For those who don't know what actually happened, here it is: There were two Price Waterhouse people present, one on each side of the stage in order to accomodate presenters who would show up on one side or the other. Each held a full set of envelopes. As one would hand as envelope to a presenter, the other would place the duplicate in his briefcase. The award just before Best Picture was Best Actress. That went to Emma Stone. The Price Waterhouse guy with the duplicate, however, failed to put his duplicate back in the briefcase. So, he held both that envelope and the Best Picture envelope in his hand as Beatty approached him to get the envelope for the Best Picture. He (the accountant) then showed Beatty the easiest way to open the envelope. During this demonstration, the envelopes got switched. So, when Beatty open his on stage, it said "Emma Stone La La Land." Beatty was confused and just focused on the La La Land. So, the blame rests with the accountant. As for Beatty, should he have had the presence of mind to say " Hey, we have a problem here. This is the wrong envelope"? Maybe. But its a high pressure situation, so I'm not going to presume to say that he bears the blame and whether his age factors in. The blame clearly rests with the Price Waterhouse guy.
All of that is right. But actually Warren didn’t announce anything. He got confused by the card and froze, so he tried to show it to Faye Dunaway who then proceeded to read out La La Land.
Jordan gave a speech all about humility and kindness, and a few seconds later he gave an unbelievably powerful demonstration of how to actually ACT out of humility and kindness.
He was trying to take control of the situation. He wasn’t rude. Maybe a little frustrated in the moment, his mannerisms were quick, but probably because he was confused. He’s also a big guy and his presence reads off as a little buff. He handled it pretty good considering. He seemed a little mad at the situation but was very gracious and supportive of Moonlight.
+Underquaker Nope, you're just a psychopath who doesn't understand how human beings actually experience emotions. This was an unprecedented screw-up by AMPAS and everyone on stage handled it as best they could under the circumstances.

@@JeffD.A If you listen closely at 3:11 you would hear that he actually did apologize to Warren when he said "Oh Warren, I'm sorry".. At 3:17 you'd see that Warren had the card again. This is still ridiculous. This wasnt stopped until the third person was giving an acceptance speech. Someone right near the stage shouldve been there or maybe contact the production room in a few seconds to say something isnt right. This took over 2 minutes- which isnt long but longer than needed
The auditors who handed out the envelopes were found responsible and are never able to work there again. TLDR: they simply failed to sound the klaxon which would kickstart the damage limitation process. Your expectations aren't in line with reality. The fact that it was even picked up whilst the others were on stage surprises me. You don't really know much about the realities of event management. It takes time for realisations to be made and for action to actually happen.
Very few people knew who the correct winner was supposed to be, it was all kept a secret. There were only a couple people in that building that realized there was a mistake

@@PowerDiva Please, lets all pretend like some goblin in hollywood comes out of the Oscar hole every year and prints out the winners... it was set up this way. A "humiliation ritual" of sorts, for the people who worked on Moonlight. Who printed the card that said "emma stone moonlight?" Did no one see that before they put it in the envelope ? This is a humiliation ritual, hollywood style.
@@blackleague212 so if you actually read up on the details of this, you'll learn exactly how it happened. But first you have to know how this whole process works. There are actually two people in charge, one on each side of the stage and each of them have a set of printed envelopes for the winners. So there are two sets of envelopes out there with identical results on each one. Emma Stone won Best Actress a few moments before this happened, and the envelope that was read with her name came from the person on the left side of the stage. Which means the guy on the right side of the stage still had a Best Actress envelope that said Emma Stone inside. When it was time for Best Picture... this envelope was handed to the presenters on their way to the stage, instead of the Best Picture results. The card said Emma Stone - Lala Land... but on the outside it said Actress in a Leading Role and no one noticed until after it was read on air. If you pause this video at the right moment you can see that. You can also see producers coming onto the stage to look at the card, realizing what happened and then bringing the actual results onto the stage. This is what the producer of Lala Land holds up to the camera as the cast of Moonlight is coming up to the stage. It was a royal f*ck up from the people who are supposed to be in charge of making sure f*ck ups don't happen. It was not an intentional thing by the Oscars... because the Oscars do not control that part of the ceremony. It's actually a completely separate company in charge of the results and the envelopes. So they have no reason to screw Moonlight. They have no stake in the results. I'm not sure why anyone would want to humiliate Moonlight anyway - but if that is the case, as you suggest it didn't work. The only people humiliated by this snafu are the Oscars and perhaps Lala Land for winning, then getting it taken away. You're looking for a villain, in a situation where it was simply an unfortunate mistake, brought on by carelessness.

Dodl Didl for the guy that won? The movie itself won. Everyone on stage won. The only reason you think the producer won was because he was a rude jerk, tearing cards out of peoples (a Hollywood legend to be exact) hands, deciding it was his job to explain the mix up. @@chuckychuck8318 it was the first film with an all black cast to win best picture. i think they just wanted to capture the reactions of black actors and actresses in such a milestone in the film industry.
I don't think the location of the category on the card would have made a difference. The outside of the envelope clearly said "Best Actress in a Leading Role" in large print, and the inside said "Emma Stone". How could Faye Dunaway have just blithely ignored this? If she had stopped to think, the whole situation would have been largely avoided because Warren Beatty was already aware something was wrong. They could have said "Oops. We have the wrong card" and then retrieved the correct card.
@@piustwelfth FYI there was a whole series of stupid mistakes that made this possible, and one of them was that the envelopes accidentally had very small print on the outside listing the category. That's partly why the accountants screwed up and handed over the wrong envelope. They're also trained to go out there immediately and correct things in the event of a mistake, and they failed to do that too. Then you've got presenters in their upper 70s, and as someone who works around retirees they do NOT think and react quickly. Beatty knew something was off, and if he was alone he might have stood there for 20-30 seconds until someone finally runs out to the stage to help him. Dunaway didn't think at all. Anyone younger would have realized the best picture is not EMMA STONE and something has gone wrong. Faye ignored it because she's old. Old people expect things to be a certain way and don't pay attention to detail. I've seen old people go out to pick up steaks for a cookout and come home with hot dogs, because all they remembered is there's a cookout and they need something to put on the grill. If you surprise them with an unexpected problem that requires paying attention, they won't do well.
Because usually people only have to award one category per person, so for example they would have known weeks in advance that they were presenting best picture, so it wouldn't need to be printed so big
@@nbasportfan19 before he had a chance to do anything she took it from him and read it out. They rehearse these things so much so that people can do it without thinking, when something goes wrong it can throw you off.
The La La Land producer handled the situation extremely well for what it was. He didnt come off as angry to me. And he didnt "snatch" the card from Beattys hand. He was quickly trying to resolve the situation and get the Moonlight cast on stage to accept their win...
And to be fair, just after it at 3:10 you can hear him say "Oh it's Warren, I'm sorry", as if to suggest he didn't mean to be aggressive about it and realised it wasn't Beatty's fault.
+Buddy Luck The people of La La Land gracefully turned the awards and stage over to the people of Moonlight, they did not stage anything. And the Academy would not stage something like this, it would seriously harm their entire brand.
No one is talking about that guy, Producer Fred Burger. Before he even started his speech, he knew there was some kind of issue. He shouldn't have started talking. He came off as very entitled.
Why doesn't anyone think that Faye Dunaway is also at fault here? Warren Beatty was clearly confused and handed over the envelope to Faye to seek her opinion. It was Faye who just blindly read out La La Land without even giving it a second thought.
I agree Sunny! Faye was at fault too. They apparently didn’t get along in rehearsal the day before - they both wanted to read the winner so Beatty agreed to let her do it. You notice how she’s chomping at the bit to announce it - these are probably the reasons why Beatty couldn’t tell her there was a problem
I think she couldn't be blamed coz this was happening live and you can't just cut the shot and ask for a confirmation before you announce the name. The management that gave the announcers the card is the one to be blamed.
@@iamradhikasharma Exactly. It's bullshit to blame Beatty or Faye. Their job was to read the name of the movie on the card they were given, not to ratify the validity of the card.

For those who don't know what actually happened, here it is:
There were two Price Waterhouse people present, one on each side of the stage in order to accomodate presenters who would show up on one side or the other.
@EamonKelly In the words of Ed Mcmahon, you are correct sir.
But did the guy get reprimanded for that mistake?
Thank you for this explanation. It’s like the perfect storm. A bunch of things had to happen/go wrong for this mistake to have been made.

100000% agree! My blood boils every time ppl give him crap for snatching the card from Beatty. He was up there and stood up like a pro and accepted defeat like a pro! Kudos to him!
It was also unclear to him how the error had been made. At this point, he probably thought Warren had goofed and was understandably angry! But even, so, he pulled this off with much grace and humility.
@@JeffD.A If you listen closely at 3:11 you would hear that he actually did apologize to Warren when he said "Oh Warren, I'm sorry".. At 3:17 you'd see that Warren had the card again. So he DID apologize off screen and handed Warren back the card.. Not only that, also notice how he held the card high up to make sure that the camera zooms in on it to show the world the correct winner, instead of trying to hide the fact that they lost.. Most sore losers out there would have wanted to hide that. This guy was an absolute class act under a very painful situatuon and handled defeat like a pro.

Sam Jackson, not knowing the cameras were on him, shedding a tear for Moonlights win was just one of the best things I have seen from any actor.

Krolliox either way it wouldn't have been her fault either .. they only read the card that's given .. someone handed them the wrong card. so they have to read it
If you listen real carefully at about 0:18 Warren Beatty says "it says the wrong thing" and Faye Dunaway replies "what?"
Aleesha Truman you're right. Lol nobody knew that
Aleesha Truman actually he said "it says to emma stone" and she said "what?"
I agree with "it says to emma stone" - but is that *him* - or *Faye*?
And Faye NOR Warren get any blame here. PRICE WATERHOUSE.
Aleesha Truman good ears
Aleesa got it wrong. Read the other comments here.
I kinda hate how Moonlight winning the best award of the night was overshadowed by this and still is
And moonlight is such an amazing film, and I feel like La la land was good but it was over hyped, moonlight deserved all the attention which they unfortunately never received
moonlight talked about something while la la land was a musical
I feel like it's a subconscious reflection of the black experience. Even though black people have contributed so much greatness to this world, white people still don't want to give them the respect they deserve.
@@thomasrainbow right
I feel like the reason Moonlight won was because the protagonists were black. This mistake was a Freudian slip, cause La La Land deserved the award
2:10 ‘keep dreaming’
4:47 ‘the hell with dreams’
Lol I never realized the contrast
"we lost by the way" 😂😂😂
It's a forgivable mistake after winning 7 already, imagine if it was their only award???
@Red Boah Sutherland he found out during his speech
@Red Boah Sutherland most probably he was hesitant to give the speech but was pushed by a co-worker to do so...and that's all ... he said "we lost btw" only after listening....during his speech ...
@Red Boah Sutherland lol i dont think so but seems like you are a mind reader... anything you say bruh
@Red Boah Sutherland then you are assuming only..
It wasn't faye or warren mistake, warren said they handled him the wrong card with emma stown best actress for lala land name on it , so he was confused and didn't read it , then fayn took the card and read it , so it's the academy crew mistake
Not the academy crew, but actually the accounting firm PWC's fault because they're the only ones with the cards. 😬😱
Suphia A says the person who has the profile pic of Emma Stone
Suphia A Nah it was his fault
Beatty could have been upfront and said he was handed the wrong card rather than allowing the entire cast of LaLa Land to walk up on stage and be humiliated
Stown.
Imagine saying "Moonlight" and then being like, sorry sorry we read the wrong card again.
@Cryer24597 😂😂
"No no, we are wrong again... The best picture winner is actually 'titanic', once again!"
@@jupiter965 not even titanic THE GODFATHER
And then go 'Batman v. Superman' actually won the best picure.
@@QweffL that would suck bad because that was a fan movie not art but 🤷🏽♀️
awe damn i feel bad for the la la land director, but he was so so respectable about it. very admirable!
and also like MOONLIGHT DESERVES
I wonder who felt more awkward. La la Land, for receiving an award that wasn't theirs, or Moonlight, for taking it away from them
Ashley Morales this comment doesn't make sense. You just said it wasn't there's so how could it be taken away from them??
blackfemme theirs* and it would be awkward to be handed something you think is yours but it's really not. You give your thanks and everything and find out while you're on stage that you did not win. Embarrassing for La La crew more I think.
i guess warren beatty
Ashley Morales fuck you for saying taking it away white peace of trash
Ashley Morales moonlight didn't take anything away from lalaland. they didn't win it.
moonlight wins: camera man zooms into every person of colour in the room
me watching:😭🥺😂🥰🤯🤍
I thought it was rather inappropriate
@@chuckychuck8318 are you a poc?
@@chuckychuck8318 it was the first film with an all black cast to win best picture. i think they just wanted to capture the reactions of black actors and actresses in such a milestone in the film industry.
And I’m glad they did Samuel L Jackson shedding a tear really hit home
The category title "Best Picture" should be at the TOP of the card. Such a simple thing to do!
The topography of the oscars cards are very dumb lmao.
Yup and the biggest words were "OSCARS" like did people think it was Grammy or something?
Imagine he had said 'I read the wrong envelope, it had said Emma Stone, La la land'
And the best actress hadn't been announced yet
Warren was confused, he was hesitant. It was Faye Dunaway who made the announcement...
Because she too read what was on it. It was the people who gave them the cards that screwed up.
He was hesitant but he gave the envelope to her anyway. He should've said something.
Too me, it looked like he was trying to signal her to read the card also, but she was so grabby.
Aamnah Jawad she is blonde why sie didn't realize it's wrong card? does she know how to read? lol
+Zethrael of Teldrassil exactly, she just grabbed it and without batting an eyelid read out la la land...oh la la!
0:19. Lol, you can hear Beatty say "It says here, Emma Stone."
true enough, not Beatty's fault.
Yeah, really quietly.
At 0.21 you can here Dunaway say "what?". They should have had the conversation before announcing the award!
She never gave that a chance since she just blurted out the wrong thing. It was clear he was trying to communicate to her that something was wrong.
Hahahahahaha
3:01 you can barely see "best picture" why soo small wtf
Because usually people only have to award one category per person, so for example they would have known weeks in advance that they were presenting best picture, so it wouldn't need to be printed so big
Yes, that's why the following year, the Font Size on those envelopes were Bigger and Bolder.
this is why you hire graphic designers...
They call it "The Prestigious or the Rich look" Prolly U'll understand when u see the card scene from American Psycho
It still makes me laugh hard. Producer of La La Land said "We lost, by the way" 🤣😭😭😭🤣🤣
Warren tried to stop it before it happened , it’s not his fault everyone thought he was being weird. They literally handed him the wrong card
Yeah I guess he saw the card wasn't for best picture and he saw that but didn't know what to do.
@@0saintclark0 OMG what an unsolvable situation! "Guys, I have the wrong card". Pfff
He was quickly trying to resolve the situation and get the Moonlight cast on stage to accept their win...
carley5k by snatching the card from Beatty's hands lol.
And to be fair, just after it at 3:10 you can hear him say "Oh it's Warren, I'm sorry", as if to suggest he didn't mean to be aggressive about it and realised it wasn't Beatty's fault.
Reality Searcher yeah daily I undermine black actors by acting like the white movie won when I know damn well that I staged it for mass effect.
+Buddy Luck The people of La La Land gracefully turned the awards and stage over to the people of Moonlight, they did not stage anything. And the Academy would not stage something like this, it would seriously harm their entire brand.
TheYasmineFlower it was an ad for both movies. These people are actors!!! Wake upppppp
"Personally I blame Steve Harvey" that's brilliant, and like no one even laughed...
I guess no one watches Miss Universe in that event
Poor Steve. No one will ever let him live that down.
Because it's not funny
that joke was not brilliant at all bruh. Your comedic standard is really low
Kush Hazard Why’s it tasteless?
Will Smith woulda slapped All of them on Stage for messing this up
"we lost by the way" lol 2:37
Abhishek kumar I think you should keep it anyway! lol
That guy is a pro. Restored some of my faith in humanity
Edit: THOSE guys are pros, the hairstyles confused me :D
at first I thought he said "We're lost by the way" with all that mess going on in the back. I thought they were deciding which one to speak next lol
I'm dead XD
I thought the same thing!!!
@@iamradhikasharma Exactly. It's bullshit to blame Beatty or Faye. Their job was to read the name of the movie on the card they were given, not to ratify the validity of the card.
no dude...faye n warren are fine,. they give them the wrong card..it's clearly written the envelope stating best actress ..
hahahahaha the director of Lala land looked so pissed 'this is not a joke'.The way he grabbed the card of Warren Beatty's hand says it all.
that wasnt the director
awsomewild Who was he?
he was not the director he was the producer
Yea at that point he realized, shit, no one really cares that my wife has blue eyes...
R. Kartik That's explained his attitude! LOL
I’m still gagged he said “blue eyed” wife like that part was necessary 💀
Exately😅😅😅😅
I wouldn't blame the mistake on the presenters, (he actually took a closer look to see if it was the real deal, and she thought he was wasting time trying to be funny) I would blame the guy that handed the envelope to the guy.
katherined exactly !!...how could envelopes read by a previous presenter end up back in the hands of another..!!!....and why wait till they start thanking everyone..??...ugh
katherined miss universe dejavu
+A GA they actually have a back up copy of every winning card just in case......they must've (fucked up) handed over the duplicate one to the presenter......

Honestly, in a way 2 of the best films that year had a chance to be honored, in a really weird and awkward way but still. Both amazing movies that still hold up.
like fr both films would’ve made to my top 5 of the 2010s. I would’ve been both happy and somewhat disappointed if either film won.
