For a bright, uplifting movie it actually made me very sad. I think this movie is more than that, which makes it better. Without that sad, bittersweet ending, it would have been *just* a bright uplifting movie, and all of these scenes would have been less meaningful. It's the contrast between this happy vibe and the real sadness in the story that made it so good.
The roommates are such underrated characters. They supported her all the time, and even came to her one-woman play! I hope Mia was still friends with them even after becoming a celebrity.
They were there to comfort Mia after their "relationship-career" conflict in the original script. But they decided to cut it all together on the final cut.
What makes the message of this song so special for me is how Mia is discovered: she has her own play but sadly, very few people come to see it. But one of these few people in the crowd works in the movie industry and is looking for an actress. After seeing Mia in her play, she invites her to the casting and she gets the role, leading to her career finally taking off. So in the end, even though there weren't many people, there was this "Someone in the crowd" who found her
You're telling me that she got dressed and refreshed her makeup, and still managed to catch her friends going out the front door? Which universe is this?

There is something so incredibly effortless about the performance of Stone and Gosling in this, dare I say, perfect film. Emma was rightly rewarded with an Academy Award for this beautiful performance. I feel that Ryan was deserving an honour too.
I know everyone just likes this song cause of the music but it is really true about Hollywood It’s not really about being talented or doing the auditions. It’s about knowing the right people and sometimes going to the right party, talking to the right person and making the right impression

Lots of brilliant references - Grease I’m Sandra Dee scene, West side story and more! Plus a brilliantly shot sequence that later pays homage to Singin’ in the rain with the montage sequence :) also the musical number is just fab.
TheDCTVshow It’s sad which there are people who dislike La La Land and keep comparing it to classic musicals from the past. In my opinion, La La Land is honestly better than Grease, West Side Story, and Singing in the Rain. Many people in society just don’t seem to understand musical, art, and cinema. They only like typical comedy or action/sci-fi flick.
I don't dislike La La Land, I just happen to think that 'West Side Story' is the better movie and musical - in fact it broke a lot of barriers for what can or cannot be in a musical. And for the record I only watch a few action or sci-fi flicks and mostly when there's nothing better on. And for the record, the reason why some people might prefer 'Singing in the Rain' is because although what Ryan and Emma managed to do in two days for 'A Lovely Night' is impressive, Debbie Reynolds is said to have practiced until her feet bled for 'Good Morning', Gene Kelly is said to have shot 'Singing in the Rain' with a fever (though that may just be a rumor because no-one appears to be sure of how high this fever was) and Donald O'Connor worked himself into exhaustion while filming 'Make 'Em Laugh' (he was a 4 pack a day smoker and it'd been a while since his days as a vaudeville stuntman) and had to stay in bed for a week only to find that the footage had been destroyed and he had to film it again.
I’ve studied drama and musicals for years and have a teaching certificate in drama, but I don’t think lala land stands out as a musical, it just doesn’t have the energy or the emotion behind it in my opinion.
tbh this song uplifts me so much & keeps me motivated to dress up everyday, stay respectful & passionate, and to keep putting myself out there. you never know, you might just meet that someone in the crowd.
That's something Damien Chazelle emphasized while making this film. He wanted the musical scenes to be shown in as few takes as possible. That's why the entire A Lovely Night scene is done in just one take, and why all the songs in this movie have long stretches with just one take

One of the most bright uplifting movies, the kind that Hollywood just doesn’t make any more. The songs are fantastic from beginning to end.
'The Producers' was uplifting with catchy music and it came out 10 years before La La Land.
