellous characters/actors, a well adapted script and a wonderful music, still glad Redmayne won an Oscar);
5. Boyhood (more an experience than a movie, but what a great experience, deserved the award won by Patricia Arquette, Linklater should have won for best director);
6. Selma (an extraordinary and underrated true story with a memorable Martin Luther King played by David Oyelowo and one of the best original songs of these past editions, "Glory");
7. Whiplash (maybe the breakthrough film of the year, with amazing groove, terrifying drama, a fenomenal Miles Teller and a memorable J. K. Simmons more vile than ever, for me not a masterpiece, but I think I should watch it again to feel it much better);
8. The Imitation Game (the 1st time it didn't get me as I hoped, but the 2nd one it did, another incredible biopic with wonderful actors and a well adapted screenplay rightfully awarded with an Oscar).
ALE280290 Great commentary (and refreshingly intelligent).
Your first person I’ve seen who has American Sniper at 1. I’m happy someone else likes it.
Still stands as one of the best movies I have ever seen.
Birdman winning and Sean Penn
I cant believe that all of these greats were vying for the Best Picture. Time sure does fly.
2:33 - be careful what you wish for
We Got:
Alejandro - Mexican
George Miller - Aussie
Lenny Abrahamson - Irish
Michael Fassbender - Irish
Sairose Ronan - Irish
Alicia Vikander - Swedish
Cate Blanchett - Aussie
Rachel McAdams - Canadian
One of the few times where Best picture winner is actually the deserving one.
Boyhood was the better film that year.
“She’s reminding me my wife” JAJAJAJA
0:08 - Sean Penn really like pricking the Oscar hosts about what they said in the begining of the show. Just like in 2005 when Sean Penn presented the best actress award.
that editing deserves an Oscar!
Agreed but most of the movie was a long take.
Whiplash has much better editing, and rightfully deserved the Oscar.

The movie that should have won each of this millennium's best picture races (of the films nominated, * denotes actual winner):
2014: Boyhood
2013: Gravity
2012: Silver Linings Playbook
2011: Midnight in Paris
2010: The Social Network
2009: Inglourious Basterds
2008: Slumdog Millionaire*
2007: There Will Be Blood
2006: The Departed*

2004: The Aviator
2003: LOTR: ROTK*
2002: The Pianist
2001: LOTR: FOTR
2000: Gladiator*
As you can see, the Academy has rarely rewarded the correct film over the past 15 years.
Your favourites are not necesarly the bests the pictures of the year. Your list however is good but some will say Gravity sucks (i wont) and others wont belive you took Silver Linings Playbook as the best of the year.
I think Birdman was the best. See how subjective a opinion on films are?
